hi guys,
i wanna ask you senious guys that, should i have to change the kernel each time if i want to change the ROM of my galaxy s II or any kernel will work with any ROM?
kindly assist me in this matter.thanks.
What type of Rom are you trying to flash?
Most custom roms include a kernel so you you will have to refresh back to your preferred kernel.
Or you can open the zip file and replace the kernel of your choice as long as it matches your firmware version, ie GB kernel for a GB rom etc.

any kernel may not work with any ROMs...almost all samsung firmware versions has got its own versions of Kernel.
In SGS2 normaly custom kernels are used for rooting your phone, like CF-root, whcih are made for almost all the samsung firamware matched kernels, you only want to pick the one matching for your ROM.
It is also seen sometimes advised to back up your Kernel, this can be done using a tool from Market called "Ktool", at a worst scenario, when your installed custom kernel giving you a treble you can restore the previous one.
EDIT : you are already on a custom ROM as well as Custom Kernel. both have got their newer versions alredy.
checkrom is now on V6, and Siyah kernel is now on v2.6.14
Well your still on gingerbread and an early kernel and early checkrom. There are many roms and kernels you can try the best for battery life us what works best for you and only you can figure that out with testing.
Try out an ICS Rom if you haven't done so already and there are now custom kernels for that as well.

I meant the kernel that is already included with the rom when you flash it. So just flash the rom and you don't need to install another kernel after it.
Here is a link to the Resurrection rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436854
Hope this helped you
If you flash a rom it replaces the kernel you've been using with that of the rom you're flashing...
Soooo
Eg cm9 + siyah
If you flash a new nightly it'll replace siyah with cm9s kernel so you have to flash siyah each time.
Think that makes sense..!

Just one short question so I dont do something stupid: do I need to do some kind of procedure or anything before I flash Siyah 3.0.1.? The phone has ALL stock software and settings and hasn't been tampered like this in any way as its only several days old.
Thanks in advance.
bad move. 3.0.1 is for ics rom. You are likely to be on gingerbread.
Verstuurd van mijn GT-I9100 met Tapatalk
If you have not installed CWM, you can just install it via Odin. Also make sure that you actually have ICS (android 4.XX) installed on your phone or it wont work.
Just to confirm, you have the i9100? Not the US T-mobile version of SGS2?

Yeah I'm on Gingerbread, all stock. Should I flash 3.0 instead?
And I still dont know is there something to do, some kind of procedure or something before the flashing.
Here it says it already needs to be rooted before the flash...

do not install that siyah 3 kernel if you are still on gingerbread. You have 2 options. Install siyah 2.6.14 for gingerbread, or upgrade your current rom to ICS and then install siyah 3.
So, for example I could go with Speedmod or CfRoot, flash some Ics rom(Miui for example) and then flash Siyah?
If you want to stay on gingerbread and use siyah, use siyah 2.6.14 or lower. If you want to go to ICS, use siyah 3.0 or higher. It's that simple. 2.6.x only works on gingerbread, and 3.x only works on ICS.
just flash recovery

If its brand new and stock, first root (zergrush method), flash CF-Root using odin, get ClockWorkMod (using rom manager from market).
After that you can go ahead and flash any ICS rom but first backup everything.
So backup contacts (I just go to contacts and from menu use export to SD card), sms (using any sms backup app from market), all the apps you would like to save for later use with Titanium Backup (free addition is fine).
Also do a back for your stock rom in recovery (I suppose you can do that even before rooting - but I did it after I rooted and got CF-Root kernel).
Hope it helps.
Thanks a lot!
But doesnt Cf Root already come with CWM?
And is this the right method?

That guy is great, but what's creating a confusion about Siyah is FAQ on his page:
Q: Does this kernel work on XXXXXX-ROM?
A: If the ROM is based on Samsung Stock ICS Rom LPQ or newer, it should. Otherwise, search the thread... If you cannot find any reference to that ROM, try the kernel. You won't lose anything by trying this kernel. Worst case scenario is to reflash your previous kernel or ROM. You can backup your previous kernel with Hellcat's k-tool from the market.
So, I tried with 3.0 on my GB 2.3.4., and it didn't work, so I had to flash old kernel.
The reason I want to use Siyah is dual-boot, which it should provide.
Another problem is that ICS comes very slowly.
Siyah V3 doesn't work with Gingerbread roms. It's an ICS kernel. Try Siyah 2.6.14, that's the GB version (look for the thread in the dev section).
I'm still so confused about all of this and can't decide what to do. In addition, there is no cf-root for my kernel(BOKK1).
From the CFRoot thread "What if there is no matching download ? Try finding the closest match." & "The XX and OXA identifiers are not that important" (in your case the BO).

Siyah Kernel up to 3.01 (which is for ICS as you are already told) up to now does not support dual boot! Its only a placeholder till now in CWM. It may support dual boot in future but not now.

Just flash CM9 in CWM. It will also install CM9 ICS kernel so you're good to go. Maybe you'll need to flash another modem in case your GB modem doesnt work with ICS.
After that, I would recommend to flash Siyah kernel, but its up to you.
P.S. DO NOT EVER USE ROM MANAGER (it comes with CM9)

As the title says, every time I do a cwm backup, I get the unable to generate md5 sum.
By googling this, It seems that many people have issues restoring from cwm due to md5 mismatch
But my case is I cannot even create the backup, since it cant generate the md5.
I tried using both backup format, and tried the internal and external storage. Also also get unable to generate md5 .
I have no idea why this happens.
I am currently using aokp milestone one.
The default kernel and default recovery that comes with it
Previous ROM was Samsung leak lsj jellybean ROM.

this is strange, anyway, my main objective is to create cwm backup,
the default kernel in aokp milestone 1 is not working.
i need to try other kernel then.
i would prefer avoiding siyah, dorimanx etc, because i lurk in many forums, and the use of those kernel and their tweaks, will cause SOD.
i hate SOD. i tried siyah before and got numerous SOD.
never once had SOD with cm10 kernel.

You might want to try an app called Online Nandroid Backup, it makes a nandroid backup whilst the phone is on without going into recovery. Although, I'm not sure whether the problem with the kernel would surface. Might be worth a shot if your dead set on not using another kernel.

Firstly: Please give more detailed information (which kernel do you use, which ROM did you use before the problem occurred?)
Secondly: It is possible that you can't acess recovery mode anymore when flashing new updates. Happens with CM 10.2 OTA Update right now. The solution would be to flash a new recovery using Heimdall (Open-Source ODIN alternative) [Didn't try that, but should theoretically work] or, mor simple, a new kernel. Dorimany v9.34 is suited perfectly for that. Download here: http://dorimanx.shine.sk/ .

You installed a Kernel while rooting your phone: Its the .tar that you have to put into the PDA section in ODIN. There are Kernels with .tar and .zip: .tar files are only flashable using Odin while .zip files are flashed using the recovery just like you flash ROMs. I guess your Kernel is a custom CM Kernel (CM for Cyanogen Mod). Carbon ROM is probably based on CM. There is currently no other workaround to get your recovery back then flashing a new kernel/recovery. I am currently working on an easy workaround for this problem, but it will take a while.
Dorimanx is downloadable here http://dorimanx.shine.sk/ and should be compatible: Just flash it like you did when rooting your phone in the beginning, just with Dorimanx .tar in PDA. Recovery should work again afterwards.
My mistake: It's Dorimanx, not Dorimany
Hit Thanks and just ask if you need additional help!

I agree, the problem results of the ROM: But you have to flash dorimanx after carbon because carbon replaces the current kernel with its own CM custom Kernel. It should work just fine with carbon when it's flashed after installing carbon.
