Hi,
Im kind of new to this, so i need some help. I have googled all this stuff but it still makes no sense.
So, im trying to root my galaxy s2. I've done everything according to instructions.
Im running on ICS 4.03 and my kernel version is
3.0.15-I9100XWLP7-CL340913
[email protected] #3
Baseband:
I9100XXLPS
I have downloaded the file CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_LP7-v5.4-CWM5.tar , as it is supposed to be the one I need to use with odin.
I have installed Kies and drivers for the phone.
I fire up download mode, and do everything correctly in Odin with the file stated above. Then when I try to use SuperOneClick and click root, the problems start;
First it says that automatic version detection failed, is my OS version newer than 2.0?
-> So i hit yes.
Then the next window pops, and states that my phone has already been rooted. do i still want to root anyway? i hit no, so it stops.
if i hit yes, it starts to root ite, which i have tried 3 times and the longest I tried it took 90 minutes, so i gave up.
Then i try to execute some commands with terminal or titanium backup, and nothing actually works. I see superuser and CWM in my apps though.
What am i doing wrong?
thanks in advance.
After flashing CF-Root there is no need to use SOC, because CF-Root is already rooted. :silly:

Ok, but when i try i.e. titaniumbackup it says that im not rooted?
and my kernel in the setting is the one that i stated.
Can i install a custom rom now or can i not?
Get SuperSU from Google Play, should help you.
If not, flash other kernel like Siyah/Dorimanx or whatever.

Ok, but can I install any rom for i9100 I want regardles of my kernel?
As long as its rooted... right?
Also, the SuperSu says that the SU binary needs to be updated when i open the application. Then it says update failed.
Goddamn i hate this when this happens to me.
Could you even point to me where to download these other kernel and are they safe to install on my device? i don't understand anymore
Yeah. Except certain latest ROMs that use the latest Mali drivers. Siyah doesn't support those yet. And the dorimanx kernel that supports those doesn't support the older JB and all ICS ROMs
Download siyah v4.1.5 from www.gokhanmoral.com
Use the tar version if your installing via Odin and the zip version if via CWM recovery.

OK,
So i installed siyah with odin. Superoneclick says still that i am rooted so i cant root.
In the phone nothing that should work (titanium, superSU,) is working.
So it is not really rooted.
What the F am i doing wrong guys?

I agree with Siyah, been using it since 2011 without issue
Try rooting using the method by rachmat3 thats in my sig.
Then flash the siyah kernel if you want.
Do it all through recovery/cwm if you want.

Do a nand backup and efs backup also before you muck things up.

Hi Guys, first time flashing and just successfully done so with SpeedMod kernel. Checked the kernel version and yup it's there.
One problem though, I tried installing Titanium Back up but it says my phone is not properly rooted. So I downloaded Root Checker and it says that my phone is indeed not properly rooted. What happened? I thought SpeedMod automatically installs root?
Hope (and Im sure) you guys can help me. Thanks in advance!

Installing speedmod kernal won't give you root access.. 1st you have to root your phone.. Search for it.. I will tell one method.. Flash an insecure kernel.. Then use 's2 root ' to root your phone.. There are many other methods..
Thank me if I helped

I see. I thought it was gonna give me root straight away. I posted a topic here about that and the one who replied told me to just flash SpeedMod straight away.
So what I have to do is flash an insecure kernel, then flash SpeedMod again?

Speedmod automatically roots your phone....
I expect superuser wasn't updated to the latest version,
Did titanium give an option such as 'yes, do it'?
If so, it's because your superuser app was not updated to latest version, check it on the android market.
I've flashed SpeedMod hundreds of times, it's never once failed to root.

I flashed it using Odin. Titanium didn;t give me that option either. I guess Ill just check the market for the latest Superuser then. Ill get back to you guys once I get back home, still here at work.
Thanks for the replies!
Ok so I downloaded the latest SU. Tried updating from within the app. So i got to the black screen with the green fonts, it says i run the legacy version. Then when it gets to the gaining root access.... Part, it always says fail. I tried dling the Su updater but all its says is ok.
Any help anyone?

My suggestion as you are going around in baffling circles .
....................................
Clean Slate for those that balls up the firmware .Or need to return to service or decide if its hardware/firmware problem .
Backup data first if phone is working .
Boot CWM recovery
Mounts and Storage
Format cache data system sd card .
Remove battery
Boot to download mode
Open Odin
Install correct stock firmware .
Start over with your custom rom root whatever .
Thanks for the tip Jjegan but I can't afford to lose all my apps in the process as I still can't use Titanium Backup. I've already updated to Superuser v3.0.7 but Root Checker still says I do not have proper root access.
I was browsing the OneClick Root thread and I saw someone there with the same problem (Superuser installed but can't use apps that require root access) but was not answered (I went from page 1-39). Spekaing of OneClick Root, would it work? It says it installs Superuser, su and Busybox.
I hope someone can help me with this.
**Also, would reflashing the stock kernel then flashing SpeedMod again solve the problem?
Might sound obvious but anyway: go into su, scroll over to the log and check that su hasn't been inadvertently blocked.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
No use. My log is empty plus I set the automatic response to Allow. Still nothing.
Should I just reflash the original kernel, clear all data then reflash Speedmod?
I'm running stock firmware btw.
I ran S2 Root and it says my device already has PERM ROOT. I'm getting confused...
Try fixing permissions, if that doesn't work try flashing a CF kernel or the original one. If all else fails you might have to bite the bullet and follow the advice above and start with a clean slate.

Ok I got it. XXKL1 can't get root access (I bought the phone from someone so I didn't know this before). I went ahead and flashed CheckRom v6 and everything worked! Superuser, root, etc.. everything! Good thing I kept on reading. Anyways, thanks for the replies guys!
Speedmod will make you lose root. Root again and flash a kernel like redpill or siyah.

A very simple question. I wanna root my S2 (UK Sim Free ICS). I don't wanna use CF-Root Kernel. I wanna root it the way I rooted it last time, i.e. using an insecure kernel by Odia. Odia has not published any working insecure kernel for ICS (I have tried using various some kernels for 4.0.3 and some for gingerbread, none of them worked... obviously). So, all I want is an insecure kernel so that I can root it using ADB. I don't mind making an insecure kernel myself, if someone can teach me how to. Hoping for a quick reply.
Cheers

I had the same version and couldnt find an insecure kernel. I went ahead with CF-Root and I had no problems. Why dont you want to use it?
Download Mode + Odin > PDA - CF-Root-SGS2_XW_XEN_LP7-v5.4-CWM5 > Ready to go!!!
Can I ask why?
Cf root adds root and it's own manager to the stock kernel. Nothing more.
I haven't tried it but I rooted one aosp non rooted ROM by using cwm and su zip. You can try it I'll post it when I get home

I did try CF-Root. I wanna keep my phone close to stock.. as much as possible. Plus I don't want CWM, so is there any way of rooting via CF-Root and then uninstalling CWM? I tried the ADB commands, but they don't work.
Easy fixed. Someone thinks they know what they're talking about (and is unable to use the search function or Google), yet they're expecting their hand held. Just another day on XDA.

This is not what I started the thread for. I know how to flash, flash using CF-Root and how to flash an original kernel afterwards.. This thread is about finding a solution to my problem, rather than suggesting me alternatives, which I already know. I believe in asking questions, when I don't know something and exploring all the possible options. All I am trying to say is: I have tried what's been done and I didn't like it, so I am looking for a better solution.

Let me tell you one last time, if you know this than you are wasting your time....
When you flash cfroot you get root and the cwm manager. When you flash stock kernel back you are now 100% stock.
Cwm manager app left is like any other app you use, you want to get rid of it use root uninstaller or root explorer and remove/delete the cwm manager apk.

Did you try the method described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719
I did it myself today and it works just fine - no kernel flash needed, and root is now accessible. The only issue I have is that AdAway didn't seem to be able to write to the hosts file. No matter, I've gone back to AdFree which works okay.

Flashing just the stock kernel will remove the yellow triangle (the one u see when u boot after installing an insecure kernel, like CF's) whilst keeping ur root.

ROOT = Yes...
CWM = NO NO!
I have tried removing it via many options, including ADB commands.. but nothing works. Have u personally tried removing CWM, if so then please share how you did that and that's all I want.

Finally, a proper answer.
Ya, I checked out the option this morning. But haven't tried it yet. I rooted my phone using CF-Root and I have an issue with ad away as well. Anyhow, I was suspecting that this option would give u a temp root, as in after a restart it would go away.. is that true? Also, did it increase your custom binary counter? and what about the yellow triangle?
No yellow triangle because the kernel is unchanged. I doubt the counter has altered either but I don't know how to check it (or what it said before ).
The root is permanent and survives restarts.

Oh.. thank God for u are gonna stop posting, as it is you have been of NO help.. Also, there is a difference between a stock kernel and a stock ROM. Flashing back with a stock aka original aka secure 'kernel' will just remove the yellow triangle, where as flashing with a stock ROM aka firmware, will remove everything.

Guys, is there any chance of rooting the phone without flash with odin or from the mobile odin?
Serve unlock root for ICS 4.0.3?
From already thank you very much.
PS: Sorry for my English is not very good
Look at the PhilZ-CWM6 custom kernel. It can be flashed in stock recovery and includes SuperSU, root, ClockworkMod Recovery and Busybox.
It is pure stock based, and doesn't have MMC brickbug.

There is ALWAYS a risk when doing anything to your device. The level of risk is down to what you are doing and what state the battery is in etc.
As long at the rooted kernel you are flashing is compatible with the current firmware then all SHOULD be fine.

Hi,
So, this is what happened
I have a galaxy SII gt-i9100, About 5 months ago I rooted it and installed the galaxy nexus update to android 4.0.4. and everything was ok except it wasn't showing me the option to transfer via blue tooth (but that didn't bother me much). These were the things I used

2. Odin3 v1.83
3. GT-I9100_XWKI8_insecure
4. GT-I9100_XWKI8_original
Now, yesterday I a friend had galaxy S II i9100P and he updated the firmware using kies and it had working blue tooth. I thought ok let's change it to that and my blue tooth might work also. I was at work and I (in a hurry) tried rooting it with only Odin. No backup, No Clockwork  nothing. ( and "Now it's stuck at the startup screen. I can go to download mode and recovery mode but it has samusg recovery not clockwork. I don't know what to do and in need of help. I'd really appreciate a quick response. (hoping to get atleast the mass data back )
These were the only 2 things used.

ok, the galaxy nexus update? you mean Jelly Bean or Supernexus / chamaleon?
I think that you've installed a stock ROM over a custom ROM and that's why you are stucked at the logo.
read a little bit about flashing because you are up for it.
Learn about SD card data when flashing and follow a tutorial to flash stock ICS 4.0.3 via odin thru Download mode.
Also make sure to flash a safe kernel so you wont get the brick bug (see warning post sticked in the general section).
I don't know what to put here...any ideas?

I just updated my S3 to Jellybean (flashed stock Optus 4.1.2 rom from Samfirmware with Odin). I know it's normal for root access to be disabled when new firmware is installed, the problem is, I can't seem to re-root it. I flashed Cf-root with Odin but I still don't have root access, it didn't take for some reason. Any idea what's causing this? I'm using Siyah Kernel if that's relevant.

Thank for the quick reply. Optus is the name of my carrier. I just flashed CF-Root v6.4 two more times and it's still not working.

siyah already includes root.
CF-Root is another (stock-ish) kernel so you kick Siyah out with it.
Flash Siyah, go in stweaks fully to the right and press the "root" button, it will try to re-root on next boot

Thanks for the info, I actually thought that was the case at first which is why I installed Siyah before cf-root. The things is, After flashing Siyah, I didn't have root access and I couldn't open Stweaks because of that (I got the message 'no root access or timeout') which is why I was trying to flash cf-root. Maybe Siyah didn't flash properly because Stweaks wasn't installed, I had to download it from the market. It sounds like you're saying I have to change something with Stweaks in order to get root access after flashing Siyah (I don't remember having to do that last time), how can this be the case if I need to be rooted to use Stweaks at all? I'll try flashing Siayh again anyway and see what happens.
I just flashed Siyah (v1.8.9) again and I still don't have root access and I still can't open Stweaks ("No root access, or timeout!"). I'm pretty sure Siyah installed properly because it shows up in the 'about device' settings.
EDIT: Just tried flashing an older version of Siyah (v1.8.6), still no root.

Thanks for replying. Is there anything in particular that I need to do in recovery? Or do I just need to boot into recovery, reboot and reflash. Also, can I do this with Siyah instead of CF-Root? Because I'm able to boot into CWM with Siyah already and I thought we established that I don't need CF-Root....
When I try to root It was like your problem and when I jump to recovery(stock) I saw some red posts and It reboot automaticly. Then I reflashed CF it was succesfull.

I had the same problem after updating to JB. I rerooted using CF Auto root. I'm with virgin mobile

I'm trying to root and put CM10.1 on my device, but the methods I see involve having ICS or Kies. Kies is not working on my computer, it doesnt launch for some reason. How can I either update to ICS or root 2.3.6 which is on the device now with out it? What's the best way to get CM10.1, please help! All the methods are kind of old...
The methods are old much like the version you are on.
Why would installing a custom ROM need kies? It doesn't. You need Odin or heimdall to flash custom kernel with recovery and then you can flash whatever ROM you want.

What Pirateghost said. Just flash CWM (clockworkmod recovery) through Odin (google or xda search it). From there the rest will be piece of cake.
Or you could just download "drama root". It's an apk file that you install on your phone, run it, and it riots it within a few seconds and installs Super User. It's quick and easy. Next all you need to do is install a custom recovery via Mobile Odin. You didn't even need to touch a PC to root your phone.

I think you must mean "Framaroot"

Yeah it was auto correct LOL. I was in a rush also and didn't realize it corrected to "drama"
