[Q] OS services keep using my data - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all.
I know that there are a lot of similar topics, but I cannot find any solution in them.
I have a i9100 device that keep increasing my data usage.
I noticed about this a couple of weeks ago, and I tried to understand what app keeps downloading/uploading data, discharging my battery very fastly.
I downloaded MyDataManager to "keep an eye" on data usage:

I have also disabled Google Play's autoupdate.
How can I solve that problem?
Technical specifications:
- Samsung STOCK rom with JKay framework
- Kernel Siyah 4.1.5
- No extweaks
- No changed profile
If you need something else, just ask!
Thanks, anyway

did you disable auto sync?
Do you have any apps like yahoo mail or gmail which is set to auto dsownload, these are some of the programs that use data in the background.
I suggest you turn off all apps that use data and then turn them on one at a time and see what they do.

I tried to switch off auto sync, but that continous stream of data keep going on.
There is an app that allows me to keep a specific trace of apps using data?

You might check 3G Watchdog Pro which shows data usage by application.
I use free version, since I don't need details, only totals.

You could also check out droidwall and lbe privacy guard.

I bought pro version, but seems to track data usage only for apps that uses mobile data, not wifi...

You could also check out an app called Traffic Monitor. It can track app's data usage and display wifi and/or 3g.
As far as i understand, some apps cannot simply be monitored as they go through "System"

Possibly got crapware/spam installed on phone!

Hello!
I've just found out that I've possibly got some sort of app that is uploading crap? all the time!
For a couple of days ago, in Android Market there was some strange russian app that I've found in my installed list! There was only a "update" button.
I have never installed something like this, or anything like this. Just flashed CheckRom v6 a few days earlier, and were impressed with battery and overall speed.
In the comments for this app, I saw that loots of Galaxy S2 users from Norway also had got this app without doing nothing!
A couple of days later google removed it.
Since then my battery has been draining quite a lot, and today I just realized that the phone is uploading almost all the time. It makes sense, because yesterday I received a mail from my self with spam. The email was sent to a lot of my friends as well.
NOT GOOD!
How could I detect which process that is doing this? Can't find anything suspicious in the app-list, or in Titanium Backup.
Is there an app who can show what the phone does over the network connection, maybe?
Would love to get this sorted out, without reinstalling the rom, as I don't have a backup
Try freezing Samsung's Social Hub app with titanium backup as that might solve the problem.

I've not had it appear for about 48/60 hours.. it's weird that you're still getting it in the updates list. Try and clear your Market cache - Settings -> Applications -> All -> Market -> Clear Cache

Have already done that since I installed Checkrom.

It's gone from my updates list, thankfully! But I suspect that something got installed anyway. I have full control of every app on the phone (not that many in fact) so they should not use the internet connection at all!
Thanks for the link, though Good to read something about this strange case!
install trustgo ad away and adway it will kill almost all ads an apps tht link to ad servers,,,,,cheeeerz
I had this problem last year just after getting my S2, and ended up wiping phone to be sure it was gone. I'm pretty sure I complained to google at the time but don't have any record of it.
It was called MTC back then, here's the record of the install.

Android OS and Battery Life

Does anyone have any clue why "Android OS" and "Google Services" are taking up so much of my battery? I have only used my phone for periodic texting during the day, I reboot it every morning, and I have location services all disabled in Google Maps.
I did a full wipe and reinstall of Beans 17, I have 72 apps installed, pretty much nothing has changed on my phone but within the last week or two my battery life has been getting worse and worse. Does anyone have any thoughts?

My guess is it could be one of those 72 apps you got. Maybe there was an update for one of them and is now causing battery drain.

Check what apps are running under manage apps/running. Stop any services running in the background that you dont need manually. There's probably something there...
I flash ALOT ...and also yes.

I try to limit myself to the number of apps I have just for this reason, and I reboot my phone every morning so any apps I use aren't always running in the background. I didn't launch any apps other than Google Play Music, stock SMS app, and Foursquare. I really have no idea why the phone isn't going to sleep for half the time it's on battery.

Try a different kernel. I was using saber kernel when I was on beans and I was getting pretty good battery life.
Did you install any wakelock mods? Also use BetterBatteryStats will give you the exact cause

I'm on the Beans kernel, I'll give that a shot. I'll also try disabling Google Now to see if maybe that's what's causing it.

I had an issue with my phone app preventing my phone from entering into deep sleep mode, once I cleared the data, the problem went away. So have you tried clearing the google services data?
UPDATED.....
For those of you who are experiencing your google services draining your battery with all location tracking features turned off on your device, there is a play store update date called 4.1.10 that will replace 4.1.6 that has location bug battery draining issue. In my particular case it is the nlp wakelock service that is constantly running, which falls within the google services.
The download can be obtained from Android Police website http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/05...-store-4-1-10/. You can simply install this apk file through the normal installation process of install apps.
I think its Google music. Ever since the update it has been a problem for me. Make sure when you aren't using it you kill it. For some reason it uses a lot more battery than spotify. I stream music 8 to 10 hours a day so I feel the pain when my battery takes a hit.

Very Troublesome Data Usage during Tether

I'm running CM 10.1.2-spyder. Having a really odd (for me) tethering data usage issue. As you can see from the pictures, any time I used my RAZR for tethering Android OS will use data equivalent to over 100% of tethering data. In every screenshot you see, tethering data makes up 92% or more of Android OS data usage. Always above 92% and most are closer to 97-98%.
Essentially, when I tether it causes Android OS to use almost the exact same amount of data used by tether, by itself.
Disturbed with the high Android OS usage, several days ago I turned App Data sync off as well as google's backup option, because I've experienced that issue in the past. I also turned if off on the device I tether to - Nexus 7. Well, that made no difference. Android OS isn't a problem unless I'm tethering - then it becomes a huge problem.
I haven't found an issue similar to this in any of my google searches so far. Might anyone know what's causing this?

On what I've read you are tethering to your tablet, right? The amount of data could come from both - your tablet including background sync + surfing, and you Razr with its background sync. Then you turned sync off and the amount was almost the same? Sync was turned off on both devices?
Well, seems you have to track your apps by using a data monitor app. And one more thing I remember: Have you installed Adblock Plus app on one or both of your devices? Adblock Plus can EAT your data and is always sending information about you and your "behavior" to its home servers. If you are using it, better remove it immediately. I cannot find these infos in English, only a smaller discussion about it: https://adblockplus.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15923

Yes, I am tethering only to my tablet. Background APP DATA sync is turned off on both devices. Other syncs remain such as calendar, chrome, gmail, play music, etc. I wonder sometimes if Play Music is the culprit since it's such a data hog, but as far as I know it should create it's own entry in the Data Usage screen.
I do not have Adblock Plus. Any recommendations on a data monitor app?
Well, it appears I've found my issue: http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/mobile/rLrhgZUpmIg/B3k2Y25dq0MJ
I should have been examining my tablet's Data Usage screen to see what it was using instead of only my phone. I still can't fathom why it is doubling up on the data being used by my tablet though...
Essentially, the tablet is quite likely constantly trying to OTA update to 4.3. My phone then takes that data usage and doubles it for whatever reason.

Android OS high data usage

I did some research and my Google Backup is turned off. Still, Android OS is eating away at my bandwidth. 23 MB in 7 days is a lot of data. And I dont have a data package plan on my network so that 23 MB is actually costing me a lot of money.
How do I prevent Android OS from using up so much mobile data?
I am on CM 11 Temasek V48. With Googy Maxx kernel.

Its not possible to do that to Android OS.
The options isnt there.
Dun go inside. Just go to the general page of data usage and press menu. There shld be a restrict background usage or sth. And there's one thing I dun get. Why r u using 3G when u said u dun have it free?

Doing that restricts background data to all the apps. So, itd probably prevent me from getting my emails and messages. And these messages are the reason I'm using 3G even though I dont get it for free. (I leave it on 2G most of the time, until I decide to browse the web, then I switch it to 3G.)

1- Have you tried AFWall+ from the Play Store? It's a free firewall app that can restrict internet usage (wifi and/or cellular) by apps. You can select "All apps" under the WiFi column and enable the firewall. This will prevent any app from using your cellular (3g or gprs) data. Only your selected apps can access 3G/GPRS. You need root for this though.
or
2- You can simply turn off the Data from "Mobile Network" section. This way your phone will only use data if you have a wifi connection.

I faced the same problem, issue was somewhat with auto backup of data, sync of app data & people details in google account,
BUT the main culprit in my case was uTorrent application.
Even though there was no torrent added to it, i didn't even opened it,
it was using 1GB data daily on WiFi and in data usage it was coming under Android OS usage. I uninstalled it, everything went back to normal.
So try to look for such apps which eat up your data in background, it may not be an error of android OS as such.
Hope this helps, Press THANKS if it did help you
Enjoy

Ive firewalled any app that I dont want using mobile network. (Like games and stuff).
My problem actually resolved on its own. Maybe it was something from the Google side of things. .I don't see that high android OS data usage anymore.
Thanks for the tip anyway.

All options to do so are greyed out. It accumulates about 500KiB of storage and network data a day despite the actual app being disabled (and not once ever being launched ) the only thing I can do is clear the storage data.
This really bothers me.

Answer to facebook services on Andriod
I recently upgraded to the Galaxy S6, and wanted to remove any of the bloatware on the device. I disabled the FB app first, since I don't use it on any of my mobile devices. I then came across the com.facebook.appmanager and com.facebook.system applications listed under the application manager on the device. I first stopped and uninstalled the two apps, but I found that they both will update on their own over wi-fi once it's connected. I can't disable the two apps as that option is greyed out. I believe the answer to this is in the permissions of the appmanager stating that it may
1: Download files without notification
2: full network access
3: run at startup
Curiously after I have attempted to kill the app on any occasion that I'm using the device, I received an email from FB stating that they're sorry that I'm having trouble getting into my account. So, in conclusion, the apps must be gathering data (at least all configured email accounts) from the device and sending it to FB. Once FB identifies that an email address on the device matches an email account in their database, it sends the email. Looks like my next step is to root the device.

I've heard about this before in a different thread. It's something to do with a lib that's in the app. Try renaming the apk to bak see if that works, might keep the lib

And com.facebook.system
Same problem
I tried app called package disabler pro. There i searched for all com.facebook app/processes and disabled them. Now i dont see them any more in my process list in setting. The app costs littlebit but if it doesnt work, you can ask for you money back. It can also disable almost any bloatware.

Hi,
If you're not rooted, just disable it. From my experience, it has something to do with Facebook auto update. I personally doesn't use the Facebook apk itself, I once disable it but it later come back with latest version installed. So you are fine to disable com.facebook.appmanager. However, if you're rooted, better not to uninstall these Facebook related services/apk. Again, from my experience, I might be WRONG, I once uninstall them completely, my air wake up (waking up the phone by hover over your proximity sensor) doesn't work anymore.
Conclusion: you can disable them just fine.
