[Q] Any 2.3 or above ROM with everything working? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been searching for the better part of 10 days, this site and others as well, trying to find a 2.3+ ROM with everything working. No luck. Currently running the (t)rusty Bionix V Fishman mod V4 with Bali 1.8.8UV and everything works fabulously. The issue for me is that there are several apps I would like to use that require a 2.3 or above to run.
Every one of the 2.3 ROMs i've found have something not working, most commonly hit or miss GPS and 911 dialing.
Of course I know that an option is to buy a new phone, but the Vibrant is just fine except for the fact that I am still running Froyo. My preference is to keep the Vibrant and upgrade to a more current ROM with everything working. Possible/impossible?
Thanks in advance.

Go for slimics or Chimers they are two beautiful ROMs I had never been into any sort of problems with these two ROMs

Thanks.
I might just bite the bullet and try SlimICS, even though there are some posts indicating GPS issues.

Try ICZen -> http://rootzwiki.com/topic/21742-romimm76i-iczen-185-fistful-of-zen-7-12-12-deficient-development/
EVERYthing WORKS GREAT

+1 ICZen. You should try it. Who knows you might be one of the lucky ones with working GPS on ICS or even JB.
Because I am hard, you will not like me. But the more you hate me, the more you will learn.

Just an FYI, intermittent 911 issues are caused by improper GPS hacks (which CM was using till a while back)
I've been on and off trying to get them fixed. We now have the stock GPS libraries but they're not working fully and the daemon crashes, which I don't know the effect that would have on 911. Although I have confirmed that the stock GPS libraries fix the RIL crash at the point that was causing the 911 intermittent crash.

noted.
I read the 911 Info thread, but my main issue is with GPS. I think it is safe to say that my GPS gets more use than 911 dialing so that's what i'm most interested in. Not that I use GPS daily, but it's nice to have when needed.
Is it correct to say that a ROM based on CM 9 or 10 has the correct GPS libraries?

That's up to how diligent the developer is in keeping up to date with my changes. AOKP for example is still using the wrong libraries last time I checked.
Also, the "nice to have it when I need it" statement applies more to 911 than gps if you get my drift.

Indeed I do get your drift.
As for dev diligence, some users report that everything works after upgrade, while others claim that there are GPS/911 issues.
Certainly I would go for CM 9 or 10 since there is every indication that CM is the Gold Standard, but in the very first post of
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1839655
it clearly states that there are may be interimttent GPS/911 issues and that it should NOT be used as a daily driver. I'm simply heeding this advice.
Maybe the question I should be asking is: Is there a way to determine if my Vibrant will be one of the lucky ones to have GPS/911 working post ROM upgrade before I actually do the upgrade?
Additionally, thank you FE for all your contributions to the Android community.

Right. That warning at the top is because of the GPS daemon crashing and also to cover any shortcomings on locating you during a call versus stock. Right now I do not know what would happen if a 911 call occurred while the GPS daemon was dead. If the call still worked and location was transmitted just as good, then it would be safer to use CM10. If not, it would be safer to use a ROM with the original libraries (as long as you can call consistently, see below.)
As for your GPS situation, you can always go back to stock so you could try.
And as for 911, there was one person who could not call at all due to the same problem that usually only caused intermittent issues, and then he tried a newer build with the original GPS libraries and he could then call. (Although no location was received, that may or may not be the ROM's fault) As for determining if you phone is like that, you can schedule a test call (on a ROM with old GPS libraries) with your local PSAP.

sorry folks for starting this thread. I had been looking primarily in Dev section for answers to my issue.
now i see several similar threads in this section.

[Q] Any GB Roms for Vibrant with working GPS?

Hi all,
Has anyone found any GB ROMs with working GPS? I was contemplating doing the hardware GPS fix for the vibrant, but I've been wondering if that would be enough to get the GPS working on GB ROMs. I sound like a total noob, I know, but any help here would be greatly appreciated. Froyo ROMs are great on the Vibrant but I am going to go out on a limb here and say that I think most of them are nearing the end of their development. Thanks everyone.

Well the hardware doesn't seem to be the problem. It is the lack of GPS files from a leak. With froyo we had a leak very early on so this was never a problem.
Yesterday devs found a leak (on samfirmware) for the galaxy s 4g (GPS chip identical to vibrant) that helped them to create a functioning GPS on gingerbread oon our phone.
You can switch to any JVB rom and flash the GPS fix and follow instructions from there to have a a functional gingerbread rom. There are a few problems, like that you can't turn the GPS off and on and it still work. You have to reboot to get it to lock on again. Also some people were reporting that their compass was switched around. But you and I can probably assume that that will be fixed in the near future. Hope I could help

Hi,
the ROM indeed great, but I have a problem with the GPS.
it works for me only the first time after a reboot.
the 2nd, 3rd attempt etc. dont lock.
I do not know if I have to change anything in the LBS conf, and I cannot reply in the development forum cause I am new.
anyone had a similar problem?
//Morris
You don't need to change anything. Most of these gingerbread ROMs that have GPS working mention the fact there is a bug. The GPS works, but you can't get it to work again without rebooting if you turn it off.

Hi,
I understand I have the keep the GPS always turned (at least the option marked as on)
my problem is with my Sat Nav app.
it locks fast for the first time, but doesn't anymore after I close the app and start it again (even after a few minutes).
On the revolution rom which I like I can't get a gps lock at all no matter reboots or anything

Cyanogenmod and calling 911

I heard that Cyanogenmod 7 for the Samsung Vibrant isn't able to call emergency numbers. Does anyone know if this is true? I don't want to take the risk if it is.
It is true.
I have had trouble with calling 911 and I use MIUI revamped. Luckily, I've had my wife's phone handy.

CM team refused to put the fix in as it wasn't pretty enough for them. Seriously - it's a "hack" and so they won't do it. Lawsuit territory there - a *known* problem that could *cost lives* with a *fix available* and they refuse to do it because they don't want to add anything device specific to the source tree.
They should put a disclaimer : By using this rom you risk death.

From what I know, it varies from one area to another whether or not 911 works. I simply added my local police dept, fire dept and hospital to contacts. I use Go Dialer, which is T-9, so calling them is just three taps away.
This effectively fixes the 911 issue for me, and simply put CM7 > all others.

That's fan boy territory there. It's neat and all but A Long ways away from being as stable as our crop of I9000 ginger ports. The problem with cm7 is they are taking a one size fits all approach. You are ABSOLUTELY sure to lose something along the way. And let's be completely honest here most of the vibrant users are less than 18 and more than likely not to dial 911 but to run away. If it's important to you flash something else. You will only be missing out on a laundry list of potential problems and the theme chooser. I do say this on miui. From my experience miui is far and away a much better beast than cm7 and I have done as the guy i've quoted and have my local emergency numbers saved. Sucks to be responsible but you got to do what you got to do.

MIUI ReVaMPeD has the bug, so I imagine MIUI does too.
MIUI is buit from CM7, they both blow everything else out of the water performance-wise (due to different filesystems and whatnot), but they both have the same bugs (give or take a few) and from there I really think it boils down to personal preference.
The Samsung based GB roms still have the reboot issues in lower %s, and from my experience have been pretty awfully laggy. If those have been cleared up, I'll be happy to give them another go, but as of now I'm happy with CM7 and I have my emergency #s stored... I only suggest anyone on MIUI/CM7 (other than Trigger) do the same as a precaution.
And for the record, I am a college student- I'm 19, so just over 18, and while I've never needed to call police, I needed to call an ambulance once when I got hit by a car, but unfortunately I landed on and broke my old flip phone (this was a few years back) in that accident. Thankfully I only had really minor injuries. I'd certainly suggest having those numbers saved.
Sucks to be responsible but you got to do what you got to do.
ARE YOU GUYS SURE 911 DOESN'T WORK????
Ok so I installed the newly released stable CM. Obviously I'm not going to call 911 and test, but I tried a different number 311 and sure enough it routed and connected me correctly to the City of Los Angeles 311 Information System. This makes me think 911 should work too.
If 311 was routed correctly to the City of Los Angeles 311 Information System, why wouldn't 911 be correctly routed and connected?
There was an explanation a while ago in the Nightly thread about how 911 is handled... I understood it worked for some people, not for others. I'd say be responsible and add those contacts, but hey, you're welcome to try calling 911
Should I be in a situation where 911 is necessary, I'll give it a go. However, I'm not deleting those emergency numbers from my contacts just in case.
911 on Cm7 and MiUI
Ok so do we finally know if 911 works on CM-7 and MiUi or not?

In my experience last cm7.2 works well with agps (gps and data enabled) and it's tooo slow without data enabled.
In zeubea's cm9 gps seems not to work at all in latest release, at least in my case, fixs satellites but don't lock your position, with data enabled estimates your location considering umts or wifi (precision more than 600 meters).
I'm using 47.51.35.17U_7.13.35.05 but I'm not sure it makes difference.
I have the best experience with Blay0's ROM B 0.8.4 ( forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=866849 ). When I had a GPS-fix in the last time, I get a new fix in 10-15 seconds. The app GpsFix (market link) helps to get a short fix time.

CyanogenMod 7.2 stable - GPS problems
I just installed CM 7.2 on a few HTC Legend phones, only to find that with their radio, version 47.26.35.04_7.05.35.26L, the GPS does not work with CM 7.2 at all. When I start a program that tries to use the GPS, nothing happens. Not even the GPS icon appears in the status bar.
This is strange, because this is the radio version most newer HTC Legend phones come with.
I downgraded the radio to the next-older version I could find, 47.39.35.09_7.08.35.21. With this the GPS icon starts to blink, but never gets a fix. However, after I reboot the phone, it works. It still takes a relatively long time, at least a minute, to get a first fix, but works better afterwards.
This is a bad trap, because somebody who does not try the reboot trick may come to the wrong conclusion that this radio does not work with CM 7.2 and flash an unnecessarily old radio.
I have stopped testing and wanted to ask here first whether anybody has already done some more thorough tests with different radio versions and found which one works best, not only concerning the GPS, but also all the other radio functions. Which radio should I flash with CyanogenMod 7.2?

Radio version
47.26.35.04_7.05.35.26L is from what I could find out is the first radio for legend, Radio_47.39.35.09_7.08.35.21

Radio_47.51.35.17H_7.13.35.05
&
Radio_47.54.35.20U_7.13.35.13, this one I believe is supposed to be only for America.
If you look in the dev section you will find those 2 newer versions.
Its a pitty that there is no change log available to find out what the difference is between them all.

A Nandroid backup does not contain the radio.
Apparently the radio firmware is considered as closer to the hardware than to the software, too close to include it in a backup.

I had an old, semi-defective Legend and tried the apparently newer 7.51.35.17.zip radio on it. It works very well. Unlike some older radios it got a GPS fix at first try.
The ZIP package has the same structure as the other ones, so if it contains malware, it would have to be in the radio.img file.
My first guess is that, if somebody wanted to write Android malware, he would not start with a software component that is specific to one meanwhile oldish phone and then not care whether it remains mostly unknown. No proof, of course, but I will flash this radio into a couple of Legends and see how it goes.
Another observation: The radio version numbers consist of four numbers, similar to an IP address. However, the first number is always 7, and the third number is always 35. This indicates to me that this is not a hierarchical number, raising the question whether the second or the fourth number is the better indication of progress. What if the second number is just some code for some other characteristic? In that case ...35.26L would be the latest and greatest.
Actually I tend to think that the second number counts up the version. If so, then 7.51 would be a lot newer than any of the others.

I have read on other threads for lots of other android phones that if you flash wrong radio firmware it will destroy your phone.
The malware side is if it is fake, then flashing it would distroy the phone and you wouldn't get it back.

True, but I have just flashed 7.51.35.17 on three HTC Legend phones (a fourth to follow soon), and they all work very well. I have pulled this chestnut out of the fire for you already.
Zubea CM9Beta3
Has someone tested the new CM9Beta3?
Cause I have trouble with my GPS with that new Build. When I start a GPS using App, it does not always show a GPS Symbol like it should. Sometimes theres no Symbol, sometimes there is the symbol but its not blinking.
And the next is, when I end the GPS usign app the symbol remains in its state. Disable and Endable the GPS doesnt change anything on the Symbol but the App tells me that the GPS is disabled.
So is it just the Symbol wich is bugged or also the GPS? Cause it takes veery long.
When I remember Right the problem wasnt there on Beta1 or 2.
Any Ideas?
I've just compared the radio.img inside the versions 7.13.35.05 and 7.51.35.17 ... they are identical! I think, someone made a joke ...

Oh, so ugly! Anyway, this is the same radio then that we want to have installed anyway.
ranger4740 - you had exactly the right gut feeling. Fortunately the whole thing was harmless.

After looking at the version numbers for a while I had the feeling that they were the same, the "new" radio had the number 4 missing from the version number lol maybe the op made a honest mistake by leaving it out, the number 4 that is...

My very first try of GPS on beta 3, it took 218 seconds for lock, this was in the dash of my car driving along.
Btw that was without any mods or "GPS fixes"... straight out of the box.

GPS

Anyone know what ROMs have working GPS? I prefer 4.1 ROMs.

I'm still using Slim ICS with 4.0.4. The GPS is ok, it works but still not great. I don't think my phone will ever be great though. I want to try out SlimBean but it seems they are having GPS issues among other things.
Honestly, I've found that GPS can be a real hit or miss depending on your specific phone.
All hardware is not created equally, unfortunately. I'd suggest testing a few different roms and find which works best
for you specifically...because I've had luck with GPS on roms where users have reported bad GPS, and no GPS on roms where
awesome GPS was reported.
Good luck!

I would use either PA or CM10, but you need to flash the 3 gps fix files located somewhere in the PA thread. I would not use Slimbean 3.0 if you really need GPS since even if you do flash the files, no satellites come in view at all. I got a lock below 10 sec outside driving on monday at 7:30 pm. Accuracy was about ~25 feet, so it was really good. I was on CM10. Anyway, both have really good GPS as long as you have the 3 GPS files. They are called: GPS - Experia Files, YAGF2, and cwm-cm9-gps-wrap. Flash it in the order I wrote it in. They arent hard to find. Just type the names into Google. Or look in the PA thread. Good luck bro, and as Xenoism said, it also varies with device. If your device was made before Nov 2010, you probably wont get a lock no matter what unless you did the hardware fix. Even with the hardware fix, you'll still need these 3 files.
EDIT: Because I'm nice, I found the post where Jrafael posted the GPS files. It is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33575684&postcount=504
I have great gps with SlimBean and the 3gps fixes, its even better than my Galaxy Nexus. However, I owned a couple Vibrant and they all seem to have difference performance. Try the hardware gps fix if you're brave.
Note that for SlimBean if you patch mismatched patches it can make GPS stop working completely, only patch gapps from their own site.

Which version of Slimbean are you on? 2.9 works fine, but 3.0 is stone dead. (From my experience and a bunch of other members) I flashed the files and rebooted, tried getting a lock and not even one satellite appeared. Usually on other roms i get locks in less than 10 secs and after deep sleep, less than 20. I dont think he'll need the hardware fix if his phone is built after Nov 2010. But if its built before, then he'll definitely need it if he needs GPS that bad. That or get a new phone with GPS or buy a GPS :good:

unable to get gps to lock

Update: nevermind, i just flashed back to the rooted stock rom amd gps is working correctly..i guess i'm done with custom roms..they don't work as well as stock =).
Hey guys, I am currently running the black star xi rom. I'm having trouble getting my gps to lock. I have used the tools available in the system setting to install the att gps config and stock gps config, but both of those don't lock the gps when i running navigation. So, im unable to get voice navigation going. I would have posted this on the black star xi thread...but i don't meet the 10 posts requirement to post there.

Haven't had any issues with really anything but the new camera not showing on SOA build 3. I was on Padawan v8 which was a really stable and nice and fast rom. No GPS issues ever and do not seem to have any on this new rom I just installed yesterday. Hopefully the official JB will be out soon we'll see.
For some reason none of the AOSP or AOKP ROMs (which sadly is a majority of them) work very well for the Note GPS. The only ROMs I have found with good GPS support for the NOTE have been either Stock ROMs or custom ROMs which were derived from a Stock ROM.

Good to know. Which is why I guess Padawan v8 was so stable for me. Thanks for that info.

Honestly it kills me too. I LOVE the new features on ROMs like JellyBeer and other CyanogenMod types, but I'm a nerd and use GPS everyday, and it keeps pushing me back to the other ROMs for the GPS performance.

I understand that. Probably fixing to switch back to Padawan v8 if I cannot get the new camera options to work properly in SOA build 3.

Maybe start by reposting your issue so others can understand it. If I understand what you wrote, you have the same problem but your navigation apps locate you easily. And that doesn't make sense. Are you trying your GPS outside??
Srry i type fast n misspelle loll (idk how to spell misspelle) okay so wat i meant was that the only app that just keeps sayin "searchin for gps" is the navigation app. The maps app pinpoints my location easily as dies fb n any other app requesting my location. Ive tried every fix i could find on the web and nothing has worked for me! Ive seen fixes with flashing a stock gb radio it didnt work. The gps test app fix didnt work. Ive flashed countless roms from gb to jb n still same issue. N yes im outside ive even been on the roof! (seriously ive been up there am terrified of heiqhts n was stuck for hours didnt think it throuqh lol) thnx for any help.
