Hey everyone, I have a quick easy question:
I'm running Paranoid Android 2.23, and Dagr8's Kernel.
If I make a backup, and try switching to another rom, briefly, can I simply restore my backup and have everything as it was? Or will I need to flash the rom / kernel again and then do a restore?
(So basically I wanna go from paranoid android, to a flappjaxxx rom, if I don't like the flappjaxxx rom, can I easily just restore back to my paranoid android rom?)

Have to flash the rom again, that rom isn't supported any more here, you may want to find where he is now and make sure

If he made a backup using twrp he can simply restore the rom safely. No need to flash again.

Incorrect....and incorrect.
A nandroid will do the job. However, if you're using TWRP, make sure you backup all partitions. I've seen cases where .android_secure gets deleted, requiring a large number of apps to be reinstalled. If you're using CWM there should be any issues.

Yeah, sorry, misread that. Thought he was just switching kernels. Nandroid backup is the quickest way to do it. I'll let you know, I try most roms. His is very smooth, fast and basic. My phone heated up very quickly with it. It is also not being developed anymore.

Nope, you can wipe cache/dalvik and flash 1.0.
And the rom wipes the caches upon flash so you don't even really need to do that, but its a good habit to get into.

If you look on the mean rom thread, the developer of that rom has an installation posted for how to install each update. It also helps to ask questions in that thread, because you get a lot of users of that rom to answer questions like this, and it is a good community. I hope I have helped.

Little off topic but... I know you can use 'MyBackup Root' to backup your homescreens. Not something I make a habit of doing but it does work. You'll have to re add your widgets but it will restore most everything else.

You can back it up in titanium backup. It is a free app in the play store. Just back up [DESKTOP] HTC sense. If you are using a third party launcher then back up the app in titanium back up.

If you're flashing mean rom on top, all you need to do is dirty flash (no wiping) and all your apps, setup and even launcher/layout will be the same

So I've been reading through the forums in search of this answer but I've been unable to find a definite one. I want to try epinters cm10 but if I don't like it, is it safe to flash back neutrinos cm7 using CWM recovery? Will I brick my phone by doing this?
Thanks!

The answer to your question is yes. But the best way to return is by restoring the nandroid backup you will create before trying CM10 (or any other ROM). No brick fears unless you try to flash an sbf (which you should never do).

You only have to backup your current rom if you think you might want to go back.
Always backup before installing new roms, or making any major changes, or even when you have your current rom set up perfectly. Using rom manager makes it easier because you can name them whatever you want. You can never have too many backups!

For all the lazy kids out there, always create a Nandroid before going to any new ROM.
It's only one extra step, and it beats flashing with a SBF and "hoping" for the best...

This.
Also, you should make a backup of your EFS, just in case. It contains very valuable information of your device such as IMEI and other stuff, and it's not recoverable without a proper Backup or Sammy's help in the rare event that it gets screwed. Look for a piece of software called EFS PRO on this forum. I'd like to give you the proper url, but I'm kind of busy in a crappy PC at work.
And make sure you use a i9300 compatible ROM, just wanted to make it clear because I've seen people with variants (like US) trying to flash a i9300 ROM and get it pretty messy.
Stock ROMs are fairly easy for starters.
Good luck!.-
PS: When using ODIN make sure that you don't have Re-Partition selected. I repeat, it must be NOT CHECKED. Or you'll be DOOMED.-
Hi
Why don’t you try with Omega first.
There's a flashing guide in post #4

Personal I prefer AOSP ROMs with MIUI.
Good luck
Edit: just make sure you do a nandroid backup. Always good to have a backup to go back to if things don't go as hoped. Have saved me many times.

OK, this has been said a few times, titanium backup is only good to use on the same base rom... Going from ICS to JB rom means there are going to be lots of FC's and other problems... I guess, probably will be a radio issue. Some one please guide me how to Flash and update to custom Jelly bean Roms.

Right here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2147095
I'm on 4.2.2 and had to change kernel in order to have call audio. Flappjaxxx kernel is another one you could try, but it didn't work well for me.
I'm using Feb 29 build of the kernel which in the forum for my current ROM had the most feedback.
Basically just download the kernel, put it on root of sd card and boot into recovery. Wipe cache and then install zip from sd and choose kernel. When done reboot. Always make a backup just in case
This boot will take longer than usual. Don't worry. When booted, it will say something like "upgrading android" or something
After that, enjoy.
Someone please correct me if I am wrong at any point! I am fairly certain that ^ those steps are correct, but just in case
And lastly, I hope this doesn't become a "best kernel thread" try a few out if you aren't sure and see which one works best for you. I just recommend 4aces because it worked for me

Ok. I have a problem here. phone reboots when i touch turn on usb connection, any idea? want to flash chris kernel
That is very common for JB ROMs actually. Had that on my old phone as well... Trying to remember what I did Try a different kernel and see if that works any. I don't think it happens to me anymore but it did before.
I'm gonna spend some time searching and see what that yields. I know you can boot into recovery and enable USB transfer that way. It's supposed to be faster because it bypasses a few firmware components. But either way, that is a nuisance.
Okay, try going Settings->Storage->(Menu soft key)->USB options
From here you should be able to enable mass storage, or if that reboots on you like before, try ticking MTP. Maybe try checking developer options and see if USB debugging is enabled or not. Unfortunately I don't know which to have ticked and which ones not
Anyone? Cuz right now all of mine are unchecked (and that doesn't sound right)

Rebooted into (PhilZ) CWM and wiped dalvik and cache and rebooted....still boot loop. Don't want to factory reset as I'll delete all my apps and settings which kinda defeats the purpose of a nandroid.
The nandroid I tried to restore was a rooted debloated 4.1.2 firmware.....any ideas anyone?

Nandroid by default doesn't backup /preload partition, so you must include that in your nandroid backup to avoid bootloop in newer firmware versions. Especially if you are jumping around roms.

Guess you will have to upgrade your cwm, I use 6.0.2.9 and it gives the option to include the /preload in misc.

Doesn't jeboo have a twrp recovery? Therefore wouldn't it have a problem trying to restore a cwm backup?
