Will be 4 Mbit sdcard enough for movies and music? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm going to buy some extra memory to replace my unknown 2GB sdcard to something better, but I only have ~5$. This is only enought for class 4 microsdhc card.
Will my music lag, skip slowly, movies lag, etc?
I'm going to use sdcard primalary for titatinium, apks, and media (movie, music)

hard to say really, i dont imagine there will be any issues though as if you only have a 4 gig card then I imagine the movies you put on there arent going to be hd 1080p high profile and so the bit rates are going to be fairly low and thus the low class of the card shouldnt create any bottle necks.

Seems you did not understand the question. It's about speed not size...

That's what he is talking about. Speed. 1080p movies require a faster bit rate to play well, as he said. Higher bit rate requires faster SD card. 4GB cards usually aren't fast enough.
Moreover, HD movies require humongous space, hardly accommodated by the 4GB card.

Lol. ^^
If the card is only class 4,you won't be able to record HD video. I had one previously in my old phone and it skipped and was crap. Otherwise, it will just take longer for everything else like titanium backup because the write speed is lower. If you're doing multiple things with the card like copying or backing up and playing music, you might get skipping. In my opinion its better to spend that little bit extra to go to a class 10 card
Also, 4GB might not be enough because for example the backup of just my data partition is over 2GB...

Thanks for replies, I will get 5 $ more today and buy class 10 8 GB or 16 GB sdcard.

Using CrystalDiskMark to determine speed of SD card

hey all, i was just wondering if anyone knows the differences between the tests that crystaldiskmark does to test the speed of a storage device.
there are 4 different tests: sequential, 512k, 4k, and 4kQD32. read and write tests for each type of test.
thanks!
EDIT: heres a screenshot of my results:
I can't tell you about all of them, but sequential writes are what your card class is all about. A class X card is supposed to write a minimum of X MB/s. Your class 6 is writing well above its rating, congrats.
The other I can mention is 4kQD32 writes -- according to the Nook Color folks, it's very helpful for performance of SD installs of Android, so if we ever get an sd install here, hold on to that card. Higher class cards, 6 and 10, often do horrible in that 4k writes category. Class 2 and 4 Sandisks seem to have the best track record, but your transcend isn't half bad, and my best 4k writer is a no name card that outperforms my other 2 sandisks and a samsung. Source.

All right thanks. Its weird though I was just trying to copy a huge amount of files to my sd card (about 6.5 gb) and it was writing at like 3 mb's per second. Does the size of the transfer affect the write speed since this test was only using a 50 mb file?

Copying lots of little files, in my experience, goes slower than copying a single large file. When I copy a video onto my card, I get close to the max speed. When I copy directories full of files, anything goes.

Ok well I guess this sd card isn't all too bad then... really wanting to get a 32 gb card but trying to wait until I can get a better deal for it... you think a sandisk class 4 32 gb is good enough for games and videos?? I haven't seen any class 6 32 gb cards anywhere... not even sure if they exist...

I have a SanDisk Class 4 32 gb card for my Nook Tablet and it seems to work fine for games like GTA3, Angry Birds, etc. as well as .avi movies.
I tend to agree with Nookie. Depending on its actual performance (sandisks often outperform their minimum write rating, but not always), it might be frustrating to copy the files over, but viewing videos and playing games will work just fine even on a class 2. Fast sequential read speeds are easy to come by, and frankly they don't have to be all that fast to view even HD video. Your games are going to load into ram and play from there and perform just fine.

SD Card class?

Hi guys, jus wanna knw if there is any difference in the performance of the phone (other than jus transferring files to n from pc) according to the class of the sd card?
Thanx
Sent from my Nexus One using Tapatalk
Yes there is. The class tells you the transfer speed for witch the card is rated.
For example, my card is class 10. That means that its capable of transfer speeds of up to 10mb/s. Same for others.
Sent from my GT-S5660 using XDA App
So that transfer speed of 10 mbps refers to the speed @ which files are being transferred to n from pc right?
My question is apart from that will it affect the performance of phone when i hv apps in ext (a2sd)
Sent from my Nexus One using Tapatalk
Yes, speed class is guaranteed write-to-card speed in megabytes/second (read speed is usually even higher). Obviously, the bigger class, the better, but high-class also much pricier. And you unlikely too see much speed difference if you just want to put some apps on SD card (well, depends on the app - some games are 300Mb+, and you'd see the difference).
But if you for example want to watch movies on your phone, you may find that slow speed class, like 2, is a pita to wait for while a movie transfers from your pc ;-). Class 10 would be a real hit then (especially if you write files using a cardreader, it may be not as good via USB to a phone).
Hv a class 2 1gb card, planning to get class 6 8gb card. So i should see significant performance improvements while havin ext partition right?

Don't know how much will it cost.
Priority is card speed. Higher class is faster: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital#Speed_Class_Rating
dont know the cost...my advice go for sandisk HC mem card class6 or a class 10...ur phone performance vl increase gradually ..
iam using a class 6 16gb my xpm is pretty faster than before.

Phone performance isn't affected by SDcard.
The only difference you can see is when you read/write files from SD, nothing more.
Web browsing doesn't get faster with higher class SDcard. Calling doesn't get better with higher class SDcard.
And Class 4 is enough for Android, I've never had problems with it and the speed is enough for me.

If you want to copy about 4 GB of data to SD from PC with class4 card and then copy same file/s to class10 card the time is a lot shorter with class10!
This is why many people use higher card class.
And when you want to have system in externel memory* this require minimum class6 card to avoid lags.
* e.g. HTC HD2
my Sdcard is 16GB class 10 (sillicon power) and write speed is 8 - 9 MB/s and read speed is 16 - 17 MB/s , this is very nice SDcard

I agree with u...but music player and video playback performance increases...and also after a reboot when u have apps installed in the sd it loads faster in the app drawer.

[Q] Micro SD cards

Hi guys
I'm looking to buy a Micro sd card, samsung 32GB, class 10
So my questions are:
1- If someone already using sd card just like this one, tell me is it working fine with your android device?
2- Do you think that patriot or some other manufacturer cards are better then samsung?
3- Does your phone in some cases really feals faster with an sd card with bigger class number ( does reading speed of your card effect phone's speed? )
4- I heard that class 6 ( 6 MBps ) is more than enough for android devices, and also that some class 10 cards slow down a device, is it true?
5- Will i ever have enough memory on my phone
I know that there are the same threads on forum somewhere, but i need answers quickly and thats why im opening this one..

1. It works fine.
2. It just user preference. Their both great.
3. Reading and writing to the SD card will be faster. It won't affect phone speed unless your device is using certain mods such as swaps, int.ext. sd swaps, etc. or you have apps on your SD card.
4. While class 6 may be quite fast for a device, there is no way a class 10 could be slower.
5. That's up to you .
tnx Theonew
if i understood it well, an app called swapper 2 can allow device to use some memory from partitioned sd card like a ram memory and provide it a slightly better multitasking, and speed.. ?
And i have read that it can also affect an sd card's life..
So, is it worth it?

Yes, swapping can degrade the life of the SD card but it is worth it if your device is a low-end one (and slow). It will assist in stuff like gaming, etc.
No, I really don't think its worth it. It really affects the cards life and does not really add much ram, even for slow phones...

An additional 256mb is quite a lot compared to 192mb (total).
Quick benchmark of Samsung SD card class 10 in the ASUS Transformer TF101.
Code:
[email protected]:/home/kuisma# hdparm -t /dev/block/mmcblk1p2
/dev/block/mmcblk1p2:
Timing buffered disk reads: 60 MB in 3.09 seconds = 19.43 MB/sec
Reference, the internal nand flash (/data partition):
Code:
[email protected]:/home/kuisma# hdparm -t /dev/block/mmcblk0p7
/dev/block/mmcblk0p7:
Timing buffered disk reads: 52 MB in 3.10 seconds = 16.79 MB/sec
If comparing read vs write, large blocks vs small, sequential vs random etc, the SD Cards wins a few times, the internal flash a few. It's more or less a draw. I would say this SD card got "good enough" performance, although far from SSD performance.
good enough for smartphone

[Q] buying xperia sola

hey guys, i know that xperia sola has 8gb internal memory but 5gb user available right?
so which memory card should i buy?
should i buy 16gb or 8gb would be enough?
i only gonna put like 50 songs, probably one 720p video which usually takes 700mb, some casual android games from the market, and some heavy gameloft games like mc3, nova and so on.
which should i buy considering it has 5gb internal memory available for user which makes it a total of 11gb if i 8gb+internal memory and a total of 19gb if 16gb+internal memory.
and which colour colour should i pick. white or red? i dont want black i have been using so many phones with black colour my whole life so white or red?
If u have to put so many things on the memory i suggest u to take a 16 gb class 10, a ext sd card make all very slow if it is not enogh good!
I prefer the red one,but when i bought it there is only white -.-
Since the price is almost the same for 8&16 (at least where I live) I'd get a 16. You won't have to worry about the space if you decide to put more files in it later on.
But make sure the class is high enough or it will make your device laggy. I'm not sure what class would be good enough for android as I always use the class 10 cards from my cameras, but I think 4 minimum.
Oh and I'd get red, it's an eye catcher.

First of all the user accessible memory is 4gb only.
Now to answer your question, it'd be better if you go for 16gb.
Reason - You said that you will play heavy games like mc3. Now when you install these games from the play store, they download a big chunk of data on your internal memory (usually 1gb+) now since the user accessible internal mem is just 4 gb, you'll only be able to keep 2-3 games at max.
But there is an app by the name "gl to sd". Using this app, you can transfer those "big chunks" of game data to your external memory. (requires root).
Now you can keep around 5-6 games along with those songs and 720p movies you mentioned.
I am using Xperia Sola with a class 4 16gb mem card. have about 5-6 big games(mc3, asphalt 7. dead space, gta3, max payne etc), around 300+ songs, and still have 3-4 gb free in my mem card. Moreover I keep my internal mem of 4gb as free as possible.
