Just want to know what efs is and why we have to make a back up.

a short answer is that it contains, amongst other things your imei, very important!

efs is a file in which phones imei and other importatn data is stored...
we hav to make backup it becoz if something goes wrong u can restore it n claim ur warrenty

My galaxy I9300 is lost some file in /efs folder and i don't have a full backup. So, i need a full backup efs.img or efs.tar.gz to restore it.
I hope someone can share it for me.

What so you can have our imei number!!!! Nice try,...
Try flashing a stock rom see if it brings it back, there is also plenty of threads about this subject you should of done some reading first...

If you don't have a backup of your original EFS folder you are pretty much screwed

eri version unavailable is normal.
It is not efs issue. or any issue at all.
Try to explain your problem.

Enhanced Roaming Indicator is showed only when your carrier use it. If not, there will be 'not available' information and you shouldn't worry about that.

Agree with you ! No-one will give you their EFS backup (containing the must important information about their galaxy S3).
Foolish guy is foolish....
If you really want someone's IMEI number than you should be permanently banned from this forum. IMEI clonning is illegal and stupid because both phones will be inoperative if thay will have the same identification numbers.
You said your IMEI is ok and you have problems with ERI. We have told you that this isn't an error. Don't push up.

I dont need imei i just restored it with box. Just remove nv_data files from archive..if u so worried about your imei.

omg remove nv_data files from backup to prevent imei clone...read before type
I don't know what the dude who begun this thread is or was up to but I do know that I have lost my EFS backup and as such have a GS3 I9300 which isn't working to fix.
I have searched at length and have come to know the IMEI and serial of the phone can be edited with a HEX Editor out of the nv_data.bin file and this information is on block 0188150 a-f and 0188160 0-4. I have tried it but since my nv_data.bin which I generated was corrupted in the first place, it made little or no difference.
If that truly is possible, why not edit those bits out and then share leaving pointers on how to get it personalized per the benefactor's phone.
Inasmuch as it's "risky" because no one is to be trusted, you should acknowledge the fact that, it is because we're searching for answers and solutions to questions and problems we're having, and discoveries we've made with our handsets, that is why we are here in the first place.
I believe there is ALWAYS a way to go about things differently. Let's help one another!

Dude, if we give you our efs backup/s, you'd have OUR IMEI numbers, OUR SERIAL numbers.
That's illegal, first thing.
Second of all, that means you have our warranty, so if you send your device in, and you don't have warranty anymore - we don't either..
So, basically: Big T for tuff...
It's your own fault, for not creating a proper backup, live with the consequences..

I have seen that many many users have problem with their IMEI after flashing custom Roms . can some one please explain why this happens? I know that flashing a nandroid backup will solve issue but please explain WHY this happens at the first place?

Some users have this problem as it is only the users who have not followed rule one i guess its poor flashing .
Rule one backup EFS ,
NOTE NANDROID neither backs up nor restores EFS folder so your statement is plain wrong .

I admit I would also be curious as to what operations make the IMEI change? As in, what kind of mistakes from the user can lead to messed up IMEI / EFS?
PS: my EFS is backed up in a gazillion places
Really why and how does a poor flash affect IMEI of a phone? And how does flashing can go wrong unless u deal with pit files?

Let us look at it like this 99% to 100% of posts saying changed or lost IMEI are from Noobs . Noobs can do wonders as they don't read FAQS and GUIDES and prefer to blunder on . Thats why my reply was bad flash .
Odia is the guy who would probably no why and may even have already posted why .

You should have created a backup of your EFS partition before flashing or deleting anything.
Remember it for the next time ... first create a backup !

I am a newbie, although I rooted my phone months ago. I will be upgrading to Ice Cream Sandwich soon and am looking for the best, easiest, and safest way to do it. Most of all, I'm soooo glad and thankful you shared this important information on how to back up my efs folder.

We are so manny that have tried alot here, but our SGS3 have turned into a PDA and no use Tried earliere to create a guide or get one that worked after installing a MG4 ROM, but did not have any success and my phone still have the genetric IMEI, everybody says restore your EFS backup BUT I don't have any of those.
Know here is a solution for it, but have not foundt it yet, alot of people are crying ablout this that our fones are useless.
Moderators says stop posting and read 1000's of other post that have the same problem, but when I don't have found any or nobody have PM'ed me with a solution, then I ask before everybody is post about the same problem.
Can anyone make a stiky post with some ways to restore lost IMEI or guide us true a restore of a rom that reads our IMEI correct again?

Step 1) restore efs backup
Step 2) try reflash original rom
Step 3) if you were ever on mg4, ensure you stick with mg4 baseband
Step 4) send for repair
There's your guide.

You were not alone my friend. I had same issue and same levels of frustration for days.
You could have seen my thread but it was sgy specific.
"Solution": Use odin flash stock rom firmware with "Clear EFS".and "Repartition" checked.
The above was only solution that worked for me. I recovered imei.
Once restored I took backup of EFS using galaxytoolbox app on playstore and copied those img files to pc for future emergency.
Pressing THANKS easier than typing.

You can't find a solution to EFS corruption when not having a backup, because there isn't one! If the three suggestions by RootSU don't work then no amount of crying is going to fix your phone, send it for repair.
All the guides and stickies have good advise on what to do before you customise your phone -backup your efs folder keep it safe.

Then only clear efs in odin can be tried. To me solution worked without backup.

Don't take this the wrong way, but I think i9300 users should only take advice from other i9300 users, when we're talking about things like efs which differs considerably between Samsung models.

I suppose if you are desperate and going to need a paid for repair then any trick posted will be tried .
But a significant proportion of bricked phone are due to advice not for that phone .
In some cases an IMEI repair may be done under warranty but the more you mess about the greater the risk of having to pay for a repair .

without backup it is really difficult though
maybe if you describe exactly what you have done that you have lost it, people might be able to better help you
but first read the linked thread.
It's pointless answering these threads, they don't know how they broke the efs and didn't make a backup anyhow. There are thousands of identical questions, none of them accept that there isn't an easy solution.
