Hey guys my s3 is great except every night when I get home I need to manually go into my mobile network settings and set it to GSM rather than Auto. Reason for this is at home at night my 3G drains my battery immensely. I'm currently running omega 27.9 with root but this also happened on stock.
I'd like to find a way to either set it up by toggle through a widget, or through taster somehow. This is different from just turning off 3G data because the voice component will still search for the 3G network, I want to find a way to actually set voice and data to GSM hopefully automatically (perhaps screen off for 10 minutes?)
I had look at tasker but it could only toggle the data network.
Thanks!

I think HD widgets has a switch widget to toggle between 2G and 3G.
Go to Settings>Mobile Networks>Network Mode>GSM

I have a Vibrant with no data plan (I'm in Wi-Fi 99+% of the time). How can I turn off both the 2G and 3G radios, both to save battery and to make sure I'm not accidentally charged for using data?
I searched around and there are a ton of apps and widgets to toggle between 2G and 3G or disable 3G (Smoda, APNDroid, etc.), but I haven't found a way to turn both radios off. I also poked around in Service Mode, and the only options I found were to toggle between 2G/3G, not turn the radios off. Any ideas?
Not sure you can. Airplane mode will kill the WiFi too. But the best bet would be to stay on 2G and disable data roaming.

Trigger Airplane mode, slide down notification area, turn wifi back on. Bingo. I do this at School in areas where I get no reception at all but has wifi access.

Another option would be *#*# info#*#* then go phone information ..scroll down and hit "turn off radio" and your good to go. Or you can hit menu and press "disable data"

APNdroid shuts them off Ive used when i used my vibrant as prepaid to save battery. After you disable you have to reboot
Thanks for the help, everyone! Airplane mode + wifi is perfect.
(About APNDroid: as far as I could tell, it just changes your APN entries to invalid addresses; it doesn't actually turn off the radio. So you can't use 3G, but I was afraid it would still use the radio while searching for the invalid networks. But I don't have a great understanding of HSPDA, so I could certainly be wrong on that.)
just a heads up, airplane mode also disables calling/texting
Yes the radio would still be searching for networks if you disable the apn
If you get the Juice Defender app, it has a "Toggle Mobile Data" widget. It's a nice 1x1 widget that turns off the mobile data radios (but not Wifi). This is the best solution I've found.

Hey all,
I have a very odd problem that is actually apparent in the HTC Desire forums by 2 other people. (found using the search that comes up when starting a new thread)
When I use my phone on WiFi the data is automatically turned off (I'm assuming because WiFi takes priority, however when WiFi drops, the data does not reconnect and I am left with just the reception bars for SMS/Calling.
To fix this I must either cycle aeroplane mode or go to Settings > Wireless and Networks > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names > Vodafone Internet and then when I'm in the editing screen for that APN the data reconnects.
I have tried making a shortcut directly to the APN settings using LauncherPro activities shortcut but the data will only reconnect if I take the long way (or cycle aeroplane mode as it is a quicker fix)
Please help, this is very annoying as my data doesn't reconnect when I leave my home WiFi in the mornings until I notice it half way through the day.. missing many important emails
Thanks in advance.

u could use a widget to toggle the APN (extenedcontrols)
but i had the same problem on my old Desire from Telstra until it was updated to Froyo and then i never had the problem again.
What firmware version are you running? Also are you running Gingerblur, gladatrix or stock?
1.57 with gingerblur. Thanks for the tip about toggling the apn I will try that soon

Hi,
I have terrible 3G (UMTS) reception at my office, but good 2G (GSM), so to save battery and make the phone as usable as possible I switch to 2G when at work. I used to go to Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Mobile Networks and switch on "Use only 2G networks", and lately I've been using the "Toggle 2G/3G" function in the CM7 notification power widget.
However, it is slightly annoying to have to remember this toggle every time I enter/leave the office, so I'd really like to have an app that does this for me. Does anyone know of an app that can toggle 2G/3G based on either location or time? I'm using CyanogenMod 7.0.3 if that makes a difference.
I've tried a few different profile/setting switching apps, but none of them seem to be able to do this (while all can turn APN on/off, which I don't want. I want data enabled all the time, just over GSM part of the time). Even the apps that claim to have a toggle for 2G/3G seem to be just shortcuts to "Mobile Networks" settings.
Would really appreciate any helpful suggestions
You might consider buying Tasker. It can do what you wish even on a geolocation basis. So whenever you enter/leavr certain location proximity it will do whatever you set it to do.
Thanks, tasker does just what I wanted.
Heey,
I just ordered a Samsung Galaxy SII, but I still have a question...
Is there a way to know if you have Wifi enabled and it is connected, that the phones is only using Wifi and not 3G. Because I have a 1GB data plan and when I use my phone at home I want it to only use Wifi and not 3G, so I can use 3G when I'm on the go.
I hope someone can help me.
Thanks in advance!
Yes you can see it (no 3g in the notification bar)
So when I get outside without Wifi, that 3G icon will show up and use 3G. And when I go home it will switch from 3G to Wifi?
Yes

Thanks a lot!

As explained earlier, status bar shows how the phone is connected to internet. By default phone uses wifi if it is on.
I uses "3G watchdog" to keep record of my mobile data usage, this app is simply great.

3G Watchdog, hmm sound like a useful app to see if I'm over my data limit.
Thanks!
Am looking for an APN app to run on ICS 4.0.4 that I can set to change my signal from 3g to 2g at a set time and also connect and disconnect my data connection e.g I have an almost non-existent 3g signal in work so would like to change to 2g during my working hours.
Is there an app that can do this??? Any help is appreciated
I think direct switching via app is not possible due to android design.
But give 2g-3g widget a try! This shows (as a widget) which connection is currently established and leads directly to 2g/3g-settings when clicked.

I believe you can change it manually at Settings->wifi & network settings->Mobile networks->GSM-only (2G) right?

That is right, the widget just gives you one-click-access and shows current status of data connection.
I just mentioned the widget because kersey was searching for an app ...
