I just got this working and I thought I'd share how:
Back up everything and root your device. See instructions elsewhere.
Install a root capable file manager. I used Root Explorer.
Get a copy of Nova Launcher. I used the one from my AOKP prebuilts folder. You could get it from the market and copy it out of /data/app/
Using your file manager, mount /system r/w and put the launcher in /system/app/. I put my Superuser.apk there too while i was at it.
Change permissions to rw-r--r--
Profit!
I tried this on a whim and it worked like a champ. Let me know if I've forgotten anything, and also if this works with Apex. I'm sure others will be curious. Also, both Nova and the default launchers have an icon in the app drawer, so its very easy to switch back an forth.
Many other applications work the same way. Keyboards included

Download the app from the play store. It will not show up in your app drawer at first. Using your file manager go to data/app folder, the apk will be there(though it will have a strange name, it is actually the name of the co. that developed it). Then move to system/app folder. You do not have to change permissions as they are already right. This is a much safer way to do this because 1-you are not downloading third party, 2-you do not have to mess with the permissions and take a chance of messing something up.

Didn't work for me at first either. I copied the Nova Launcher APK file from my phone and copied it directly into the System\App folder, changed the permissions. Then rebooted the tablet. After unlocking the screen I was prompted to pick a launcher, I choose Nova and it would crash right away.
I think the OP might have left out the step to install the Nova Launcher. I went back to the System\App folder, double tapped the APK file to install it. Now it's working.
---------- Post added at 11:44 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:42 PM ----------
Haha. Nova doesn't seem to be flawless though. I can't move icons. If I tap and hold an icon, the screen flips upside down. Weird.

Thank you thank you thank you!!! I was starting to think I messed up something because I couldn't get any launchers to work besides go launcher and apex, without crashing. It was because I was changing the permissions!!! Now everything works fine

As we all know, you can morph third-party apps in /data/app
would i be able to move a market app to /system/app and then morph it? has anyone attempted this?
Why would you need to move an app to /system/app? To stop it from upgrading? You can only accomplish it by a shell script or something.

i wish....stericson had said a couple months ago that he was working on it to function for /data/app, but there's been no follow-up on that yet
I've made morphs for market apps on several occasions...the most recent was changing the background on my meridian music widget.
To answer your questions, it works without causing any problems to the functionality of the app itself, nor have I had any issues from applying the morph with the apk still located in data/app. But, you will get errors when trying to apply an update through the market. This also screws things up when you have lots of updates and try to "update all." The updates will work fine until the market tries to update the one you modified, then all apps it tries to update after that will also come back with errors.
Since I don't check for updates often, I need that "update all" button to work properly - so I solved the problem by using Titanium Backup to detach the modified apps from the market. The downside is you won't see if an update is available, but an update would require you to uninstall, reinstall, then reapply the morph. Most updates aren't critical enough to go through that hassle...imo.
Hope that helps!

did you use metamorph, or ninjamorph for this? im assuming you use ninjamorph to unzip, make your changes, rezipped, signed, and installed? im trying to bypass the signing/reinstalling because ever since i upgraded to froyo "signapktic" no longer works for me, so i cant sign apps on my phone.
thats the beauty of metamorph is that you can change images without needing to take all those extra steps.
i was certain you caouldnt metamorph an app in /data/app....

Nope, used Metamorph. Never messed with Ninjamorph.
I actually do most of the work on my phone, so no need to unzip/rezip/unzip. Once it's unzipped on my phone I write/modify the xml file and move around the images to the folders they need to be in - all using Root Explorer.
For example, yesterday I tried applying MotorJohnny's Swype morph, but it didn't work because my Swype Beta had been installed in data/app and was "com.swype.android...something.apk" instead of "Swype.apk" in the system/app. So, all that was necessary was to modify the xml file to the correct filepath, folders, and apk name. Voila, worked like a charm. (well, the morph did...the buttons were a little screwed up having applied to to Swype beta haha): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13670377&postcount=42

Yeah Top, I know you can use note pad, but im very curious how you edit xml.s without a pc. I have ported whole themes using ninjamorph and zip themer but any xml I had to edit had to be done on my comp. Even if I used ninjamorph to extract the .xml, I could never edit it on phone alone. The Xml would just look like garbled code...i will check out silveredit tho.....If you get a chance check out Xml engine..just search in market It looks promising but is still in alpha....thanks

Or get ahold of a metamorph zip. Prefferable a whole theme zip. You want the control file.....now rename the zip to .apk using root explorer, then use ninjamorph to decompile your new .apk file and delete everything in it except the .xml control file. Now take your new .png files and add them to the decompiled .apk in the correct folder or you may move whole folders if you like. After you have all your files in place use ninjamorph to recompile but dont choose to replace exsisting. Just hit no. this will leave your .apk in the workspace folder of ninjamorph. Go into root explorer and rename it back to .zip and move it to root of sd. Now go into zip themer and choose that zip file. Now change the output to /sd/whatever.zip, now hit build. Zip themer will build you a CWM flashable zip with all the mods for whatever apk.s you included using the exsisting files on your phone....not the easiest way and I wouldnt reccommend it just to theme 1 app. But if you want to theme multiple apk.s, even the ones ninjamorph cant theme like Swype and apps in data folder It works flawlessly....sounds like alot but literally takes 5min using root exp to move whole groups of .pngs instead of 1 at a time with ninjamorph and this can all be done without a computer.

I find it easier to just adb install it since my GT is already connected to the computer and I'm on the computer. No need to take all the extra time to move to SD card, open an app, move the file to system, then install it.
For those of you who don't know how to do this:
1. Connect the device to your computer with USB Debugging enabled
2. Open command prompt and type "cd c:\android-sdk\platform-tools" (or wherever your Android SDK adb files are)
3. Type "adb devices" and make sure it's reading your device
4. Put the .apk into the root of your C: drive if you haven't already. (of course you don't HAVE to if you know what you're doing and are comfortable doing it)
5. Type in command prompt "adb install c:\Facebook_for_Android_1.5.4.apk"
6. Wait for it to install successfully, unplug your device, and you should have the App in your App Drawer.
Note1: If you already have a facebook app installed, you might have to uninstall before doing this.
Note2: Don't add the quotes when typing in Command Prompt, just type what's inside the quotes.

Why would it matter at all if you install this normally or push into system/app? I don't think with an app like FB that it matters...installing the apk normally seems to be the same as getting it from the Market..

Here is video proof that it works http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhR01RvrZ_I&feature=youtu.be
Just so you know if you rename you email app to Gmail its still the email app regardless of name. Same with the vending and phonesky.apk you need the right app and that's for galaxy s

No your wrong. Vending.apk is for Gingerbread. This is a link to the last page of the thread that this came from and if you read it it will say you have to change it from Vending.apk to Phonesky.apk for it to work after rebooting on ICS. Before you say something you are totally wrong about you could have just googled "Phonesky.apk" and anywhere you look on any site about Vending.apk it will tell you to rename it to Phonesky.apk cause it is ICS standard. Yes its the same app but if you put Vending.apk in system/app it will mot work on ICS unless you change the name to Phonesky.apk.

Not sure why its not working. I put Vending.apk in the system/app folder rebooted and it worked. I would have never made this thread if I had not tried it myself and made sure it worked. I hope you can get it to work. It says its multi dpi and I am using 240 dpi and it just works.
Had no problems here. Works good

For people that enjoy the original Android applications, here are some of the applications you can use.
Included above are the following:
Browser.apk
Gallery.apk
Clock.apk
Calculator.apk
LiveWallpaperPicker.apk
All of these applications need to be moved to system/app which means root is required and make sure permissions are rw-r-r. All of these applications, listed work fine as far as I can see. Enjoy these applications. Ask for help if needed. As always please be careful.
They work great. Thanks!
thanksss ..
Thanks !!!!!
*Update* added LiveWallpapersPicker.apk*
If you need any help installing any of these applications, ask here. If you need help installing Live Wallpapers, follow my post over here.

The files still are downloading as .apk and not .zip. Are you using a mobile device to download them? Try using Firefox to download them then transfer to your Fire, and install. I've replied to your message you sent me as well.
Thanks for these!

It doesn't work correctly with the device, due to the amazon setup. I'm sure it could be worked out though. I just didn't see it worth it.

Easy peasy. Freeze the amazon calendar. Just keep the other calendar provider apk.
But yes, i agree 100%… it's not worth it at all really

I can't get the browser to work. I'm rooted I moved the apk to system/app and permissions are set. After a reboot the app doesn't show up on the app list. What did I miss?
Edit: icon shows up in adw ex.

It may be the launcher you are using, I've noticed that some things do not work with different browsers, that is at least what other users are reporting. Im using Nova Launcher Prime, try a different one to see if it works.
any solution to the gallery app being unable to save cropped photos thus unable to set wallpaper?
Seriously, thank you so much! I can set my wallpaper to the pictures I have on my Kindle Also I'm using Go Launcher Ex and its working well with the crop/wallpaper function.

Just install gallery.apk provided in this forum and you will be able to set any picture you have as wallpaper.
