i got samsung galaxy s 2 running on v2.3.3 and i want to update it to letest version...
my baseband version is 9100DDKE4. my question is Do i have to use only this baseband firmware file to update with odin or i can use any baseband firmware files on this forums for s2...
Just connect your phone with Kies and the update will automatically appear on Kies.
But before updating your phone keep backup of all your data just in case.

can you help me out...
You can upgrade using any firmware as long as its for your variant. ie. Don't flash a i9100G variant firmware on your i9100 international/ M/P/T and vice versa.
If kies isn't running, that's a good thing as it interferes with Odin. you'd need your phone drivers first though.
Try here for GB drivers for i9100

1. Suppose I live in Asia and my phone is running stock Android 2.3.4, and I want to upgrade it to 2.3.6, but EUROPEAN version (out of curiosity), not the one for my country. I need Odin, not Kies, to do that, correct? Since Kies will automatically download the one for my country?
2. Someone said there will be Samsung bloatware specifically for European countries if I install the European version. Can anyone give examples?
3. Continuing from number one(1), if I have successfully installed the stock European version using Odin, will this erase all my data (sms, contacts, apps, etc)?
4. If I'm in Asia and my phone is running stock European version 2.3.6, and want to go back to Asian 2.3.6, do I use Kies or Odin?
5. What's wrong with using firmware that is specifically for another country/carrier? Won't I be able to use my phone?
6. If I go to recovery mode, either stock recovery or cwm recovery, and "Wipe cache", what would happen? Will my sms, contacts, and apps be deleted?
Thanks guys!
1) Yes, you need ODIN to do that.
2) Yep, bloatwares like samsungmmm etc. But you can remove them by rooting and then unroot your phone.
3) No, all your data will be preserved.
4) Odin
5) There's no problem with using firmwares which are not operatpr specific. Operator specific firmwares might give problems if you did not buy your phone from an operator (But, you will need an operator specific firmware if your phone is operator specific)
6) IDK. But, there's no need to wipe cache after installing firmwares from Odin, if you are flashing on a stock ROM

One more thing, I recommend Stock 2.3.5 cuz its the most stable firmware till now. Many devs are saying that 2.3.5 is more stable than 2.3.6

6. Wiping cache will not delete your contacts or anything it will flush cache partition most probably...wiping data will remove all your stuffs
regarding number 1....

Samsung drivers? What's that? I have successfully went back to stock ROM (from custom ROM) using Odin. I'm not familiar with samsung drivers

He meant samsung drivers need to be installed on your computer so that ODIN can detect your phone. Since, you have successfully flashed back to stock ROM, thn it means samsung drivers were already installed.

when installing KIES and connecting ACE to windows, the driver should be automatically installed, isn't it?

Yup, but some people do not install kies cuz Kies is a memory hog >_<
It eats up all system resources.
So, drivers need to be installed manually incase kies is not installed on computer.

Hi folks, earlier today I tried flashing the latest ICS firmware using Mobile Odin and after it installed I can't get the phone booted up, I get the white startup logo then the screen goes black, tried pulling the battery, no joy.
I can get into that pointless ICS recovery but no CWM anymore. I can get into download mode but nothing will detect my phone, I've tried 2 laptops and 2 desktops but it's always coming up as unknown device.
If I go into the ICS recovery the phone is detected ok but I can't flash anything from it as it comes back with some verification error.
Is there anything I can flash from the ICS recovery to get me CWM back or am I able to flash a default firmware from it?
I'm guessing the problem is my cable (it's a generic Ebay job rather than the official one) but I the replacement won't be here for a few days and I'm in dire need of using the phone, which'll teach me in future to be more careful I guess
TIA.
I presume you have Kies installed on your PC ? If you do, uninstall it. Then re-download it. Then reboot. Then reinstall it. Then reboot again. Then see if your phone & PC can talk to each other & Odin recognise the phone.
If you don't have Kies installed, install it.
Also, when you're using Odin, make doubly sure Kies or any of it's processes aren't running (check Task Manager & kill them if they are running). Tho you need the drivers that come with Kies, you don't want it running when you're using Odin.
If those things don't work, wait for your cable given you've tried a couple of different PCs.
or u can just uninstall kies and install http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961956 instead... its driver pack without kies
works for me atleast
Try to put siyah kernel to your sd card and flash that, I think it is signed so you should be able to flash that in 3e

It's def. not a driver problem as I've tried it on machines that have never had Kies on them nor any samsung drivers, I've tried the samsung driver pack but that still won't detect anything other than "unknown device" in download mode.
@Makrilli does Siyah have CWM? If so I'll give that a whirl! Thanks
Of course

Tried a handful of Siyah kernels, none of them signed though, dawned on me then to just find a signed CWM recovery and flash that, all working fine now.
Thanks everyone for you help.

This is how i did it while running old ics. Place phone into download mode, launch kies and connect your phone. Kies will try to connect but won't (mine didn't anyway) don't even pay attention it trying to connect. Now go to tools and select "firmware upgrade and initialization" once you click that you'll now need tl input your phones serial and model numbers...you can get these by pulling the battery out, the numbers are behind the battery. You can pull the battery while its connected to pc via usb and your phone will not shut down, or you could just write them.down before hand. You must input all characters in upper case letters including the i on the model name. Once those are there go a head and click ok, you'll than have a few prompts afterwords...yes/no prompts, i believe i clicked yes on all of them. Than sit and wait, 5 minutes or so later you should be on official ics. If this fails make 100%sure the serial and model were put in right and do.a flash counter to safe.

download the latest FW and install using Odin, my kies is hit & miss at the best of times
Fixed. been too long since i had problems. Forgot to check the basics. had to update some drivers. My wife upgraded so now I have her Note to play with. I can not get odin to see the phone. The computer does though. I have been searching around awhile. IS there a way to ROOT without ODIN???
No , never heard about a way to change the binaries without odin

Try opening kies and click on tools - reinstall drivers.
Then try connecting with odin.
And I'm sorry but you MUST use a PC to root the i717.
