[Q] Navigation app stuck on "waiting for location" - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ever since I got my Samsung Galaxy S III the google navigation app has not worked properly. I can get my location fine in google maps and other apps but for some reason when I try to use the navigation app it just says "waiting for location" until I give up and close the app.
I've found a few other threads on a similar issue but no apparent fix.
No custom rom or any other modifications. All location services are enabled and I've tried all variation of on/off for each.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thank you!

I Would start with wiping data and cache for the app to see if that helps. If that does not work, try uninstalling the app and re-installing.

I assume this entails clearing data and cache for the Maps application? I can't seem to find a separate app for Navigation. Also, I assume, uninstalling and re-installing Maps?

I just tried Nav FREE (because it supports Canada) and it works fine. The only app with any gps issues is the Navigation app It seems.

Are you rooted?

Nope not rooted.
So after about three weeks of not working it randomly worked when i tried today. Perhaps something i tried actually worked but was delayed? Who knows. I'll update this thread if it stops again.

Same problem here with the Nav app, started a week or so ago - used to work just fine. And waze still works well.

i too have this issue. maps works fine but nav is completely broken, completely random. tired fastfix, nothing is working (i'm rooted and running xenonHD)

Same problem here, although only on custom ROM. Maps works, but Navigation is stuck on Waiting for Location....

Happens also on GNex
UPDATE - To fix this look at this forum post. It did the trick for me.
Same problem here, although I'm running Stock Android 4.2 on a Galaxy Nexus.
Started randomly today (worked fine in the morning, "Waiting for location" in the afternoon).

GPS location is set, works flawlessly in Maps, Sygic, Navigon, Waze, Ulysse Speedometer, GPS Test and GPS Fix.
Tried everything, from clearing data, force stop the Maps app, rebooting, taking out the battery for a couple of minutes, clearing or updating A-GPS - noting work. I don't have any updates since the update to Android 4.2 installed the latest version of Maps as well.
There is another odd behavior. If I start the Navigation app after clearing data, force stopping Maps app and clearing A-GPS, it will load the main screen (speak navigation, type address, home etc.) fine. If I type in an address or a place, the app closes without any warning or error message. Upon reopening the application, it starts doing the "Waiting for location" spell again.
The only thing I haven't tried is a factory reset.

I have the solution! Man this drove me SO crazy the other day I desperately needed Nav.... anyway
1. Go to "Settings > Accounts > Google > Location Settings".
2. Flip the switch to "On" (I found this was off in my case).
3. Try Google Navigation again, it should work fine.
Apparently in JB the location settings need to be on in 2 different places.
I hope this helps, I found it at another forum.

Awesome, I had no idea that Maps used one, and Navigation used the other. You sir, assisted me greatly, kudos to you!

Has anyone found any other workaround for this? I am having the same issue... GPS locks immediately on ALL other apps needing GPS info, but Google Nav just sits there at "Waiting for Location"

Does post 14 not solve it?

I have same issue and S3 was made in China.
I have reset the phone but still same problem.
So I switch the another S3 motherboard that is working.
After replacing the mob the gps is working.
So. The problem lies in bad motherboard.
If I knew from beg. I would have returned but now it is after one year.
Don't waste time reseting or clearing the data.

Since when has it been like this? Seems like something must have happened, but we don't know what...
You could always trying clearing the app's data and cache, if it still shows up in the app list (as nooomoto said, under settings, manage apps). Or restoring from a TiBu if you're rooted and have a backup.
Well I tried uninstalling com vending... Bad idea. Now when I click on what used to be the Play Store it says I've uninstalled it... But com vending still shows up in manage apps...
How could this happen, I don't even have root.
I guess I'll have to root and install GAPPS.
I would try checking install unknown sources and install the latest play store from the web.

You meant the "Phone" icon?
Remove that icon on your bottom right of yr home screen first, then go into App Drawer and see if Play icon is there or not.
Try installing this older version of the market. Make sure u have unknown sources checked off.
It should update back to play store after the first time u go into it.

Looking over your shoulder...
Does it work if you use it from the app drawer?
I've seen that occasionally, if you have a launcher homescreen icon, the update fubars it - but if you delete it and place it back from the app drawer it's fine.

Thanks for the link. It installed fine. However, after accepting license agreement the Market loading icon freezes and vending crashes. I tried clearing Market data...same problem. The icon in the drawer also says Play Store. Which is weird because it is not the play store icon but a faded icon with an SD card on it.
Different phone, same topic - Google Play Store.
Noobish question:
I downloaded vending.apk from here at XDA
Installed it over my stock Android Market v2.3.3
With the old Android Market, it showed in Settings>Applications as "Market"
Since manually updating to Google Play Store:
now when I go into Settings>Applications
It is showing as "Com.android.vending..."
Is this normal?
Shouldn't it show as "Google Play Store" or something like that?
---------- Post added at 02:57 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:01 AM ----------
{Fixed} Disregard above question.
Just goes to show ya how useful XDA Search button can be.
From another thread I got the simple idea to clear the process's cache and stored data, reboot phone ... tadda ... now Settings > Applications is showing Google Play Store.
Google Play icon, widget, updating functions - all available and working.
Thanks to all the hard workin' folks here at XDA
Maybe something in the Dalvik cache is causing problems? In /data/dalvik-cache I see [email protected]@[email protected]
Can you clear the cache through the stock recovery menu? It's been so long since then, that I've forgotten.
In a (sort of) related note- my Google Play experience was that an expired credit card was causing RPC errors when attempting purchase books. I had to go into google wallet and delete the expired card (thanks to the Google support ticket team for the solution), now all is well.
Anyway, hope this helps,

Google Maps & Navigation issue

Hi All,
Since I got the S3 I've been running the rooted stock ROM in preperation for a stable CM10 without any major issues. Yesterday I did it, downloaded CM10 and the latest gapps, did a CWM backup, wiped the phone and installed the new ROM.
Everything running fine apart from one thing.
Google Maps will not find my location using GPS, but if I enable the cell tower option then I get a rough position. Navigation gets stuck on 'Searching for GPS' and will not lock on to my location even though I have the solid Circle on the taskbar at the top. Other GPS applications such as Endomondo work fine and the GPS locks on quickly and is really accurate.
So I conclude that this is an issue with Maps/Navigation - I've no idea how to fix it. I was going to go back to an older gapps package but I don't think maps/navigation is included in the gapps packages, it certainly wasn't included in the latest one that I downloaded. I had to download Maps from the Play store.
Has anybody had this issue before?
Thanks
I have the same issue since I installed super nexus rom

As I said, the issue seems to be with Maps / Navigation, not GPS (Other GPS applications work fine).

Just gets stuck on that screen
I had the same problem yesterday after I flashed a MIUI ROM based off of CM10. I got my too work by enabling the Google location services, making sure to allow all permissions for the map app (LBE Guard app wasn't allowing some permissions), turning on GPS and then restarting my phone. After that maps picked up my location.

Its not maps is the problem. It picks up GPS in maps no bother, its when you switch to navigation it won't work. No one else seems to be reporting the issue on the super nexus thread so I'm not sure what's causing it

So I've tried enabling all of the location services and the maps application is more accurate (gives my position based on either wi-fi or network) but it still will not work. I've had no prompts from the Superuser application and I can't find a whitelist or anything where I can add maps to it.
What a bizarre issue....
Hi..yep we are also experiencing gps connection issues with google nav....with ELK4 leak...im now using Copilot and it works with no issues.

S Memo and S Health apps not working.

S Memo will let me create a text or drawing memo but as soon as I save it, it freezes up for a few seconds and then goes to a black screen where it says "Unfortunately, S Memo has stopped". S Health does basically the same thing. It lets you enter your age/height/weight/etc but then as soon as you hit start, it freezes, black screen, stopped message.

I thought it might have something to do with me disabling some of the bloatware in application settings, but I re-enabled everything and they still aren't working.
Is anyone else having this problem?
Working fine here, first time I've ever tracked my steps/food... neat stuff.
Hate to say it, but disabling some of the apps may not be necessary, and even restoring them can lead to issues like this You know what comes next.
I just did a factory data reset and the problem is still there. S Memo and S Health still don't work.
Oh well, time to set everything up on the phone how I want again.
That's strange. I opened S Health the other day and it required an update, not from the play store, but from the Samsung update app (?)... which doesn't appear to be a selectable application. Weird. I would say try dumping the cache and deleting all data for the app in case something remained on the SD/Internal Memory

I am, just after trying to save in S Memo or trying to launch S Health. S Health did initially open and let me enter my info but then stopped when hit continue.
I'm having a similar issue with S Health. Able to enter age/weight but after that, every attempt to open the app results in a force close. I've tried deleting all data which seems to fix the situation except when I input the information again, the problem recurs.
Deleting the data for S Health and S Memo doesn't do anything for me. S memo fails when trying to save and S Health fails after entering your initial info.
bump it =.=, same happened to me.

I resolved it two nights ago, but not sure what the problem was.
I broke down and did a factory reset since that would be the next step if I brought it back. The first reset, I walked through the setup wizard and entered in my account information. It proceeded to automatically download all my apps and the problem was still there. So I reset again and skipped through the setup wizard to prevent the apps from downloading, and lo and behold s memo and heath were working. For kicks I reset again and walked through the wizard; apps downloaded again and the problem came back. I proceeded to uninstall all apps and widgets but it didn't clear the problem. That sort of jives with the problem present when booting into safe mode.
I think that since I uninstalled the apps, I lost getting the apps to automatically download. So I manually tried installing them. The best list I had was the list from using helium to back up app data. I manually downloaded 44 of 46 apps in the list. The two I didn't were a chess game and I thought v cast song id. Although I don't see the later as a choice for restoring in helium tonight. It stood out when I saw it, because I couldn't find it in "my apps" on the play store or in the play store. I think it was a pre-loaded app on my previous Droid X phone. I just started using helium with the s4, so I went to bed trying to figure out how any sign of the app would be on the s4.
I don't think the helium list was everything on my phone so the next step is to load everything in "my apps" in the play store.

S health is now working for me but I haven't had a chance to play much with it. I initially used Kies to backup; but after taking 5 hours to restore, I learned the layout of apps and widgets on various pages is lost. Hence my switch to Helium.
Be mindful when removing bloat. S Memo requires the snote provider apk in system. S health requires sensor and health provider in system. Removing these necessary dependencies with make these apps force close.

Can't find apps in Playstore. VS996

I am having a hard time finding apps in the Play Store (Example: Pinterest) and was wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same? I've tried all of googles troubleshooting steps including deleting cache and uninstalling updates. Signing out and back into google, along with a reset under settings. LG told me that I would have to send my phone in to check for hardware problems.
I can find the apps when I google search them. When I click the information tile to install, a blank window appears saying "Retry". When it goes to open the app in the play store from google search, it says "This device is not compatible with this version". But if I go to search and download the APK from a mirror site with the same version number it installs fine. So I can still access the apps, it's just very tedious.

Nope, the most I've messed with as far as settings go is animation scaling. I went to look for Pinterest again in the app store and it's there with an update.... But I still can't download Groupon, Tinder and a few others yet. Could it be the apps don't support the V30 screen ratio yet or? I'm a noob when it comes to all of this, it's been like this though since I first got it in October. Kind of annoying that it works when I finally ask someone. Thanks for the quick reply!

Yeah I guess I will just have to keep checking back for either updates to the app or to see if more apps eventually pop up. I've updated to the most recent Google play store app via mirror site. So we shall see, thanks again for your help! :good:

If so, the mirror site apk may be your problem. Those are usually coded for either specific DPI or "all", which may not be what our phones require.

I had to force a manual update of the play store! The apps are now there. I had downloaded the play store from a mirror and used it to see if that would work. When it didn't, I reset my play store as suggested in the google trouble shooting settings. But the store is updating now and all apps that weren't appearing, now are! Here's what it was on before, and what it updated too. IDK why a forced time and date update didn't jumpstart it but oh well it's fixed haha.

Google Maps location jerks back and forth, jumps to nearby road, changing nav instr.

My brother and I both have Global Mi 8 phones with the latest stable version of MIUI (10.2.1.0). On both phones, the Google Maps location jumps around about 100 or maybe even 200 feet in any direction, causing the blue dot to make sudden jumps on screen, sometimes ahead, sometimes it goes a bit backward but, worse, sometimes it goes left and right. For example, on the highway, as we pass an off-ramp, the blue dot may jump to the right onto the off-ramp, causing instructions to be recalculated. Then it jumps right back onto the highway where it should be. It's super frustrating and both our phones do it almost precisely in the same way, at the same time sometimes. I've checked all the settings I can find and nothing seems out of order.

Interesting. I will try the google maps suggestions over there. Thanks.
The net result of what I learned from the other thread was that cleaning caches, clearing all data, etc. did not help. The only thing that they reported worked was uninstalling updates to Google Maps. Unfortunate that we can't use the newest version but if that is the workaround we will have to live with it until the next update.
Thanks

I used to have the same problem and I was absolutely furious, I even thought selling the mi 8, that kind of performance was unacceptable from a 2018 device.
I ended up flashing the latest stable through fastboot and uninstalling all maps updates, well it seems to work better for now (although not as well as my 2016 Axon 7) but it can get the job done now.
Anyway, that was my experience.
I'm using WAZE until the next MIUI update fixes this issue. Trust me, I miss using MAPS, however WAZE is a very good substitute.
For those who experience such problem with google maps download ver. 9.85.2 apk which is last known to work
So we basically need to wait for a firmware update that fixes it?
Or you could just read the posts in this thread and find the fix

I read the fix - installing old gmaps- but the actual fix would be being able to use recent gmaps, no?
We don't even know if it's a firmware issue. Those people affected all confirmed that it's only within google maps and that other gps/navigation software works just fine.
Most people - like myself - never even experienced this issue.
Global stable 10.0.3.0, 6 x global beta updates afterwards and now xiaomi.eu 9.1.17 - never had any issues with GPS or google maps specifically.
Do you actually need a specific google maps feature or bugfix that that came after the 9.85.2 release ?

It's an unnecessary hassle that I'd rather avoid.
my solution:
before start Maps do:
set gps in "basso consumo" (sorry i don't know in english, "Low" something)
activate A-GPS
run Maps, choose your destination, when tap GO maps ask if you want turn on google blabla, tap YES. Navigation start
sorry for my **** english '-_-
I'm on xiaomi.eu and had this issue.. tried the google adress for assited GPS.. same result..
Noticed yesterday that the IP that comes default on xiaomi.eu... as no response when pinging...
Try Waze app and it will be working fine I will try old version of Google maps too see if it fixes it. I will keep you up to date
Using a different app is not really a solution. Thankfully old gmaps works without issues for now.
I've turned off auto updates for Google Maps, and uninstalled updates, and things are going well so far.
Install google map version 10.5.1 works well with me.
Don't forget to switch auto update off.

Check it a couple times during a normal day. Does it keep getting reset to low accuracy and are you having trouble recalibrating it ?

I've actually noticed that the compass either stays at a low level of calibration or - at most - medium.
