Excessive battery drain ! - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hey guys
I am having a lot of problem with custom ROMs. please help.
Every custom ROM i install, after the very first charge cycle the ROM lasts extremely good for one full day with my complete usage as well. but as soon as the second charge cycle is finished it doesn't even last 4 hours whether i use or not.
I install only the regular apps and hardly 5-6 of them.
please post your valuable advises and suggestions.
would help
thank you

You need to recalibrate your battery dude.
Let your battery die.
Then with your phone off charge to 100%.
Then remove battery for 5 minutes to reset fuel gauge chip.
Replace battery, turn on phone and enjoy

still the same problem
but when on stock ROM, the battery runs all good.

That's because battery 'recalibration' (at least these batteries) is voodoo nonsense
It sounds like a process(es) is causing wakelocks which is causing excessive drain when the phone is idling (from what you've described).
Get BetterBatteryStats from Google Play, then read the BBS thread on here (search for it; if you can't find it, you can access it from within the app from memory). That should give you some clues to help you track down what's causing the drain. If you're still stuck, you should be able to post stats/screenshots to the BBS thread & I'm sure people who post there regularly should be able to help you.

I disagree with your statement about battery calibration being nonsense.
Do some research into the battery gauge chip in the S2 dude, resetting it definitely works
You're right though it could definitely be wake locks too
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app

I used to have a similar behavior. I bought BBS and found that viber was having many wakes, uninstalled it and things were better. Google services sometimes also drains battery, deactivate wifi and data and verify if battery drain continues.

Maybe you are right. ill look into it

You can try GSam Battery Monitor:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5nc2FtbGFicy5iYm0iXQ..
It is easier to find an application that consumes juice in GSam BM than in BBS. BBS is very good but more difficult. I think your problem is beeing made by bad application that sucks energy.
You can also try CPU Spy to get known if your device goes into deep sleep mode.

Try turning of location services. It will help but there must be something else too. Did you try CPU spy which shows how much time your phone is in deep sleep when not in use?

Battery Problem... Please Help!

Hey guys,
I just rooted my GS2 and am loving it, except for one thing that has seemed to change... battery life.
It is really draining badly with very light usage. For example, it went from 100 to 70 in about 7 hours, and I was only actually using it for maybe 45 minutes in total - the rest was in sleep mode.
Should I use the "Battery Calibration" app from the Market? Will it really help?
Also, my battery stats seem to report the phone as "Awake" and "Screen On" a lot of the time, even when I'm not using it...
What should I do?
I'll post a couple pictures of my battery stats tomorrow so you can better understand what I'm talking about...
Sent from my GT-I9100M using XDA Premium App
100-70 in 7 hours I would say its really good battery considering mine
you can try by finding out the services running in the backgound
You can also try using Juice defender (from market). have this for 2-3 days then check

I use battery calibration everytime I flash a new Rom in order to clean battery stats and fake information from the previous Rom...I'm sure it helps...than maybe you can try Betterbatterystat from the market (I think there is also a thread somewhere in xda forum) to se if you have wakelocks that drains your battery even when on sleepmode...

I noticed that my phone does that when I am in a weak service area. The radios use a lot of juice trying to get/keep a signal. You could try Better Battery Stats or Bad Ass Battery Monitor to see in more detail what is using your battery.

you can also try to calibrate your battery with serval apps! type in play store : battery calibration ! they all do the same job and preaty good i must say..
i recommend you to try : Battery Calibration free . thats for rooted users and does great job!
Alright Thanks
I sorta realised it was due to my connection as my school has a really bad reception and thats where teh majority ofteh drain occurred will download that app
My personal experience!!!!! Flame me not!!!!!!
Ok here goes:
I don't use any battery calibration apps or system tuner or task killer any more. I test my battery like I test my gas mileage: ALL THE FRIGGIN' TIME!
I've found I get better battery life without these extra apps. However, I also completely strip all ROM's I use of completely unnecessary apps and their respective widgets (HTC News, HTC News and Weather, Jetset Printer, Stocks, Twitter, Picasa, Google +, etc.)
Now, the only app I would recommend and have heard from multiple sources and threads is Better Battery Stats. It has a nominal fee, however, is worth it. I will show you what is draining your battery.
You could also have wake lock problems. Who knows? Get some diagnostic info to post to better help those trying to help you. Help me, to help you! LOL!

Flame on! Just kidding. I also have never calibrated my battery as it is useless according to the Android engineers at Google.
The reason I also recommend Bad Ass Battery Monitor is because it is a little more user friendly.
Also, there is an xda version of Better Battery Stats that is available in these forums for free, although the Market version is cheap and supports the dev.

i have some problem, when my screen active, i put it to my pocket, then my body touch the screen and do random process abaout 45minutes.. done with 40% battery gone x_X.. i think u must tell us how long u use app
You can use battery calibration. you can find it in the android market
Have you tried reset battery stats then full charge, use it for a couple of minutes then full charge again? Don't know why it works but I have used this method on a couple of Roms and it seems to help
try clearing your battery stats full charge ur battery n then let it discharge fully then full charge once more n recalibrate it..should work
The main factor for preventing battery drains is to have a good modem that doesn't overheats the phone, using a ROM with deep sleep and a battery friendly kennel like Siyah or Fluxxi. Try to get those three things fixed and you should not have any more battery drains
Turn auto brightness off also make sure none of your apps are using your GPS all the time. I think the problem may be app related I would roll to a stock kernel and only use apps that are must need and see if that helps. Also your battery could be shot . How old is it ?

Random power downs when not using. (CM9 ICS nightly)

I am getting some strange battery behaviour.
My device will turn itself fully off when sleeping about once a day. The power use graph often has strange jumps in it as well.
I've tried resetting battery stats but it's not made a difference.
Any ideas what could be causing it or how to fix it?
I've been having the same issue for the past few days. I've also been having a good amount of crashes. I am thinking about starting completely over: Odin back to 3.2, reinstalling CWM, and then trying the nightlies again. If that doesn't make it more stable, I may try Task 14 (HC).

Well first, I would not recommend Juice Defender. I have heard that it causes the batter to drain more.
Secondly, the stats are only for not even 3 hrs. If you want a proper reading of what is draining battery it needs to be longer, if possible.
EDIT: What rom/kernel are you running? And did you do a full wipe when you flashed them?

I need an app that turns the wi-fi off when i'm not using it as I find wi-fi being creates a big battery drain. JuiceDefender has served me well for that purpose for years. Any other apps you can recommend for automatically turning off the connections?

I was running CyanogenMod 9 Nightlies Galaxy Tab 10.1 WIFI, then after a week switched to [ICS]Ganbarou GT-P7500/7501/7510/7511 CM9, and I am now as of yesterday on [JB][AOSP][ALPHA] Android 4.1.1 - Jelly Bean - [GT-P7510], full wipe as usual for them all, bar JellyBean where I had to return to stock first.
I've had the same power problem on them all, but i've noticed i've managed a 10hr stretch on JellyBean, so stats are attached.
Problem fixed.
I installed the Jelly Bean alpha, but it was still happening, so I drained the battery completely, then charged it fully, and that fixed the problem.

Low Battery life

any one can help me solve this ??
i cant charge my phone 3 times a day!!

Go to my Battery Guide stickied in the Q&A section and see if any of those tips apply. In the 3rd post, there are apps that will help determine what is draining your battery.
Download Betterbatterystats from the 3rd post and run it. Post a screen shot of Partial Wakelocks/Since Unplugged and we'll see what is draining your battery and move on from there.

first of all thanks for your quick help!
now i did take a pic of the screen and i will do the battery calibration app, but after the instillation of the ROM i did go to the CWR and did wipe battery status but it did noting.
thanks again for your help
Can you give a screen shot like the above but with a little more time on it than 4 minutes? Maybe with a few hours on it. That way we can see a little more info. All that is on that screenshot is the modem initializing and your media scanner.
Also when you wiped Battstat in CWR, that was the same thing as the Battery Calibration app is doing. Just the app is easier in that you don't have to boot into recovery to wipe them.
Do the battery calibration when your phone is charged to 100%. A buddy of mine was having awful battery life, turned out he wiped his battery stats when it was only half charged and then it seemed to charge only half way.
Charged it to 100%, then calibrated and viola.

Perfect. You must have either your GPS or Network Location on all the time. That is what is killing your battery. Do you use Maps/ Navagation a lot? How about apps that track your location like Foursquare/Twitter/G+ or FB (even apps like Angry Birds do this crap). Find the app that is broadcasting and you'll find the leak.
I have the MLB At-Bat app on both my phone and my tablet and on my tablet, I allow it to use my location so I can watch the games. It is a wifi only tablet and I have the wifi policy to cut off when tablet is in stand-by mode. On my phone however, I manually turn it on/off when I want to watch a game, so it never interferes with deepsleep and not broadcasting my location using GPS and battery at the same time. See where I am going with this?
I am betting that you don't get into deepsleep much because of the wakelocks interupting the sequence. Install CPUspy and let it runs for a few hours. After a bit, open it up and I would venture to say that your DS will be minimal.
Let's solve your battery drain first and then we can put on our tin-foil-hats and I'll show you some apps that are tracking you.

i don't use at all the GPS or maps or navigation , i canceled all the location services in the settings !
i have no idea how to Find the app that is broadcasting?
i uninstalled a lot of apps after what you wroth me but still no change
i have a felling that all of this is happening because of the devil3 kernel, just after i installed it the battery went low!
Do you have the devil configuration app?
If so, what are your settings?
I run the devil kernel on both of my devices and I average about 28hrs battery life with moderate to heavy use.

Now that is frickin' comedy! On a serious note though, it does get frustrating chasing these things around. After I flash and get everything setup I make a nandroid.. Then when it happens I skip all the trying to find the culprit business and reflash and restore from scratch. I would rather have the hassle than be annoyed lol.

Battery drains quickly for no reason

Hi, my phone drains within 10 hours on standby. It drains while off as well. It has NOTHING to do with my ROM or kernel because I've used multiple and nothing with my apps or wakelock. I bought a new battery with a bigger capacity but it didn't help. It seems absolutely random and I think the hardware is not working correctly. Any help?

Hi. There could be numerous reasons for this battery drain. Firstly, I would recommend attempting to narrow down the problem somewhat by using many of the available apps that come to mind. Try wakelock detector, better battery stats and cpu spy.
It could also perhaps be the radio of your phone. You could also try switching to 2G only or turning GPS or bluetooth off and see if that helps.
All battery related problems take a bit of patience.
