Hello, Everyone.
My name is x, and I'm a Google Voice Search app addict. =)
There's a huge difference in the Voice Search apps across
the two different versions of Android.
I use Google Voice Search for EVERYTHING. I ride a Ninja everywhere,
add it's my only vehicle. I sometimes send text messages at a red
light, pull over and "call" a business or friend quickly, tell my Droid
"navigate to" my destination, and etc. it's EXTREMELY useful.
I can't live without it.
In Gingerbread, the texting feature was getting better and better.
For example: if Google didn't understand a particular word, then
it would be highlighted. You could then select the word and be
given a few different options, and Google would thus learn from
you. However, in ICS... The highlighted option no longer appears.
Also, this would come in handy when you had multiple contacts
with the same or similar names. Even if the name wasn't highlighted
in the To field, then you could still tap the the contact name in the To
field and select another suggested name. Another useful thing by
tapping a word or contact name: it would highlight the entire contact.
Now.. In ICS, tapping the contact doesn't give you any options.
This all in turn ends up with me having to type more in the Voice Search
texting window for typos, when it can't understand a particular word, or
if it just puts the wrong person in the To field. It practically defeats the
purpose of Voice To Text.
Is anyone else having similar experience?
Is it possible to install a working version of Voice Search from Gingerbread
onto ICS?

I agree! I think Google Now is a step forward but would have been much better if it incorporated what Voice Search already had like the highlighted text feature. Also, it seems Google Now defaults to a player without even asking. Not sure what the best course of action to take here is. One thing I did was removed the flashy YouTube app from Jellybean because it has ads in it and put the one I had in Gingerbread (YouTube HD 2.4.4) IIRC
Personally I've never used regularly the ics voice search. I got into voice search when Google Now appeared. What I recall from the gingerbread voice search is that It could hardly understand common speech, which is a thing ICS does great, and Google Now does amazing.
However to answer your question, I think having the gingerbread voice search app in ics would be really hard. As the jump from gb to ics was enormous, and from ics to jb where mostly framework changes; compiling the gb voice search for ics would be hard.
I recommend you to find a replacement for the voice search in the play store, that mimics the one of gb. Or as I do, have the ICS voice search and Google Now installed at the same time.
ICS search is not as accurate, but it is good for searching an app, song, etc.
I find Google Now really great to dictation purposes, and Siri like questions like: "Do I need an umbrella for this week?" or "Who is the president of Russia", but it most of the times doesn't display the App that I typed for, or the song.

I ended up succumbing to Google Now. Don't get me wrong; I still miss the Voice Search app. I am now starting to miss the fact that Voice Search app would basically appear above/on-top-of any app that you were currently using if you long-pressed the Search key. This was definitely handy if you were doing something and wanted to do a quick search, get directions, or send a text message while not really interrupting your current task.
I think I might be on one of the last Android devices that actually has the Search button. I believe most newer Androids only have three keys at the bottom: home, back, and menu. Removing the Search key and making the Google Search Bar permanently on your homescreen is just horrible in my opinion.
I love Google Now for every feature, but they took away a nice bit from Voice Search.

Hi, first time poster long time win-mobile user.
Has anyone else noticed the voice to text feature is unavailable in the 2.1 leak? I wonder if it's there but not accessible using the Eris's keyboard.

I think you have to install it via the marketplace. At least I think that what it asked me to do.
You can use voice search but voice does not seem available anywhere else. A few things are missing so this is obviously not a complete 2.1 but it might be all they are giving us for the Eris.

I installed "Better Keyboard" on my wife's Eris with 2.1 and it did provide speech-to-text function...sort of. The speech to text worked pretty well, but I couldn't get the auto-punctuate to work even though I had it enabled in settings. If you said "period" or "question mark", it typed them out. I tried contacting the developer for troubleshooting help, but he doesn't reply in a very timely manner and I didn't want to miss the window of opportunity for uninstall and refund, so I just did that. I've heard "Smart keyboard" is better than "better", but haven't tried it for myself yet. But speech to text is definitely not on-board without a 3rd party app.

I just switched from Tmobile (MyTouch 3G Slide) to the Verizon Thunderbolt.
I REALLY REALLY miss the Hand-Free (Texting) ability from the MyTouch...
Is there anyways to get the Hand-Free ported from the MyTouch to the Thunderbolt?
(I tried Vingo, I don't like its. And it didn't seem to Read Incoming SMS)

Its not just the lack of HandsFree Texting on the Thunderbolt.. Its the Call Announcing through Bluetooth, and other features within the HandFree app on the myTouch...
I don't want a Third-Party Messaging app, when the one within Android works just fine.

Well Maybe you should be laughing at yourself for being douchie, because the HANDS-FREE Feature from the MyTouch is not built into the SMS App. Its a whole different app. If I'm not mistaken its apart of the Genius Button; Because its Activated by pressing the G-Button>Menu>Hand-Free

The feature you wanted was specifically built/integrated for the phone in question (through proprietary means) and was not built by HTC. That is why it's not in every HTC phone and why you won't have it on the Thunderbolt without additional software you claim you can't stand.
"Genius" is a custom voice command and text-to-speech system powered by Dragon Dictation technologies. The button replaces, and is in the location of, the Search button previously on the myTouch 3G.

Properly built third party software is as good as anything that comes on the phone or better and has the same means/access to build their apps as the OEM.
I've been using Voice Control Full and I think you might like it. Check it out from your Android phone:

Yeah, I mean I don't understand what the OP wants and thus is a pretty useless thread. He knows our phone lacks a certain feature that he seems pretty passionate about having, but yet says the SMS on the phone works fine and does not want a third party alternative (despite the feature on his old phone technically being a third party feature, just one that came with it and porting it would be the same as installing something in the market).
I would recommend using a keyboard that has voice control in it like swype (and there's some others), but I wouldn't to look too "douchie" by recommending third party apps to the OP.

I don't want a second SMS Application such as Handset. I never asked for that.
I ASKED FOR the TEXT TO SPEECH application that is built into the MyTouch 3G Slide.
the HandsFree app from the MyTouch 3G support Voice Texting, Voice Calling, etc. When a new SMS Message arrive, the phone Announces the sender, and asked if I would like to read no, or later. Then after the application reads the TEXT, it give the option to REPLY, which can then be done through voice... So Never do you have to touch the phone while driving.
The appication from the MyTouch that handles all that has been the best HandFree application I've seen yet. And I've had nothing but Android phones since the Original G1.
I asked for that one application, because I figured with all the smart people on this site, they might have been able to extract it from the MyTouch at some point. The CM7 for the MyTouch has it. I've tried to look within the zip for the application (apk) that might be responsible for the HANDFREE app, but have yet to locate it.
So in the end, If I wanted to try one of the 30000000000 other SMS/Text Apps out there I would have asked for it. And technically I orginally never asked for a SMS Application. I asked for a HandFree (Speak-to-text, and vis versa)
Well here's my stab at it. Voice Control is proprietary software by Nuance (Dragon Dictation Technologies) meaning even if we did find the apk or were able to port it, it would be considered warez which is against the rules of XDA. All apps by Nuance are paid apps.

Nuance and T-Mobile had an exclusive agreement to implement this software on the myTouch 3G/4G. I'm sure later on other devices will be supported. The only download they have for Android is the flexT9 keyboard for $4.99 . They seem to have all their apps available to the iPhone however.
However when I asked about alternatives, someone recommended Vlingo Virtual Assistant for reading SMS in the Android Market. Not sure if it has the same exact features as Voice Control, however its a close alternative.
EDIT: nevermind noticed you said you tried Vlingo. My bad
Edit 2: I know you said you did not want alternatives but Drivesafe.ly can read txts to you and the pro version let's you respond. I really don't think there are free alternatives for a fully featured app other than Vlingo.

Actually Vlingo does read incoming text messages. The feature is Safe Reader. Also has voice dialing and texting.
Oh and p.s. no need to be a **** to people offering assistance.

Hi guys.
My Motorola Milestone had a call button beside each contact on the stock Contacts app. The Xperia neo doesn't have such a thing (if I click on a contact, it takes me to a contact page where I must then click on the phone number to start the call).
I thought that button was standard on the Android Contacts app. Perhaps not. Anyway, is there a way I can have button like that on the neo? Perhaps installing an app or something...
You are correct, direct phone button is there when you are in Android default rom (like those in CM rom).
In my opinion, Sony make it much more beautiful, and convenient in integrate with facebook, twitter etc, but sucks in its original function - dial - and don't have T9 search which already found in many old phones, some will say there is a search there, but it can only search by name.
But still, you can install thirty party app, GO dialer, dialpad, etc, just search in Market.

All contacts app substitutes from the Market are flawed in something, and even the best are badly translated to portuguese.
Because it's so simple but useful I'd suppose someone had already added this functionality (call buttons on the contacts) on the regular app using... umm... maybe another app. I don't know, I'm just a user with a problem really, like most people.
clik on the contacts photo, a pop-up will come with call and text button.
Yes I noticed this problem with the Pro too, not intuitive at all, when I first tried to call someone I was stuck looking at their contact details with no way to know how to call someone, dam stupid! -1 for Sony for that!
i figured it out accidently on my Neo V.tap the caller image(even if it is not assigned) and you will find your solution.hope it works on Neo as well

Yeah it does, just tried it on my original Neo.
i have a annoying friend with a iphone, and keeps showing off it's SIRI app and every time he's done telling it something, and it replies, he tell's " does you android do that?" then i tell him no, then he says "i didn't think so", so please help me find the best voice app, either just like SIRI or better, today i will say "yeash, h*ll yeah, my android does that, and better", so please help
gs2 have voice recognition built in, just press the home button twice. If you want someone to talk to get iris from the market.
Well, you do have the inbuildt voice thing when you doubble press the home button, or you can download iris from Play store

The closest one to Siri (in looks) is "andy".
but choose Iris or Siri or Skyvi for best functionality.

I've been using Google Voice Search since day on my original Droid with slide out keyboard, but today it's no longer voice-to-text'ing my punctuations. It's actually spelling out each punctuation into words, and this extremely annoying considering how dependent I have become with Google Voice Search's Voice Actions.
I sell phones and demonstrate, always driving around to different locations, always have hands tied... Please help me figure out why it's all of a sudden not punctuating..!
I'm rooted on stock. Voice Search has been cleared, force stopped, installed updates, reinstalled updates.
Swype's keyboard microphone does punctuations and smiley faces perfect.
Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated.

I just did a Google search for my issue, and I found my own thread just after one day of posting. It's the first result, too. That's sweet.
I'm extremely glad it's not just me! It happened to me just a couple of days ago, too. I was out of town on business, so I couldn't trouble shoot on other Androids. I'm at my girl's house now. I picked up her Droid Incredible 2 while posting this, and I held down the search button:
Send Text to NAME smiley face
It spelled out smiley face instead of making one. This appears to be Google. I'll be checking on other Android devices tomorrow. I'm very glad it's not my Razr.

It is definitely google, sorry if I'm posting in the wrong forum but I'm on rooted HTC Evo 4g and just noticed the other day, when I use voice search it will spell out my punctuation. Example "Hello comma are you going to the party tonight question mark" rather than "Hello, are you going to the party tonight?" as it did before.
Ironically enough, it only does this when I actually use the voice search comment and say "Send text to" etc.
If I already open up a text and press the little microphone it will still dictate punctuation.

Same problem here. It just started happening to me a couple days ago and extremely annoying. I can't believe how dependent I am on voice search - I use it all the time. I tried deleting and reinstalling voice search, as well as changing the settings for google services voice recognition, but neither had any affect.
What's really strange is that the voice to punctuation works in other apps like texting or email apps, which also use voice search for the speech to text conversion. It just doesn't work from the "voice search" application.

I have been tweaking without my Google Voice Search texting. It makes the "Send Text To:" command utterly useless.

Same problem here... I thought it was because I moved it into the system directory. Moved it out, and still same problem. Now that I see I'm not the only one, I'm moving it back...
Can anyone suggest an alternative for e-mailing? I tried Vlingo, which handles punctuation correctly, but doesn't do as good of a job looking up contacts.
I thought it was because I switched from my HTC Vivid to my Galaxy Note... I guess it is not just that Samsung sucks.. lol ... I hope this issue gets resolved sooner than later..

I flashed an ICS ROM to my EVO3D and still have the same issue. Plus there's no mic icon in the pop-up text window.
Add one more to the list ... HTC Sensation running ARHD 6.6.3. Surely this isn't a new "feature" from Google ....

The Google Now Voice to Text feature for "Send Text" is working again, but it now has a new issue. Punctuation and Smiley Faces are not recognized at the end of the last sentence of Google Now/Voice Search's "Text" Voice Command.
For example:
" text Bonnie i miss you exclamation point smile face "
Normally yields a text to Bonnie:
" I miss you! "
However, it now does this text:
" i miss you "
It actually continues to type the correct punctuation and smileys while dictating in the Search bar, but it does not carry them over to the text message. Anything at the end of a sentence is now completely lost. Vanishes. And annoying.
Prior to recently, it would not carry over punctuation at the end of sentences; but it would work fine if I added a smiley face to the end of my texts. So.. For a while, a vast majority of my texts to people ended with a smiley face. LoL. Just to get the question mark or exclamation point to show up correctly at the end of my texts. However, my smiley face band aid does not work anymore.
Anyone having similar issues?
