Hi guys,
I recently got a Galaxy S3 here in the UK, and the phone is great except for the battery life on idle. I downloaded BetterBatteryStats and after various days seeing what was eating away at my battery I've narrowed it down to...

I read that it's to do with the router's DHCP settings, constantly assigning a new IP address to the phone, so I went ahead as suggested and set a static IP address (192.168.1.9), which was what the router had originally set.
However as you can see even with the Static IP set, the wakelock is still showing, and the count keeps climbing (in fact, if I constantly refresh BBS, it goes up in count every 10 seconds or so).
Has anyone got any suggestions? Between this and also PowerManagerService it's eating my battery. I read about PowerManagerService and apparently this is the fix...
First, remove your battery for a couple minutes (not just a restart, physically remove it).
Then, prior to unplugging your phone, always turn the screen on (unlock it first too), and THEN unplug it. There is a pretty solid consensus and various websites that this prevents the issue you are talking about.
If you forget, and the problem comes up again, you can start again with the battery removal.
If these steps fail, it could be an application causing the problem.

Will try that and see what happens, but the wlan_rx_wake is the one that's causing me most grief.
Thanks
Any ideas guys? Come on you're all a clever bunch!

i have the same wakelock. please help us out some one
This is my main wakelock as well, im running Temaseks cm10 build, ive tried Temaseks + siyah kernels but the wlan_rx_wake persists as the main wake lock. {Since boot 15h 31m, wlan_rx_wake is 1h 35m}
There are custom kernels that may alleviate this problem somewhat. Some networks (due to router configuration or chatty hosts on that network) are chatty with excessive multicast traffic. The phone repeatedly wakes up temporarily to look at this traffic, often unnecessarily. There are several kernels that have a multicast filter patch to reduce these wlan wakelocks (credit to xda developer entropy512). Siyah and some other kernels have this patch applied. It's worth a shot to see if it helps.
Edit: just read niczoom's comment, so maybe my post is moot.
Ok, I've managed to sort it out by using a static IP on my router. It's caused by DHCP. It constantly refreshes your phones IP address. Now it's deleted_wake_locks that is high up though...

I also have a static IP which I setup weeks ago after reading that it would alleviate the problem. From memory it seemed to fix the issue of wlan_rx_wake when I first set it up, but somehow over the past few weeks it has reappeared ?? Whether it is from constantly flashing Temaseks CM10 Roms each day or so and trying a mix of kernels .... who knows...?
Regarding deleted_wake_locks, I too have had them in the past week or so! From memory I think it was when I tried using Temaseks kernel (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1797109&page=406). Can win either way either wlan or deleted wakelocks !!!

I had issues with EVERYROM and with EVERY KERNEL. No matter what I did the wifi would crash here and there. I could browse the internet with little to no issue, but if i went to use the market or watch youtube, i would have TONS of issues. Before changing these settings I couldnt watch youtube without a timeout for more than 10 seconds (sometimes a video might have gone for 30 sec before a timeout). The weird thing was my other two android devices and my two laptops both work PERFECT, no issues, but the nook just HATED my wireless. So i figured it was on the nooks end, as i can tell now, it was not...
Im posting screenshots of my router settings, I understand not everyone is using DD-WRT, but i figure each router firmware has similar settings just in different places.
I posted ALL my settings to show its not an issue with security, as I have mine with NO SSID broadcast, Mac filtering (Can Only Access) and WPA Personal 2 Mixed and the only thing that was stopping it from working were the settings on the advanced page.
Im going to say it was likely
Afterburner
or
Frame burst (Pretty sure this is the settings that specifically caused the issues)
or
CTS Protection Mode
My Wireless Settings
My Wireless Security settings
My mac address filtering
The advanced settings, the ones that matter
Hope this helps anyone that has the same issue. I couldnt get the internet to work reliably on ANY rom, and read a bunch of threads regarding this issue and none of them fixed my problem.
***EDIT***
The above FIXED my issues with WIFI. Just clarifying incase the thread title didn't make sense. I guess I didn't post anywhere in the thread that this is a FIX and not a problem. Thanks!
I'd flash it back to 1.2 stock and see if it still has problems. If it does then return it for a new/different one as it's probably a hardware issue. I have had no wifi problems on multiple cm nightlies w the 6/13 or 6/18 kernels. That said I dont OC past 1000, dont have step 1 lower than 300 and use wpa1 with tkip.
I posted this because the above fixed my issues completely. It works 100% perfect now.

This is probably just a particular issue with your routers chipset, you should post exactly which router you have. I am running DD-WRT v24-sp2 on an ASUS RT-N16 and my advanced wireless settings are at the default options and my Nook has Zero issues.
One setting I have seen cause problems is having a mixed authentication mode, I've had greater compatibly choosing by choosing one or the other AES or TKIP...
It's a wrt-54g. I only posted this because I read other threads of issues and figured id post this so some can try.

There are a bunch of different WRT-54G's, which version number? It makes a huge difference http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linksys_WRT54G_series#Hardware_and_revisions
Maybe we'll find a correlation. My Nook hasn't played nice with about 20% of routers I've tried to connect to, where it tries to connect but gets stuck in a "loop" of scanning/connecting...
It's a wrt-54gl. It's the L model.
I've pretty much narrowed it down to that frame burst setting.
Sent from my NookColor using XDA Premium App
The WRT54GL is a great router... the frame burst option isn't enabled by default and that's for a good reason from what Wikipedia has to say about it:
"However, their use can also result in unbalanced allocation of airtime where there are a mix of clients with and without Frame-Bursting. In such cases, the inter-frame wait periods cause unsupported stations to wait longer for service availability, and to receive less data transfer throughput. Therefore, it is not recommended for more than 2-3 wireless clients to use frame-bursting as the negative effects can adversely affect the throughput for all clients."
I reset the router twice. its a default setting for DD-WRT I'm assuming.

I'll point out that if you have a N router.
disabling WMM makes your router impotent as hell and you'll connect a G speeds.
Yeah, CTS was the only option on Auto, the rest were disabled here.. But what the heck, I'll disable CTS.
I haven't had much trouble on wifi since moving to the .32 kernel anyway.
Now, I know that this rom is still in an early Alpha stage, but as a test I left it on, unplugged with wifi on, not connecte (having that irritating bug where it won't connect to anything), to see how long the battery lasts, and I noticed 2 things.

A. Should the battery be draining this quick, when it was not used for the 24 hours which it lasted on battery? I mean, no apps were running, and it wasn't even connected to wifi, I usually leave wifi on on my phone by an accident and I don't notice it draining the battery that quick...(my only explenation although I dunno if it's right, is that while it's not connected and there are networks that it knows and can connect to in range, that it is constantly TRYING to connect, and thus draining the battery?
B. It says that it was constantly awake, but if you look below, the screen was turned on like, 2 or three times throughout the day?
Any ideas about these? Anyone know a fix for wifi? I tried wifi fixer from the market, but it didn't work (looks like all it does is reset the wifi) (and please don't suggest the changing channel thing on the router, cause I can't do that in college). Also, calendar won't sync with my email, says sync is down, try again later, and in accounts and settings, it doesn't say sync Calendar, it says sync com.android.calendar...? I tried wiping dalvik cache and reinstalled GAPPS V11...but nothing, still won't sync
Thanks guys.

Try Fixing Permissions in CWM. If that doesn't work then wipe everything and reinstall.
what would the permissions fix be for...the calendar?
It should fix the wifi. Did you have android on your TP before ICS? If you did you might of installed it over one another which may lead to problems. Best bet is to backup, wipe everything, and reinstall. I currently have ICS on my TP and its golden! Never had wifi problems and use my Calender daily.
Re: Your battery life. If you check your process list with top from a console or with all options on in system tuner, do you see anything pegging the CPU? I had an odd issue where netd was consuming loads of resources (50-90% constantly on one core) and it was killing the battery like that and making the device slower. I replaced that daemon with the same file from CM7 and stopped having issues.
Check the last few pages of the CM9 thread in the dev section for more details.

Edit, here's my battery life for a similar period with wifi on.
Weird tapatalk bug. Ignore.
Scroll down the page to the link for gapps fixer, it should fix your calendar problem.

I'll try this tonight, also, @mkosem, your screen isn't always "awake", mine is despite the fact it wasn't used for the full day!

I'm pretty sure awake and screen on are different things. I was having some nasty idle issues before I replaced netd though. I don't recall if it was staying awake like that, but one core was pegged constantly at >=50%.

I've seen this suggestion multiple times with no real explanation as to why this fixes the wifi.
I did this multiple times across multiple clean installs. It did not fix the Wifi for me.
Does anyone know why this is being suggested as a way to fix wifi??

Tried that and did nothing. Changing the router channel to 4 fixed it though. Battery life still isn't great though. Gonna try that netd thing later

Ever since I started trying the various flavor of OTA ICS, I've noticed one very significant issue. My WiFi connection goes down during the night, and I don't get emails. I use "push" email, so there needs to be a network connection.
Yesterday, I updated to the latest release 4.03.605.2, and ran a test. I set one of my boxes to ping the phone every 5 minutes overnight. It turns out that the phone stopped responding at 12:15 AM, responded for 15 minutes at about 2:55 (when I woke up and checked the phone), stopped responding 15 minutes later, then started responding by itself at 7 AM. I have the screen lock timeout set for 15 minutes, so it appeared that there was some process which would shut down wifi between midnight and 7 AM, if the screen was locked.
That's just plain idiotic. After basic phone functions, email is the most important feature of a smartphone, and HTC made it utterly unreliable!
Quick Google search, and this is apparently a known issue on some HTC phones, although searching on this forum only shows a few mentions of similar wifi issues.
Here's a thread about this issue on the One X.
It appears there's a solution. Here's more info on the problem, and mention that there's a pay app, SmartSync Disabler in the Play Store. I plan to try this tonight to see if it works on the Rezound.
HTC owes me $1.77.
I am assuming that you have played with the advanced wifi settings to keep wifi on during sleep?
settings>wifi then press menu button then advanced
I've also tried playing with the hidden power menu options but it caused my wifi not to turn back whenever I woke up the phone. Pain in the ass having to keep turning it back on all the time.
Yeah, um. Easily corrected.

Post a screen shot of your WiFi advance settings just for the hell of it. All android phones(ones i had) keep WiFi on after the screen is locked/off (Always ON) by default.
If you have already tried this then..... Kernel & kernel Modules control Wifi functions so maybe try going back to gingerbread and checking if the problem persist. If not then ICS don't likey you phone.
For those who can't be bothered to read the linked threads, this issue is related to a new "feature" HTC has added to ICS, called "SmartSync." It only has effect from midnight to 7 AM local time. During that time, this untenable feature will disable data connections. Waking up your phone will cause it to reconnect, but 15 minutes after the screen goes off, it will disconnect again. Some people have reported that it doesn't happen if you have the charger connected.
There's a reason the app I linked to in the OP exists, it's because this issue can't be resolved by changing any of the provided settings. Here's another app which tries to fix it in a different way.
It makes no difference if you have set WiFi to "always on," it still turns it off. If you use push email or messaging (like GTalk), you won't get messages during the night, unless you wake the phone yourself. It's also not just WiFi - if it were, you'd get push emails through 3G/4G, but they simply don't come through.
Here are some more threads:
HTC Incredible wifi sleep.
One S not receiving push email
One X
Evo 4G push notifications don't work
Evo 4G
Apparently, the idiots at HTC believe that no one might be sent important emails from 12-7AM, and that no one works third shift. They broke ICS with this stupid, undocumented, unconfigurable change which turns a decent phone into a piece of crap.
FYI, ViperRez has the option to disable SmartSync. Haven't seen it in any other roms, but to be fair I haven't run any other Sense roms for any length of time.
This is a sense 4 feature supposedly so if it's such a big issue ... Then don't use a sense 4 Rom....
If you get one of the disabler apps working then score one for you.

Hello Guys , I hope someone helps me over here ....
* The Catlog containing logs and My device full info and the Pictures are attached to the Post*
(galaxy J7 stock rom) So , two weeks ago while I was using my Android device it started Connecting and Disconnecting my Home wifi Internet connection (I mean by that the wifi is always On but my device keeps disconnecting from the connection and connecting again and No it is not a smart switch issue or battery save issue as there is no other wifi connections except mine )
First thing I did of course , is to see if the problem is with my router but it's not , I tried other devices.
I Fully wiped the device but the problem still occured whenever I try to access the internet (As opening google ) and I haven't installed any apps yet , I never rooted my phone before but I just Rooted NOW with CF to Catlog what's happening , Using a firewall didn't help as the apps sending the packets are google apps which I need.
I noticed on my router that my device is sending THOUSANDS of Packets and has About 1000 Active TCP connections from ports used by google service such as Google account manager (I Used network connections app) , I will put screenshots of the connections down the post .
The only way to stop the disconnecting from occuring is to factory reset my router so I have a new client with clean connection UNTIL about hours of Usage my device starts sending them thousands of packets and my router keeps disconnecting me again(Don't blame the router they are A LOT ! JUST see the pictures below)
I have warranty but the providers suck over here in my country and the only thing they can do is either factory reset (Which I already did) or change hardware parts , If they factory reset they won't notice the problem as their Company Network is most likely capable to Take up thousands of active connections (most home routers won't ) and I can't just show them a CATLOG or they would know I rooted .
So If it is possible for an expert to read my logs and tell me if it is a software issue so I can fix it or If it's a hardware issue so I can convince them to fix it , and I would pay a fee if needed or At least direct me to someone who can help for a fee .
(Wouldn't let me to attach Catlog ZIP file so here's the link just Edit it to look like a google drive Link :

Has anyone ran across an issue when changing from WIFI to mobile data that it doesn't switch? Usually when I leave my house and get into the car it doesn't switch to mobile data and I need to restart my phone for it to connect.
I'm seeing this issue, sort of. Not sure if this is the same that's happening to you though. After leaving home/wifi, the phone shows LTE or 5G but the data doesn't work (at least for some apps, I'm not sure if it's all or not).
Restarting does fix this, but for me swapping back and forth between APNs will also fix it for some reason.
Yeh happens on phone as well, as you said the only way to get reconnect is by restarting the phone, really annoying i hope sony will address this issue in the software update
I am on the latest image and I have this problem as well. I hate to be spending time with either Sony or T-Mobile support to find where the issue is. I'm not even sure if T-Mobile will care; they'll probably tell me I'm using an unsupported phone... sigh...
If this issue is not resolved and if the upcoming Galaxy phone happens to come with an sd-card slot (low chance), then I'm returning my Sony and switching to that. So far not impressed with screen brightness for sunny days outside either, and not thrilled about over sensitive or not sensitive enough, dual-personality finger print reader. So my reasons to return are starting mount up...
Oh one more observation. If I try to force connect to another network like ATT, wait for that to fail, then switch to auto-connect right after, then 5G icon comes and I get internet connectivity restored w/o having to restart. This seems to be the only workaround. Otherwise switching mobile data on/off, or switching in and out of airplane mode doesn't do anything.
And... I'm sure I can do this trick when I naturally lose service then come back into service where I only get voice, but no data. This is the thing that most pisses me off. I can anticipate switching in/out of wi-fi and apply the workaround or reboot. But I can't keep checking my phone to see if I constantly have 5G coverage, which is spotty at times to begin with T-Mobile.
Really frustrated with this here....
I had this problem, so did a search and found the same problem with older Sony phone. He said what fixed it was changing the apn settings. Wish I could find that web site again. But basically checked my default apn setting, and it was missing some info. I made a new apn with the correct T-Mobile settings and deleted the old one. And now I don't need a restart to get mobile data working. Never would have thought that would be the fix. Hope this helps

This did the trick!!! Thank you very much! I don't know if Sony was trying to be smart to include the "T-Mobile" APN in the phone, or T-Mobile pushed both "T-Mobile" and "T-Mobile US LTE" APNs over the air, but when I switched from T-Mobile to T-Mobile US LTE, the issue stopped exhibiting.
