[Q] switching from rage kernel to x-kernel - Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini, Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, A

hello people, this is probably the noobest question in the world ever but is it possible to switch from rage kernel to x-kernel without factory reset or anything.
its been a while i didnt play around with custom roms and kernels and make me forgot how to do so.
im currently using a rage kernel with stock .62 gingerbread. i found out my battery drains too fast. not sure if kernel problems or batterry problems.
now i want to test out other kernel which is this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1451150 X-kernel. hoping for it to give a better battery life than rage kernel gb.
so how to do this process again?
im too busy to check out the tutorial somewhere here. **** me, right?

Do a nandroid backup using clockworkmod before flashing xkernel . Flash the xkernel . If you lose data then restore the nandroid backup which you created before while you were using rage kernel.
I don't think you'll lose your data but it's always a good thing to do a nandroid backup. You don't know when you'll need it .

No, x kernel should be prerooted, too. Just flash it, it should work. But doing a nandroid backup first is a good idea, just to be on the safe side

im afraid i will lose root during the flashing process. cause im using link2sd. if root gone, the link2sd will go crazy and all my linked apps will be gone.
but thanks will try it tomorrow

No you won't lose root. Xkernel is a prerooted kernel.

There are UCKH7 and UCKK6 stock kernels floating around. No need to back them up, they're out there already.

help please....

I don't know what info you will need so please just ask if I'm to vague.
I upgraded to ics but couldn't find a root version that would give titanium backup root access, when I tried to flash back to a previous non ics ROM it would get stuck on boot screen, my only option was to reflash ics and restore a backup which was Android 2.3.6.
Now I have severe battery problems, my Baseband is - I9100XXLPB AND KERNEL is XWLA4 running CHECKROM6hd.
I'm stuck for what to do, any advice would be much welcomed, to be honest I'm not sure what question I should be asking.
I want to remain on CHECKROM6hd with jk deluxe settings with full root access, this is important for me, the Baseband and kernel look to be the ics versions but flashing gets me stuck on boot screen, only ics flash will work :/
any help advice would be great, thanks guys...

A huge number of things factor to battery.
LA4 is the kernel for GB. No ICS kernel would work on GB, it would probably prevent the phone from booting up if you did flash a ICS kernel on a GB rom.
It would probably be best to do a factory reset or even reflash the rom after a full wipe. (after you back up your data)
If you dont want to do any of that, just install betterbatterystats (can be found searching xda forum for free)
Install the app, and use your phone like you do and then check the app to see whats causing the drain.
what is the baseband? I don't understand what the baseband and kernel really do, how they relate, are they a mismatch?
thank you

Baseband is the modem, it is completely independent from the kernel and ROM, you can use ICS modems on GB and GB modems on ICS without any issue, if you are having reception or data speed issues you can change it by flashing one in CWM from the modem thread, if you aren't i'd just leave it alone.
I changed the Kernel to XXKI4,
The battery seems to be behaving as normal again
sweet

Can I take this opportunity to ask what recommendations any of you might have for a good baseband, kernel and build number, for a jk deluxe settings ROM that is battery friendly please

Nandroid backup is not backing up the Baseband, that was why you did not get back the Baseband of of your previouse ROM (Checkrom). you will be having the Baseband of the last flashed ROM...
Are you sure you have flashed the Kernel XXKI4 on the rom XWLA4 (checkrom).?
I think you mean to say is "BASEBAND" not the "KERNEL"
yes baseband lol, but it was a 'kernel' from kitchen pro I used to flash/install it....... can I blame autocorrect?
Me?
I'm English...... as in England.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
i think ki4 is a good baseband(modem, radio)and as far as kernel there r lots of good ones like siyah,neak,redpill.....first decide gb or ics...c which is best for u?cause many don like ics an reverted to gb.....but all depends on how u use....remember every phone is diff in thier own way.....

Rooting By installing a custom rom

I found one thing that may help some one.. MOST of you may already know this, but there are noobs like me....
If you have an unlocked bootloader, then you can install a custom kernel which is pre rooted..
so after installing a pre rooted custom kernel , if you install the stock kernel.. the root is still there... right?

Ouf why should we switch back after flashing a prerooted kernel? Stock kernel isn't as good as custom kernel like rage kernel
But you can root without flashing a custom kernel, look in the pinned threads :good:
Normally root should stay there, if the prerooted kernel copies the root files...

return to official rom

So I had this rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1876792) and i wanted to go back to my official rom. I went to CDW wiped out system, date, ect etc and I tried to restore my backup which I did with my CWM before I use the custom rom. Everything ok but when I reboot me device it shows the bootlogo of the custom firmware and not the sony and after that it goes black. How do I solve this? I searched but I didnt find anything
Please be more exact on what you wiped and formatted all. What kernel and cwm version are you using? Did you made the nand backup with the same cwm version?

And you flashed back stock (based) kernel?
When you flash .ftf rom using a flashtool, it flashes all official components (rom, kernel, baseband) by default. I apologize flashtool is a most useful method to go back at stock rom. What do you think?

@Madfysh No I didnt change kernel again, when I did that I had the rom that the dev from here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1876792) had put...

Download flashtool. Download ftf of firmware u want to flash. Open flashtool and drop that downloaded ftf file in flashtool window. Then check no final verification. Click ok. Then follow instructions given by flashtool. Done. Simple as that.

And be careful with device drivers. Install it from a Flashtool folder to avoid a flashing problems.

One last thing, as I said in my first post before i go to jelly bean i made a back up using CWM(The backup was on official ICS 4.0.4 + rooted + BL open). If I want to go back at that backup the only thing i need to do is go to CWM, delete system, delete data, detete etc etc and I do the restore?
Or I need first to flash a kernel for ICS and THEN restore the backup? Im still kinda confused with the kernel thing and the restoration...

Yea. Cwm doesn't reatore kernel. Just the system, data dalvik etc.
You'll need an ics kernel like alliance or suave to boot into the restored backup.

Any kernel compatible with Stock ics

I recommend you to flash a kernel that has been used at time you created a backup, because I had a problems with Wi-Fi when I do «hot-flashing« from suave kernel to night - elf.

If I format system will it delete the backup?
Also If I install stock kernel back from custom kernel then do I have to install CWM again?

If you used cwm from kernel, then yes, after you flash stock kernel, you will need to instal cwm to system.

I highly doubt that someone with custom kernel would go and install cwm in system.

Reflashing rom

hi, i have a noob question, i dont know so much about repartitioning and other things, my question is, when upgrading a rom it does at normal procces (wipe data and install zip) . im taljking about for example ,i'm now in shostock 3 , it is android 4.1 and if i would back to cm9 , could i do that?. i have a nandroid backup of cm9, can i just restore this backup and i wont have problems without matter the rom i'm coming?, sorry for my english and thanks for the understanding.:good:
I'm not familiar with CM9, but the only issue would be if the ClockworkMod Recovery in the SHOstock3 kernel is compatible with the backup made with thebackup made with CM9. I'm thinking it might not be because the Jebo kernel in SHOstock3 backs up a pre-load partition.
Do You think then that is better flash again cm9 instead of the backup?

Doesn't matter if it doesn't work just flash fresh. Not gonna brick your phone or anything.
