[Q] retrieve contacts - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, my wife has dropped and smashed her screen. No problem, I just set her up on my zte blade backup phone but only 30 contacts synced to the phone. Turned out she's been saving to contacts to the phone and not her Gmail account. I would appreciate help and advice on retrieving them.
Thought about using the computer as a remote but I think it needs to be rooted for keyboard to work, android sdk is currently downloading, I've tried remote downloading new backup apps from the market like wavesecure and my backup but they need accounts setup first on the phone.
Any help would be great.
Cheers

wow this forum sure moves quick. on the second page already.

Can you connect to Gmail? If yes go to options and then download contacts as zip
Send form Galaxy S2. Using XDA Premium

You have to retrieve the dbdata file. i cant remember if you can get it without root (never had a android phone for more than 2 min without root )
Otherwise you have to root before, but the tricky part is knowing the kernel version when you cant see settings.

Plug the phone into samsung kies and see if you can sync the contacts and then export

Gmail Sync Problems

Hi,
I'm having problems syncing my contacts from my phone to my Gmail account. Basically, they're syncing the wrong way!
If I put a new number in my phone then sync to Gmail the number is deleted as it isn't already in my Gmail contacts list.
Surely this is the wrong way around? Surely it should add the new number to my Gmail account? After all, the phone is the logical place to create new contacts.
So, what am I doing wrong? Any suggestions?
If it matters I'm running Vodafone branded firmware: Baseband 1.2.28, Build R2BA024.
Thanks.

could it be you're editing your contacts on gmail as well? then again.. it couldn't be because it's 2 different contacts right?
how bout, if you create an account in google contacts? does it get synced with your fone and show up there?
Yeah if I add a contact to Gmail it syncs to my phone fine. Just not the other way around.
*confused*

i also have a question to this case. obviously (and i think this is also the reason why this thread was opened) gmail sync only syncs the contacts from your gmail-account to the phone...actually it would be more valuable if i could transfer the contacts from my phone to my gmail-account, as it would also be a kind of backup if something happens to my device.
it is also a thing of daily routine, if i receive a new number or mailadress, i do save it in my phone. because of the only sync-direction gmail->phone, i have to sit in front of my pc in the evening and add the new contact details to my gmail-account...? wouldn't it be easier if i could start a transfer from my phone TO gmail?!?!

My thoughts exactly! Far more logical that way around.
The weird thing is, it used to work that way for me. Now it doesn't. As far as I'm aware I haven't changed any settings on either my phone or my gmail account. Very strange!
Tried clearing the cache btw and that hasn't solved the problem.

so you already did that with your X10? you transferred the contacts of your phone to gmail?
of course it would be perfect, if i could chose which side should synchronize with the other...
e.g. if i need to reset my phone, then i'd love to get my contacts back from gmail!
hope, that somebody can help us here!

Yeah. As far as I'm aware it used to sync in both directions. When I first got my phone I ran a manual sync and all my contacts appeared on my phone. Then if I added one to my phone, or changed one, and ran another sync it would update my gmail contacts with the new/changed one.
Now it doesn't. Strange!
The only thing I can think it would be is that I changed the last part of my address from googlemail.com to gmail.com.
I wonder if that might have something to do with it?

hey dont worry for that part as it syncs all contacts in a very clever way, for eg i had flashed my phone several times and didnt kept backup of my contacts(apart from one on gmail) and when i was done with flashing i just use to sync them again with gmail and voila..ph got updated according to copy of gmail contacts...so it doesnt deleates the contacts on gmail...

hm, so it should normally align both states maybe? is the sync-function really checking the contacts of the phone and those in gmail an adds only the contacts on that side, where they are missing?
well, i have tried the sync once and it deleted all the new contacts on my phone! there was only a transfer of my gmail-contacts to my X10...phone book was ignored and even overwritten!
any hints what sunjin an i do wrong?

It used to sync both ways for me but now it doesn't. This is very, VERY annoying as I frequently add new contacts to my phone but I now have to remember to go add them to Gmail too or they get deleted next time I sync. Illogical if you ask me.
Can anyone with a different phone/version of Android confirm if this happens to you also?

How do you back up Contacts?

Im rather confused by how to go about backing up my contacts. Ever since google started backing up contacts, I haven’t quite understood which contacts (sim, phone or both???) it backs up. Is there any good application which backs up all of your contacts, that is , those saved in your sim, phone and google account, altogether.
I flashed bionix V 1.3.1 last night and used ‘MyBackup Root’ & ‘Titanium backup’
to restore my contacts. First I restored user applications with data and all of my contacts were back. Then I used ‘My Backup Root’ to restore contacts. (I don’t know why I took this step). It started erasing all of my contacts before restoring. When it got done, I realized I was missing my contacts saved in sim card.
This is all sooo confusing that I don’t know how to get my sim contacts back.
why did u use the other software once u had used titanium backup?
kies does it aswell ??

Hi, I used My Backup to backup my contact before & restore it after I change to other ROM.
However, it seems the My Backup will erase all your contacts in your SIM card as well after you restore. The WORST part is it restored the contact & store as Google contact. You can't export the contact to SIM card anymore then.
Luckily I have backup in my old phone & imported back into the SIM card & reload it again.
My advise, try Go Contacts app. This app do the tricks where export your phone contact into SD Card & imported back flawlessly.
Why not just have all your contacts inside of Google? And each time you addd a contact, make sure it's being added to your google account. I've been on Android since the G1... never 'backed up' a contact.. Just logged in to my google account on the phone and had them there.
or you can simply read the noob guide in this forum and follow the steps that are proven to be used by alot of people....
I stoted all contacts in Google account, everytime upgrading to new rom, synchronize contact again, all of them will be availabe in your mobile. It's my simple solution.

I dont know of a way to get your contacts saved to your google account AFTER you have already chosen to save them to phone or SIM. I'm pretty sure you only get that option once. I would think you'd have to go thru each individual contact(omg, that sux) maybe erase and then resave and choose ur google account as the location to store. As stated before saving to ur google account is the best option to backup contacts

This is exactly what happened... I couldnt have explained it better myself. My Backup erased all of the contacts (both on sim and phone) before restoring and restored contacts to google. It is important to note that it did not restore contacts that were saved on sim to google. However, when I go into 'My Backup' app and view the data i have backed up. I can see all the contacts (both sim and phone contacts) in there. I will never use 'MyBackup' to backup my contacts.
The reason I dont save all of my contacts to google is I, for odd reasons, sometimes have to use (though rarely) my old school phone. I just insert my sim in it and i get all my contacts.

Well .. Vibrant already has the import/exper function. Try using it and after flashing, open the .vcf file in your external mem card and it will extract your contacts to your phone.

hi, this is a bit off topic, but I can explain:
I would like to keep my contacts (and info related to them) on devices owned by me.
I DO NOT like how I am "pushed" to use google (or any other account) for keeping my contacts on.
I like to have a choice, at the moment I choose off-line storage on my PC and my phone.
Can it be done like in good old days?
You can just put the contacts on your phone under your Google account and just turn off the sync for the contacts. It will still be on a Google account but it will offline. That's the only option I can think of.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
+, you can then delete those contacts from your Google account afterwards if you don't want to store them online after getting them onto the phone.

thank you guys - that seems to be a solution.
Just to make sure I understand correctly:
1. link my phone to my gmail
2. go to settings->accounts->gmail and untick sync contacts, sync email, sync calendar
is this correct?
will it work?
I am factory resetting my phone for a third time already so apologies for asking SO many questions, but I want to make it write this time
Yeah just sign into your account and it will ask you what you want to sync. Just keep anything unchecked for what you don't want to sync.

Sync Problem After Root & Cyanogen 9?

Hi all
Can someone help out quick?
I had my first mess around with the S3 last night and done the CF-Root with Odin, a NANdroid backup and then put on CyanogenMod 9 and everything has gone fine, other than the fact that I don't have any contacts, text messages or previously installed apps?
Am I able to get these back? I was sure I had the contacts and txt's synced through my Gmail account, but it doesn't seem so now....:silly:

this is also true with the samsung kies program it just does not want to recognize my phone.
even tried switching between mtp and ptp, debugging mode is enabled...
is this a know issue or something I am not doing?
not a really big deal but I would prefer not to have to remove the micro sd from the phone
everytime i need to transfer over files.
Also the has anyone been able to use the movie studio app in cm9, because mine just stalls out

I really screwed up this time... Normally I'm pretty good with backing up and preventing this kinda stuff but this one slipped through my fingers. I did a factory reset of my Samsung S3 (US Cellular) and formatted it on my PC via USB. I assumed all my contacts had been saved through my gmail account, but apparently they were not.
#1. Is there any way I can possibly retrieve some of my lost contacts? One number in particular is extremely important.
#2. If they weren't being saved to my Gmail account (some did, some didn't), where did they save to?

I'm supposed to 'sync' every time I want a number to be saved? I've had this number in my phone for months and months.
If your contacts haven't been saved in GMail account then see if your Sim Card has them. When you save a contact, you can choose to save it in your phone's memory or Sim Card. To see if your Sik Card has your contacts saved, Go to Contacts, press Home button and tap Import and hen choose import from Sim Card.

Normally, and if you activated the sync, it should sync once you created the contact and you got an internet connection. If this did not happen, and you already formatted anything and don't have any nandroid backup or Titanium Backup of the contacts files, I fear there is no way to get those contacts not synced back.

Yes.
Check with your Service Provider, and demand a print of calls or sms messages sent from your number in a specific time frame, that way you'll 100% get the number. But this method is not free, they will charge you for it. Good luck.
