Out of nowhere, the bottom buttons stopped working today. I was on a Sense ROM (ICS Business) and I figured it was just software related. I tried 5 or 6 different ROMs, even went back to stock. Has anybody else had this issue before? If so, is it hardware or is there a way to get this working again?
For the interim, I just installed an AOKP Rom (Neo 1.5 Linaro) because it offers the software replacement navbar. Out of curiousity, does anybody know what other ROMs may offer the same software replacement?
I was going to look at Neo Rage (1.6 Linaro), but it's listed as AOSP and I'm not sure it offers them or not. I assume there are no Sense based ROMs that offer this?
Thanks!

In any AOSP rom you can enable the soft keys. Some roms you have to manually edit XML files to get them though. In sense, you can't add them
Thanks. I'll poke around some other AOSP ROMs as well. I never really paid attention to them mainly cause I had no use for them heh. Now I really don't have much of a choice.

Did you run any of the mods to dim the lights? I know I run a mod that scripts this change and I wonder if that's sticking and not playing nice with the other roms. Do you have anything for dimming the lights in:
/system/etc/init.d? if so maybe remove that

ehh, I didn't know that thanks!
Ok, looks like I am not the only one, sorry to dig up this old thread, but my Capacitive Buttons stop working today.
I did not install any app, or made any changes and had been using the same (Niles Business 3.6) ROM since Jan.
I never have that dim Capacitive Buttons script.
I did not drop the phone recently either.
I am going to try INFECTION and see if it can tie me over until I get a new phone.
Oj, my guess here is something happened to the digitizer or digitizer ribbon cable. Have either of you had your phone disassembled anytime? If it's not the digitizer and software related, a hard reset or new ROM install should have fixed it no questions asked......
unless some other piece of hardware in this phone has taken a dump. .?
No, the phone had never been taken apart. The only thing that happens to the Rezound, was that I dropped in about 3 ft on asphalt, and it only had a few minor rash on the frame (the shiny part), and that happened many months before the capacitive buttons died.
I am added the info below to hopefully help others that have this issue.
Installed INFECTION, followed Neo's direction (below), and it has a usable phone again.

It's not really broken if you can revert back to stock rom and works fine, is it now???? its a rom issue and not broken, Why don't you just do that and return to stock??

so what is the point of the thread?
Because for some reason its just my phone that does it... I just wanted to see if it was a common problem or if my phone is just weird. I could revert to stock, but I don't want to. I'd rather have a phone that worked right and was running a custom rom.
I did some more testing and its not the root, I think its the scripts that most of the custom roms have in them. Maybe this will help someone else but so far I seem to be the only one with this problem.
BTW, Thank you adslee for the confirmation!

Its interesting that it seems to only be a few devices or people that seem to be having issues with it. I think I've narrowed it down to either a common build.prop edit or one of the init.d scripts. I'll definitely post when I do figure out the culprit so if anyone else is having issue they can fix it too.

I actually think its been narrowed down to active apps running on your phone such as screen filter and widgetlocker.
While widgetlocker was enabled and running on my phone... My gta3 wouldn't respond accurately (sometimes not at all) to any touch screen actions. But after disabling and then rebooting - game worked perfect. Re enabled it and tested again... Had the same problems all over again.
I haven't experienced a problem with screen filter personally... But I did read that both apps can negatively affect the touch screen accuracy/capabilty.
Just thought I'd share that
{HTC Amaze 4G running QuikSense v3.0.0 w/ X kernel}
I have neither of those running on mine but still have the same issues with GTA3, NFL2012, and Age of Zombies
Well thanks to tmac, an uninstall of go locker solved my problem. Mike, all I can suggest is try one of the stock roms x has provided and see if you still have issues. I'll still do some testing but I think that solved it.

Maps might force close once or twice until you set up wifi
I have included the KB from CM7 but the keys are pretty small so I also included the GB KB,, the keys are small as well but you can make them bigger in settings

A few people have PM'ed me asking about donating. Well, I dont/wont ever ask for donations and honestly I prefer to NOT get donations. I do this work first and for most for me(Yeah I'm a selfish bastard) so I can learn more, so I can make my device the way I want my device, I just decide to share what I make for myself instead of keeping it for myself (I'm selfish, not greedy) and I feel if people start donating they might get more demanding and feel more entitled so I'd rather just skip all of that potential drama. When it comes to requesting things in this rom, I will put them in IF it's something I would use myself. If it's not, then I most likely wont add it. So please dont donate to me, If you want to do some good instead of donating to me, donate to a worthy charity instead! Thank you all for using my rom!

removed a ****load of bloat and useless htc apps
rosie is gone, all the rosie widgets are gone, I have the free version of ADW, Stock GB browser and 3D Gallery all working, the stock calculator is working, GB KB included, The stock Calendar, contacts, camera or mms didnt work but I can try to tinker with them later
but the biggest one so far is I got rid of the Sense lock screen and have the stock GB one So much easier to do on GB than HC!

I noticed the market wasnt updating to the Play Store.. I'll include the updated APK in the next release but until then you can just install this and it will overwrite the market with playstore. No need to push it, just install it like you would any side loaded apk

Another issue I found was sometimes the unlock slider disappears when you wake the device (just the left one though) but if you swipe as if it was there it unlocks. I'll have to look into that

Sounds great I may hold off on testing until it's done. Just hard bricked my E4GT this morning and I'm a bit gun shy.
Never hard bricked a phone before. Accidentally flashed an AOSP ICS rom over an ICS kernel. Apparently this is huge no no. Complete blue light of death hard brick. Thank god for insurance.
Just installed. Testing now. I'll edit in problems as necessary.
First thing I noticed is that the Setup Wizard force closes if I try to change the time settings. I can change the time settings just fine through the regular settings, though.
The keyboard wouldn't pop up at first for whatever reason. A reboot fixed it, though.
In the settings, the right side of the check boxes are cut off.
Also, the mobile signal level icon still shows up, even though I downloaded the WiFi only ROM. I'm guessing this is just an issue with theming for now, though.

The first issue I mentioned in the OP. The keyboard popped up fine for me the first time. The check boxes I noticed and will look into. And the signal meter will always be there even if its just wifi. But you'll see its a empty signal. The only difference is hc puts a red x through it.

Agreed. So far, it's definitely smooth, and just has those minor issues. I think this will do just fine until we get ICS (though I'll go over to an AOSP GB ROM if we get one). I like it better than Honeycomb already, even if it is an older system.

Sounds good.
I recently flashed my Samsung Fascinate with PowerWashed Team's PWGB Version 2.0 (Beta 3). I'm terribly new to using custom ROMs, but I'm quite pleased with the results. I've only had one concern with this ROM regarding the back light on the soft keys. They light up every time I touch my screen or press a hard key.
I've attempted to find a setting for this in the OS and in CwM Voodoo Lagfix Recovery v2.5.1.x screen, but wasn't able to find such a setting (Again, I'm very green so it could be right under my nose and I simply don't know it.)
I also attempted to install myriad apps to keep the back light off on screen touch including:
Screen Filter (No effect)
Night Mode (No effect)
Light Flow Lite - LED Control (No effect)
Light Manager - LED Settings (This app actually stops the back light from coming on, however it's unpredictable and works >15% of the time)
I've also done a lot of searching on the matter. I've seen where others have stated the problem, but none where there was a solution or enough information for me to further investigate a way to fix this. It's also been complicated to find information due to a variety of search terms (soft keys, led, etc.) yielding results about the camera or other things that are unrelated to my issue coupled with my lack of direct knowledge on the matter.
I'd really appreciate any advice on either directly fixing this or a source of information so I may learn more from what is causing this behavior and fixing it myself. Thanks, everyone for all the time and effort you've put in for making things like this accessible to individuals like me. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.
This behavior is a product of the kernel, and most people find it desirable. If you install the kernel control app nstools, you should see an option called cmled timeout, allowing you to set the led backlight timeout.

Thanks for the information! Unfortunately, the ROM I flashed has a stock kernel and doesn't offer this option. So, I suppose that's the first thing I need to address, but now I know where the problem lies! Thank you so much for your time and input, I'll put it to good use.
Are you saying the back lights light up even if you just touch the screen? That's strange, they only have ever lit up for me when I actually touch a soft key or hit the power button to wake the phone up.
Well good luck, I'm not sure what kernel is best for GB as I started flashing custom roms during ICS and I'm now on Jelly Bean and never going backwards.

Yes, exactly this. It is really odd and very bothersome when trying to read at night. Even if I use the volume rocker to turn the page the lights will come on. It's maddening. I'm currently looking at the kgb kernel, but I think the nstools led option isn't actually going to address this quirk. (Directly, I believe I will end up disabling the led altogether)
If you don't mind, what rom did you choose?(Ignore, I was on mobile and did not see your signature at the time)
How has the performance been? I'm interested in doing the same, but was afraid my fascinate wouldn't handle jb very well.
Well needless to say it's different for everybody when it comes to roms, sometimes your phone will have no problem running a certain rom where as someone else's might not even boot. As for myself I've been pretty fortunate and have been able to try any rom I've wanted to with success, and I'll give you a few of my thoughts on it.
If you're wondering about performance, well simply put JB blows everything else away and runs like a dream on the Fascinate. Once you spend a few days with it you'll never want to go back honestly. Even on our aging hardware, it runs amazingly fast, even without kernel performance tweaks.
Anyway, as far as roms go, if you're most concerned with stability and reliability then I would highly suggest CM10 (whatever the latest nightly version is). Of all the roms I've tried, it's by far the one that's given me the least hassle. That said, I'm quite fond of the tweaks offered in AOKP, mainly the voltage settings (for battery life) and the fact that it seems to vibe much better with Devil kernel than CM10 does. I've been running my current rom/kernel for a couple of weeks now, and I'm happy enough with how it's running to keep it as my daily driver for a while.
This isn't to say the GB roms aren't any good, because of course they are, but considering how nice JB roms run on our phone you'd be doing a disservice by not at least giving them a shot.

You sold me on the idea of JB. Flashed it today, and I love it so far. Plus, my soft key lights aren't constantly on! Win-win.
Thank you so much for the guidance. Your input helped turn a satisfactory experience with ROMs into a trully positive one.
Glad to hear you liked it man, I was reluctant at first too due to (at the time) no 'official' releases, but I'm glad I made the jump. I'm quite enjoying AOKP M1 and will probably stay on it for a long time. Which rom did you end up trying?

I was really impressed with your review, so I chose to go with the same rom. It also seemed like the most stable option and easiest for me to understand the installation procedure (very important for me since this is my only device and more than just my daily driver, it's my life line). I had been extremely hesitant to go to JB for fear of junking my phone up, but I'm really glad I took the extra risk. I just needed an extra bit of encouragement. Thanks again for all your input!
If you managed to install AOKP smoothly you can pretty much install any rom the same way, basically meaning wipe data and cache/davlik then flash whatever you want to. Luckily this phone happens to be very hard to break, and you'd have to do something pretty extreme to brick it. I highly recommend Titanium backup pro so you can just backup the apps you want, and restore them in no time when you're trying different roms. Also, I've been using some voltage settings that make battery life insanely good, so if you're interested in doing that let me know and I'll post them.

Regarding the key back light, since you are on aokp jellybean now if you still want to tweak the settings, goto settings and then device settings. There you can adjust the timeout on them

Hi, this is my first post to XDA, so let me know if I make any mistakes.
I have an HTC Thunderbolt here, I just ordered it from eBay cheap. I've been working with android for a while now, and plan to flash anything that isn't Sense-based to it once the battery I ordered comes in. It was cheap ($30), because the softkeys on the bottom of the digitizer don't respond. Knowing android, and messing with CM7 and it's tablet features, i figured there would be a way to add a software based softkey bar at the bottom, similar to ICS/JB tablets and phones without hardware keys. So that's my question, on a rooted rom (most likely ICS), how would I go about adding that softkey bar? If anyone has an answer to this, thanks. I'm hoping to figure this out without replacing the digitizer/glass, but I will if i have to.

I think there may be a build prop tweak to enable it but you would have to do something like that on a cm based rom. Twisted ics or liquid ics would be your best bet. I think both them have to option to enable the nav bar. 30 isn't bad for a 4g phone but the bolt wasn't the best one you could have chosen.

Add this to the end of your build.prop file and reboot
#enable navbar
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0

Thanks, will this work with any ROM, or liquidICS/CM based ROMs? I still haven't started it up yet, battery should get here tomorrow or the next day. Might mess with it with my Eris's battery taped in, though. Seems to work holding it in, so if I got it rooted and flashed, would I do that through the terminal emulator or something similar? I'm still new with Andriod's terminal idea. Hope I don't sound too much like a noob here

For 4G phones I've got this and the Droid Charge, but I can't stand the charge. I always liked the tbolt's design, and went for it when I saw it so cheap. I'll try once I get it running

any phone 4.0.3+
To us canadian users stuck on the JB modem's.... pretty much the only problem I have noticed by installing the hybrid modem made my morislee is that the autorotation is inverted...
I was wondering if there was a way to make some other xposed module or patch of sort to invert the inversion ....
Not having autofocus while taking a video really blows ...
So if anyone got ideas... do brainstorm please...

I would hit up @morrislee and ask what he needs from you to make your own hybrid variant, he cranked out the ones for us after the mako versions extremely fast, seems like a nice enough dude, and this way you wont need any wacky workarounds.
Ya I did message him... Unfortunately I believe he is busy

A hybrid modem will most likely not fix the rotation issues. The issue is with the dsps.* image files in the modem. They are the firmware that is sent to the Hexagon DSP processor, and they are signed, so they most likely cannot be modified. They control sensor function, which includes both rotation and camera autofocus. A userspace patch would be needed to fix autorotation if those firmware files are used.

Stuff like this keeps schooling me every day, brain starting to hurt
That being said, I setup an Ubuntu environment earlier today, from one of the guides in chef central, using 12.04 64bit, got all the packages, but i'm terrified to sync a potential 10 gigs of stuff, what exactly should i be syncing to on github for our device, and say for illusion rom to try building from source?
and as I side project today, I nearly got a zte x500 to take a custom rom and recovery from the stock recovery, after noticing ZTE signed their packages with the test keys, just needed to figure out the mmcblk for recovery for the cricket score <edit> I know the syntax that particular updater script needs now, but dont have access to the phone til monday. the person is getting a new phone anyway but it's my pet project to flash a custom rom and recovery from the stock recovery and good practice doing updater-scripts from scratch </edit>
Been a fun day.

Just checking, would it be possible for you to make an inversion patch for your hybrid modem?
