My Galaxy S2 has been rooted for about 2 months now and has been running on the Lightening ROM no problem, but last night when i tried to install a new ROM through CWM it wouldn't let me. I tried to install Villianrom and Cyanogen mod and both failed. Both ROM s were shown on my SD card as zip files and when i tried to move them they failed to get a signature and now when i boot into CWM neither of the ROM s show anywhere it just says NO FILES FOUND. Luckily i had a titanium backup of my Lightening ROM that i could revert to but i am puzzled as to why these ROM s wont install.
Any help would be appreciated
You are not supposed to extract them. They are supposed to be left as "zip" files.
They are getting left as zip files. All i do is download the RAR file and drag it onto sd card and there is nothing showing on the sd card i done all the necessary wipes and then when i try to select a rom off sd card this is what i get:
Android/ Attachments/ DCIM/ Download/ GOLauncherEX/ Galaxy_S_Unlock/ GoStore/ LOST.DIR/ ScreenCapture/ ShareViaWifi/ Sounds/ TitaniumBackup/ Wallpapers/ WhatsApp/ bluetooth/ burstlyImageCache/ clockworkmod/ data/ external_sd/ media/ openfeint/ samsungapps/ usbstorage/ zedge/ update.zip
But never a ROM to select from!!

is it zip or rar?

Its says that it is a WIN RAR ZIP archive. Villianrom 2.4.2 from the villian website. At first you could see the file but it failed to get a signature and when i booted out and back in to CWM there was nothing and i can no longer see any files.
(I am using linux on my pc not windows.)

What is the exact error of the "fail to get signature"? You said that you see "update.zip", is that the rom? Also, have you tried a new sd card?

Really sorry but not sure of the exact error message that came up it was late last night and its not coming up with that now. I have tried a new sd card didnt make any difference. I tried the Update.zip and all i get is (replacing stock recovery with clockwork mod recovery) and then its stuck at the screen loading bar doesnt move at all.
I have even tried it with ROM manager and left it sitting for over an hour and still didnt do anything

That means the update.zip file is ClockworkMod Recovery. Have you tried downloading the roms via Rom Manager then trying to flash them?

I have just this minute flashed it back to stock and i am about to root it again and try to install villianrom. If it doesnt work this time i am just going to leave it stock. Will let you know how it goes.
Thanks again
Hi just to let you know phone is now rooted and has villianrom installed without a glitch. Dont know what the problem was but seems to have fixed itself now.
Thanks
I also had this issue early when I got my sgs2. Here is how I fixed it. I used the "unbrick" method, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432
So flash the package in pda that contains stock kernel and rooted rom or stock rom doesn't matter, then flash the code works kernel that contains cwm again, then you can boot into cwm and flash roms again. Not sure what the root of the issue was, I just know that this fixed my problem. Make sure that if you are flashing via cwm your are installing a .zip and not a .tar or other extension as the .tar are for odin. Let me know if this doesn't fix your problem I'll be happy to help dig a little deeper although I would bet that this will fix it
Edit: looks like you got it working while I was writing this

Hi just a quick question. When i install new firmware should i have to back out and reboot system once install complete or should the phone do it by itself??
Hey guys,
been a lurker for long...
anyway, I downloaded VERTREMA ROM cz I love the ICS theme... so I rooted my SGS2 using CF-ROOT guide here
Checked it using Root Check Basic tool, and it says i have root access... so my sgs2 is rooted
so.... i tried to install this ROM using CWM app... i tried using update, chose the file, rebooted but didnt work... it says something E: can't open .....zip
What did I do wrong?
BTW, i placed the ROM inside /download/ folder (not in external SD)
Thanks,

Did you download the entire package ? it may happen if the download got interrupted mid way ......... in that case you'd have a zip file of a lesser size which can't be opened ....... try extracting the zip if you get an error you've got to redownload the package....
also ensure that the package is not read only (just incase)

ok... package is not read-only... it's -rw... so it's good....
how do i check the md5 checksum in multiupload?
i m downloading the latest version now... hope it wont get disconnected...
Find an app like MD5Summer (Windoze) to check the MD5 sum once you've downloaded the package.
Also, you can use pretty much any archive program (7Zip, IZArc, WinRar) to test the archive once you've finished downloading it.
If it comes up with fail for *any* file, don't flash that package/download it again. You might have to try downloading it from a different PC/internet connection like I did a while back when I was having probs downloading roms from home without them being corrupt.

no no... i mean before i downloaded the package.... is there a md5 checker tool so that i can compare wit the one that i downloaded?
ok i will try to download using another pc..
You have to finish downloading the rom/package before you can check the MD5 sum as there's nothing to check if you haven't downloaded it (obviously)

yes i know... what i meant was,... is there like a website that tells me the md5 cs in multiupload, so i can compare to the one that i had just finished downloading...
anyway.... thanks to the above poster.. i deleted it from my phone and then transferred the file again... and now it works.... weird,... i transferred first to my microsd, then to phone... i guess that method doesnt work... better to transfer it directly to phone...
thanks y'all!!! been a great help... very nice community here
The MD5 checksum is usually listed next to the link where you download the archive wherever you're downloading it from. Honestly, it's not that important. The most important thing is you get the entire file. And if you "test" the archive in 7Zip/IZArc/WinRar & it comes up all files OK you should be fine.
I've never had a problem flashing a rom/kernel where the test in IZArc has indicated all files contained within are OK/the archive isn't corrupt.

ic.... oh well.. thanks anyway .... ohh 1 last question.. so if i want to revert to the stock rom, i just do the same thing but with the stock rom i can download from samfirmware?
Why not download the stock rom from here ? I wouldn't know about files from Samfirmware as I've never downloaded anything from there.
If you want to go back to stock, download the rom from Intratech's thread, flash it in Odin, done. Again, test the archive integrity in IZarc or similar to make sure it's OK (given you seemed to have had some problems downloading an archive that wasn't whole or corrupted).

You haven't flashed gapps properly or your gapps zip might be corrupted. Did you verify the md5sum of the zip before flashing?

Ok, I see that jokersax hasn't provided the md5sum for the gapps v3 package, so I'm providing it here - E859E11A84C6A47FD53635E1A4E6B538
Whenever an md5sum is provided, always check the downloaded file to see if it matches. If there is a mismatch, it means the file is corrupted and you'll have to redownload it. If you're on Windows, an easy way to check md5sum is to install this program - http://sourceforge.net/projects/cyohash/
After it's installed, right click on the downloaded file, got to CyoHash>md5. It will calculate the md5sum of the file, then check the verify field and paste the md5sum of the file which is posted by the maker.
If you're on Linux, you just have to open terminal in the folder where the file is located and type 'md5sum <filename>'
Now you redownload the file, check the md5sum with the one I've posted and then flash it. Before flashing make sure you wipe everything properly (boot, system, data, cache, dalvik-cache). First flash the ROM then flash Gapps.
Just for verification purposes, I see the same MD5 on the gapps3 I use.

Are you using standard CWM recovery installed from ROM Manager or are you using jokersax's modified version? You're supposed to use his modified version for ICS and JB ROMs.

Ok, do this. Extract both the ROM and gapps zips. Open them in side by side windows and copy the files in the gapps folder into the same respective folders in the ROM folder. Then in the ROM directory, where you can see META-INF, system, boot.img and other stuff, select all of those, use 7-zip to create a zip file or Right click>Send to>Compressed zip file. Be careful not to zip the folder with the ROM name. You need to go one level inside and zip the folders there. When you open the created zip file, it should show META-INF and other stuff. You said the ROM zip is flashing fine for you but the gapps one is not, so you might as well try putting the gapps files into the ROM zip once and for all.

Hi all..
I have been using the Zip files, via CWM to update my CM10 versions.. All is well..
But I see the md5sum files that one can flash with ODIN there as well..
So my Q is: Do I need to flash the MD5's as well? If so, for what point and purpose?
Regards

Md5 files are checksums for the file you are downloading. Its basically a way to verify you have downloaded the complete file and that its the file that it says it is.
where I can download Bravia Engine files, I wanna put them in system/etc but every link directed me on iLivid page
