I get that Kernels are moreso the inner workings, and a lot of ROMS have different kernels for whatever, but I'm wondering if you can juts flash differnet KERNELS to your phone without changing anything else to add funcitionality. I ask this because I am thinking of working on some WiFi cracking tools, but need a kernel that will support it. I noticed a lot of mention of changing to the wrong kernel f'ing your phone also, so is the kernel backed up with a NANDROID BACKUP or is that off in it's own partition, etc. or how does that work? I am thinking to put the CM kernel on my EVO 4G LTE.
You can change kernels but the base needs to match. GB with GB, JB with JB, AOSP with AOSP, SENSE 1.22 with SENSE 1.22, SENSE 2.13 with SENSE 2.13
My kernel shows as:
kernel
3.0.8-01360-g3fd0422
[email protected] #1
SMP PREEMPT
I know it's stock, so should be ICS I reckon. Can that be changed to he CM kernel or can I only use other ICS kernels, cause I read elsewhere people using CM kernels on evo 4g lte. or does that pend on the version of the phone you have?
You can't use just the cm kernel, it's AOSP it will only work with JB AOSP

I am still somewhat new to the Thunderbolt root, rom world. I now know current roms are radio specific and would like to know if the same goes for kernels? I am currently running LTS v1.7 and see kernels for Froyo based roms but does this mean all mr versions?
No, only froyo or gingerbread and sense or aosp
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium App
No, kernels are not radio specific.
There are two groups for kernels:
Froyo and Gingerbread
For each of those groups, there are two sub groups:
Sense based ROMs, and AOSP based ROMs
So if your running a froyo sense ROM, you'll need a froyo sense kernel.
Hope that helps.
That is mostly true. The newest base for builds of gingerbread don't play well with the current selection of custom kernels. You'll get goofy stuff like quirky WiFi or an upside down camera. Read the OP. The dev will usually tell you what kernel will work with what.
Hi, I have the htc evo 3d gsm model and i just flashed the latest LeeDroid Rom. I noticed that the battery life on this isn't that great and I started reading some posts about how others flashed a kernel and a rom. I dont know what that means but how do i go about doing it and what kernel/rom is the best for me to use?
a kernel, is the linux kernel for the device, the ground, on what the graphical interface from linux is build (in this case android).
A rom, can, but not must have a custom kernel, anyway, a custom rom changes many visual and many options to make the phone more usable and adds many apps and tweaks...
When I717UCLC5 ICS leak first became available, a few hours later several ROMs were developed based on that.
And I recall that initially the ROM included GB Kernel for a very specific reason - to enable easy reflashing of GB ROM if desired.
So I have two questions -
1. Why would the new kernel make it difficult to go back to GB ROM? I though ROMs generally come with a kernel, so in the event of reflash it would be replaced?
2. Now that we have UCLD3 leak I can see new ROMs coming up that include the new kernel without any sighted concern for backward compatibility. So is there any concern over flashing the new kernel (besides the reports of hard bricks that affected other leaked roms but don't appear to apply to our processor)?
Thanks.
I'm currently on:
Software: LeeDrOid_Flyer_HC_V2.0.0
ROM 3.55.405.1 CL205068 release-keys
Kernel 2.6.35.14-LeeDrOid-Flyer-HC-V2.1.0--g832a631
Boot S-OFF, Clockworkmod recovery 4.0.1.4
Thanks
Why don't you just take a look in Development and judge for yourself? There aren't that many. I think its just Dexter's ICS and JB, and a couple other ICS ROMs. The threads say what does/does not work, etc.
It also depends on what you consider "stable". All of them have some hardware issues. But whether that prevent you from using them as a daily driver, depends on your personal wants and needs. I think Dexter's are the furthest along, as he got the pen working.
Hi all,
I want to know if a rom always contains a new kernel and can you change the kernel without changing to another costum rom?
I'm sure most ROMs come with a kernel that is tweaked, at least a little. That doesn't necessarily mean it will support oc/uc. and yes you can flash a kernel, if compatible with you ROM, at your leisure.
there is no spoon.....
Almost all roms come with a kernel of some type, but I feel like I remember seeing a rom a few months ago that didn't come with any kernel, so you had to flash one right after you flashed the rom before booting up (that's what the dev said if I'm remembering right, I didn't flash the rom).
And yes, you can flash any kernel at any time as long as it is compatible with your device/rom.
Well... if the ROM doesn't contain a kernel (that's kind of common) your previous kernel is retained.
This applies specifically to stock-based ROMs
