Rezound south korea - HTC Rezound

So I am leaving Montana for south Korea soon and was pretty excited to learn that my Rezound is global capable. The only thing is I am unsure if it will work on a Korean SIM card, or how to do so. I am s-off running the first leaked ics ruu. Do I need to ruu to the global firmware? Or will any gsm capable roms work without a firmware update? Also, if there's any one out there who has been to south Korea and could give me some tips on providers to choose from it would be appreciated.

You need to install the official Global RUU, leaks can be problematic because they prevent you from getting OTAs on stock rom and may not be the latest, most stable software.
I think there have been like 2 official firmware upgrades and several leaks between what you are running and global.
You do need a GSM enabled ROM, and one that is based on the global firmware. Simplicity or Newts One XXX 5.08 may be good options for you if u want to stick with a Sense ROM.
You may still need to call Verizon re: international calling, although I wouldn't mention I was rooted.

Thanks for helping. I was a little unclear in my original post however; I actually am running Newts One XXX 5.1.0 currently (awesome by the way). What I am wondering though is this; will the fact that I am not on the global firmware mean that I will need to RUU update in order to get service with a South Korean provider. I do not plan on trying to remain with Verizon as I will be in South Korea for more than a year.

You will have to ruu to global firmware to obtain global radios to work with the global Rom

rezound in rok
I'm also heading to the rok and hoping to use my rezound. I'm on stock ics ota. I'm going to see what I get on a stock rom before I do any unofficial releases, but I expect to drop SMS capabilities or maybe data like you see in the states with a T-Mobile sim in. I arrive in Korea on the 31st so I'll update sometime late next week and let you know. I've been to Korea before and I believe we will have to go with SK Telecom as our carrier because it is the only GSM network. The other networks are cdma to the best of my knowledge. Hopefully my next update will be from my phone on a Korean network!

Rezound in South Korea update
In Korea now. I just flashed my phone from a stock OTA ICS, unrooted, s-on over to the Global RUU found on Androidpolice.
I have tried to buy just a sim card from several stores, SK, KT Olleh etc, and the stores all say that I have to go to the headquarters stores located in Seoul, Yongsan Train Station on the top floor. Apparently this is the ONLY way to get a sim for a global phone, other than having a korean national get one for you and give it to you. This weekend I will be going to the headquarters stores and getting a sim, Other problems you may run into are related to being a foreigner in Korea. They will sometimes not want to sell you a phone on a contract because you as a foreigner could disappear at any time without paying the bill. So, they will try to get you to buy prepaid. I don't want to deal with prepaid anything, but that may be a viable option to get a SIM card easily. Just buy a reallllly cheap prepaid phone that has a sim in it, pull the sim and throw it in your global enabled device. Unless you speak Korean, navigating to the headquarters and getting what you want may prove a bit difficult. Fortunately, I do speak Korean, so I will let you know how it goes.
I will update again once I actually have a Sim in my phone!

Thanks for the valuable information so far. I will be arriving there at the end of November and am looking forward to hearing more about how It's going for you there.

got a sim, no data!
Finally got a sim from KT Olleh today. The girl at the counter didn't believe me that the phone would work, but I got her to do it anyway. By the way, don't try to set up service for a phone anywhere in Korea on a weekend. They cannot activate a new phone unless its a weekday. So anyway, got it all setup and the girl sits there and plays with my phone for a while without saying anything to me. Then she tells me that the calling and texting is fine but the phone won't get a data signal. I asked her to set the APN, and she said she did. I checked it out and she had put in the KT APN as alwayson.ktfwing.com Looks right to me, and she seemed to know what she was doing for the most part. Then she started to go on about how Korea runs on CDMA for the most part and not GSM yadda yadda.
So, I have a Rezound, working for incoming and outgoing calls and text on KT Olleh, but no data signal at all. I might repost a similar message in another forum topic to see if any gurus have any advice on how to get it working. Also going to do some more research. I'm new to this but there is tons of information out there. I will post again once I have resolution or give up and buy a new phone!
PS Phones in korea can be REALLY expensive. Dropped 850 on my wifes LG phablet (optimus VU2)!!! Equivalent to the instinct in the states I think?

didn't flash twice
So, I am a phone noob, and did a lot of reading last night. Saw that most people flash rezounds twice anytime putting on new firmware etc. I think I will try that tonight and see if I pick up the data signal.

The ruu's generally need to be flashed twice. However I did not need to do so going to the global, the ruu automatically took care of everything.

website for kt olleh
Some helpful information that KT Olleh has to say about using a non-korean phone in Korea.
http://expatblog.kt.com/71

The rezound may not have the radio frequency that network uses. That would be the main problem as to why you aren't picking up data.

I am currently in Seoul and have rented an Evergreen Mobile Sim Card that works on KT Olleh's network. I am curious as to whether you were ever able to get your Rezound to work with their Data network, and if so, how? Mine works with Olleh Wifi for free but will not even recognize the 3G, despite my having changed the APN settings, and even going to the Evergreen Mobile office in Yeoksa-dong today (they said they couldn't get it to work after an hour of fiddling with it themselves).
Suggestions? Do I have to root?
Oh, and the link in your above post has expired. Could you summarize what KT said?
Thanks!

new baseband on t-mobile US

Would someone point me in the right direction or explain why the new baseband has problems on t-mobiles US network?
I have been searching and cannot find very much.
Thanks in advance.

If I may elaborate on what Jrhodes85 was saying:
With the new baseband, the 1700Mhz band (which accounts for half of T-mobile's HSDPA coverage in the US, among other carriers) is completely unstable, if not non-existent.
Most international carriers' data works great, but O1 users in North America and possibly a couple other regions are slowly getting pushed into obsolescence.

So does this mean that T-Mobiles network is using a frequency hardly anybody uses which also means future ROMs which are build upon the new baseband?
I am not with T-Mobile USA because I am also German but because I feel they are the only company which uses GSM smartphones and has reasonable prices for data and voice.
ATT Sprint and Verizon in my opinion are drastically overpriced for they bad product they deliver and MetroPCS or BoostMobile seem to have questionable reputation when it comes to service quality.
What would this mean for our future with T-Mobile?
What do they do with new smartphones? They also use the old baseband?

The baseband is just the software that controls the phone's radio systems. It so happens that the baseband released in Europe apparently does not support the 1700 mhz part of the spectrum that carriers like T-Mobile broadcasts their signal on. I highly doubt that LG is passing on supporting an entire frequency range, as that would be a terrible business decision considering there are more carriers than just T-Mobile using it.
The spectrum T-mobile broadcasts on has other issues (no clear roadmap to 4G, etc), but you won't need to really worry about that for years.
To the OP: How does this manifest? Well, after flashing the new baseband, my data speeds have slowed down considerably. Google Music is now unusable, yet I am still able to make voice calls and send texts. I am not on T-Mobile, but I am using an Optimus T on WIND here in Canada.
Thanks for the responses.
The other day I briefly switched to the new baseband. One thing I noticed was that I had 3G in my office whereas before I did not, I don't know why, but I didn't notice any really problems. Only after reading a few things that others were saying I decided to go back to the old baseband.
What do the new tmobile phones have for a baseband? If they are on gingerbread are they on the new baseband? How does that work?
well I have a 30 MB dataplan hahah so I can somewhat not care about G3.
I mainly use it for Google Maps sometimes and thats it.
I am to cheap to pay more than 30 Dollars for such services. If they would charge 5 dollars for 500 MB ror so I would do it.
Well I hope that the baseband modem drivers for the LG Optimus at one point can support both frequencies as I just learned that this
is a driver option.
The German iPhone can be made to work in the USA when you just hack into the phone and activate the frequency used in the USA.
Tmobile isn't really anything compared to AT&T or Verizon, they honestly have far superior phones...in the days of the g1 which ran specifically on tmobile usa was easy to switch radio...back than it was Radio SPL and was as simple installing as flashing any rom or kernel...my question was simple....
Can tmobile users in the US have new baseband that provides working mobile data (3g/2g)..because without it working, the phones practically useless without wifi

Unless someone is able to merge that portion of the old baseband with the new baseband, I sincerely doubt we're going to see this resolved.
T-Mobile seems to have no interest in pushing LG to update the Optimus T to Gingerbread. Either that, or they're waiting to improve the adoption rate of Gingerbread on the G2X before they bother with older phones (horrible logic, if you ask me).
I hate to say it, but there may need to be somewhat of a divide among developers if certain roms can't be built for both basebands. Of course, this isn't anything new for the Optimus line. The Optimus V is all on its own, too.

Well i know that on the openoptimus ROM new Baseband 3g works fine but not on the other ROMs thats why i thought it was a apn issue but i never got a chance to check cause i bricked mine going back to the v10 baseband and got a new p509 from warranty, and as far as tmobile update i highly doubt it because i know someone that works for tmobile and he said they are phasing the phone out they are not even on the shelf at most stores i wish some one would just let us know is it just the apn setting cause we can put those in manually here (I have a link if anyone needs how to do that PM me) i just gave my P509 to my girlfriend so i dont want to try and then have her not have data when she gets a new phone i will try but not right now
so based on what you say
the new openoptimus rom once stable and running fine on the Optimus T would allow full access to 3G ???
I bricked my phone wanted to do a replacement and the guy on the phone at T-Mobile told me they dont because they dont support it anymore.
So I guess you are pretty right with your assumption.
Fortunately I was able to recover it on my own.

I agree - if the camera would be better I would more than happy with this phone and not need more.
Yea its a good phone I loved my Optimus and in fact still do I mod it for my girlfriend now for fun but I will tell you going from the Optimus to this phone (HTC Sensation) is amazing I love this phone and if you are going to upgrade it is a great phone, granted the Tmobile gs2 had more storage and a better processor (there is really no difference) the development in the Tmobile version of the galaxy s2 is slow and week as hell almost all themed ROMs while mine has great ROMS full working ICS ROMs both with HTC Sence 3.5 and stock ICS ROMs as well as official support for cyanogen mod and Miui which the Tmobile GS2 doesn't have just a little tip to my fellow Tmobile users .....anyway back on topic I'm pretty sure we can get the new baseband cyanogen mod working on our Optimus t and I will figure out how as soon as I get my girl another phone

I am almost certain that will not be the case. Android developers, while talented, are not electrical engineers and developing firmware to run a 3G radio is far beyond their skill set. The only possibility is for LG to update with a new baseband that doesn't screw over Optimus T users.
all of these new baseband scares me now.
I am using the new baseband on Optimus T on Mobilicity network (1700)
is there a risk that I may bricked this phone?
I am using Adam's N1 CM7 , with V20G baseband
It works well for me and I love CM7
Valent
I dont think you can brick the phone just by flashing the baseband.
And the baseband discussion is an issue with the T-Mobile service in the USA as I think in Europe it works fine and I think Asia should be the same.
Does Indonesia use GSM or CDMA?

I don't think you ruined your phone. I had mine on the new baseband for a couple days and didn't have any problems. I reverted back to the old one and it has been just fine.
I have an Optimus One T too, but I bought it unlocked on eBay. My carrier uses 2100MHz for 3G where I live. So far I've had no problems with the old baseband. I'm using CM7.1 (mik_os 6.5.8) but would like to try adfad666's latest versions, which only support the new baseband. Do you guys think it would work?
I've got a lg-p509 optimus-t in the U.S., do I understand correctly that I'm on the old baseband since t-mo never did the official gb update for this phone?
When I check in "about phone" my baseband info is the seemingly meaningless "V07u-000-000-mar-23-2009" not v10 or v20g etc.
P.S. I'm running adfad666's cm-7.2.0-RCO-optimusone-kang with goldenleaf 2.6.32.9 #1 right now with no issues to speak of.
Update: I booted windows and installed the lg mobile support tool which seems to show I'm at v10s, which they want to update to 10L maybe??
"get info" button returns 10s and main lg tool window shows 10L below my phone model.
it says update available, but is kind of short on detail.

Calling all Canadians! Bell Telus and Rogers users.

Alright so ill start this of by saying, Picked up my note today and loving it so far. Got it rooted thanks to Da G and getting ready to get into roms.
Anyway im making this thread to see if anyone else has tried anything out on the non-AT&T notes(i.e I717M and what not). So far from what i have read people are developing mostly for the AT&T model and saying its not for bell rogers or telus. Now I have been in the samsung world for a while and when it comes to my galaxy there was always ways around this.
For instance most of my ROMs were made for the international version not my bell version. But as long as I kept a copy of the bell modem on my phone i could just flash that and the ROM worked great. So does anyone have a copy of the bell telus or rogers modem for the note? or know if there all the same?
Another example in the galaxy s world was the captivate(Same soft keys as our phones). A person with a captivate could flash an international ROM as long they made a soft key fix when they developed the ROM.
One of the main reasons I ask all of this is because i see so many N7000 ROMs up and running and am wondering what will and wont work.
Look forward to hearing from you all

Bell note here. Been. The at & t roms with no problem.
The only issue that I have is the Yellow Pages crap that appears in my contact list as well as at& t bloat depending on the rom. Easy enough to deal with though.
Aside from that, it's been perfect.

Also, Don't venture into the N7000 roms because they will not work.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
The N7000 ROMs can hard brick your phone since the hardware if the two models are completely different. AS Far as ROMs go, most are based off the AT&T software simply because that's the only ICS leak we have available. But you can use any ROM for the i717 on your Bell Note. I have a Bell Note and flashed almost every ROM and never ran into any problems. Also, Ruth the help ofa lot of people on this sure, I've made stock images of the Bell, Telus, and Rogers Notes so we can always go back. Best if luck and don't hesitate to ask anything.
Thanks for the info, I get mine today and was wondering the same thing.
Yesterday I flashed my Rogers Branded Galaxy i717 with Bell Rom and Kernel and have not 1 issue. I chose to flash the rogers i717 with Bell because I use bell mobiletv and this was the only way to get this particular app to work. Again not 1 issue with data or anything else.
No Rooted device either. Just flashed using ODIN.
I'm currently running the UCLE2 Rom on my Rogers i717. I've noticed that I am not getting LTE where I should be. And GPS connectivity is shoddy at best.
I have a second i717 which is stock that is with me to compare (family member).
I am going to flash the Rogers modem to hopefully correct atleast the LTE issue. Anyone know if this would improve my GPS connectivity as well?
For a number of years I have been buying Canadian phones to use on ATT. Canadain ROMs have less restrictions than ATT. For instance tethering and NFC are not locked. Also after rooting my Roger's Note it took under a minute to remove the Rogers branding. (all except splash screen) I was left with a fully optioned unbranded ROM.
I did want to try the stock UCLE2 ROM out of curiosity but I thought it would not install because my phone was not an ATT I717. How did you install it eugenekim618? Personally I would rather wait for the Rogers ICS version. Keep checking everyday to see if it is available.
I have tried quite of a few of the ROMS on here with my Bell i717M, no problems at all so far, other than the "android.phone has stopped working" at startup, I don't know the cause but it only happens at boot.
DO NOT use N7000 roms! But all of the AT&T stuff has worked great for me.

I followed the posts in the Dev section to Root the phone.
Then installed CWM.
The picked a ROM I thought was good and followed the instructions in it's respective post to install.
I've done a lot of ROM installs for the Dell Streak I used to have and for a Sony Xperia X10.
So I am not totally unfamiliar with the process. Just a matter of getting used to the delivery method for each manufacturer. And then, dealing with the quirks of a ROM that is not 100% for your carrier. Goes with the territory, right?
I tried to read all the posts in a given thread as much as I can.
So you are saying you didn't install the one click odin stock UCLE2 ROM?

No, that doesn't work for non AT&T phones I believe. I tried it, and ODIN recognized the COM, but failed to install. From my readings, can't do the one click install on Rogers since it's not a Rogers ROM.
all custom roms should work no problem, ive flashed tons on my unlocked bell note.
its the stock odin files when you want to make sure you get the proper device.
Hey guys Ive flashed pretty much all the roms I can and some I cant lol. So far my experiances have encountered a few setbacks but nothing substantial and allot if not most of the bugs and glitchs occurring in the first & second gen of roms have been fixed or patched.
As far as roms go as was already mentioned as long as you stay away from n7000 model roms and stick to i727 youll be ok. With at&t roms I always seem to have signal and gps issues. Generally tho I find my signal problem will clear itself up on its own and I believe is actually just just caused by the fresh software 'settling in', even though my signal appears low or fluctuating speed testing always shows Im getting peak d/l & u/l speeds. If the signal doesnt seem to improve flashing the Bell stock modem via cwm always does the trick. Gps usually works great, very fast & accurate, when Im having location issues I use the 'faster fix' app from the market, I dont know about anyone elses experiance but allot of the times theres a problem the gps server isnt set to the normal 'north america pool' but servers Ive never seen before or set to an 'international pool'.
All in all besides signal headaches the only other recurring problems are the inherent and unpredictable random force closing of system apps. It can be pretty random but I find a few constant trouble makers to be at&t software update, android phone. At&t update can be disabled easily under applications in the main settings or I was able to actually remove it using 'rom toolbox's app manager but strangely not with root toolboxs remove system apps. For pretty much all other f/c problems the remedy is a running of 'fix permissions', there are a bunch of ways/apps to do it and Ive found using 'rom manager' works the best meanwhile rebooting into recovery and fixing permissions from there will actually cause more problems.
Ok so those are the most recurring and annoying issues Ive had to name a few but the list is too big to write merely because Ive tried just about every rom right from the sketchiest unstable first releases and everything in between lol so feel free to drop me line if your stuck on a problem cause I might be able to help.
But before I end this novel here lol I just flashed the new 'OnlyOne Beta2' rom from the development section and it runs great. The rom is super stable, very fast and features both fully functional S Voice app and fully functional S Notes app. If you havnt tried S Notes yet its awesome the new functions and abilities totally blew me away so I highly recommend you give this rom a try!

If you had LTE before and lost it through flashing a custom ROM or whatever then try changing your APN to your Carrier LTE network. If you never had LTE when you bought your phone, probably the seller gave you a wrong sim. tell her to give you a 403 LTE capable sim, the 401 is only 4G.

Try *#2263#
Then force select LTE, and select ALL. That should force the LTE connection. So watch the connection bars. You should see a loss of connection, then reconnect on LTE. Once that is established, do the code again, and just select automatic.

[Q] Trying to get ics 4.0 on my Samsung Showcase

So after reading through all the posts about flashing my phone to ics from droidstyle's post, i ended up trying to flash my phone from 2.3.5 (which I was not able to update normally by my crappy carrier) to one of the ics roms. Which ended up giving me zero 3g access. My question is are their specific files i can pull from a working Showcase with the latest carrier supported os, to put on my phone after i flash it to ics to get it to access 3g again? My problem is all these roms and what not tend to be based off verizons phone the fascinate. Which as far as i can tell are almost identiacal except a few differences. I dont have verizon as my carrier but a little kansas based one called nex-tech.
there is a 3g data fix.zip floating around here somewhere in this section...thats what u need.
*edit found it

most likely you will have to call your carrier and have them do a esn swap or activate a old phone on your line then switch back.
I went down to the office and they did a swap of a phone they had in the building. No luck what so ever. My girl friend and i have the same exact phone, minus a small hardware update between them. Ive completely erased all of my phone and flashed a generic showcase rom and updated through their website. They programmed it and all that jazz but no luck...
phone info
hardware version 1500.05
firmware version 2.3.5
Baseband version S:i500.05 K.EI20
Biuld number SCH-I500.EI20
If u need any other info im happy to do anything to get this damned 3g back

You want an easy fix? Activate it on a Verizon account....
I'm not trying to offend you, but Samsung created it for Verizon network...you might be able to program it to work on another, but you might not...idk
DROID DOES, Apple did...like I forgot when
Well the phone is a Nex-tech phone, that is where i bought it from. That is the local cell phone provider here. Its worked flawlessly rooted for almost 6 months. Then i decided to try and get ics on it and followed the guide droid so awesomely wrote up for everyone. It didnt work so well for me, because Nex-tech is some random generic cdma cellphone provider.

I had a Sprint Epic for a brief time but live in an area where it was using Nex-tech's towers since Nex-tech is part of Sprint's roaming alliance. I was running custom Froyo roms from XDA because there was no official Froyo release at the time. After a few months it had the same problem with losing 3G. I spent two hours on it with Sprint's tech support and never got it to work again. They even sent me a refurbed phone and it failed right out of the box. They wanted me to drive to the nearest store to have them activate it, which was 1 1/2 hours away when it should have been able to activate thru Nextech's system. Needless to say I ate the ETF and got a Fascinate.
My theory is Nextech has some kind of black list that shuts off data on phones it thinks are roaming for an excessive amount of time. Maybe switching to an ICS Rom designed for the Fascinate might have triggered that.
Good luck with getting it working. The main thing that keeps me from going back to Nextech is their lame tech support and huge repair times instead of refurbished swapouts. I keep hoping when Nextech's contract with Sprint is up next year maybe Sprint will come out here.

Rezound International on ICS Leak

So I put the latest .10 ICS leak on my phone yesterday because I can't wait for the OTA since i'm leaving soon. I downloaded the 4G on off app and am thinking I should be able to pop in any SIM card and it should work on GSM. Is the phone unlocked? Also I might need to use my normal Verizon SIM to use in Italy and Spain. The verizon reps said if I left it in it would work just fine. Is this true? I currently don't have any GSM cards to test with and I've been looking everywhere for the answer but no success. Help would be amazing.
Thanks in advance
For full GSM support I believe you need to install one of the custom roms with it added...

But I thought that was one part of the ICS update. So is the phone kinda locked like I can only use verizons rates? I want to try a SIM but I don't have one
With GB or the ICS leak you probably can get basic calling and texts with a GSM cell company sim card.
With the conrom ROM you should also get mms and data to work. Supposedly everything works.
Also, I suspect gsm antenna is not in the extended battery cover, so you should use the standard back cover that came with the phone.
I personally have not tried gsm in my rezound, so the above advise might be incorrect. this is just something I am interested in.
howard
p.s. T-Mobile sells a $1 sim card with 10 minutes of talk time, an internet deal. So you can buy this $1 simm to test with.
p.p.s. You will also need to go into the settings and add the apn settings for the cell company whose sim you are using. data and mms won't work without this.

Thank you so much. I just need calling and data and mms to work. I'm just going to google how to change the APN setting as you said. Thanks a lot for the help man. I have the ICS leak which is supposed to support global roaming straight from VZW.
Well, there is a thanks button you can click on.
I do not know much about Verizon's New global roaming, bit I suspect it will be expensive per minute. Using a local cell company's sim card probably will cost less for long visits overseas.
I wrote an app called HZUTILS which can also do the radio changes like the LTE on off app. My app is free, also does a few other functions, and if you click on an advertisement I earn a few cents.
The CONROM is available in the development forum. During installation one is asked GSM or LTE. no easy switching back and forth. I suggest you make a nandroid backup first with Ramon ra recovery or the touch recovery. Restoring the backup is a method for returning to LTE. Or one can reinstall the conrom and select LTE.
If you look through the development forum you will find other gsm ROMs. The CONROM does both LTE and GSM, was made from the latest .10 ICS leak, and sounds like it is very reliable.
p.s. let me know how this works for you.
Thank you but I don't wanna root my phone really.. I forgot something last time and almost bricked it. Well not really but it was scary. My only question is really can I just switch it from your app as it is now because I can or must I have a custom Rom for some type of reason?

I recall, a few months ago, reading a very long multiple page posting about people having various levels of success with stock GB and changing the radio setting using LTE on off app. People were successful with phone calls and texting, but had difficulties with mms and data.
People did strange things to get data working, and it only worked for some people. I think it involved driving the phone in a car to get somewhere with no cell signal, then back home? Not sure, as I don't recall it very well.
Then people started typing in the APN for their gsm provider. This evening, just for fun I tried typing in the APN for T-Mobile into .10 ICS leak rezound, and it would not get saved. No error message. Verizon appears to have locked out the capability to add a non Verizon APN. So, yes, I think a gsm ROM is needed.
BTW, there must be plenty of rezound owners using GSM who can more confidently give you more concrete advise. They can tell you what they tried, what worked, what didn't, and what is the best approach. I think the answer is a GSM ROM, or paying high roaming charges to Verizon.
Alright ill just try and get a sim off someone on at&t and see what happens. But thanks a lot man I hope I get an answer from someone doing it. You were a lot of help ill let you know how it goes!!

I just received the official Verizon ICS in the last hour. I am poking around looking for the global feature, since it is THE promised reason I bought the phone. Offhand, I do not see the global feature anywhere . Network mode still only shows' LTE/CDMA' or 'CDMA only' as the choices, so it seems that 'global' is still not official from Verizon in the ICS as just shipped.
The LTE ON/OFF app seems to have a few more options than when I last looked, but I've no idea what's may have changed.
I put in a tmobile SIM card and changed the settings in the app to GSM and wcdma and it worked calling and texting! It didn't have data but if you go to mobile network settings and access point names I feel like you could add the apn and be golden using data and mms over gsm. I'm Hoping this is the truth but I don't have anything to test it with

I'm on the leak from three months ago, in Afghanistan. Popped in a sim card from a shop on base and it works with no problems. Calls only though no data. I'm using the extended battery. Had to use the lte on off app to put it in gsm.

GSM switch gone in ICS OTA?
Looks like option to switch to GSM is gone. Dialing *#*#4636#*#* does nothing...
that option to show network modes when dailing *#*#4636#*#* is removed in latest RUUs and official OTA, but however you may flash any of ROMs available to get GSM

So SMS worked with the ICS OTA, both send and receive? Last time I tried 2 months ago under Gingerbread, GSM calls were fine, but could only receive SMS text, could not sent texts, and never got data to work.
I've spent over 1/2 of the last 3 months overseas, so this is a big deal to me. Even if just the calls and SMS send/receive work, I will be pleased. VZ told me the global feature is not in this latest Verizon ICS OTA, but maybe the inner workings are there and they just haven't put in the frontend and any VZ profitmaking carrier lockouts?
I am off to South Africa next Friday. Sounds like I will have to get an MTN sim in ZA and try again when I get there. Maybe this ICS OTA will have some value to me afterall. I'll try to remember to post back here, whether it works or not. If it all works, however, I'm pretty sure the posting will only be redundant info, since my screams of giddiness would be heard around the world... afterall, I've been using an old unlocked GSM RAZR flip phone when I travel.

The LTE ON OFF app still seems to allow access. However, until I get overseas I'm not sure how to tell if it is truly switching/working
I only tried receiving a text/: sorry I can't confirm sending. But if you flash a gsm Rom which I might everything works

[Q] Custom ROMs and Internation Travel?

The wife just upgraded to an VZW S4 and so far loves it. Thank the gods as she was coming from a problematic Incredible 2. We do some internation travel and the question is How friendly are custom ROMs when it comes to travelling in other countries? We took a trip to Belize with the DInc2 running Virtuous Affinity and then another to Norway and neither trip did the phone work correctly, but I'm not sure if this was a ROM issue or something else.
I've tried to Google this question, but hadn't found an answer. Perhaps I'm wording it wrong.
Should we just stick with the stock ROM since international service is a must? Rooting isn't a must, but the deciding factor is the ability to tether which can be done rooted or unrooted so sticking with stock shouldn't be an issue.
Im here for the same question. Any one else have an idea if custom roms still work with international travel and Verizon international plans?
I am currently running CleanRom 1.6.5 and just got back from Italy. I used a sim card from over there, popped it in, and an hour later was up and running, data included. I used the data the entire time, and made a couple calls. It was only $26 for the sim and the service, and may be a better/cheaper option for you. I can't say about the VZW International service, but if that worked, I don't see why it wouldn't. Hope this helps.
