Hello XDA,
it's it's time for me to root my EVO3D.
I'm actually pretty happy with HTC's widgets and the setup I have now, but the phone is sluggish and I can't stand Sprint's apps that show up every time I upgrade.
I rooted my old phone in the past (it was an HTC hero) successfully with cyanogen, but the last time I checked this mod doesn't exist for the 3D, at least not a stable one. I liked cyanogen because it was really well balanced, slick and fast. I need something as transparent as possible. I'd also like to be able to use the 3D camera if possible, but if I have to give it up for a really good mod, I don't really mind.
The most important thing for me is tethering. I am about to get the new Chromebook and I need it to recognize the phone and tether through it. Does anyone here have any experience with it? I'm using EasyTether for now which has been really good to me, but there's no way to install it to a chromebook without some development patch which I don't think I want to apply right off the box.
So, what do you guys suggest? What is a fast Mod? I would def. need the Google App package, but I really don't need any car-related set up or apps (I live in NYC) and I don't care about radio or sports TV or any of the other Sprintcrap.

You should be able to use the Wi-Fi Tether app from the Play Store except on Sense 4.x ROM's if you are rooted, and if not you can try FoxFi in bluetooth mode (wi-fi is not supported on the Evo 3D). ClockworkMod Tether is similar to Easy Tether and doesn't require root, but again there are no drivers to support the Chromebook as a client.

Ramjet,
Which Rom would you suggest then? There are a couple of choices and I'm just not sure where to begin. Just to be clear, I don't need the phone to pick up Wi Fi, as the chromebook can do it itself; I need to be able to use the dataplan, preferably with the usb cable because it keeps the phone charged for longer periods.
Thanks!

The problem is finding the drivers for your Chromebook to use a USB tethering program. As long as your phone is rooted you can use Wi-Fi Tether with your phone connected via USB to charge, and even use it as an access point for other devices at the same time should the need arise.
Regarding the ROM, most 3.6 Sense ROM's run Wi-Fi Tether fine, but if you want to narrow it down you can be the guinea pig for our new ROM Information Thread.

Well I now rooted my phone and I'm trying to play with the wifi tether, but my chromebook won't connect. I see it under networks and it tries to connect, but can't. Any suggestions?

Okay. My wife is very guarding over her beloved Eris, even though I have rooted it. She dare not let me wipe it and put a new ROM on it that would obviously give her USB tether capability. Therein lies my problem. She's used up the trial time on PDANet and would use up EasyTether's trial in no time. So... How can I either get her phone to do wired tether without reloading it, or completely get it back to the way it is now with the current UI and data with a ROM that provides USB Tether capability?

I think you can just install the tether software since you are rooted.

Yes, what he said. Just google for either "Android Wired Tether" or "Android Wireless Tether" (or both!), without the quotes, and you'll find the free tethering apps. Sometimes I've had trouble finding them on the market. If you try, look for "Wired Tethering for Root". Otherwise, you'll have to download them in a browser and move them to the SD card and use Astro File Manager to install the apk.
Deleted, duplicate.
Does anyone manage to get USB tether working using any one of the ROM?
This was touched on briefly in another thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842842), but mostly on wifi tether, and I have not seen any recent posts on this topic. I want to use the gtablet for school and work and USB tethering would be an absolute necessity; any help and assistance on this would be most apprecative.
There are only drivers for Windows, Mac and Linux for USB tether, so doubtful it would work. I tried it anyway, even though I knew the result. Still can not get wifi tether to work.

Sorry, I've been swamped last few days... well the last month actually... but Send me your current /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf file as I can use your current saved networks to build you a working set of files for wifi tether... I'll PM you my email in case I didn't already...
I'm not sure what usb host support has been built so far. My understanding is that in theory the linux network driver should be able to be used in android with some work ofcourse.
I'm not going to root my Gtablet right away so I'll have to wait to see if someone figures out how to wire/wireless tether while it's stock. My rooted Droid 1 is getting bored. LOL

I know this is an old thread, I was wondering if anyone has had any luck with USB tethering at all.
+1 interest in this, or bluetooth tethering. My company is PCI compliant and has wifi blockers all over the building
does ad-hoc run over the same frequencies as wifi?
Client devices that use ad-hoc wifi are licensed for the same FCC spectrum as devices that only use infrastructure wifi, so that makes me assume they use the same frequencies.
I'm only aware of two tethering solutions on android yet, but i'm a noob so there may be more:
1) the wpa supplicant patch. This allows the Android device to tether as a client to another adhoc wifi sharing device.
2) pdanet. This allows the Android device to tether as a server to another non-android client, via bluetooth or USB.
So far, nothing I've seen supports USB tethering client on Android. For now, with your use case I'd recommend a more mature OS like WinXP. With the right software, WinXP can serve as a USB tether client to most modern phones.
Bump...
Would like to be able to USB tether when honeycomb comes out. But would be awesome if it happened earlier.
second that request. USB tethering is so much easier than WiFi hotspotting, not to mention it's free with my current T-mobile plan
Same here. I use ICS via USB tethering from my HTC Touch Diamond to my PC and will get a gTablet when I can use it similarly as a client.
i second this
All of us married folk who are pushed for both time and money (but are still tech adventurous) would love some clear directions (or a script or app) for tethering to their DUN capable regular phones by either BT or USB.
Many thanks in advance to whoever takes up the challenge...
G tablet currently running vegan beta5.1
I concur on this. I use PDAnet with my original droid to tether to laptop. Unfortunately, PDAnet can't be used on Vegan Ginger which I am running on my gTab. Any help would be much appreciated!

From my searching thru Google I found out that the original Droid can bluetooth tether to the Xoom. Not to sure what gives the ability for that to happen but it works. If it's code specific then maybe some tinkering with that might get it to work but if it's hardware specific..again I'm just throwing it out there.
BT tethering is very doable depending on your phone. I use PDANET on my Droid X.
For some deeper info (including a script to get it started on the G-Tab) Look here:

Does any TBolt rom support it?
I think I've read about the stock one is the only one to support it after root.
Is it just something missing in these roms or is it something else?
I've tried these on some of the BAMF and a few other roms, but I haven't found one that works yet.
yeah i haven't found one either. the wired tether app doesn't seem to work for me. i am now on synergy 3.0 nightly and have to use wireless tether.
The wired tether app only works after you have downloaded HTCsync for your pc. Windows needs the modem drivers located in that file to properly connect to your phone.
Or you can download PDAnet/EasyTether and they basically do the same thing.

this isn't the case. my Evo (work phone) works just fine wired tethering, but my thunderbolt does not.
pdanet/easytether isn't free if i want to use secure sites... I'm technically okay for paying for the software, but I'd rather not when there are free resources like this out there that do indeed work on other devices.
Doesn't CM7 have wired tether? I could be wrong, no matter how many times I try I always end up back with Sense. But it seems like I remember it does, if you don't mind an AOSP ROM that is.
Ok apparently the drivers are part of the VZW software that tries to install whenever you connect the phone. It didnt appear to install any software to my pc, just the drivers necessary for the integrated wired tether mode to work. I didnt see any popups or warnings about incurring additional charges for doing this, so I assume it's ok.

+1. I've been using it this morning. No other apps needed. It even works with my Xoom wifi.
CM7 has Wireless Tethering... I've never tried to use the wired, but I did test wireless this past weekend.
It's been about two weeks, still can't tether! I've tried every wifi tether app I can download, every beta in the googlecode directory. I am rooted, I have checked. I have two more weeks, then I'll go back to my palm pre and not have problems. Tether is the one must have. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!
Get the "root checker" app from the market, run it.
VERIFY that you are rooted....then try wireless tether 3.0 or above.
I am having the same problem - continually get an error with the Wireless tether app when installed saying that access is not granted.
I have run root checker and it says I'm rooted. I try to connect and it just never seems to connect - and then my wireless connection on my laptop has to be turned off and then back on to function at all - its like the ad-hoc network just doesn't want to work on my phone. I have also tried various other tethering applications to no avail.

thanks, that's one of the first things I did, just to be sure. I have tried each of the betas, including the latest (beta5) that just came out. I have tried tethering to my laptop (win7), my touchpad, and my hackintosh dual boot, both the windows 7 and osx side. None of them can connect. Whenever I start the wifi tether app, I do get the Access control denied error, but I assume everyone is getting that due to the kernel?
Make sure you guys have the superuser app installed. You can get it in the market.
Already installed.
From what I've read on support pages of tether apps, they haven't included the drivers for the Photon so rooted devices will only give you adhoc tethering. Some devices can't make an adhoc connection, such as android tablets.
Makes sense to me. I'm new to Android, is this something (the drivers) that will eventually be incorporated into the various wifi tether applications as the phone is "out" longer?

It's not always the case. It's completely up to the developers of those apps to. There are plenty of phones that have been out much longer than the Photon that aren't yet supported.

I've tried searching xbox tether on Rezound forum and can't find any.. I'm on stock rooted s-on rebooted and want to know if anyone has successfully tethered the Rezound to their xbox and what apps work best.. I've read that Clean Rom has it but can I simply put it in myself?
Thanks for any help.

There are two ways you can go about this. If you want to tether via USB then I would go with easy tether from the play store. It costs ten bucks but it works flawlessly.
Since you are rooted you can get wireless tether straight from google. If you get the latest version, which I believe is beta 14, you should be able to connect your Xbox. If you choose this route make sure you pick Samsung galaxy CDMA in the device profile and click the routing fix box in settings or it won't work.
Thanks dabomb ill test out the beta14 tonight
you can try this app (Attatched). this tether app is the one the comes pre-installed on most Roms. i just extracted a copy of it from my phone to share it.
I've enabled routing fix and set to nexus cdma but my xbox doesn't seem to find it. Can I enable wifi encryption? Or should I unchecked? How close do I have to be for it to pick up? This is my first time tethering thanks
Wifi tether works great if you're rooted. I highly recommend that one.

There's a thread in the dev section here that tells you how to get it working. You need a patched tethering app and if you're on GB you need to flash a zip in recovery
Or you can use "Connectify" to turn your PC into a Router. when you turn on Connectify, you can go into another room or downstairs and connect through wifi to your PC from any Wifi Device.
you can probably Tether From your phone to your PC, then use Connectify to start a Hotspot on your PC which would be using the Internet from your phone and your Xbox could Pickup the Hotspot from your PC.
Did I hear wrong or is it true that wireless online gameplay has more lag than a wired connection?

Thanks for all the help, appreciated it. Dunno about lag but Ive read in some forums that online gameplay takes about 10-20mg an hour
