[Q][XU] A few (another) questions - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Hello everybody! I'm about to buy an Xperia U, and I have a few questions about bootloader, CWM and phone models.
I used to have a SGM which didn't have bootloader, locked and unlocked stuff, so i'm kinda lost here.
1-I see that there are some tutorials to unlock bootloader. Ok, if I unlock it, will there be any differences? Is it really needed?
2- There is CWM for locked bootloaders, but if i'm gonna flash some ROM, it will have to be for locked bootloaders or I can use any ROM after having CWM?
3- CWM backups Stock ROM?
4- Any physical differences between St25a and St25i? Can I flash a St25a ROM in a St25i phone?
5- If I update Xperia U from GB to ICS via official sony software, I can unlock bootloader after updating or I need to do it while on Gingerbread? Or I'll have to unlock bootloader while on Gingerbread and then flash official ICS ROM via Flashtool?
I guess that's it, if I remember something more i'll ask.
Thanks in advance
Sorry for my english
EDIT: Wait, Titanium Backup doesn't work on locked bootloader?

1.Unlocked Bootloader is not needed unless you are to install custom roms, kernels and stuff. It doesn't make difference in performance.
2.NO,you can only use roms which are for locked bootloaders.
3.It backups all the data of stock rom.if you want to revert to stock rom again you will have to flash it.
4.Don't know about physical diff, and also not sure about flashing st25a on st25i.it may harm your handset.but only difference is in baseband.
5.you can unlock whenever you want. But I guess once you unlock bootloader you can't use pcc or sus.(pc companion and sony update service) for updating your phone. But again, you can relock your bootloader anytime.
If you are going to flash it via flashtool you will need to unlock the bootloader first.
Told you all I know.if I helped anyhow hit thanks.
I am also a noob.so,if I am wrong anyone can correct me.

1. Leave it locked, safer until you get used to messing around with the device.
2. You can only use Rom's for locked bl.
3. Yes, with all your apps and data.
4. I have st25a on my st25i, no hardware difference.
5. Unlock bootloader on 2.3 or 4.1, you can only root with ICS afaik.
Also be aware that most sim locked Xperias cannot unlock bootloader ever, get yourself a sim free device if want unlocked bl.

[Q] Quick question about bootloader

Hey guys, I'm gonna get a brand new Xperia X10 Mini Pro in a few days. I wanna install MiniCM7-2.1.9, and to use that rom I also need to install the nAa kernel, which requires an unlocked bootloader.
So my question is, say if I need to revert everything back to stock (rom, kernel, lock bootloader), for warranty purposes for example. Well, I know that the kernel and rom can be flashed back to stock using flashtool or SEUS, but what about the bootloader?
If I remember correct, you have to lock the bootloader first or else an unlocked bootloader won't work with a stock rom & kernel, which will result in a hard brick right?

Bootloader cannot be locked again. So if you are unlucky, you will get brick and lose garanty. =)

Yes, sorry, i am used outdating info((
ya I did my research and S1Tool can re-lock the bootloader. But am I correct though? My question wasn't really answered...
You have to flash back to stock rom and stock kernel if you want to re-lock your bootloader. Just when you're on stock rom/kernel, then you can safely re-lock your bootloader.

[Q] How to update when bootloader is unlocked Lww

I have WT19i and i have unlocked the bootloader official method. Now i flashed .58 firmware and now i wanna update to .62 but i have read somewhere that after unlocking bootloader if u update the phone gets brick.
So any solution?
If i flash .62 firmware directly then would i get root access too?
cause i have root access in .58

If you have stock kernel, just relock the bootloader. Making update directly from phone with unlocked bootloader causes brick indeed.
First relock the bootloader, then make update directly from the phone(3G or WiFi) to .62.
Relocking is written in my tutorial, check there if you need help how to do it.
If I relock bootloader, the process perform a wipe same as when I unlock via Sony Official Method ?
I want relock my bootloader, but with no wipe =D
(using stock kernel and stock .58FW)
Dont forget that wipe is best thing what you can do before upgrade to ics

I have Rage Kernel installed, so now what to do?
Or shall i flash a custom rom?
and one more thing, if i install custom rom then would i be able to upgrade to ics easily?

Your question is already answered, on the ICS stuff. Reload original firmware just to be sure prior update, always perform clean wipe when shifting ROMS so as to avoid un-pleasant experience and make most of it.

ICS ROM and Questions

Hey
Currently have a rooted Xperia Mini Pro on 2.3 Gingerbread but it seems the official ICS 4.0 update won't be coming to my SI number so I have a few questions. I have decided to install a custom ICS ROM on my phone so would like it to be as fast as possible and very stable. So got a few questions for you.
My phone is rooted, do I flash Clockwork Mod onto it and then clear the data etc and flash the new ROM?
How do I unlock the bootloader and can I relock it later? Any easy method? And if I need to do this, do I do it before flashing the recovery?
I have apps installed on my SD Card. I know the ones installed on my phone will be wiped and I can re-install those few but will the large games and apks installed on my SD card be wiped too? Or will they still show up in the menu?
Do I flash the kernel that I'll need the same way as the ROM too?
And finally the most important question: which the quickest ICS ROM for the SK17i?
Thanks a lot in advance
There is 2 ways to unlock the bootloader, one official and one non official. I used the official http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/ the other one you have to find on the forum. Both is possible to relock bootloader by flashing a ftf file thru flashtool.
Kernel is flashed thru flashtool and the rom thru cwm thats usually included in the kernel.
Apps on your SD card will not show on the new custom rom as the phone doesnt know that you have them installed so you will have to reinstall (or use titanium backup).
First of all I tried the official ICS on my SK17i and I didn't like it, it's alot slower than the GB with no super feauters that deserve it
I am now using the MiniCMSandwich Lite ROM. IT'S SOOO great and working very will. You can find it in a thread here.
Follow the instruction in the thread.
If u unlocked bootloader u can relock it but if u decided to unlock it follow the testpoint method not the official one because it's better.
Anyway .. Installing the official ICS or th ROM I told u don't need unlocking bootloader so don't unlock it.
If u want to root ur ICS u have to read that before Updating to ICS

Right firstly I decided to attempt to unlock my bootloader. It turns out for some reason I cannot unlock it (says not allowed in the menu). So suddenly a lot of the good ROMS are out of the question.
I have decided on the below ROM as Tayyar states that I don't need an unlocked bootloader. I know how to flash the ROM etc but how would I flash the Kernel? Or would it automatically flash with the ROM? I remember reading somewhere an unlocked bootloader is a MUST to flash the ICS Kernels hence my question
The official update has also not been made available for my phone and I doubt it will be so I will stick to my current version and flash the ROM now
About the apps on the SD Card, how should I go about it then? Should I get Titanium Backup and then do what with it? I have quite a few apps, it would be very annoying to need to re-install all of these.
Thanks a lot
Since your phone is rooted, try editing the region codes/CDA strings in /system/build.prop to a CDA code/SI number that has the ICS update. I did this myself when I reflashed my phone to get root on GB. I connected using Sony Update Service and was able to get stock ICS customized for my country using "CUSTOMIZED PH WORLD I 1254-1952"
What I changed was the CDA strings inside:
ro.product.name
ro.build.fingerprint
ro.semc.version.cust
You do not have to replace the whole value, just the XXXX-XXXX CDA string you already have there.
More info on these XDA threads:
[SOLVED] force update by editing build.prop, Also: [WIP] list of CDA strings!
Here's a list of available WT19 CDA codes for different countries/regions.

Titanium Backup is always a great app to use. Only caveat is, you might want to manually restore apps instead of doing a batch restore; some of them might not work with the jump from GB to ICS. Also it would cause a lot of trouble if you try to restore Contacts Storage from a GB ROM to an ICS ROM. Just stating my personal experience

Kernels can only be flashed with an unlocked bootloader. Kernels get only flashed via fastboot mode. A cwm flash is not possible at the moment.
You can flash custom roms via cwm. Your bootloader is locked, so you have to look that your choosen rom is compatible with your bootloader.

I think you could unlock it via the testpoint method, if it says it's not unlockable.

My friend, ICS for Xperia mini/minipro sucks.. Its was slow compared to GB. I've tried all the tweaks, hack and other bullshits.. now i am back to GB. and i am very happy i did. But if you really want ICS, then Minicms/CM9 is the best choice.

[Q] Whats the easiest way to downgrade?

Guys, i have Xperia Sola ICS stock rom with root. I downloaded GB 184 for sola.
1. Can i downgrade to GB without unlocking bootloader? (with flash tool for example)

And if so can someone guide me to how can i do it, thread may be?
Thank you

1. Yes u can, with GB ftf file.
2. If u think on ROMs like CyanogenMod ROM answer is no, u must first unlock ur BL.
1. Of course u can, just download the file and flash it with flashtool
2. Some custom rom need unlock bootloaders to be installed, but another rom no need that.
I think if u want to install more custom rom, mod, root and etc, unlock bl is the best way

Guys, thank you very much. I succesfully downgraded to GB official stock ROM.
Now my last but very important question is - i dont like GB and i still dont like ICS (i downgraded only because of better battery life in GB), but i want to test some custom ROM (like AOKP rom posted in Sola section).
As much as i red i can not flash this ROM without unlocking the bootloader and installing CWM on my phone, is that right?
Actually the question i wanted to ask was - if i unlock bootloader can i flash custom rom with Flash Tool or i can flash only with CWM (which i dont know but i dont want to use)?

[Q] Stock rom from CM

Hi!
I have only a little question. I have CyanogenMod 9 on WT19i (LiveWithWalkman). Of course I have unlocked bootloader. I want to go back to stock ROM and unlock bootloader. I have to only flash old ftf .62 and flash relocking file or it is more complicated?

You are mistaking with the meaning of unlock/locked boot loader. Phone comes with locked boot loader then it is unlocked for full throttle. If u want to go back to stock u dont have to relock the boot loader again. Just flash any ics kernel & then stock rom. Or u dont have to flash a kernel if u are gonna flash a ftf
Sorry!
Sorry. Very stupid mistake . UNLOCKED

Yes just flash the ftf and if you want to root, just flash a prerooted kernel for gingerbread, but stock kernel will be flashed with the ftf :good:
Thread moved. All questions belong in Q&A not General.
