So hi guys!
I have a question regarding the location service of JB. I'm talking about the google location service over wireless connection - not gps.
I have two devices - both running jelly bean. I have Google now completely disabled also i ticked off location history, i simply want to use location for stuff like weather apps and maps, so i see where i am when i open the map.
I have this feature enabled since i was running Froyo on my Desire back in the days And it was never an issue in terms of battery drain.
But now its just aweful. On both my devices i can basically DOUBLE the standby time when i disable the location service... And if i check BetterBatteryStats app it always places location services in first place for wakelocks.
Here comes the question: Is this a general Bug on Jelly Bean or is there a way to make it behave like it did on ICS or GB? I dont need it to update every 1min or whatever it does to drain my battery... Once every hour is more than sufficient! Are there settings for this somewhere?
See Screenshot on how it looks like on my Transformer prime. For my SGS III this would show up as Android-System, but its the same thing in BetterBatteryStats.
cheers!

I have been wondering the same thing. What I don't understand is why the drain is so bad even on Wifi. I don't know much about coding, but it seems like there should be no reason to check your location as long as you are on a Wifi network because obviously you haven't moved far since you are still connected. I have over 30 minutes held awake by maps and never left my Wifi network.

Map applications are the most power drain , it must open the wireless network and GPS,They are all power consumption
Well at least i'm not alone anyway i disabled the location services on my devices for the moment and only enable them when i need it. Big improvement in standby drain! Its a workaround but no solution...
cheers

Maybe you can use One Power Guard from android play shop, can help you solve the standby problem.
clouds5, did you ever find a permanent solution better than to turn on location services when needed? Your op describes my situation perfectly (except with sgs ii, jb) and I now only tick on location services right before I fire up maps/navigation/etc. Makes a huge difference in the amount of standby time, but I'm looking for a more satisfying solution.

Hey xda.
Seems like some google service is keeping the phone awake, all the time. I tried turning off auto syncing but no go

Any suggestions? I'm on Villainrom atm
Probably you have Latitude turned on or you have Maps in the background trying to find its location all the time.
First turn off Settings => Location and Security => Use Wireless Networks
Then try to turn off Latitude. Since it's one of the first apps that I freeze after flashing a new ROM, I don't know how it's done.
Wireless Networks was actually turned on. Turned it off. I will monitor it to see if its being kept awake now, thanks. Is it supposed to keep the phone awake that much though?
Latitude was turned off though, i think. At least it says "Join Latitude" in google maps, so I suppose its disabled.
@OP- You tried Turning Off Sync, but you haven't tried turning off GPS. It is on all time.
Regards.
Nah GPS was off all of the time
Ask about it on the Better Battery Stats thread.

According to your screenshot, it's the network location finding service that's keeping your phone alive, so turning wireless network location service should help. However, if it's not Latitude or Maps, you have another program which is constantly trying to find the phone's location. It could be a widget or any other app. Take a close look at what's running in the background and try to find out.
Ever since I installed JB (4.1.1) I have noticed a decrease in life. You probably heard this story before.
The native Battery consumption app shows Android OS uses most energy, followed by Device Idle.
So I installed BetterBatteryStats to have a look.
These screenshot is from this morning. Left the phone overnight untouched (from 12 am on).
Note:
My settings are the same as they were before the JB upgrade. And I use the phone the same way.
No Data Connection?
Why does it seems to be looking for a signal? Is that cell signal? I am in full signal area.
I use T-Mo and my area gets HSPA+.
I have Settings > Wireless and networks> Mobile Networks > Network Mode set to GSM/WCDMA (Auto Mode). Leave is as is?
The second most energy consuming is WiFi. I always left is on before the upgrade. It probably always used this much but now it's worse?

Your android OS is consuming waaaaaaay to much power it should be between 7-12%. I'd reflash stock ROM and go from their buddy. Also, wipe your battery stats.

Thank you for responding.
What falls under Android OS?
I use a live wallpaper (Alive Wallpaper in the Play Store from http://alivewallpaper.co) and the screen is off when I am not using the phone.
Is the video wallpaper using power even when the phone is sleeping (or supposed to be)?
Edit: how do I reset my battery stats in the native app? There is no contextual menu.
Its just the processes that fall within android OS....stuff you have no control over

Do you did a battery recalibration? After flash a new ROM is a must.
Battery calibration using this method right?
1. Use your phone till it shuts off
2. Before charging it turn it back on and do it again.
3. With the phone off plug it in and recharge it overnight or atleast 6-8 hours.
4. Turn it on and and use Battery Calibration - by NĂ©Ma.
5. Use the phone till it dies again and then recharge and use phone as you normally would.

No, I have never done this.
Thank you for pointing it out.
i was about to start a new thread when i saw this so thought its best to post here. im having the same problem
here is the logcat from my phone. 8hours overnight and down to 41%!
merry christmas
You'd be better off writing in the BetterBatteryStats thread
Thanks. Yea I just have.
tapp'd on my S3
Disable Google now, will save loadsa battery

Rather than disabling Google Now. Do this
Disable Maps, Whatsapp, Facebook. They all run in background. Use App Quarantine to quickly enable disable when issue required.
Enable mobile network location access.
Also restrict background data of apps that ate high in usage which could cause wake locks.
Google now knows where you are without Maps running, just NetworkLocationService under Google Services in running apps.
Use other battery conserving precautions in conjunction.
You could potentially go for days depending on your usage

Hi, i have some problems with this process, in battery use from settings, the android OS has a BIG BATTERY DRAIN, this works since the phone is unplugged, and my phone haven`t deep sleep, i lose 2-3% percent per hour in better battery stats the phone is awake ALL TIME and CPU SPY show me the lowest frequency is 384mhz and deep sleep doesn`t exist HELP ME PLEASE
Have you tried turning off all non-important services and sync , and see if that helps ??
Also there are some after market applications available on play-store that prevents such wake ups , by killing them. I couldn't recall them properly but I think they are named as Deep Sleep battery saver or something similar.
You can also use android tuner , to see what are the causes behind that.(Task manager has extensive features to look and control them.)
i havent active services (auto sync off, facebook notifications off, messenger off, gps off, google location off, etc), so i dont know what happen ill try to post some screen of my battery uses, this may help, thanks man! and sorry for my english
try some app like android tuner , it'll tell you which specific process is keeping it alive . It'l give more detailed insights into the running tasks.

Anyones knows what happen with my battery???
Can't say about it just by looking at these charts . You'' have to use some third party tool that provides monitoring of system processes . It'll give some info.
I just got my S5 on Monday, but there is a bug w/ Google services or something. I can post photos here, but the services is using too much of battery on stand by if anything. Google + used 25% of my battery from like 10 am to like 4 pm, so I disabled it since I don't use it at all. I have no location history set up and I have Google Now running, never use it, but sometimes nice to have.

What's your location mode? If it's high accuracy or battery saving, that's why. It keeps the google location service running and constantly polling for your location even with location history off. Google Now is also a big battery drain.

This is my third S5, but newest one on Monday, but it's location history off. I went to Best Buy to get a reflash on my S5 and now it's fine, but now, Lookout is eating up 20% of the battery. Can't have it near perfection w/ technology, meh.
Observing this issue since i got my Nexus 6P, Google Play services are always on top of the list on battery consumption.
If you check details of consumption - it shows mobile radio active for too much hours even if mobile is on idle mode. You can see wakelocks even when the screen is off.
Observation: I don't use wifi unless i have to install some app or download some games data, for other things I rely on my 3G data of 1GB. But I have observed consumption of that got increased with Nexus 6P - it's (1GB) hardly lasting for 10 days. Actually I am not using data as much I use to in my Galaxy S3, even then its consumption is very high.
Something is always running in background which is consuming this data.
I guess it is google play services which is consuming this huge data.
Is anyone else observing this (If somebody observed very closely on battery & data consumption) ?
Seems extremely strange... Have you checked what background services are set to sync? I mean mine is active sync on every option possible and I never experience huge consumption.

I have all sync On as I don't want any app to not sync with server and even on my last galaxy S3 I use to do that.
On my nexus 6P (Not-rooted yet), i have installed greenify to hibernate few apps as well like - Facebook or any other app which normally run in background even then there is no improvement i can see on battery or data consumption.
I am sure if this Google Play services some how goes down in battery consumption list then this data consumption issue will automatically get resolved and battery as well.
