Hey everyone,
I have a unlocked O2 phone it seems, on Monday I tried rom'ing it to Jelly bean.. I found a decent rom from the Internet and went ahead with the firmware update. The firmware turned out to be the most basic of basic jelly bean builds... I couldn't even sign in with my Google account...? So I wanted to restore it.
I found another rom and rooted it first etc but after this one installed it kept looking the Samsung start up logo.. Looked up the symptoms and it seems a mild form of bricked. So I went into recover mode and did a data wipe and restore.
When it restored it booted up and now I had jelly beans with all my old settings and it even started to download my apps etc. Great I thought just what I wanted but I have no idea how it's done this.
Anyways... Been playing on it for about an hour now and it seems dead slow. I've cleared the cache and cleared all recent apps and I'm running at 86% ram capacity it seems. Is this normal when no apps are open? Opening my contacts seems to take a good second or two to open. It never did this on ics.
Any ideas anyone? I've attached a screen shot for illustration.
Thank you in advance.

That's what happens when we don't do FULL wipe. Search megawipe and use before flashing roms.

No.
Do not use megawipe, superwipe or bullish*t-stupidwipe.
They are not necessary, juts wipe cache, dalvik and system before flashing a ROM.
That is all.
@OP
Get rid of that damn monitoring app, don't use task killers or any other pointless apps.

Wouldn't that restore the pre-wipe state and do nothing at all?
Back up just using the feature in the recovery mode or use something like titanium back up?

I've restored it back to standard firmware on jelly bean but it's still saying I'm using 687 / 833 ram. Is this normal? What do others on here have for there ram availability?

My phone shows 684/833MB RAM but it is very smooth. I let Android do the memory management in my phone. Don't bother myself with shutting down any apps or getting more 'Juice' out of my phone.
Running LJ4 version.
What Rom are you using (version)?

YEs, it is normal.
The motto with Android is that "unused RAM is wasted RAM"
The way Android manages RAM has nothing to do with how we are used to see RAM with PCs, since PCs don't cache apps that are not running.
In Android, the apps are cached so they are easier to access the next time you need them. This is specially useful for apps like Contacts, Dialer, etc. Remember that everything in Android is an application.
My phone yesterday had only 80Mb free and yet it was quite snappy, very responsive.
So, in short forget about RAM in Android devices. We gotta get rid of the old paradigm of how RAM works in a tradicional PC.
I want something that feels a bit quicker, can anyone recommend a nice rom that's like stock but lighter? My current model shown below...

I have the same symptoms with stock JB. I updated my G3 via Kies. Any ideas how to speed it up without wiping everything?
You can try Foxhound Rom Essentials Version which has a lot of things removed that aren't needed (Like S Voice, Samsung Apps, Bloatware etc). There's also Hyper Light rom (I think). Have a look in the rom section and look for roms that mention the word light.
I've got a awesome rom installed now... No Samsung crap.
Thanks for all the help peeps.

hi guys,
I got my S3 about 3 weeks ago, (a noob in android) i recently flashed the rom to an unbranded version because i hate the bloatware but one thing i noticed is that my ram is really high on the device and when scrolling through the homescreens there's sometimes a delay in response or goes to the next screen with lag. when i go to task manager my ram is always above 500mb of 779mb. Even when i clear the memory it goes down to about 400 but then comes back up.
what could be the issue. don't really have anything running in the background. i did download go keyboard and go sms pro but I'm pretty sure that is not the cause of it. it even happened when i had the branded version of the firmware installed.
any ideas?
Thanks
Go software is very laggy. But yeah I have very few running processes and have high ram usage. I don't know why. It was the same with my s2. But I'm not sure y your laggy. Mines a beast
Wipe cache?
it I do ever get laggy I just hold home button and swipe to end background running processes
Hope this helps mate.

thanks for your response mate,
Ive tried wiping cache stopping useless processes but even after that its still quite laggy and when i swipe to remove that even lags... pretty bizzare
RAM usage is supposed to be high. Please read the link in my signature. The lag must be something else. Possible drawing issue on whatever launcher you have.

The GPU may not be very good on the sIII, the GPU controls video, scrolling, animations, ect. But my guess would be that its just a badly coded ROM. Go on the forms for that ROM and see if its a common issue.

Have you tried:
Setting animation speed to 0.5 from 1.0 in settings/ development?
Enabling gpu rendering?
Setting maxheapsize=128 mb (from 256 mb) in build. prop?
Clear both caches, reset permissions, reboot
Also, removing all bloatware helps

you need to be rooted, edit /system/build.prop using root explorer or es explorer (the /system file system needs to be mounted read/write first)
you have to reset permissions from cwm (clockworkmod), again this needs root

Ive had GT-I9300 model for several weeks now. Got it from Expansys. Didnt really notice this problem up until 1-2 weeks ago and its been happening alot throughout the day. I even tried factory reset and the problem is still present. Im talking about apps force closing alot. If im on facebook and im multi tasking or just using facebook app trying to view pics etc the app will lag and it will force close..sometimes this gets so bad that phone restarts on its own...it def. doesnt feel like quadcore at all.. the whole phone is just very slugish. What can I do here. Thinking about selling it and get gnex if this continues to happen without any solution.

So you would blame GSIII if rogue apps from market FC? You should even mention the app names as bala said and whether you have restored data? This kind of half baked question will never get a proper answer
If you search the forums properly you will find alot of threads with advices how to remove the said sluggishness from your s3 via turning off certain settings like s voice and also heed the previous poster's warning about rogue apps.
When i turned off alot of unnecessary settings the lag came off and i can listen to music while playing HD games while having my facebook on the background.

I have had this ROM installed on my Galaxy s2 i777 for about 2 days. in this time, i have noticed that there is no way to clear RAM on it so when i am close to running out, the device starts to lag a lot and slows down. is there any way to clear the RAM? i know that the stock firmware has Program Monitor and i used that but this SuperNexus one doesnt have anything to clear my multitasking. Hi,
I have 3 issues. Hope somebody can help:
1: Phone operates too slow. For example when I go to menu, app icons take around 5 seconds to appear. Similarly when I go to home screen it takes the same lag. So much delay that I could capture the screen short. You can see that weather clock and alarm widgets didn't appear. I cleared cache several times n restarts but it works fine for few mins n then again becomes laggy.
2: Keyboard disappears after typing few letters and sometimes it takes several secs to get it back. Reappearing delay is may be related to the above problem of slow response but why it disappears in first place.
3: Battery doesn't charge despite the whole night charging. Its happens not do often but really bugging me. I noticed that whenever I get missed notifications like calls or msgs it stops charging. Not sure why it's happening.
Looking forward to some help from experts. Please note that I feel these problems are occurring more after recent update. I'm using stock Rom of intl s3 version.

I am also on XXBLFB and facing no such issues. You should check if some app is not eating a lot of RAM.
Jelly Bean won't be available for this region anytime soon keeping in view the time it took S2 to receive ICS update here.
I suspect the same. my RAM doesn't go below 600mb even if I close all apps and clear ram from task manager. After restart, phone behaves well for an hour but then again becomes laggy. My S2 is much faster than this with lot more apps. This S3 is really disappointing me.

my suggestion is to do a factory reset (after backing up your contacts, messages, notes etc). then download your apps again and note the behavior of phone after each app. You might find the culprit then. It doesn't seem like an issue with the update since I also updated mine. Also very less likely its gonna be hardware issue.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Maybe the CPU is not working at its entire power. If the factory reset is not working, maybe you should go and replace the device, before it's too late. When you bought it ? If the phone have less than 30 days you should get an instant replace. Not sure that JB will help you, as the installation isn't like a "full format" of your phone
Hard reset: *2767*3855# (no warning message before formating, so type it when you're ready, also remove the sdcard if you don't want wiped too.)
Or *#*#7780#*#* - Factory data reset - Clears Google-account data, system and program settings and installed programs. system will not be deleted, and OEM programs, as well as My Documents (pictures, music, videos)
Thanks. Will get in touch with the vendor for replacement (though I'm sure he will not agree that easily) or else will do a complete reset. I'm really pissed off for spending this much for getting this device. Samsung is very serious in pushing their loyalists away!

Sometimes, there can be some errors. You know, nobody's perfect and we are all humans. After one week after I bought my phone, I found that it have sort of scratch on the screen, but looked like inside of it. It could be seen only in high light. The vendor replaced it instantly. This one is perfect. Love it and is extremely fast and I have many apps on it. Good luck!

Check in task manager, you should have an idea about how is going bad. Also change the antivirus for Avast. Avast is much better. However I recommend without antivirus. I just scan sometimes my phone with it or lookout but never leave the antivirus installed. Is just a waste of RAM memory.
If nothing works do a full backup with Kies and do the complete factory reset.
Most of the apps will be automatically reinstalled when you add back your Google account, but you need the backup for settings and saves.

Uninstalled several apps. Removed widgets from desktops. But still same issue. One thing I'm not able to figure out is why my RAM doesn't go below ~600mb despite killing every task n cleaning cache. I guest a factory reset and ROM installation is the only way out. Thanks guys for all the tips.

Even with all the apps I have on my phone the RAM usage is around 580-640 (stupid SwiftKey using 45 mb most of time) and when I kill the apps I have 430 mb, slowly increasing til 530. Try reset, you have nothing to lose.

I wouldn't imagine so, mores to the point why would you want to do something as crazy as that, JB is much better all round that ICS.

When are you experiencing lag? I found using a different launcher resolved all my lag problems, as loading the app drawer and flicking between home screens in Touchwizz was a bit crap for me. There are so many things you can do rather than take a step back to ICS......seems a bit extreme to me!
you can try it, but I reckon system data might cause conflicts....better to back up with titanium, do a clean install/reinstall apps and data/restore call logs and sms etc via .xml method and any other data(system) just restore 1 at a time to see if it causes any conflicts
I think youd have more force closes if you downgraded without wipe. Best way to flash any rom and avoid issues is with a full wipe. Even for rom updates
