Hey guys, newbie here and I got some questions for y'all.
I am a longtime iPhone user, thinking about switching over to the Vibrant. I'm used to the jailbreaking/unlocking of the iphone...are similar things able to be done to the Vibrant?

Please, point me in the right direction of where I need to look. I'm so used to not paying for apps, I'd like to stick with that

Ok a few things.
Yes, you can root the vibrant and install custom roms.
On the iPhone you can install hacked apps, meaning you don't pay for them, techinically you can do the same on an Android phone by just having the apk file, however this is frowned upon because that is stealing. Why not just pay for the app? Apps are cheap on Android.
If you are a current iPhone user and if you purchase the Vibrant, YOU WILL BE UNHAPPY. I suggest you wait for the iPhone 5 which will be released in June, or wait for the dual core Android phones coming out. Do not get the original Vibrant.
Ps...the Vibrant 4G is going to be released soon. You can also get the Nexus S at best buy.
btw coming to xda and saying you don't pay for apps and you steal them was not a wise idea.
Go back to the iphone, this isn't the place for you.

OP:
Yes, you can "jailbreak", for Android it is called root, and in turn you can install custom ROMs, Kernels, and for the Vibrant "modems" (radio's on other phones). As for "free" apps, Android, unlike iOS, has TONS of free apps already. Developers tend to offer a free and paid version, main difference is the free version has ads in it. Developers actually make more money off the ad revenue (typically) than the paid versions. There are still apps that are only paid, or the full version are paid only, and to be very honest trying to get those for free is BS in my opinion, especially given the prices.
This site is FULL of all the info you need to root any Android phone and start loading custom ROMs. It is very addictive, and compared to the iPhone, it is like living in America versus living in China in terms of freedom to do what you want. In China (iPhone) you are limited in your ways, and can do as you please to an extent. Where as in America (Android) you are free to do as you please, but have a great infrastructure to help guide you and aid you in such venturers.

I am not on AT&T, I am on T-Mobile. I have had a 3G for the last 2 years, but with the new ios4.3 comes out, it will not have an update for the 3G, they are getting fazed out. So I'm moving away from the iphone for a while, may get a 4 down the road.
I understand cracked apps are illegal, a TMO CSR pointed me to this website, so if cracked apps aren't talked about here fine, I didn't know. I was just going where I was told by Tmobile to get information regarding it. Simple as that.
I have a free 2 year upgrade at TMobile right now, so I'm looking between the Vibrant and the MyTouch 4G. Right now I'm using a Blackberry Bold 9780.

Warez is not just frowned upon, but is grounds for banishment on XDA, and actually every single decent Android site. Explaining how to get it, where to get it, or giving it out is a major no no, and asking (especially after being told) is a no no as well.
This isn't iOS where everything costs money, this is Android where you can literally get 95% of apps for free from the market. There is no need to steal, not that there is on iOS (I have an iPad, love it, and have paid for my fair share of apps even though it is jailbroken).
Lastly, if that is your only desire in a phone, then just don't get one. If all you want to do is use your phone to steal, then you don't deserve to have a phone.

You were told multiple times it is a no no, and in turn decided to ask again. At that point it isn't a question of not a knowing, it is clearly a matter of not caring.

Welcome to XDA! I came to the Vibrant from the iPhone 3G and I love it, as one has said you can steal apps but no one here will help you with that, also apps seem to generally cheaper on android than they are on iOS.
Depending on what you are looking for you may be happier where your currently have. Android's market is growing quiet well but I feel that it currently doesn't match the iOS market when it comes to games, so if games are your thing I would stay away (but we do have great emulators!) Many things may have changed in iOS since I used it last back in 3.0 something another.
Now few things I love personally love about android! Google Voice is easily used, Ive been using it for about 2 years now and haven't given out my real number since, its the best! Google maps is amazing, always getting updates haven't used a standalone gps since. You can customize the desktop however you feel please (don't need winterboard and everything, its just a ton easier). Swype is pure amazing, I could never go back to normal texting after getting use to it, super fast! And finally googles voice integration, you can talk and have it type what is said, you can have it search for you or even open your google maps and have it set your navigation!
As I'm sure you've noticed by now the forum has a lot of idiots who have nothing to add to the community except their derogatory remarks, sadly they don't seem to ever go away do they?

The link has short videos that would explain what it is better than I would.

Interesting, never even heard of that before.
Are you using the 2.3 or 2.2 on yours?

Officially, yes. Google has released 2.3 out but nothing official for us yet.
so what exactly is "rooting" then and what does it accomplish?

Rooting does what jail breaking did for the iphone. Allows you to do what you normally couldn't. Its also really easy to do, there are a few different things you can use but they all get the same thing done.
When you root you can install new rom's like a 2.3 rom if you wish. There developers who change them how they wish and then share them with the community, you can find them in Vibrant Android Development part of the forums. You can also download new kernels that will allow you to overclock your phone or even underclock if you wish.
In the android market there are some apps that also require you to root your phone to use them. One such app is Titanium Backup, it will back all the apps and stuff you have downloaded so if you install a new rom or lose your phone or something you can easily reinstall everything.
Basically rooting fully opens up your phone, allowing anything.
Hello, I've never owned a tablet of any kind but decided that I want one. After doing some research I found the Viewsonic gtablet as one that is in my price range. I've read about the good hardware, and the modding required for the software so I understand the work required. I've done extensive work on my desktop, so the modding doesn't worry me.
My biggest concern is that the reviews go from really bad to really good. Is this tablet worth it once you do the required modding?
Thanks, appreciate the input.
the tablet is completely worth it, in my opinion. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about the Gtablet...
that being said...I have nothing good to say about Viewsonic. They have let us down every chance they get. We asked for updates in April...they gave us one, then pulled it a day later (that lead to the 1.1 vs 1.2 bootloader issues). We requested that they enable us to run gingerbread or honeycomb with the proper drivers. They told us that it wasn't possible. Nvidia told us that if the "hardware partner" requested drivers, that they would support it. Just reently, though, Viewsonic claimed that they DID request drivers from Nvidia, but that Nvidia claimed that they wouldn't support our hardware past Froyo. SO, who is to be believed, Viewsonic, or Nvidia. the jury is still out on that one. I've asked Nvidia to confirm whether or not Viewsonic requested anything from them, and whether Nvidia erally did deny the request.
There is no evidence that Viewsonic is working on an update to their still crippled stock firmware. There is no evidence that Viewsonic handles any customer service or technical service requests in house. They've basically tried to sweep the Gtablet under the rug and abandon all of it's users.
So, in conclusion...i love my Gtablet, but in no way would I ever recommend that anyone buy anything from Viewsonic, considering how they've treated their customers.
I recommend the ipad to everyone I talk to. That's just a personal rule I've come up with.
That said, if you decide to get the vs gtab, please visit my website linked in the signature. All necessary files are either provided free or linked to the necessary sites. A donation would be nice, but it's entirely of your choosing. The most important thing is to follow my instructions down to the letter.
The gtab is still alive because of the developers working on the rom, like this xda forum...viewsonic has basically throw them away
XDA DEVELOPER FTW
Well, the gtab is still quite popular. I received a brand new gtab as a gift and put it up for sale on amazon. Within 1 hour, I had a buyer. So, there are still lots of people who want it. If you think about it, it's still a perfectly good piece of hardware. The problem is those damn corporate dumbasses from viewsonic who couldn't look past their own corporate jets.
All we've asked for are the damn drivers and they won't even give them to us.
Thanks for the opinions. I'm not in the market for an iPad due to the price. It's hard to justify that amount for something that is a luxury rather than a necessity.
I'm going to take a look at picking up the gtab, especially since it's on sale again.

Really, if an iPad 2 is out of your price range, then the G Tablet is a great introduction to the world of tablets. There is a wide range of excellent custom ROMs for it.
For me, the only major feature that is lacking is video calls with Skype. Otherwise, for casual Web browsing, watching Netflix, and other common tablet-friendly stuff, it is a great option at a great price.
OK..... As some of you know I own a deli/restaurant. We were broken into recently (no I don't have a security system and yes I'm a dope), luckily they only got us for $200-$300. I understand all of the obvious options we have for a system and I will be putting those in place asap.
Here's the thing.... there was no sign of forced entry. I have business partners (wasn't them) and 2 employees with keys (really don't think it was them) but possibly someone that knows any of the above got their key. None of that matters (my tiny brain will investigate that)....
Is there a security system or cams that could be linked to any of my android phones or tablets? If anyone knows of a system anything close to what I'm talking about, that would be really cool.
I'll be meeting with Time Warner and my wife just mentioned adt about a system but..... if I could any how have cams going to my tablets or phones that would be even more helpful, if it was an inside job.... and I hardly EVER think that way but there was no sign of forced entry. Also it happened the day of the Hurricane so the cops said anything outside with finger prints wouldn't show a thing.
Just saw something similar on the Nook Color forum and was wondering why I didn't ask this question to you guys the day it happened.
Money is somewhat of an option (as it is to most people) but having something feeding to my android devices would be priceless.
If this is an obvious answer please let this thread sink but if there is a way to have security running to my phones or tablets please speak up.
Thanks,
Chef

any suggestions for those that want the wireless route of camera? where I want to mount mine I wont have any existing cabeling for video and even getting power to it is gonna be tricky.
Really want remote viewing control on phone, recording dvr either onsite or in the cloud. most seem to be hardline cameras still except for the IP cameras which dont work with most typical dvr's ive seen at first glance. I know they make transmitters to convert the wired camera to wireless but thats adds a ton of clutter too as ones ive seen are bulky.
Try logitech alert 750e on Google.

I hate geovision dvr cards, but they have an android app finally. Most systems can be viewed from a web browser, but you'll want to make sure that there is an app for them as it makes viewing the video remotely much easier.
If you don't want to worry about finding an app for a specific brand go with wireless cameras. Don't get the kind that need a base unit. Get some that can be linked to a wireless router. You can then setup an existing computer to record the video or get a new computer dedicated for just this. Since each camera uses its own up address you can use one of the many ip camera apps in the market.
If you need help with anything send me a pm. I do camera installs and repair as a side job.

Let me talk to my business partners and wife tonight or tomorrow morning and I'll shoot you a pm after I talk to them. This seems to be a fairly cheap option w/out monthly fees or a base. I also have a sneaky suspicion that maybe someone is going in after we close and eating or feeding their friends and family like kings.
I work 7 days a week and close the business quite a few of the days. Sometimes I get a gut feeling that things weren't the wah they were when I left the night before. Soooo..... If I could be watching my business at night while yucking it up on xda, that's a win/win.

I don't have any information for you, but just want to show my sympathy toward your situation. It would be terrible if someone you trusted with the keys was doing it or even giving the key to their friends to do it. I am a Union Committeeman at the shop I work at and I just had to sit in with a maintenance man of ours while he got fired for stealing from the company. He was using his key to come in after hours and stealing copper wire and brass fittings and taking them to the scrap yard for money. The Plant manager was suspicious that it was an inside job and took pictures of the cars and people he suspected and took them down to the local scrap yard. They identified the guy and his car and even gave him a copy of the invoice he signed himself(dumbass). He lost a decent job over $76. There was nothing the Union could do to fight it because he was basically caught red handed. The Plant Manager gave him the option to either resign his position on the spot, or he could try to fight it and he would get the cops involved. He admitted doing it and resigned. Anyway, I hope you can catch whoever is doing it. I hope it's not the people you have trusted with keys, but it just sounds strange to me that there are no signs of forced entry. It may cost you now to install a camera system, but will save you $ in the long run. Good Luck bro.

Thanks! I tried doing a little detective work myself but lead me nowhere. They got me for the $100 bucks I leave in the till everynight to start the next day with and got my change box (roughly $200) where I keep all my rolled quarters, dimes etc to make change for the register ( this is where my detective work came in) . I went to a local change for dollars machine vendor but so many people use those daily (including myself when our home change cup gets full) that it would be impossible. I went to local stores and told them to keep an eye on anyone paying with rolled change. That's about the extent of my detective abilities. If I knew any crack dealers they would be the first ones I would ask if anyone's has been buying crack with rolled quarters (haha) .
As for food possibly missing at night is weighing heavy on my mind due to the whole trust issue when you hand a key to your business to someone you trust. I really don't think its anyone with the keys but maybe someone they know grabbing the key while they're sleeping or whatever.
I'll get the bastard whoever it is.

My main curiosity is what most people use it for, as each person finds different value in different items....
I know what it is for and I'm enjoying using it in my own fashion. The main reason I bought it, so you will know, is because I found it for $50 bucks and it will increase the value of my Atrix 4g as a package, if & and when I go to sell it, should I ever find a phone I like more.
Also,Congrats on your new bicycle as well. I hope it serves you well. Just wait until you take the training wheels off! You'll be REALLY happy.
Thanks, I'm really happy with it! It has streamers on the handles!
I bought the lapdock in a deal also, but unfortunately mine is off to Motorola as there was something wrong with it when I received it. I think the lapdock will change somewhat in functionality once Webtop 3.0 becomes available to us. It should have more of a "laptop" functionality at that point I think.
I used it for very little until I installed webtop2sd, and turned it into a very serviceable portable connected computer. I have replaced my current laptop with the lapdock, and have been quite happy using Openoffice, and PDF reader. Professionally, I now have used it in court 3-4 times to hold reference materials (instead of printing volumes of online records), and I do email with it. I have also heard that it is very functional in a remote desktop setting, but aside from testing this, I have not pursued it.
The one issue that I have is installing firefox extensions. My lack of linux knowledge is holding me back, and I would like to be able to read .tif files from within the browser, but as of now cannot. Other than this, I think it is safe to consider this as functional as a regular (lower end) laptop.
Again, I cannot reiterate how much more useful webtop2sd makes this device. Who knows what the ICS update will bring?
Meh, id rather have an actual linux distro than android on a screen: Ubuntu is made for a mouse and keyboard, android, and specifically the apps for it, are made for touchscreens that our lapdocks do not have, so i dont see it translating well.

Root or no root, they sold it as a Google Play store accessible device. And it isn't!

They're still working on it, actually, and my understanding is that no 240x240 screen sized device will be capable of supporting it under android 4.3, so they may have it out when they update to 4.3, pending Google's say-so.
So a device that does not have certification for a version of Android that doesn't even exist yet is a fraud?
As far as it not coming on the Android 4.2.2 version, that was public knowledge back in early September.
Oh BTW
"While all efforts are made to ensure timely completion of software functions, software development too can have unforseeable delays which may result in software functions being delivered in an update after a product has shipped."
On the Omate KS page since Aug 21st 2013
Hell. At least they updated you about it vs threatening folks publicly when ever anybody brought up any real issues.
BAWWWWWWWWWW QQ more. This isn't new knowledge and you're an idiot for thinking a company is a fraud because they hit a hiccup they didn't count on when bringing their product to the US.
This is XDA. You're complaining in the wrong place.

Are you serious?!? Name at least one crowdfunding campaign that treated their backers with as much respect, which had as many detailed updates, which had stayed on schedule, which has worked so hard around the globe? They came up front about Play store hiccup and even offered an alternative of another on-line store until they will resolve licensing issue with Google (which btw they are working on actively).
I don't understand everyone defending this "upfront" action they decided to take after a Google exec put the kabash on the Play store on this device last week. But I work for a manufacturer of medical devices and if we advertise something to be in our product it has to be there or we would get our assess sued into bankruptcy. My point was that they should have never advertised the device as a Google Play store capable device if they didn't have all their ducks in a row. Business wise, it's unethical and in other markets even criminal.

No need for name calling man. I'm just trying to wrap my head around this situation.

I wasn't calling you one. I will say none of your posts indicated you were trying to understand this so much as belittling those who don't agree with you.
If you want to discuss it, let's discuss it. Don't patronize people.

I certainly was not trying to belittle anyone in the XDA universe.
But the solution of sideloading the Play Store apk is unsettling to me. I own an OUYA and was an early adopter of one of the first Android tablets, the Viewsonic G-book. I have also been rooting and roming since the DROID 1. While ROMS and sideloading is great, it's just unstable and in some situations becomes a full-time job of keeping up with updates and fixes.
I love messing with my devices as much as anyone else here, but for once I'd like to just buy an Android device that I didn't feel the need to have to change in someway, and spending upwards to $300 on an Android device in 2013 with its fair amount of promises should deliver on them.

I agree with you completely and feel the same way but we need to draw the line here at calling it fraud.
I'm comfortable enough with side loading that it isn't an issue but the developer model is what is being discussed. November 30th is a long ways away in shipping terms and until they definitively say no I just think it's better not to get up in arms about it. Let them do their thing. Believe me when I say that if they screw this up they will sink.

ORLY. AGAIN, the play store (Google Services) issue was a matter of public knowledge for over a month.

Should they have removed the mention of Play Store being included back in early Sept? In my opinion yes. The release that recently came out should have also been done back then as well. "unethical"? Maybe. Criminal? No. The disclaimer that was a the bottom of their KS since day one covers their ass. Period, end of story, thanks for playing.

All the KS units are in the clear. The pre-orders may be another matter.
In my book, the campaign of AI Watch is fraudulent. Regarding Omate, I have a pretty good feeling that even if they would have published this disclaimer while campaign was active - they still would have gotten as much supporters/backers because for a lot of the people not including Google play store is not a show stopper. With a ways around it (sideloading), and alternative store, and active updates about working with Google to resolve this officially, I still say they built a strong community trust.
Btw, with Google planning to release their own smartwatch and probably a pressure from tanking Gear, something tells me there are political reasons for Google to continue delaying their decision. Just my conspiracy theory

At least Omate have admitted that Google Play support won't be there out the box, unlike AI Smartwatch, which is in the same position. They are still giving the impression it comes with Play store.

I think its really funny how people are complaining so much about it. i mean i am disappointed my self as its part of why i've pre ordered the 8gb 1gb omate truesmart but it wasn't the main reason the main reason is because its the best smart watch there is so far. I'm no programmer but I can still install apps etc so it wont be too hard for people to install them, them self's once someone provides us with them to install.
as for no smart watches coming with play store i have the omate prototype on my wrist right now (re-branded as simvalley aw-414.go) and it has play store built into the rom. i know because i factory reset it and it was still there. that being said i hope they make an update for the one I'm wearing right now as it has some terrible bugs on the ui that make it not so good for using some apps show multiple copy's of their icons and you can not remove any of them without uninstalling said apps, after you put so many apps on it some start to vanish and can only be seen if you search for them, it looks like they tried hybrid the app drawer and the home screens as their is no home screens so no widgets or only showing apps you want to see. it also has folders but their useless as you can only put 3 apps in them. it becomes useless if i install a different launcher to fix the other issues. do you think omate firmware would work on it ? because the firmware thats on it says omate_hw2.0_20130923.1 and the model number says omate too.
if someone releases firmware for it that works properly it would be not so bad and very similar to the lower spec omate internals wise? as it seems to be reasonable for its specs if you ignore those software bugs that should have been fixed before release.

I'm sure if it doesn't work right out of the box, we can make you a rom from the Omate that will work quite easily.

It does not sadly. I mean its still useable but the issues it does have make it not very good to use so it really needs a rom that works properly.
the rom thats on it is custom build version: OMATE_HW2.0_20130923.115849 and the model number is listed as OMATE.
but yeah I'd be really grateful if someone does make a custom rom for it that works properly and tells me which google play store version to install and were to get the apk etc, I'm also guessing they would need to make a rooting app for it too so it could be flashed tho right?
