[Q] Help, Nightmare Sense Boot problem - HTC Amaze 4G

So I recently installed Nightmare Sense v1.3. I used the latest CWM, and wiped/factory reset, wiped cache and wiped dalvik. I cannot get past the boot screen. I tried reflashing but that didn't help. Someone please help, the thread doesn't contain clear instructions on how to install so I kinda went on my own here. Thanks.

I had a hard time at first to. Before you try again, go to the thread and download the newer 1.4 version. It is Somewhere around page 162 I think. Then make sure you wipe all partitions before installing the zip in recovery. Good Luck

I'm currently having the exact same problem.
The strangest thing is - the phone was booting just fine yesterday.
I had Nightmare Sense 4.0 v1.2 on the phone and noticed that if the battery power got somewhat low it would sometimes shut the whole phone off (crash it off). I'd have to hold the power button to turn it back of, of course. Then after a week or so the phone would seemingly freeze at the HTC boot screen. I'd then have to pull the battery and then turn the phone back on, at which point it would boot up normally. Then today (well, I guess last night, technically) the phone would no longer move past the boot screen.
I can still get into CWM Recovery (v5.0.2.7) and do all of the thing I could do before, but doing complete wipes of everything, trying to load a new ROM, etc, do nothing to help. Plus, CWM is constantly telling me "E: Can't Mount /cache/recovery/command" "log" "open log" "mount log" "open log", which I don't remember it saying before.

Just flash a RUU for your carrier, assuming you know the directions already. If not, there are guides that gives you step-by-step directions on how to flash it.
RUUs fixes all software-related issues. From there, just flash a new recovery (I recommend 4Ext), and then flash a ROM.

Mine phone won't even let me install a different ROM.
I realized, when trying to wipe data/factory reset that it says "E:format_volume: make_extf4fs failed on /dev/block/mmcblk0p31" (it says the same thing for 30 as well).
In other words it almost seems like the ROM corrupted the recovery tool or something. I can't format anything and therefore can't change anything. The phone is dead-locked with a broken Nightmare Sense 4.0 v1.3 ROM on it that won't move past the boot screen.

I will do this now, assuming I CAN flash an RUU when the recovery won't let me format.

There's no need to format anything, and have you even read the instructions? You DO NOT flash this in recovery. Please read the instructions in its entirety before proceeding!

No worries, friend.
I used the RUU and got things worked out but MY GOD does it take a long time to go from where I had the problem back to where the phone was directly before said problem. Use the RUU, re-update the phone, re-unlock the bootloader, re-root the phone, re-install a recovery tool, re-install ROM of choice, re-install ALL software and saved info, etc.
Between all of the work and the loading we're talking hours.

Indeed. S-Off is your friend
If you had S-Off, you could've used my tool which would cut down the time needed to only 10-15 minutes.

Well, now ya' tell me!
Ya, my phone had (has) S-Off.

Hmm, well I solved one problem only to gain another MUCH worse problem.
After installing Nightmare Sense 4 v1.4 I now have zero sound of any kind. No phone speaker, no external speaker, no headphone sound, the phone does ring or give a dial tone, I can't hear people talking even though I can connect to them, etc.
Time to re-install yet again!

[Q] Rooted I717, constant reboots, no recovery, flashing stock ROM not working

I changed from an iPhone 4 in May to the Samsung Note. On my iPhone I would immediately jailbreak and install MyWi. In my research to do the same on the note I ran across a rooting tutorial for my device and followed the instructions http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-note-att-i717-root-without-increasing-flash-counter-61325/ (I am not positive, but I feel confident this is the one I followed). I installed Superuser and Titanium Backup, did a backup of ATT connection manager, then removed it. Tethering worked like a charm. This has worked and I had no issues until Friday June 14th.
On Friday, everytime I opened an app on my phone I would get a Force Close. I restarted the phone and watched as it repeatedly happened after every cycle. Believing that installing Droid VNC Server was the issue, the last app I had installed, I removed it successfully and included others I didn’t use. Upon reboot, I noticed the notification of App Updates and a missed call. Checked the application list and noticed that all of the apps I had just removed were still there. I have a ton of pics and videos and thought that I should back them up immediately before I deleted them, prepared for the worst. I was able to do that. I deleted them all, nothing in the gallery. When the phone crapped out again and rebooted, all apps and all pictures back.
I formatted the USB Storage, seemed to delete nothing and also showed the same amount of used space as before.
Time for a restore. I know now that the recovery partition is gone and so a Wipe/reset is fruitless. No problem. I know how to flash the rom. I used this method with Odin. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506330
Everything seemed to work successfully, but upon reboot I get the same app updates notification and the same missed call notification. The same frozen state my phone was in when the issue started on Friday. WTH!
I have everything backed up. How do I get back to stock? I could care less about the counter. I just want my phone to be usable again.

did you try wiping Catche and Dav?
Wipe Catch > Wife Davlik > Fix Permision, then reboot ..
see what happens ..
Not a noob, but here is where i am lost
I booted in to recovery, chose to Wipe/Erase . I see no option to Wipe Davlik except for in SuperUser and there it is a paid option, not sure where to find Fix Permission and then reboot?
I am assuming these are all options for CWM. I attempted to put CWM on an SD card last night and install from ZIP, but Recovery does not seem to see the SD card.
Are these options that are available for CWM, if so I will push through until I get it to work, but I have had no luck to this point.

I have attempted to Flash ROMs I don't desire just to move forward. They all flash and pass in Odin but on reboot I still have my default screen. Unfortunately, I want to go back to stock. I have done plenty of research and need something more to push on to the next thing. I am looking at phone and there is not an Advanced option in recovery. I have read there are options in CWM but I am looking at what I believe is the stock recovery options.

So, maybe I am a newb. I have followed the instructions to install CWM on my device and it even says it was successful. I am doing it from ODIN. See the file I downloaded here. Says it was successful but holding the volume up and then power button. NO CWM.
I am truly frustrated but I want my phone back. Can someone link me to the stupid people posts so I can get my phone working again?

You now have a custom recovery(according to Odin). The problem is, you're doing the wrong key combo as stated above. You can also go to the market and grab FJ's power tool. You can boot into recovery directly from the app. Good luck.

Still having issues. Here is the deal.
I have the phone in Download mode
https://www.dropbox.com/s/dnk6ekjqp9vddev/2012-06-19 19.40.01.jpg
I load the CWM Recovery in the PDA box. Start the flash, get a pass. All looks good to me.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/5q4hayf35mm26wr/odin-success.PNG
I immediately attempt to access CWM Recovery by holding the power, vol+ and vol- and still get the default recovery
https://www.dropbox.com/s/d176blydonlvrlu/2012-06-19 20.13.42.jpg
I am so confused as to what I am doing wrong.
Unfortunately those pics aren't loading for me. Try again with the pic of recovery and the file you're flashing. Thanks. If you still have stock recovery then maybe that's what you're flashing in error.
Try volume up + down and power button. When phone vibrates, release power button but keep holding volume buttons until you are in cwm.
I would use Odin to flash cwm touch recovery from pda, then load a rom via cwm. Using that method you don't even need to root because it's all done at bootloader level and root is built in to the custom rom you flash
SGH-i717 mesosphere-remix

Urgently need help. Would appreciate it very much.

Dear all,
Here is the situation. I decided to root my evo 3d gsm (hboot 1.5++) today, and all went well until I flashed a rom (virtuous). Now whenever I boot on the phone, it shows me this "V" logo and loads for more than 10minutes or so. I can go into my bootloader, but when I attempt to do anything from my clockworkmod recovery, when I press the power button to select different options, I get blank menus and I can attempt nothing. I am an unexperienced user, and can anyone out there who is experience render some assistance? I am at my wits end...
Thanks
Well I'm not too familier with the gsm version... the "V", is that part of the boot animation? and does it just loop over and over? maybe try reflashing clockworkmod and re wipe and install?

The "V" is the part of the boot animation. And the "V" just glows again and again, yeah so i guess it loops. Why I am so worried is because I saw a window of my HTC sense booting to life earlier on, but I saw the words "Unfortunately... has... crashed..." but it was very brief, and after which the animation began again. Is it because I waited for too short a period of time? (around 15 minutes or so) or because it really boot looped? And how do I reflash clockwordmod when I can't access my phone and sd card? Will appreciate your kind help...
I've never had to wait more than 5 minutes for something too boot, and it should really never take longer than that. Can you tell me the steps you took to flash the rom(not to root it). and could you give some more info about your phone? are you s-on or s-off? And what do you mean by blank menus in clockwork mod? Do you know how to boot into your hboot menu? from there you can boot to fastboot and install the recovery from your pc. connect your phone to the pc while in fastboot mode and get your recovery.img file and type the following command from the command line:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery /path/to/<recovery>.img

Ok, here is the infomation. I live in Singapore, which is a part of Southeast Asia, my phone is the GSM version with HBoot 1.530007(i cant remember the decimal placing).
I firstly used HTCDEV to unlock my bootloader, which went well, then I went to evohacks to get the conventional rooting method, which went well too. And it all came when I was careless, and I accidentally forgot to wipe the data and cache of my evo before i flashed the rom. And now it gets stuck in the "V" logo loading phase. If the hboot menu is the menu where I have to press the powerbutton and the volume down button then yes. I can also get into my recovery, but the problem is that it shows a blank menu in (clockwordmod specifically), thus rendering whatever me helpless. i have downloaded the PG86IMG.zip and Im waiting for it to finish. So how do I go about solving this matter? This phone is my only asset and I really want to save it...
Blank menu as in for example when I click "Reboot", or "Factory Reset" or perhaps "Restore" in the CWD Recovery, it just shows me a blank menu with the CWD logo in the background, with no options or drop down words or whatsoever. And the sad thing is that I did not make any recoveries at all.... So I plucked my sd card out, and now im waiting to finish downloading the PG86IMG.zip to put on my sd and into my phone, and flash it to revert it back to stock and stuff..... I hope this works
Ok, well as long as you can get to either hboot or recovery you'll be ok. I would recommend flashing 4ext recovery, as it has never failed me and seems to help others. here is the link to it. Download that and pull the recovery.img out and flash that from your pc with the command I gave above. It sounds like you are either pushing the wrong button in the recovery or it might just be messing up for some reason. Is it the touchscreen version of clockworkmod?

The recovery is the free version, so it shouldn't be the touch one. May I ask, what do you mean by recovery.img? I emptied my SD card so that I can put the PG86IMG.zip into it later. Any more specific steps you can give? Sorry but Im really a newb in the android world

The recovery.img is the image that the phone flashes to install the recovery. If you look in the zip I posted in the link you'll see that file in there. the one I posted is the 4ext touch recovery. you can manually flash that file to your phone in case you can't get it to boot(like your case). I would suggest trying the 4ext recovery I linked, or maybe try to boot to recovery again and see if its touch based. Were the menus working when you flashed the virtuous rom, and then it stopped working?
OH stupid me. Whoops. Actually I CAN navigate. Ive been pressing the wrong button all this while. I pressed the power instead of the camera, which is the select button. Whoops. seems like CMD was working after all. sorry...
ok but still, can I just attempt to install the RUU file I downloaded in the CWD menu? Will it work? Will my phone be reverted back to its original unrooted state? I saw someone say it could...
There is something bugging me though. My SD card is now completely empty. Will it have any negative effects on what i do?
I thought something like that was happening, glad you got it sorted. Try to wipe everything and reinstall your virtious rom again first. yes the PG86IMG.zip will return you back to complete stock, recovery and all. So if you do that you might have to re-root all over again.

So theoretically flashing the ROM shouldn't take more than... around 15 minutes?
correct
Its now 10 minutes and so far my phone had made 2 major vibrations. So if this doesn't work, can i just wipe all the data again, put the PG86IMG.zip in my phone, go to recovery to install it, and then I just press reboot right?

Sometimes sense roms can take a bit, but if its vibrating than it should be working. if not just put the PG86IMG.zip on the root of your sdcard and boot into hboot and let it do its thing. no need to wipe data for that.

[Q] CWM for Atrix 2.3.6

Hello, I am new to this whole smartphone world, and I have no idea what to do next.
I asked in multiple forums why my new battery's life sucks even after calibration, which after reboot the battery goes from 65% to 98%, everytime.
So I was told to get CWM for my atrix, and last time I did, I almost got bricked. I got this error:

Failed to boot 0X1000 -- I always thought this was a HARD BRICK
I have root access and unlocked, using T-Mobile, and everytime it boots it says "unlocked" at the top during the Motorola logo.
So what are my steps to get CWM on the phone (for 2.3.6), and will my phone still work with t mobile, and will my battery not die in 20 minutes of reading text?
You can install CWM, either through fastboot (recommended) or through ROM Manager (personally I dislike it). However I don't think any of this is likely to fix your battery issues. Unless you're seriously exaggerating, your battery draining so fast could indicate some hardware problems. Might just be time for a new battery.

Oh I see. Could you provide me a link, can't seem to find one for 2.3.6.
Also the battery is BRAND NEW, got it yesterday in the mail, and the phone is new as well.
Hm, then I guess it shouldn't be a hardware failure.
CWM has nothing to do with your OS or its version. Just flash whichever you want (the latest version would make the most sense).

Ah okay, would I get this error again:
SVF:105.1:2
Failed to boot 0X1000
Also flashing CWM doesn't delete stuff right? Only flashing custom ROMS does?
I don't know if you'll get that error or not, but that error is easily solvable. Yes, like I said, CWM has nothing to do with your normal system unless you're flashing the system through CWM.
Please read this thread, most things are already explained there.

Okay! well how do I install CWM, nobody explains anything. I can;t find any steps anywhere. There are some, but say just flash it. Well what commands do I put in cmd? Idk what to do...
----------------
Okay I installed CWM recovery, but when I go into "android recovery" I don;t see all the the options. I mean I get past the triangle, but I only see four options.
Did I get cwm recovery or not? I followed the steps installing the .img file.
What options do you see? And what exactly did you install, and from where?
It's possible you installed some older version. Personally I use RomRacer's recovery which is based on CWM, pretty happy with it.

I used the link you provided the second post shows how to load fastboot, and the third post show how to flash the recovery, and I used this: the latest CWM recovery from here, which is the newest.
I see reboot at the top
"wipe data/factory reset"
wipe cache partition
and wipe baseband data
can I follow this? I did this before and bricked the phone
Hm. Not sure why you'd want to follow some random tutorials on random sites. Everything you need is available on this forum alone.
Also, no idea why you see only those options, there should be much more AFAIK...
I'm using this recovery, it might be old but it's rock-solid, reliable and dependable. Might want to try with that one. The procedure is the same, just with a different IMG file.

GOT IT!!!! Finally! my computer was acting weird and I guess the moto drivers didn't install properly. After reboot and new drivers on comp, it flashed fine and I am in cwm recovery. I flashed this: 0408_1720-signed.apk
so I guess from there could I clear the battery stats, after 100% charge, then let die and charge again off?

Yes, it's worth a shot. Won't do any harm and it might just fix your problem.
MY GOD PROBLEM AFTER PROBLEM!!!
So after installing cwm recovery. I wanted to fix the crappy battery, so I let the phone on until it died, and connected the phone to the wall charger, and it boots into CWM automatically.
I don't even see the charge screen. After hitting reboot, the phone than boots into the normal android OS.
SO HOW can I charge the phone when it's off, without having it turn on by itself?
---
Okay WTH! Now it boots fine, but won't get into CWM recovery. Even selecting android recovery takes me to the crappy stock recovery with the four options only. WTH is wrong?
I am going back to $10 phones.
Good bye.
Hmm, I don't know... Either you're doing something wrong (no idea what) or your device is borked in some way.
Maybe someone else can chime in...

[SOLVED-partially][Q] In need of a Fresh start guide!

I have no idea what happened to my GNote, but the problem is when I reboot to ROM and unlock the screen the screen turns black, keys lit and that's it 'till I reboot and it happens all over again.
I'm looking for a fix or guide to completly wipe the phone and start over. Luckily I have my current ROM backed up.
Thanks in advance.
Are you flashing a kernel?
Once I flashed my favorite kernel with a new rom. It booted, but then I had infinite blackness. To fix it I booted into recovery, performed a factory reset, installed only a rom and was fine.

Nope, just a custom ROM, flashed 8 before this one and never had any issues. When my phone was working, I noticed something odd in root browser; some folders and files have their date set to 12/31/1969?????
I can still access TWRP and download mode.

Put the phone in download mode, open Kies, plug phone into usb, in Kies select tools, firmware upgrade and initialization. Have your phones serial number handy (Can be found under the battery). Enter model number using all caps (SGH-I717) and follow the prompts. This will put the phone back to stock 4.1.2. You will loose root and recovery, but will be back to complete stock. By far the easiest, safest method to completely wipe and start over.

What rom are you flashing, and where did you get it from? If it's from a reliable source, and you're certain it's for your device, you might have a corrupt file. You can try re-downloading it and flashing again. If it happens again notify the developer and try a different rom.

I hate when that happens!
If you want to just fix what you've got you can reflash the SAME rom right on top of what you've got.
If you want a fresh start, in recovery perform a factory reset, install the rom of your choice, and enjoy!
After spending all night working on restoring the phone, at least the main issue is solved, I'm back on a custom ROM.
But I still see the same folders and files with date last modified: 12/31/1969. Can't believe I'm the only one with this issue.
KIES for me does not have the selection firmware upgrade and initialization under tools...I have Emergency Firmware Recovery and Firmware Upgrade Settings, which locks the program up (I'm on a Mac)...what happened is that I tried to do a upgrade that T-Mo was passing on, and can't boot past the screen that has the gray battery, or if I'm lucky, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4G Android 4G screen prior to the T-Mo jingle...phone has been wiped twice, at least...
And where do you see these files? Most likely they were on the usb storage and it didn't get wiped during ROM install.
What if I put all of the ROMs, etc., on the SD card, and attempt to restore that way?

My response was meant for the OP.

[Q] Did I just brick my phone by messing with framework-htc-res.apk??

Sorry for the double post, but I was afraid this old thread I posted in originally may not get attention since the subject line is not quite on point.
My original post is here --
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=42069716&postcount=49
I guess since I can still get to my bootloader and theoretically hit factory reset, I may not really be bricked. But I'd really love to find a fix other than factory reset. At the moment -- when I try to boot to the phone, it goes through the initial white HTC screen and then just stops on the Android eye screen (like this http://static1.businessinsider.com/...-is-what-the-boot-up-animation-looks-like.jpg )
Anyone??
Many many thanks from a dumbass newb.

I don't want to offer a fix because I'm sure someone has a better way, but have you thought about just flashing a new ROM at this point? Cyanogenmod, Venom, Avatar, Pacman rom now. Some good choices.

I was thinking about that, but couldn't even figure out how to get a ROM onto my phone to flash.
Forgot I could use TWRP to force it to USB mount to my computer and get it on there like that. Just flashed Viper, but now after rebooting I'm stuck on the white HTC quietly brilliant splash screen (I don't even get to the red Droid eye screen where I was freezing before).
Ugh.
I guess maybe I need to find a stock HTC Sense ROM to flash first???
Totally lost...

The ROM probably flashed fine. You have to pull the boot.img out of the zip and flash it via fast boot since you're not s-off:
Fasboot flash boot boot.img
Also, when you get everything going be sure to remember to make a backup. And you should do so before flashing anything or modifying system files.

Well...
I'm still screwed apparently.
Now I'm freezing on the HTC-quietly-brilliant white screen with the "This build is for development purposes only..." message beneath it whenever I try to do a regular reboot. So I'm basically still stuck with bootloader/TWRP only right now even after trying to flash a ROM.

You're trying to flash venom right? Download the newest venom. Open the zip with WinZip or other application. Pull out the boot IMG. Also, go download TWRP version 2.3.3.0 since newer builds have issues with aroma installers. Flash that recovery. Wipe data, cache, system. Flash venom ROM. Reboot to bootloader and in fastboot flash the boot IMG.
TWRP 2.3.3.0 here:

And now I'm really kind of nervous --
I just decided that this wasn't worth crying over since my phone wasn't all the customized anyway, so I just tried doing a factory reset and that failed, too.
If anyone wants to help walk me out of this mess (any outcome that leads to a usable phone would be brilliant), I would be all ears. It seems like I can't even get to recover now, so all I've got is the bootloader/USB connection to my PC to use fastboot there.
Many many thanks in advance!

I was able to get 2.3.3.0 on my phone via fastboot and can run that version of the recovery now.
However, I'm not sure how to flash a ROM at this point since I cannot get it onto my phone.
(when I use TWRP to tell my phone to mount as USB storage, the SD card is no longer an option -- I cannot select it -- and Windows cannot see the phone as a drive anymore except to ask if I want to format it to FAT32... which I'm assuming I should not do)
Can I somehow get it done via the bootloader screen using fastboot ?or adb? to get the VIPERlte_2.2.0.zip ROM package to my phone?

No reason to be nervous. If your bootloader is unlocked you're fine. Follow steps 1-12 in this post to get a functional stock ROM on your phone. I realize the post doesn't sound like it relates to your issue, but the instructions should generally be viewed as "how to get your phone back to normal".

I'm going to try now, however the thing that really made me nervous was that when I tried to do a factory reset via TWRP last night (step 1 of the process you just suggested), I got a fail message from TWRP:

Failed"
then down below several of the lines say
E:Unable to mount '/sdcard'
E:Unable to recreate android secure folder.
E:Unable to mount '/sdcard' during GUI startup.
E:Unable to mount when trying to read settings
E:Unable to mount internal storage
I'm surprised no one has suggested, ya know, for him to run an RUU.

As I said, I'm all ears.
Should I run the RUU to get back to stock/relocked? Or is there something else out there that will allow me to stay unlocked?
You can RUU and then do the whole song and dance to get back to unlocked. If you go S-OFF you shouldn't have to worry about re-unlocking the bootloader.
You can either use an sdcard reader to put the RUU zip in the root of your SD as PJ53IMG.zip or put your phone into bootloader mode run
fastboot oem rebootRUU
Once at the black HTC screen
Run
fastboot flash zip <nameofruu>.zip
It might error saying something about main version or if you have supercid it'll complain about that too. Just run the same command again
fastboot flash zip <nameofruu>.zip
And it should take and flash then entire thing and get you back to a working state.

No, OP, don't do that. I'm tired of reading "run an RUU" when it is not necessary. I posted a perfectly reasonable solution that would leave samstein66 with an unlocked bootloader, a very clean factory reset stock ROM, root, and custom recovery. Telling someone to run the RUU leaves them with a locked device which potentially still requires a factory reset to get as close to default settings as when it came from the factory. Now they get the joy of re-unlocking their bootloader, which for our non-htcdev-supported phone means sensitive processes that can mess up a device if not done carefully.

No, I cannot select those. I can only select cache, data, etc. and when it tries to mount, my computer cannot recognize the drive as H: like it normally would when USB mounted. It does see that the device is trying to mount as H, but that's where I get the Windows message saying I need to format the drive to being able to recognize it. Since I wasn't sure what to do there, I played it safe and went with not formatting (since I didn't know exactly what would get formatted).
