Hi everyone,
I recently dropped my Galaxy S3 and the Gorilla glas cracked. So I made a nandroid backup before sending it in to Samsung contractor to get it fixed. After I got it back (they couldn't replace the gorilla glas, they needed to replace the complete display) I tried to restore my nandroid backup. Everything seemed fine, reboot, then another reboot and I was back in recovery.
I then flashed back stock firmware (which caused some trouble so kies could update the phone but ended up fine). I then tried to use Titanium Backup Pro, Nandroid Explorer and AppExtractor 2.0 to get back my SMS and WhatsApp history but it failed.
Then I took a look at data.ext4.dup and it seemed to me as an index for what to restore from the blobs folder. So I searched for the mmssms.db file, found the entry and opened up the file in notepad++. It was an html file which seemed to me to be something from the Chrome cache. Next I used notepad++ to search over the whole blobs folder for some string from some SMS which I found in a file, that was supposed to be of the Chrome cache.
My conclusion is, that my data.ext4.dup file is mixed (messed) up. Was there a bug in CWM Touch Recovery and is there a way to fix this so I can restore my nandroid backup or at least get back my SMS and WhatsApp history? And is there a program to export / import / merge WhatsApp history?

this is why i never use the new CWM, I hate the Blobs way... if i wanna save my backup to my pc forget it SO many files to transfer takes forever. I am a fan of cwm chainfire which is 6 files. and its a complete CLONEDroid and app extractor works perfect with it

Seasoned user here, def no noob. New to SGSII though. Anyway...here is my info.
I cannot no matter what I try get my phone to restore my Mms .db file, via recovery (I have tried, recovery, titanium, placing the files and setting the permissions manually).
If I delete the existing .db file and paste my Mms .db file there and it shows up in the data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/mmssms.db
permissions
x x
x x
and then reboot
Go back and the old file is back there? Seriously WTF I want to smash this thing!
Someone assist me please?
Going to reply to my own thread with a solution in case anyone else has the same dramas? I kinda needed to do this because i got a chicks number the other day and she was hell cute and she had text me and I had saved her number but had not sync'ed my phone so the only way to get it back was from her SMS that was in the phone that someone had stolen. However I had the nandroid backup from the evening after i met this chick.
All previous hopes via recovery and titanium were fruitless
Anyway, I couldn't do a nandroid restore because it was saying that my device was not an MTD device....naturally its SGSII, and its not CM9 based firmware I have flashed either. So what I did was break the clockwork recovery backup down and pulled the data ext4 tar file out and re-hashed it (MD5sum)
I saw pulled an existing ICS nandroid backup form my SGSII fresh.
I exchanged the data tar and added the new hash value into the nandroid.md5 file and repackaged it.
It passed the check and installed the data but far out out it screwed my phone. android.process.android.acore was going nuts, I doubt there was even an app left that didn't force close.
I then did a titanium backup of the complete re-install with the Mms restored (although I wasn't certain because I couldn't open the messaging app at all! - nor could i get into settings to clear data cache without a bazillion force closes) I did this on total hope that it would work.
I then nandroid backuped my phone again just incase even though the data partition had a see of bugs in it. I then wiped the phone reflashed back to stock and then installed titanium and then restored just the SMS and couple of other things while i was at it! Bam perfect! All texts 100% restored including the drafts as if it was my old phone last I saw of it that is
I am still getting the odd few android.acore FCs but I know its a data cache related issue (I had this a while ago)....but no application FCs what so ever.
I hope this information helps someone out

Hello,
I was using WildChild custom rom for my WildfireS and created a SMS backup before flashing and moving to m1ndh4x8 ROM. In this ROM there is no backup/restore function though.
-How do I restore my messages? Can I upgrade the stock message app? Or is there any B&R app that can read the backup file? so far I tried many but non of them worked.
Thanks for your help.

Whats the file format of the backup u did is it a *.csv or a *.xml?
the file saved by the stock app doesn't have any extension. I tried to import it in excel but I can see only strange characters. I also tried to rename as *.xml and start the restore with SMS Backup and Restore but it says "Failed:Null".
Thanks for your interest.

My stock sms does not contain resotring and backuping messages so i dont know if u want to be on the safe side the next time use super backup from the market
its backing up all ur sms contacs and the call log each one in a single file so u can easily restore
thanks, I restore the message in a very long way
1- i did a backup with CWM of the actual rom
2- I flashed the phone with the previous rom
3- I restored the sms backup with the stock messages app.
4- I made anotehr backup with SMSBackupandrestore
5- I restored the new ROM with the CWM backup
6- installed SMSB&R and imported my texts! Yeah..
Next time i will use directly third part software to do backup.

Hi,
Just wondering if there is a solution for me here. I did a CWM backup before soft-bricking phone and now all is up and running again. I still have the clockworkmod folder on sdcard but no boot.img etc. I notice Titanium Backup is the paid version which offers the options mentioned here. Is there any chance of locating and recovering my sms from this cwm backup folder? TIA
I have a similar problem.
I have used stock message app for backup and tried to restore my messages after a factory reset of my HTC Sensation (stock rom). Backup file is 3MB big and I guess that is the "reason" why it keeps reporting that it is "Unable to restore messages".
The backup file is located on SD in the apropriate folder.
I tried with some old 768KB file and succeded. Sent 1 sms and did the new backup to be sure that folder is asociated with the app - everything is ok. Even though I have restored that 1 sms in order to test the restore function and the path to backup files. Everything works just fine.
Conclusion: The backup file I need is too big.
How to solve this issue?
Perhaps I could shrink it somehow or use another app to read the file? Any idea?
edit: I forgot to tell. Those messages are veeery important to me (business, love, contacts, etc...) so I'll try anything I can to restore them.
I guess I always ask some too dificult or stupid questions or am not being loved arround here
Sensation won't restore

Hi Pezilla
Did you resolve this issue? I did a factory reset of my HTC Sensation and have the exact same problem. File size is 2.3Mb. No problem restoring smaller files. I can't think how to reduce the size of the file because I don't know how to read it!!

Hi, I have a similar problem. I have an SMS backup file from my HTC Wildfire S. This backup file was created on the SD Card by my unrooted and unmodified phone. I then rooted the phone, and now run WildChild on it. I cannot restore my old SMS from the original backup file.
As mentioned above, I have a file with no extension.
How can I restore my SMS messages? What apps do I need and where will I get them. (Total Noob!!).
Thanks

I searched that issue very much, so sorry but no other application reads that stock sms backup You have to flash stock rom first, after that you can restore your sms.
So this is what happened.
I backed up all my apps using Go Backup, so there's now about 500MB worth of files all waiting to be restored. The reason I did the backup was that I was to flash a new ROM, which I did.
However, upon reinstalling Go Backup, I found that it doesn't recognize my backed up files anymore compared to the previous days I used it. Researching about the issue I soon realized that the problem is encountered my numerous people, all of whom losing their files because of Go Backup's inability to recognize files from their last update.
I tried installing Pro and the previous versions, but it wasn't successful.
Yes, I can install the apk files one by one, but that would be quite a hassle whenever I'd flash a new ROM. Anyone can help us on this one?
Thank you so much.
EDIT: So I tried reinstalling each apk with their corresponding tar files. Turns out there are some that can't be installed, the games. Agent Dash and Subway Surfr apks, for instance, would give me the message: there was a problem parsing the package. I guess I need Go Backup after all.

I've faced this before and i lost a lot of data because of Go backup. I was forced to move to a much better alternative such as MyBackup Pro or if you're rooted then you can use Titanium Backup no backup application can beat Titanium!
Yeah, in the end I had to abandon my save files.
I'll make it a point to use TB from now on. Thanks.
You're welcome mate be careful next time!

Hey I think I found a fix for ya. I just went through the same thing. I flashed a ROM and boom! I can't update jack even though all my data was on my external sd card. Uber gay. But here's a quick step by step:
1. Download and load gobackup
2. Make a backup of anything at all. It can be 1k of stuff for all i care.
3. Go to gobackup and check the settings you should see the file path (or something similar to it) /storage/sdcard0/GObackup/Allbackup
4. In any event check the path (this/that/sdcard/blahblahblah...) and make sure you have that Allbackup at the end. That's why you did step 2 is to get that folder loaded.
5. However you'd like, I used root explorer to copy and paste it, or you can simply use the USB funtion, but find the gobackup file in your external sd, pick out your backup and place it in the Allbackup folder mentioned in steps 3 and 4. And voila! Open gobackup and it'll be there. I hope it works for you to.

didn't work for me either.
I can see it all mnt/emmc/gobackup/allbackup/newbackup
this is the path the app refers to at its base - but cannot restore from it
guys does not worket for me either im so mad right now!!!!
all of my contacts and sms and all other thing is gone
but i find my prev back up on dropbox
its working but its my old back up and i need my last back up
this app is bull ****!!!!!!
Same problem, but I won't give up without fight.
Anyway, I tried to change permissions, add exceptions in system files, format card - non of this helped. Still Go Backup is useless in every way. Here are some screenshots, maybe they will help someone solve this problem.
Hi. Finally fix that
after flashing new ROM, i made a new backup (from 1 sms, 1 contact and 1 call log that i make me).
then rename old backup to name of new backup, after delete the new backup in file manager. (Ex. "2013-09-12_16-30-18_sms.dat" to "2013-09-14_02-50-09_sms.dat"
and restore new backup in Go backup that contain old data!
Sorry for my bad Eng
thanks

Hi.
So my phone is HTC Desire Z, downgraded to 2.2, and disabled root acces.
I'm using SMS Backup & Restore INFOLIFE LLC
Also I've got from this program .db file.
So my restoring sms took too long - after 12000, 3-4 sec for one sms (reach - 24000). Earlier when I've got ROOT acces (roms like, MIUI, Mimicry) it takes max 2hours to restore everyting. Now just it's too long.
My only copy is, as I said, from SMS Backup & Restore. Is any way to do it faster?
I tried to copy a template to see how android store sms, and then transform sqlite file to this template - and then replace. But I don't have root acces And I can't do, becouse my digitizer is broken (a part of touch), and then I will have some problems with warranty.
Anyone help?
If sth is not clear - write it and I will more explain.
It's a very bad time when you are not using WhatsApp. The thing is I was using s3 with root and many more. And I always use to take backup with titanium application. I took WhatsApp backup in my s3. Unfortunately in last week my s3 gets wet and now it won't work. But I have that backup file in my sdcard. Yesterday I bought galaxy a5 which I don't want root ri8 now. The main problem is I want restore my WhatsApp data. Because I was using my wp on my very old number and now I couldn't able to do verification of wp again. So I had this problem many time but now because of new phone it's very difficult to restore because tb ask for root access. I want to use my wp on my old number so please help me. Hw can I restore my tb data in my new phone which is not yet root..?
I have no full solution, but just an idea. In your TitaniumBackup folder, you should find a tar.gz file with the name of the WhatsApp apk. In there, you should find a data folder and then a /. folder, in which there should be the actual data used by WhatsApp. Then, if your new device accepts that, you should be able to push with adb these files and folders to the new data folder of your new installatation of WhatsApp.
I have never tested anything like that, so I don't take any responsibility, but it is an idea based on Helium from Clockworkmod which uses this trick.
