Hi all. I am using the gingerbread speedmod kernel and I am on gingerbread stock rom. What kernels should I use to install the revolt JB rom? Thanks for any help in advance
Basically any ICS kernel. Most of them work with JB. Siyah kernel is a good choice. But when you flash the kernel, you'll have to install that Revolt rom right away since you won't be able to boot Gingerbread on ICS/JB kernel. You'll just get a bootloop.
Sent from my Galaxy S2 GT i9100
So what you mean is that when I am in odin, flash the kernel, immediately go to recovery mode and flash the rom? But I thought after you flash the kernel your phone will reboot and thus go into boot screen? Unless you take out the battery or something
First flash stock 4.0.3 firmware on your phone. Then install siyah. That'll give you custom CWM recovery. And using that you can install your JB ROM.
Any other way and you'll just be stuck with a bootloop. Hopefully you know all about having a nandroid backup, backing up your efs and basics of using Odin having previously installed a custom kernel

You kinda got me at flashing stock firmware and nandroid. How do I flash a stock firmware and do a nandroid backup? I mean I only rooted my phone with a video tutorial so I'm not really that familiar about other stuff...
Thats been done and asked many times over in this forum. Tutorials for all what you've asked are available in the General section. Do have a look at those and search some similar threads. If there's still something you don't understand, you can always ask and people are here to help. But like the rules say, search first mate.

I searched and I found stock firmware with Asia as the region but the country is Malaysia but I live in Singapore. The baseband version is also different. But can it work?
It'll work as long as its the firmware for your device.. ie.you don't flash an i9100G firmware on your i9100 and vice versa. The baseband deals with your signal. That can always be changed at a later stage if necessary.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Oh I understand now. I've searched the forums and found that 4.0.4 ICS which is leaked and may lead to a hard brick. But I can't find any 4.0.3 firmware as it's for i9100G...
Is this the correct thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1640812. Sorry if I'm a little paranoid...
Btw my model version is the GT-i9100. And do I download the kernel from the thread above?
Good enough. Download a 4.0.3 firmware from there. In the meantime read up on Odin since you'll need that to install the firmware. There's a huge noobs guide to using Odin somewhere on the forum. And also search for a tool to backup your EFS if you haven't already.
And don't forget to thank the posters. People take time out to help others. Only expect you to hit the thanks button in return

Firmware (ROM). Not kernel. The firmware is a pretty large download..around 200Mb or more whereas the kernel will barely be 10mb or so. If you only flash the kernel you'll have an ICS kernel and GB ROM. Won't work.

So do u have to get the kernel from another link? Since the link I showed you is for ICS. So that means any Siyah kernel would be fine as long as it's for my firmware, right?
Is there any chances of bricking of my phone?

No. If you install
the firmware, the kernel comes included in it.
There is just one siyah kernel. Different versions, but its still the same. Download and install the latest version for the S2. ie. v4.1.5 AFTER you're on ICS.

There is always a risk involved. It is minimized to almost near zero levels if you read all the guides and tutorials available on this site carefully. If you're too lazy to do that, then its your fault if you've bricked your device. If there's something you don't understand, use Google. There are instructions/step by step guides/ video walkthroughs/ galore. If everything else fails, ask.
As long as you've not hardbricked your phone with the emmc bug, its almost always recoverable even if bricked. And that's avoidable merely by sticking to 4.0.3.

I've rooted my phone using rachmat3 method and thats how far i've got because only just got phone as a gift and im scared to flash a new rom incase i brick my phone.
Is it safe to use the cwm.zip to flash a rom that i used from rachmat3 root method or do i need a updated version of cwm?
Can someone recommend a fully working paranoid android rom that i can use for daily use?
Which kernel would be best to use with paranoid android rom?
Should i flash a kernel before i flash a rom?
If i install paranoid android rom would i then have a permanant cwm on my device or would i still need to use my temporery cwm.zip?
What is the chances of me bricking my phone?

Flash what ever rom u want till its for GT-I9100
No need to worry
Just read the specific rom instructions carefully
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Yes mate now u can flash any Rom ....Just read the instruction before flashing
I would advise you to flash a safe kernel first before doing any wipe and flashing any roms. Siyah is a safe bet.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
1. Download ROM Manager and you'll be able to flash any ROMs you wish using that.
2. All the PA versions are working fine, so just browse through and choose for yourself.
3. Asking questions like that is against forum rules because they often lead to arguments. The best advice is just to download and flash different kernels and stick with which ever one you're happy with.
4. It really doesn't matter in which order you flash them. The result is still the same. I personally always flash the ROM first, but it doesn't make a difference.
5. If you use ROM Manager, as mentioned previously, even if you have to do a full wipe when flashing a different ROM, it doesn't matter because you can simply download it again anyway. Or just save it to your SD card.
6. The changes if bricking your phone are higher if you're worried about it. Just be sure to read all instructions given about installation and follow them perfectly and you'll be fine.
If after reading about flashing ROMs you are still worried, then you're better off waiting for a bit until you've done more research into what exactly is needed.

just follow the steps mentioned and follow some video (like on youtube) and it'll be easy!

Why don't flash custom kernel and use real CWMR?

Most ROM zips include kernels, so if somebody wants to stay with the same kernel, then it's necessary to flash custom kernel again.

You will need a pc if for example you flash a kernel and somethings not right. You cant get cwm, only download mode.
That happened to me when I flashed a siyah kernel.Phone was stuck and I couldnt boot into cwm.Only way to fix was boot to download mode and use odin/pc.

Within the next 30 mins, you should be running PA.
First, flash Siyah kernel with your temporary CWM recovery. Very safe

I have this problem: with stock CM 10.1 installation files, sometimes people are not able to call me and I am not able to call others. I only can fix this by restarting my I9100 or turning on and off airplane mode.
I asked about this issue in this forum, and one man recommended to install custom modem. So I would like to ask, what kind of modem should I install in order to fix this problem?
Thanks.
You can try the app Getril, from the play store. However I'm not quite sure what is meant by a custom modem. There is a thread here that has modems matched to RILs but as yet non have been made for 4.2.1. I looked there this morning. All I can suggest is try a fully clean installation or roll back to your previous rom.

By modem I mean that file which you choose when you install custom rom through download mode in odin's "modem" section.
I see, all the modems I've ever flashed were in zip format done via CMW. Sorry I can't be of further assistance.

Yup. On xda, you'll find that majority prefer the use of CWM recovery over odin since it doesn't increase the binary counter and is much easier. Simply download any modem for your device (which will be in a .zip format) and flash from recovery.
Remember that modems are not rom or android version specific. A gingerbread modem can be used with a jellybean rom.

Before the release of the leak (XXLSJ), many were on cm10 (4.1.2) with older modems/rils, usually those of ICS. It does work, but maybe its not so optimised to work on JB? I dunno, I'm not that much of a technical expert...

As per the first page of this thread, get a stock rom from Samfirmware & flash it with Odin (download mode); Guides. Or, if you search the General section (or do a Google search with XDA appended to your search terms; I do not have a link so don't ask) there is a thread in there somewhere with CWM flashable stock roms. But if you want to get the phone back to a similar state to when you bought it, do an Odin flash.
Nobody's going to regurgitate step by step instructions especially for you given it's been done thousands of times before in other threads. As a wise man on here says in his signature 'n00b OK, lazy n00b not OK'.

Dorimanx is an XDA dev who works on a i9100 kernel, named after himself. I absolutely love this kernel. It's stable, highly customisable and often updated. Search XDA for it and you shall find.

Fish finger (hahaha) all you want is to update to the latest Samsung official firmware right? If so, forget what kona said, you don't need a recovery at all. All you need to do is to flash a stock ROM via Odin, with your phone in download mode. Where to get the ROM? Search on Samfirmware.com for a stock ROM for your country, region & carrier. Then, to flash in Odin, you can click the link in my signature and find a handy link to a tutorial from there.
