Rooting Android - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Folks,
I was looking for some piece of information.
I am planning to overclock my GPU on Galxy Note N7000.
Is this possible without a root? I guess not.
Anyways i use some enterprise apps on my phone so once i root i wont be able to use those anymore, My question is once i root or change to some custom rom can i go back to original settings if required?
Also if you can point me some right directions in overclocking GPUs and results, would be nice.
Many Thanks

Hi mate, from what I know, if you can root your gadget and install a nandroid recovery (ex. Clockworkmod a.k.a CWM) you can make a backup of your current system state, By doing that You can safely restore your entire system state (phonecall sms etc) to the time you backup your system using cwm.
I never heard about overclocking a GPU, are you sure GPU? Not CPU.
I recommend you try googling some info before rooting, its better to root your app while still preserve the DRM, so that the enterprise app still functional in root state.

Yes... you can back to your backup state if you feel that the custom rom is not suitable for you.
Press thanks if it helps

you can root and you unroot it.
back to original setting? use odin

There'll always be traces of a root left behind, though, so don't expect to fool anyone if you're unrooting for that reason.

Thanks for the info.
And yes i mean GPU, few games are lagging on my galaxy note, planning to overclock for better performance, hope it works though

You can unroot your phone and set it back entirely, by using an RUU.

Root Status

Just wondering if anyone has tried rooting their Canadian Notes. I'd try it on one of the Notes at my store if I could.
Methods that might work:
S2 Root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414&highlight=unroot
This is supposed to work with all Samsung devices
Super One Click 2.3.3: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
There are a couple other Skyrocket methods that could be attempted too. But I don't see why these 2 methods wouldn't work. If someone could try them out and report back, I'm sure we'd all appreciate it.
Can't comment on the first method since I don't feel like patching in sketchy kernels, but Super One Click is a big pile of fail on this one, as is the zergrush exploit in general. Both just crash out and fail to get permissions.

Hmm... It probably won't be any different for the AT&T version. I'll give every method a shot though.
I'm going to wait to see if someone will release a kernel that already has root more than likely.

Should work with this version since this phone is just a big Skyrocket.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA App
I am using a Korean note which is the exact version as the AT&T version
The way to do it would be to flash a kernel which would enable root
I wonder if it would apply to the devices in Canada Nd the Us eversions
Well when it gets here I'm going to use SuperOneClick 2.3.3 and do temp root and see if it works so I don't break it lol
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
Using the Canadian Telus version - SGH-I717D - the latest Super One Click 2.3.3 fails when attempting the zergrush exploit.
Using the S2 Root mentioned above (without flashing anything extra, mind you), it says:
Device Manufacturer: SAMSUNG
Device Model: SGH-I717D
ROM Build: SGH-I717D-user 2.3.6 GINGERBREAD 207 release-keys
...click "Root Device"...
Checking Device Connection...
Device Connected!
Restarting ADB Server...
Checking ROOT Access...
Superuser Request Has Been DENIED! Aborting...
if I remember correctly, many users of the galaxy s series had trouble rooting at one point because of the signature verification in the 3e recovery. So if the note has the same recovery you won't be able to root using super one click until you remove this verification process. Can anyone try rebooting into recovery to check what recovery they are using.

Okay i just rooted a skyrocket and i had to ODIN flash CMW the flash superuser.zip now thinking should i try that same attempt with the Note... Uhh id hate to brick this bad boy already!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA App
Personally, I wouldn't risk it until you know for sure you can return it. If you have your AT&T version in hand pull the full rom dump so we can root this bad boy.

I've got a Rogers i717, and I'd love to do a rom dump, but I'm not sure how. I assume I need to use ODIN/Heimdall. Could someone walk me through it?
Ill do a dump soon as i get time when i get home.

Hi guys,
I have my note in hand, just gotta run a few errands and I will get root going shortly.
Easiest method will probably be building a kernel with root already included, anyone know of a stock ROM floating about, that would make it a bit easier Reply @ my post in ROM dev forum, thanks

You unfortunately cannot use link2sd with stock ROM
The other thing is that even a swap file is a bad idea on the 5839I
If it is on stock ROM , bricked one already.
Dont think I will worry about it again but you should try root validator instead of
Root checker I think some apps only like superuser and dont always recognize
SuperSU you can get a flashable zip from chainfire's website if the zip at the start
Of thread wont work, easiest way to check for root is probably to try and install
Busybox by the way,
One more thing, there is a file In system/etc that prevents apps to sd by
Deleting the apps to sd files at every reboot, could this be your problem?
Samsung were a bit naughty about things when they set the
firmware up
You can delete it at your own risk, did it myself last time around but to be honest I have some fifty odd
apps installed and after that the phone lacks internal memory anyway, samsung
Havent actually done too bad a job once you get rid of the added bloatware
I hope this info helps, and on stock ROM you also have to reflash CWM everytime you wish to backup or restore through ROM manager,
Good luck sounds like you might just be frustrated over nothing, lets hope so.
Ki113Ro
have realized since last post on this subject that as long as you don't try and instal apps 2sd script you CAN install link2sd and its working i also now realize that current kernel which is called Redbend UA has ext3/ext4 type support and since succesful install of link2sd have freed up maybe 40mb of internal memory.
I also wou.ld recommend Imbawind Adrenaline boost script v3 search xda for link to download. next thing is to deodex ROM so i can apply new jelly bean style i think. I have debranded ROM after CWM backup so can restore if needed .
Thanks to all the developers and people brave enough to risk bricking there devices because of all these people devices are getting better and
thanks to samsung and htc etc for listening to the consumer and making sure the changes others make are streamlined into there ROMs the new galaxy is much quicker than the old one Thank you.
Thanks have to go also to Google and everyone connected with the Android OS

Update your ROM, via ROM Manager (If available) and scanning through the forums, every now and again..
I use AnTuTu CPU Master free - Simple, good looking and does the job - Also I'd recommend the SiyahKernel, bei GokHanmoral (See his website: here
Download the latest kernel for your ROM, based on if it's Stock, AOSP or AOKP..

The kernel is the "boss" of the OS, which contains all the drivers and commands.
Imagine an OS (Operating System) as a company,
you have following in the OS (company):
the kernel - Boss
the shell - the office/s
the utilities - the outpost/s
The kernel is, like I said, the boss and tells which part of thecompany has to do what, at which point in time.
The shell is the office and calls everyine, making sure everything is going to plan, and delivering commands, from the kernel (boss), to the utilities and externel sources.
The utilities are your main working area, where you can interact actively with the OS and make changes to it, including changes to the UI, settings and apps (programs).
And that's how an operating system works, I hope I broke it down enough, for everyone to understand
Hope I could help!

Well, the main difference is, that they are practicly ll the same.
What most people understand as "stock" firmware, is AOSP code, released by Google, and then modified by the different manufacturers, to give their devices that typical (i.e.) Samsung look.
AOSP is the stock (unmodified and pure) Android code, that is periodicly released by Google, to maintain Android and the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).
AOKP means Android Open Kang(ed) Project, kanged code is code, taken from source, and modified, to then be made open source again.
If you take what I write/say seriously (Which you should), then "stock" which, by the way, is branded software, is only a kang, of the AOSP code, so each and every one of you, who has left their device stock, with what they got delivered with, is using a kanged Android ROM.
Hope I could help!

Your kernel version is listed in Settings -> About Device
You can download Odin from Sammobile.com/firmware, or buy Mobile Odin from the Play Store.
Mobile Odin has the abilty to auto-detect what sort of tar you want to flash, so you don't have to be an expert in those things to flash a simple kernel

Beware with overclocking, that's actually the only way a software can fry your hardware if something goes wrong.
In this case, the warranty will definitly not work.
Either you have modified your device and won't get OTA, you need to go through odin. I think only rooting allows you to get them through kies though.
OR
you have to (triangle away and) go back to a stock rom and you will have update through OTA
So u mean i needa unroot my device???

Wrong - Any modification to the device will "tur off" the ability to Update OTA..
You can update via CWM, TWRP, Odin, Mobile Odin, ADB and so.. And waranty will work in some cases, if you have bought your phone in a shop - it won't work, if you have a contract, just send it in and request a new one..

OK let's clarify something, someone here is giving bad advice.
1.) Don't use ROM manager to flash ROMs or anything else, it can cause issues.
Use it to download them but flash them via your recovery (cwm, twrp etc.) Or with mobile Odin.
2.) If you root your device then it will show as system modified and stop you getting OTAs, we don't care about OTAs on xda, we get it here to flash before 99% of people get OTAs.
3.) TL;DR about kernels: they give you control over your hardware, they allow you to overclock your CPU and GPU, undervolt them too. Also with the S3 we can alter the equaliser settings in our audio chip (Wolfson, great hardware)
Don't worry about the rest, research that in your own time, but DO research it.
4.) Triangle away is an app by chain fire that removes the binary flash count in the bootloader. To simplify, Samsung inserted a mechanism besides the system modified one, that registers if we change anything in our system so if we send it back they can know if we tampered with the system.
Triangle away sets it back to zero.

Come on dude, even if you HAVE modified your device, some ROMs still have FOTA enabled, like with Update Me, ROM Manager and kitchen apps, so what you were saying was wrong - I was not insulting anyone, nor am I "Mind limited". Retarded is the word, btw.
You can use Mobile Odin, to go back to stock, but you don't need to, I'm pretty sure, that as long as the counter states the device is running stock firmware, you can still receive FOTAs.. I'm not too sure, though..
P.S. The OP didn't say he's running stock (rooted/modified) firmware, did he?
Btw, wat is OP?? And is it gd for me to flash cm10 or should i just wait for JB 4.2?? if yes, when and where can I find the jb 4.2 file or package (idk wat its called)And wats the difference between using mobile odin and the original odin that i used before to flash jb 4.1.1??

OP is original post, as in first post in a thread.
As for cm10 well you can always flash it if you want to and when/if 4.2 official drops then you can just flash that, you are never stuck on one or the other.
You can download firmwares from samfirmware.com.
You need a PC/laptop to use Odin, mobile Odin is an app on your phone with the same functionality as Odin.
Its really convenient.

Custom ROM != stock ROM when it comes to OTAs, stop trying to cover your tracks by twisting what was said.
On stock and rooted = no OTAs.
Custom ROMs with OTAs means you can get updates of that custom ROM only and they aren't even real OTAs, it just downloads the full firmware as opposed to the deltas.
The jury is still out on whether or not you are "mind limited" or "retarded" as you said yourself.

Even though you are posting in the wrong section I will answer this for you once.
You can make a nandroid backup. By making a nandroid backup you basically backup your whole system that is currently installed on your phone. The Nandroid backup takes an image of your phone the way it is which can be restored later. I highly recommend you to do this every time you want to install a new ROM. Just in case anything goes wrong you will always be able to restore your nandroid backup and you're having a working phone in no-time again.
Thnxx and sorry for posting in the wrong secrion cuz my question was related to a rom i thought it would match here ..

Might i also add to make a nandroid backup you require a modded recovery for your phone.
The most stable and popular one is surely cwm (clockworkmod).
Though i also suggest philz touch recovery for galaxy s3 only because it can compress much more nandroid backups than cwm, plus it has some other cool features.
Im telling you because from your original post i can tell you probably never used a recovery.
You can find VERY easy and trustworthy guides online to do set up a recovery on your cell easily, so i'll let you search for your self, but if you want the absolute fastest way to get cwm recovery on your phone just install the app called rom manager from the play store. from there it is pretty much straightforward and simple....

Please could you take the time to read General > Sticky Roll-up thread > Understanding the basics before rooting? I have laid out the answer to hopefully, pretty much any "root" question you may have.

Anything that is lost after a factory reset, is also lost if you nandroid over it.
You can make a full nandroid backup with philz recovery.

I see my friend, how will I know if it is the proper custom roon that I'm going to use? how I can prevent my phone of getting brick?
Just type "list of custom roms for **your phone model** " in google.
This list varies for each and every model, brand, motherboard specifications etc.
Be carefull. I hard bricked my phone once. Now its not even switching on. I have thrown it in dust-bin,it became useless

Now if there are no instructions, you usually just have to flash it and then reboot.
i have a problem in transferring files from phone storage to sd cards

Thanks a lot my friend, anyway how i can install link2sd.apk if i cant run my phone because it is in the system recovery mode? will it run in the system recovery mode if i will download it in my sd card? thanks again
No..it wont work like that buddy!
&
Sorry man! Your stock rom was collapsed.....i got the same situation(error signature) with my samsung galaxy tab. Then i came to know that it was soft bricked.
Then i kept my phone in download mode and flashed stock rom(available in official samsung site) through Odin software using my laptop. Then is worked like before
So now what you do is......
Open google..and search for "How to soft unbrick **your phone model** "
You may find something which is helpfull.

Can you access your normal launcher and all that or is the recovery the only thing that works?
