EVO 3D GSM- Stuck/Bootloop after upgrade - HTC EVO 3D

Hello,
Been going through the threads related to this topic. Phone Specs:
BOOT 1.49.11
Unlocked
S-ON
Shooter-S
Revolution CM Recovery
I tried to update from zip but phone said wrong zipped image. I did a full backup using CM and then tried to flash radio but it failed. I did recover but phone screen goes black and loops. I downloaded YODAS Deoxed and cool ICE and flashed using ZIP. Did wipe/clear cache but now phone is stuck on htc logo.
I did extract boot.img and flash using fastboot and flashed zip back but without success.
Can anyone please advise regarding this issue?
Thank You

Hello fellow EVO 3d user, I read your post and I think I can help shed some light on your predicement. It sounds like your radios are not compatible with yoda and cool sense. Also you tried to flash the update firmware and failed. It's because your s-on and your bootloader is unlocked. To flash radios you will need the correct ones for the gsm EVO 3d . You will more than likely have to flash an ruu file for your region and carrier. If your unbranded just go ahead and use the European one. First you will need to relock your bootloader in fastboot command. Fastboot oem lock. Here's a list of ruu's. Im cdma but I will try to help you http://www.filefactory.com/f/4ef0ef536face67a/. Now once you.find the appropriate file. Place it on your pc and hook your phone up in fastboot. next run the ruu exe. If everything succeeds you will be on hboot 1.53 with the latest radios. At this point just unlock your bootloader and you should be able to run yoda or cool sense. Use 4ext recovery instead of cwm. It's the best recovery. Goodluck.

Thanks for your reply... I used leedroid and was able to boot the phone finally. Problem is I cannot access wifi and I want to return to original gingerbread version. what would you advise? same thing, get RUU from the link you gave?
Will phone be S-On after RUU'ing phone?
Besides if i wanted to upgrade to ICS at this point? what would you advise my friend?

the problem is actually your firmware. Leedroid uses the old firmware whereas the newer roms use the latest firmware.
you should do what Jsparta26 suggests. Run an ICS RUU from the link and you'll have ICS with latest firmware, hboot and radio. You will have to unlock it using a new code after that if you want to flash recovery/roms
And yes you will be S-on after unlocking. for s-off you'll need to do the wire trick.
Just a heads up, if you want to s-off in the future you'll have to do the wire trick. If you want to use the downgrade method then dont update to ICS with a RUU just yet. After your hboot gets updated to 1.53 wire trick is your ONLY option of s-off

Okay i get it... My evo3d is made in taiwan and was not branded (orange/vodafone or whatever) which ICS RUU would you advise from link? I am sorry if this question is noob lol.

not at all friend, this is exactly why we have a Q&A section.
I would recommend the European RUU. this one if you want ICS: http://www.filefactory.com/file/2hw...00U_11.25.3504.06_M_release_262714_signed.exe

hi s-off my phone when the hboot was 1.49.0007
but after the ics update i re(s-on) my phone for the new ics update
but now the hboot is 1.53.0007 and can't make it s-off(Update sucks nothing special)
1_tried using unlimited.io but didn't work made an error my guess because it's ics
2_tried using GB ROM(Leedroid) didn't work
used fastboot flash boot boot.img still no luck (restarts every 5 seconds)
3_PG86IMG.zip fails (Main version is Older)
4_last shooter ruu error 140
Any advice? thank you
If you accepted an official OTA update, then you are likely now stuck in Hboot1.5-Hell. (I made this mistake many moons ago.)
You can try one of the many methods to downgrade your HBoot, but I don't know how that works with the official ICS update.
Sorry.
thanks for answering
hope there will be a solution soon
not much of a problem still can flash any ICS ROM Unless Sense 4.0
but if there are any other ideas please help

That error could mean the update put your bootloader to stock I'm not certain of what your capable of doing at the moment but I do know to unlock the bootloader for hboot 1.5 you had to use the HTC unlock method and maybe you'll have to use it. I'm not an expert so this may not be the case but keep in mind you said your hboot is at a different value than previous to me it would only make sense to use the HTC method to unlock reestablish root the use the wire trick to get s-off. If you try this I wish you success. Sorry if this seems lacking but if I find something out I'll make sure you know

1_ you tried unlimited.io and it didn't work? Thats surprising to me.
2_ have you tried booting recovery from fastboot and flashing a gb rom? Fastboot boot recovery yourrecovery.img
3_ You can run an older ruu if you change your main version, but it still won't lower your hboot, your phone says its version "x.x.x.x" and the ruu is lower so it won't flash.
4_ you will never be able to lower your hboot unless you use a downgrade method like unknownforces brick/downgrade. If you put a lower hboot in the newest ruu, it won't run because you've broken the HTC signature. Id try the wire trick again if I were you.
Question, why did you s-on? I've taken ota's with s-off and as soon as I see the new hboot I just reflash the engineering hboot.
I have ~ the same problem as friend.evil, although he says he can run roms with Sense < 4, (if i understood correctly) while i can not.
I did try the lastest GB (provided by anryl) PG86IMG, with no luck (device always stuck in boot loop), but i do not have any goldcard (nor could i find one for evo 3d, but i did not google for it that much)
I am not sure about what you (anryl) mean by « official pg86img with changed older hboot ? » ?
Would an ICS RUU solve the problem ? I will probably also try to downgrade hboot if no other suggestions pops up =S

I don't mean to be insensitive but if you s-on'd and then took a new ota then youve got a problem on your hands. An older ruu with an older hboot will do you no good as it won't flash unless you change your main version, and even if you do that it won't flash an older hboot, just an older system (gb). You should go ahead and check in to downgrading.

Gotcha, well you should consider downgrading to get s-off. It's much more trouble free than s-on. Are you gsm or cdma?
NVM, dumb question, lol, if you took an ics ota then you're gsm
Edit... After reading your post in the link provided, is say that an ics ruu would fix u up. I'm cdma so I wouldn't know where to find it at.
Thanks for you suggestions… But still, i don't understand why downgrading should be necessary : why would flashing a rom, stock or not be a problem for the bootloader ? Can we not write to system or flash the boot partition anymore (from fastboot, using fastboot flash boot boot.img ?) in 1.53.0007 ?
(And indeed, gsm forgot to mention, sry)

You might be on to something there, some hboots don't accept commands that others do. I would think that if you changed your main version and then ran a gb pg86img, it would get you back to gb but it won't change your hboot.
Have you tried booting a recovery from fastboot with fastboot boot recovery.img?
You can't use radios, ruu's, or the juop s-off method with 1.53. It's like having a locked/unlocked boatloader.

[Q] HBOOT - What do I need to know?

Here is where I am with my phone.
Shooter XC Ship S-OFF RL
HBOOT-1.40.1100
RADIO-0.97.10.0530
Rooted
clockworkmod
Cool Sense v11
-----------------------------------------
I am hoping that I am not the only one that has NO idea what to do with the HBOOT and what HBOOT I need or should be running.
So here are a few questions I hope other have. I guess things have changed a bit since I was on my EVO 4G?
Seeing that for now I am on a ICS rom, will it hurt to upgrade my HBOOT?
Will I lose anything by upgrading my HBOOT?
Can I run ICS and JB ROMS on the new HBOOT?
What is the HBOOT really? (help me understand it a little)
Can I run ANY recovery with any HBOOT?
HBOOT anf KERNEL's, do they play nice?
---------------------------------------------------------
Here is the deal, I want to jump to a JB rom as soon as one is fully working, and want to try out the new Cool Sense v11 but I think being on the old HBOOT is giving me boot loops, but even if not I want to understand them a little more and know if I should upgrade it.
Thanks for filling me in a bit!
Its not the hboot that gives bootloop. its the firmware. You are S-off so hboot doesnt really matter.
http://d-h.st/Mf1
put in sdcard. reboot to bootloader and accept update.
will wipe data so make a backup.
As for the recovery try 4EXT. best out there for evo 3d
and as for JB try agrabrens Disarmed Toaster. still a few bugs but really smooth

Whoa!
That PG86IMG.zip file looks like a complete set of firmware for a GSM phone and the OP clearly has a CDMA phone.
And much testing on the Evo 3D CDMA model has proven that the version of the bootloader installed, not just the rest of the firmware, can cause booting problems. The bootloader is actually part of the firmware and works in conjunction with the other firmware to write and erase partitions, in addition to the other functions it performs.

OP, I was in the same situation as you until yesterday. Now I'm latest hboot and unlocked (still s-off)
I took the advice in Tribulattifather's rom on the last page. Jbear's cdma ics hboot and latest 1.58 yesterday and I'm G2G. No issues whatsoever. Also if you're s-off you can change hboot anytime you likely. PM me if you need more info but its simple even for me who has half a brain

oops.. sorry my bad :S
should have realized that *facepalm*
I'm sure the hboot does matter but i was just saying that its not really a requirement to have the latest hboot to run JB,kernels or recoveries. I have the revolutionary hboot and havn't had any problems with the latest roms/kernels.

I guess the GSM and CDMA models are a little different in that respect, since the most recent Sprint ICS 1.58 bootloader has problems booting GB and AOSP ROM's on the CDMA model. The older hboots do run those ROM's.
ramjet73
So I should. . .
Use this HBOOT

PG86IMG_1.58-hboot.zip
This Recovery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1561999
and I will be ok to run most, ICS or JB ROM?
Anymore I am only half sure what is going on, lol in the old days you could just flash away.
And thanks everyone!!!
Really, I am not sure if I have to do it in order or if it matters?
Also, I see 4ext will not let you update firmware or the radio. . . How do I know if I have the ones I should have. . ?
If coolexe's rom is using the new kernel, then the 1.4 hboot is causing the issue. You would need the 1.58 hboot.
1.58 hboot: needed to flash anything with the latest kernel. Can flash any sense based ics rom. Cannot flash AOSP, CM, or GB roms.
1.4 hboot: Can flash any custom rom except ones that use the new kernel.
No recovery can flash hboots or firmware , but since you are s-off, you can flash either hboot at will in the bootloader. You can also update to the latest firmware using freeza's 2.89 zip available in the development thread.
I think that answers all your questions, but if not, please reply.

Technically it could all be considered firmware since it is all flashed to the NAND memory of the phone, and an RUU.exe flashes all of it, but generally people think of the boot, system and data partitions as the "ROM" and more as software than firmware. The system and data partitions are also modified during normal operation which is generally not true of the firmware partitions. The "firmware" consists mostly of the bootloader, radios and low level functions similar to BIOS on a PC, and it gets flashed to different partitions.

return to stock gsm evo 3d, downgrade bootloader? s-off?

hey forum
i really need some help now. i have a gsm evo 3d unlocked up and running a custom rom (nonsense). now i want to return to stock, ive tried flashing the ruu for several times, but each time it says bootloader version error. so i guessed that i have to downgrade my hboot version from 1.53.0007 to something 1.49.007 or similiar. i just cant get it to work, neither with flashmaniacs way, or the manual way. in bootloader when loading the PG86IMG ist says version older update fail.each time i fail i reunlock the bootloader, so atleast i can use my phone. the worst and most foolish part of me: no nandroid backup. so i recognize my fault.
Do you have the newest ruu.exe for your region/carrier? Once you get it, boot into bootloader, connect to computer (should say fastboot usb), lock bootloader, then run ruu. That should put you at stock.
Test shooter u ruu for ics?

Did you at any point update your firmware to the new ics one? if not then do it and try an ics rom. most of the newer ics roms require the new firmware.

as the wire trick did not work i want to try to downgrade with Free3Vo tool (sorry i don't remeber the thread) or this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1471246 ....

If nothing works for you then Relock the bootloader -> again boot into bootloader -> select fastboot -> connect to PC (phone should show "fastboot USB") -> then RUN RUU.exe.
RUU works even when phone is in "fastboot USB" mode. Make sure you use the RUU made for your phone/region and the battery is charged enough.
If you would like to attempt the downgrade method then try this

Worked flawlessly for me. Just make sure you have a valid cid

[Guide] Quick And Dirty RUU Flashing for CDMA S-OFF Users

This is going to be a short and simple guide for S-OFF users that want to update to the current RUU level or refresh their phone because they are having issues like being unable to boot certain ROM's. You will not lose S-OFF by flashing the RUU.
1. Do a nandroid backup of your current ROM if you want to restore it later.
2. Download the current version of the RUU for your phone in exe or zip format from this page.
3. Run the exe version of the RUU in Windows or the zip version as a PG86IMG.zip file through the bootloader. If using the bootloader method make sure the file is named exactly "PG86IMG.zip" and placed in the root of your SD card before starting the bootloader.
There is no need to unlock the bootloader before running it if you are S-OFF and there is troubleshooting information in this post if you have problems. It may be necessary to run the RUU twice if you have a custom bootloader installed when it is run the first time. If the utility hangs after flashing the bootloader from Windows just cancel it and restart.
I recommend downloading and installing the OTA(s) immediately after flashing the RUU to get the most current firmware while still 100% stock, but the OTA firmware update(s) can be downloaded as a separate PG86IMG.zip file if you forget or can't do that for some reason.
4. Flash a custom hboot using the instructions in this post. My recommendation for a good general purpose hboot is the JBear GB 1.50.5050 version unless you are running an ICS Sense ROM like stock or Cool ICS that requires an ICS bootloader (1.57.xxxx or 1.58.xxxx).
5. Connect your phone to a PC and start the bootloader in "fastboot USB " mode, then issue the following command to flash your favorite recovery:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img (where "recovery.img" is the name of the recovery file in your ADB/fastboot directory)
6. Boot into recovery and restore a nandroid or flash another custom ROM. You may have to wipe cache+dalvik and restart recovery if you get any error messages from the recovery program.
That's it. You're now updated or re-synced with the current firmware, the hboot that meets your requirements and your favorite recovery.
Here are some additional links that might be helpful:
4EXT Recovery OP for the Evo 3D CDMA thread with a direct link to recovery.img in the download section (not the most current version)
Current TeamWin (TWRP2) touch recovery for the CDMA Evo 3d.
Virgin Mobile OTA firmware only in PG86IMG.zip format.
Sprint OTA firmware only in PG86IMG.zip format.

Thanks for this.
Question,the RUU links...
Am I looking for the link with the radio he has currently on his phone?
0.97.10.0530?

No. That's an older GB level and the most current RUU for the Evo 3D is the 2.89.651.2 ICS version. That's the one I recommend.
Since he is S-OFF already it's easy to revert to a GB RUU if neccessary.

I better not mess with it,lol
This isn't anything like flashing new ROM's on my phone.
Thanks though.

You're welcome.
It's not really that difficult if you are familiar with rooting and flashing HTC devices but I can understand how it might be for users coming from other brands. Samsung in particular is definitely less complicated.

Thanks!
Thanks for this great post ramjet. Really a great concise How-to.
Nevermind, fixed.

I flashed the above RUU .exe and I'll get to 10%, then my phone reboots (RUU program says "attaining bootloader" or something) and go into a bootloop. Is there a specific hboot necessary to run this. I am on 1.04.200 and s-off, 1.09.00.706
I also tried updating via the bootloader method as well..... runs well....updates like four of the ten check offs and then bootloops as well.
Edit: turns out I was flashing the wrong version, oops

From experience I've discovered that the RUU.exe utility will sometimes stop after flashing the stock bootloader if it is run with a custom hboot installed, which is why I put this comment in the OP:
If the utility hangs after flashing the bootloader from Windows just cancel it and restart.

I've had no problem completing the RUU.exe flash if I just cancel the utility in the Windows task manager and restart it.
Others have reported that re-flashing the RUU.zip file through the bootloader also works if the original flash is incomplete.
Also, make sure that you downgrade your hboot after flashing the RUU since the stock hboot won't boot GB or AOSP based ROM's.

Ok one more stupid question, after successfully flashing the correct RUU my phone boots into the stock virgin mobile. How do I get into bootloader (to flash OTA update and hboot) from here since holding power and volume down button from off no longer work.

Try removing/replacing the battery and then use the Power+VolumeDown buttons together to enter the bootloader.
The stock ROM has the "fast boot" option turned on in the power settings by default and that will interfere if you try to enter the bootloader after powering down from the stock ROM.

Thank you very much for your patience and help Ramjet. Everything went well.

Please excuse me this might have been asked before.
I'm currently S-Off H-boot 1.40 but still on gingerbread firmware(2.17 radio 0.97.10.0530). also flashed to Boost Mobile. My question is if I run RUU to newest build will I lose boost mobile flash?

I honestly don't know.
There is a post by a cricket user in my rooting and S-OFF guide that says the customization is not lost for that carrier but I've never used Boost and can't speak to that.
Perhaps another Boost user on these forums has experience with flashing the RUU.

++sorry++
Using the bootloader procedure is, by far, the easiest way of doing the RUU process that I've encountered. From custom ROM, to stock, back to a custom ROM in less than 45 minutes.
ramjet, thank you for your contributions to our platform.
so my wife is hboot 1.40, radio version 0.97.... running a GB ROM. I need to update her EVERYTHING(you pointed me here) and get her on NegaLite BluROM. I believe I will need to update her hboot as well. At what point in this process should that be done? Do I need to be worried that her current ROM is incompatible with either the new RUU or the new bootloader? And if it is, then I just work through it all in recovery?
Very useful thread, and thank you very much, by the way.

Is her phone S-OFF? If so, there is a link in the OP to a post that covers updating the hboot. If not, the only way to update the hboot is to flash a more current RUU.

Yes she is S-off. She also already has 4ext recovery installed.
Does this negate my need to flash recovery in the downloader?
Since she is S-off, this should be pretty easy.
I will still need to access the bootloader via Windows cmd, yes? Or can I accomplish all of this using only the handset?

Her hboot is:
SHOOTER XC SHIP S-OFF RL
HBOOT-1.40.0000
RADIO-0.97.10.0530
eMMC-boot

Is this a custom hboot, or stock? I ask because of the caution on the OP regarding custom bootloaders. And I am not sure because I changed her bootloader a week or so ago and had to change it back.

That's a stock hboot so you should be fine. You can still update using the RUU if a custom hboot is installed, but it might take a restart to complete after the stock hboot is installed.
