After 7 or 8 months of ownership, I'm very happy - HTC EVO 3D

I have the European version of the phone, (3G) and for all the whining, moaning, infighting, complaining... I have to say, this is one of the best phones I've ever owned.
With complex devices like these, there are always little niggles (like very rarely loosing data connection and not being able to get it back without a reset), but aside from that, it's been an outstanding phone, never failed on me, good battery life, decent performance, never goes 'slow'/laggy etc. It's taken everything I can throw at it and kept working.
Before it had ICS, I wasn't that impressed, but after the HTC ICS update (months ago now), it just got better.. much much better.
I flashed the hell out of my TG01, and LG O2X.. but this, I can honestly say I just haven't felt the need to do it, it does everything I want without an issue.
Would I recommend this phone, even given it's EOL now? Yes, I would.
Thank you HTC. (even though I'm still not sold on 'Sense')

I have had my EVO 3D since the month it was released and I have loved it from the day I got it. The phone stock was nice, but once root was available, it was amazing! One of my favorite android phones to flash and play with(I flash for a lot of friends and family).
I feel like it has excellent build quality, I have dropped it a few times and even threw it at a wall once(Never before, Never again), and it still works perfectly. I do have a screen protector on it, but no case. My only complaint is the paint on the bezels wears off, fairly easily it seems.
I am hoping that by the time they release the next Evo I will be able to afford the upgrade.

I loved my evo 3d for the most part but the damn thing seems to fall apart on its own. The biggest issue is a major one. Take off your back cover, and plug in your headphones. Now give it a little wiggle. The entire headphone jack is only supported by its tiny solder points, and will eventually fail because of this. That and it seems a lot of them have either the bezel's glue come off, or have digitizer problems.
Besides all that though, I really did like how smooth it ran and the battery life.
I had it replaced with an e4gt though because the headphone jack problem was way too big of one to overlook. My OG Evo had the same issue, but at least with that phone it was a bit more secure.

From HTC EVO 3D with love ^_^ Hoping that HTC will upgrade Jelly Bean to this amazing phone ^_^

I love my evo 3d as well. Great phone.

I just LOVE this phone (the first smartphone i own. I just love these overclocking options....My classmates managed to overclock about 200mhz extra on their crappy cheap phones while i managed to overclock until 1.8 ghz(even left it overnight with that clock and the only thing was that it got a little warm).
Oh and about the htc sense...The Sense 4.1 has REALLY improved on our evo's...its supersmooth and almost buggless

Yup my favorite phone for sprint.

Wow, I'm so glad I ignored all the negative vibe, this phone is great !!

This phone is running great for me.
Speaker is FINE !! (maybe just a tad lower, but it's clear and loud enough).
Signal seems the same as EVO 4G (maybe, just maybe a tad lower, but good enough).
Camera (2D) quality is also fine. I don't know what happened comparing in the store with 4G but camera is good (except the darn thing does hang). And I wish it had panorama like my 4G with MikG ROM had. But I expect that will come and there are 3rd party apps for that.
3D Screen (in 3D) is pretty impressive. As well as the 3D camera. Don't know how much I'll use it but it is quite impressive.
Fast, tons of memory.
Everything I care about, so far works (except camera hang).
Battery looks promising, need more time on that.
I did like the wider screen on 4G. But it always felt wide in the hand.
All my apps automatically restored, including WIFI settings !!
Power/Volume buttons don't feel mushy to me. Not quite as crisp, but fine.
It has a real nice feel to it. I did like the shiny edge on 4G though. But I really like the grippy back on 3D.
I like how speaker and camera are not embedded in the screen.
So many little things that break when folks try to lift things from different ROMs that this all has working.
It fits perfectly in my Car ProClip for 4G.
Camera button is nice.
Only feature I really really want from root is WIFI Tether (not adhoc either). Meanwhile PDANet USB tether will cover the times I need tether.
4G was really weak with 2.2 Stock and having what is stock today on new phones it's understandable to want root. But it's so hard to get everything working. Maybe I'll want new features in 6 months that requires root. We'll see.
This was essentially a free upgrade (maybe even some profit). By Selling 4G.
If you're on the fence I don't think you'll be disappointed coming from a 4G (even rooted 4G).
With properly written applications, the higher dot pitch is not a problem. I had to bump browser up in font size. Everything else so far looks the same except Icons are a bit smaller and status bar.
It is refreshing to see there are people who enjoy it instead of ones who complain. A lot of users are very happy ( I know 6 with it, and they are very happy with it) with it and we simply don't post here becuase we really don't have to.
I love it too. I haven't had any of he issues people complain about. Well...that's a lie I guess. I had the green tint on low-light pictures with the flash, but then I learned to turn off auto-lighting and set it for the correct setting of the room and that problem went away.
Is simply best phone out there so.far

I wish I could say the same. I only had ONE issue with my first one. Cracked screen that came with the phone. Weird. Got my new one and I love it.
Yea, I love my 3vo. Only issue I've had is the green tint thing on pics but I'm hoping that'll get fixed with a software update. If not, I'll exchange it for a new one.
Love my 3D! Even the iPhone fans have trouble keeping their eyes off it!

the predominant vibe on XDA for the few months or so has been negative, so, people need to just take what they read here with a grain of sand..
This phone is great; I loved my 4G, and, when we get root with the 3D, it will definitely be the #1 phone out there now...
I had to return my first one, due to some goofy software issues, but, the replacement is fantastic, and, as more accessories come out for it, it will be an even better experience.

Verizon ****ed me over, jumped to Sprint. Went from a Thunderbolt to an Evo 3D, and I love this thing way more than my Thunderbolt. I do miss the kickstand, and I'm sad to not see extended battery cases with one, but otherwise I'm loving every second of use!
Sprint has been treating me well too.
The main thing I had with other phones I ever had was they fell really bad in my expectations for them. This phone has surpassed my high ones..people see it and they say...its a phone also...WOW...
No problems here with my 3VO
Bringing up issues on a Forum your having with (whatever) doesn't mean your being 'negative'. The majority of threads have been solution oriented...ONCE you pic out all the posts by those who have to come in and say your being negative!
I agree btw, it is a sweet device.
Love mine too, no green flash, no dead pixels, no complaints here
I love mine too, I have little light bleed on the bottom, bunch of my friends have the same thing, all 4 of them. so I didn't wanna waste my time on an exchange because I was afraid of getting one with other probelms. it is only visible at night in dark sorroundings, during the day I cant see it though. My friend told me to get a life and stop being picky lol when I mentioned the light bleed. He told me nothing is perfect in life, haha. I honestly dont even notice it in a bad way anymore, if the lights on the bottom werent so damn bright it wouldnt be there. At the end I love everything about the phone.

Are you happy with your Atrix?

I just got a Thrill 4G and Im thinking about trading it in for an Atrix. The phone is great but the battery life sucks, and I cannot see the 3D screen with sun glasses on. I live in AZ so they are on every time I go outside so that is an important deciding factor for me.
The Atrix is $49 today so Im thinking about getting one. I'd love to hold out for the SGS2, but who knows when it will be out and it will prob be $199.
So, would you buy an Atrix again if you had to do it over again?
If I wouldn't of had to sell my first ATRIX I wouldn't have. My fave phone!
Tapped from my ATRIX.
No-brainer imo --- the atrix is FAR superior; I'll admit that with stock gingerbread the phone is kinda meh....still an awesome phone but nothing mindblowing. I assume since you're here you'll be unlocking and flashing it...which makes the phone AMAZING. The 3-D stuff just seems so gimmicky to me and won't be perfected/well-implemented for a good amount of time to come.
As far as the SGS2, on paper it looks like an amazing phone but I'll have to wait to see - I had the captivate and was so disappointed with it (anyone that had that phone from the beginning knows how horrendous Samsung's support was). I hope that Samsung has learned a lot since the beginning of the GS line because a phone with such amazing hardware shouldn't have so many problems.

I actually know exactly what you mean because I bought my Captivate a couple days after it was released. I still have it, dont use it, but I was really happy with it after flashing ROMS on it. The development forum on that phone is fantastic.
Yes, I would never have a stock phone. Did they ever get the bootloader unlocked on this phone? I know that was the major reason that people hesitated to get it.
i love my atrix. nothing out there is better to me. im running CM7 beta on it right now. so fast.
With CM7 , everything is happy
Love it, fast, nice camera, nice speaker, good gaming performance with THD games, great community.

I didn't miss it because I wasn't looking for it. I don't have an Atrix and was asking a question.
Everything I've read says that the Atrix also has poor battery life. I saw a thread on a battery calibration and mod that is supposed to help. I dont want to trade ina phone with bad battery life for another phone with bad battery life.
Both have a dual core CPU but the Atrix has 1GB of RAM which is nice IMO. I cant see the Thrill 3D screen with sunglasses on which sucks to me. The 3D is very gimmicky and hurts my eyes, lol. And there is only one ROM and the dev's seems to be bailing on this phone so I don't see a very good future in the Thrill dev threads.

Bad battery life reports are the vocal minority. Most of us here consider the battery to be one of the Atrix's strong points. I can get 2 1/2 days with light usage on mine with CM7 installed on it. Thats with wifi set to never sleep, and with GPS and 3G/HSPA enabled.
I love the Atrix. Literally the only problem I have with it is the pentile display, and even then its a very minor issue.
It has a 1930mAh and all the review sites i've read say the battery life is very good. Flashing a custom rom will make it even better! People have been getting like 16-24 hrs with Wifi and everything on, constantly browsing the internet and playing games (read it on youtube)
This is my first Android phone. Came from 4 years with the iPhone. Ill tell you this...not looking back. This phone was great stock. Now running cm7, this thing is fuggin amazing... battery and performance are nothing short of great.

The Atrix is an incredibly solid device. Gotta give AT&T credit for getting a top-notch device out of Motorola.
well it sounds like you guys are quite happy with it. If the battery life is that great then it's a no-brainer for $49.99. I do believe hat Im gonna return my thrill today. It a cool phone, but im a power user and ROM flashing addict so it seems i'll fit right in.

Good choice. The only HTC that is a solid Atrix competitor on AT&T (candybar Android w/o keyboard) is the Inspire4G, but honestly, after several HTC devices and several Moto devices, HTC may come up with cool designs and features, but Moto is great at implementing reliable, high-performing designs. I've never gotten the "oh, that is cheap" feeling with a Moto phone, while Samsung and HTC . . . meh!
Typically find out people who are complaining about battery life have heavy usage that would have even worse battery life on other phones. You had a captivate like I did, so I can tell you this phones battery kicks the **** out of the captivates....and will be even more amazing should you decide to UV it.
If you want to see a GOD AWFUL battery, **** around with an HTC inspire for about 6 hours lol.
Anyway, I think you should at least give the Atrix a try and worst case scenario you don't like it you bring it back within the 30 day window (assuming you will have one).

I guess I'm the lone dissenter here. I'm not a fan of the Atrix. Maybe I got a lemon but it seems like there are a lot of problems.
The build quality is suspect. Dust and even a very small piece of cat hair has gotten under the screen. The back plate/battery cover feels cheap and creaks when I hold it. The GPS is rarely able to get a lock on my position, rendering it useless. Also, bluetooth connection is unreliable. I've tried 2 vehicle systems and 3 headsets. They are all able to pair fine, but lose connection in the middle of phone calls.
And if you've done research on the Atrix I'm sure you've read all about Motoblur and how ugly it makes the UI. It's all true. I'm on gingerbread and I have to say its hideous. The stock in-call screen, dialer and photo gallery all look like something designed by an elementary student.
Can you flash it and fix the ugliness of the UI? I'm not a techy but from what I've read the answer seems to be mixed. It would appear yes you can just as long as the OTA update of gingerbread has not been installed on the phone. If it has, you're either screwed or prepare to spend the next 3 years of your life reading up on how to hack the device.
On the positive side, believe everything you've seen about the Atrix's speed. By far the fastest phone I've ever used. The screen is nice and bright as well.

There are many options to get rid of the stock gingerbread Motoblur look. The obvious choice is CM7, which will do away with Blur entirely, and make your phone quite a bit quicker. Most themes available in XDA will get rid of the Blur look, and there is a huge selection in the App and Theme section. I use the ext4 Homebase Rom with his Honeycomb theme, and it significantly speeds up my phone.
I would recommend the Atrix over other Android phones for a few reasons. The biggest reason why I like it so much is because of the form factor. I like the 4 inch screen more than 4.3 or 4.5 or 9.3. Battery life has been pretty good, at least as good as I can reasonably expect from a smartphone. The hardware specs are comparable to any other Android device, and if you're willing to root and flash custom Roms, you will notice a marked improvement over stock performance (which I think is true of any Android phone). What really makes this phone as slick as it is are its accessories. I just bought the lapdock from Vancouver Craigslist for $150 and I love it. I knew when I bought it that it was kind of gimmicky (like the 3D from your Thrill), but for what I need this tool for, it's been outstanding. Nothing beats watching Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad on my hour commute to work while simultaneously charging my phone!
I love my Atrix, and it's a shame the phone got such a bad wrap off the bat due poor implementation of Blur on 2.2, and encrypted bootloader. Now with the unlocked bootloader and better blur, in addition to more and more custom roms being built, this phone is coming closer to its potential. I wish it had a metal back plate, but I understand the potential of worse reception and getting hotter than the plastic cover. All in all, the only phone I would remotely consider exchanging my Atrix for would be the Sensation, and even then I think I'd really have to be sold on the idea. I hope this helps with your decision.
Cm7 is a must on the atrix. I've tried other roms but none ever worked quite right. Annoying fc & other errors - but thanks to those devs for putting in the time & effort. Blur is complete crap: I couldn't even listen to my mp3s without the music stuttering bcuz the phone was busy searching for "suggestions" of similar songs I may like. Damn you, for the unwanted marketing on my device, at&t & Motorola. For a while, I very much regretted trading in my iPhone. But now all is well. Thank you cm7 devs!
So I just got my Atrix
It has 1.2.6 as a build on it, and from reading I'm not finding too much information on that build. I don't think that I want to do the OTA to 4.1.57 though because I keep reading about bricks. I'm going to put a ROM on it, more than likely CM7 so Im not sure what good it would do to update OTA. I'll have to root it though so I guess I can get on that first but all of the root guides are for 1.8.x and up.

Thinking of switching from galaxy nexus to resound. Quick questions.

Greetings earthlings. I was thinking about making the switch from the gnex to the rznd. I was wondering if there were any stock roms out there (no sense). Also how does flashing a rom work with s on? And finally anything else I should consider before making the switch?

You should consider that the Nexus sucks and the Rezound is amazing.
Just kidding, but the Rezound really is better. I've only had HTC phones, so I don't know how the Nexus flashes ROMs, but we can do it right in recovery. The only (small) hassle is that we have to flash kernels through the bootloader, but our devs have come a long way in simplifying that process. There are a few ROMs that are stripped of Sense as well.

Also, as best I understand it, you will not be able to flash alternate radios or splash screens.
As the responder above me indicated, there are no straight AOSP ROMs at this time. Check through the Android Development section and see if any of the "Senseless" ROMs fit your needs.

Having owned both the Nexus and the Rezound, I dumped the Nexus and went back to the Rezound. You won't regret it.
The Rezound was only unlocked last week so roms are a little limited at the moment. However, we have some great devs working on it.

I made the switch from a SGN.... I must say, your going to miss some things that the Nexus had (ICS), but your really going to love things the Rezound brings to the table. There are a handful of roms out now. I think the Senseless rom you'll have to install a 3rd party Launcher. I've come to really enjoy Sense... I;ve read about people wanting to get Sense off thousands of times... My only question is... Why? It actually functions quite awesome...
I'm quite happy with the Rezound, the Dev Support is great, and I'm almost positive there will be quite a few more by the 15th when everyone returns their Nexus because the Reception and speaker both are terrible!!
Good luck..
Don't forget the Rezound will be getting ICS soon as well. It's only a temporary loss.

Soon? More like next fall.
i too am thinking of switching from Gnexus to Rezound.
I think in a couple months the truth is going to come out that the Gnexus is actually quite a very subpar phone.
PenTile matrix display, abysmal battery life, and the extremely poor camera quality are enough to have me switch to the rezound.
here is my main concern though, what kind of battery life do you guys get? with my gnexus LTE enabled all day, i could only get about 2 hours of on-screen time. what about the rezound?
thanks in advanced.
Thanks for all the info! Does android wifi tether currently work with rooted rezounds? Also are speeds on lte better? (Noticed lower speeds on gnex)
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
yes wifi tether does work.
I currently just traded my GNEX for a Rezound.
Best choice I've made.
As the GNEX is a great phone.
The Rezound is just amazing.
You won't be upset if you do choose to trade up.
S-ON isn't too bad since we have root.
S-OFF would be ideal, but I'm plenty happy with what we have and is to come
I came from a GNEX and really, really like this phone. The thing that impressed me the most is the screen.
The GNEX has a big, beautiful screen but the colors seemed kind of washed out. The Rezound, the colors just pop and seem very vibrant. Greens are a brilliant green, red's are brilliant red. It's hard to explain, but it is very noticeable.
I also noticed a considerable difference in the camera quality on the Rezound compared to the GNEX. Sure, you're not going to take 20 photos in a second with the Rezound but you do get better quality pictures. Feature wise, both phones offer the same recording features/
I have flashed a couple roms, it was very easy and am very encouraged by the development work that is going on.
I'm one of those few people who actually like Sense, so I really do like what HTC has done with the UI. The ICS dialer pissed me off to no end, it was huge bulky and just seemed very.. blah. While the Sense dialer isn't better, it is at least a bit more functional.
One last thing I would throw out there is that I never knew about the UOT Kitchen (can't link yet, but search the forums and you'll find it) until I happened across a post in this forum. I have to say, it is one of the coolest and easiest ways to give your phone your own personal flair. I'm sure that ICS / GNEX will be supported on the Kitchen but for now, you at least get that benefit on the Rezound.
Anyway, hope this helps somewhat.

UOT kitchen ? Hmm have to search for that sounds like something fun to play with.

i too am thinking of switching from Gnexus to Rezound.

I can't give a good answer to that as my area isn't 4G... I have chargers everywhere in my house and at my office so Battery Life isn't such an issue for me. I have flashed two roms today and have been playing with it non-stop all day and I think it has been on the charger maybe two hours.. Maybe someone in a 4g area could respond to that better.. I do know that on a normal day, it is way way better than my Nexus... The batt life was HORRID on it.. On the Rezound I wouldn't consider getting the bigger battery, because the battery isn't that bad for me.. In 8 days of owning the SGN, my battery went dead 3x... Rezound hasn't gone dead yet..
I loved the SGN... I'll be the first to tell you.. If it had a louder speaker and a better reception, I'd still have it... But the rezound has a awesome speaker, and the reception is hands down as good as my Droid X or better...
Its a big decision for you to make.. I don't think you will be unhappy making the switch...
I made the switch. I miss ics miss
I don't miss the poor battery life.
I don't miss the loud signal in reno
I don't miss the soso camera
I don't miss the plastic cheap feel.
I have the bigger rezound battery. I haven't used it. The stock battery seems fine.
I love the camera.
It's really fast.
I think I like the 720 screen better on the rezound.
Beats is lame. The headphones are heavy and barely stay in my ears.
I'm not a fan of sense but I don't hate it.
I will keep the rezound. It just works.

I agree.
We have both phones on our corporate VZ account. I am in charge of that account and get my phones for free.
If I wanted a GN I could have one tomorrow, but I am not impressed with the GN AT ALL and I couldn't wait to get one for months before it was actually released.
I do like the huge screen size, I wish my Rezound had a 5" screen, but there is absolutely NOTHING ELSE I like about the GN.

For me it turned out to be more simple than I thought, I had been up for an upgrade for about 6 months (previous phone BB Curve). I was debating on specs and features of the Razr, GN, and Rezound. I would go back and fourth on what i really wanted. But as soon as I waled into the store and actually picked up the phone, i knew which one I wanted. Razr felt horrible in the hand and just down right uncomfortable (i am really not a thin kinda guy). GN felt as if even with a case it would break at even the smallest drop. But the RZ felt solid even w/o a case.
Even after looking at how the phones worked, it still went to the RZ. Now my decision was even more correct now that I have it fully rooted.
I get great battery life (for the type of phone)
Great platform for whatever I use my phone for
Great picture quality
and a VERY solid device that I have a feeling I will be happy with for 2 more years.

[Q] Upgrade

Hello people of XDA,
I currently have the HTC Thunderbolt and i absolutely love it. I have had it since release day and never had any problems with it. Since about December 2011 i've been playing the waiting game on when ICS will be released for the tbolt. The devs keep saying we will have it by next month, every month. Im starting to get tired of waiting so i was thinking of switching my phone since i have had my contract due for quite a while now. Ive been looking at the Droid Incredible 4G LTE for a while and love everything about it, i probably would have had it by now except i've got ONE problem, THE SCREEN IS ONLY 4". I know for a lot of people this is not a big deal and the phone is still awesome no matter what the screen size is but, why couldn't HTC just release us with this phone as a 4.7" screen instead like the new EVO. So I would like to know what you guys think about the phone. Is it worth the smaller screen and I should just get the phone or should I wait a little longer and see if HTC surprises Verizon with a stunning 4.7" screen phone of holiness?
I'm going to repost something i wrote last week in the general thread about this very thing, except about the Droid X to an Inc4
I got mine yesterday and unfortunately it has a hardware defect in the prox sensor, so I'm getting a replacement delivered to my door sat morning, go verizon!
However that sensor issue only affects phone usage while in a call so I've been playing with it quite a bit. I don't know how many people are coming from an much older device like me but i thought I'd share my exp so far.
I'm coming from a Droid X with Liberty flashed.
First impression was whoa this phone is small compared to the X. But as soon as i turned it on and started playing with it, the screen was so beautiful it didn't matter. The Inc screen is .3 inch's smaller but because of the higher resolution you actually gain screen real estate. The best part about the size though is my hip case is .5 inchs smaller, which doesn't sound like a lot but trust me it is!
Call quality is much better than my X as well. Perhaps it's just because the speaker on the X is 2 years old now but people sound much clearer to me on the Inc.
I haven't really had a chance to mess with the 4g data as i was on wifi when i setup my accounts. I will certainly play with that more when my new one shows up tomorrow.
The OS is extremely snappy, i haven't had a single hitch yet. I think i'd still prefer a AOSP rom once they come out but so far i love Sense 100 times more than Blur and will be happy to run it for the time being.
Last but not least, unlocking and rooting this thing was extremely simple, thanks most in part to our excellent devs. I remember working on my X for an hour before i was ready to install a custom rom. Granted i was brand new to the scene, but getting custom recovery on the Inc just felt easier.
I'm extremely excited to start using this thing full time starting tomorrow!

Now that I've gotten to use it for almost a full week now I'm that much more glad i got one. I looked at the specs and the thunderbolt screen is the same size as the Droid X with an ever so slight reduction in resolution. I personally haven't noticed any difference with the screen size. In fact everything is so much more clear and crisp.
The 4g data is great as long as your in an area that supports it, although i'm on wifi 90% of the time. 4g is a little spotty around my house (most of the time 2 to 3 bars, i've seen it swap to 3g twice), but where i work it's full bars, and quite fast. Surfing the web vs my X is much quicker now.
As far as the speed of the phone it's like night and day from the X. I always felt the X wasn't as usable until i threw a custom rom on it. That made an amazing difference for me, and now using the Inc4 i get the feeling again and this is with a stock rom! I can only imagine how fast this thing will be once i finally pick a custom to stick with.
My reason for getting an Inc4 is a little different from yours. It was forced on me because my X's charge port is starting to die. I thought i'd be sad to see it go, but honestly once i got the Inc4, i couldn't go back

Wow u made this phone sound incredible, i think im going to check it out tomorrow and possibly buy it. I was waiting to see how the new iphone would turn out or if HTC releases anything new but i really dont care any more, this phone is stunning, although the lack of screen size it doesn't really bother me since once i get it i will probably forget that i even had a problem with the phone in general to begin with. Do u have any case recommendations for this phone and do u think the battery life is good or I should get an extended battery?
another question, tbh im only 14, do u think they would let me go in and buy it by myself if i have the money with me and i know all the information needed?????
So far the battery life has been quite good for my usage. I'd say it's on par with my X for the most part, although my X had a extended battery. I have yet to get an extended for the Inc4, but i don't know that i'll need to.
As far as being 14, i don't know, do you look 14? I'd say if your authorized on the account, and no one asks any questions there's no need to tell them your 14. It's not dishonest, your just not offering any extra info!
Then again i handle my company's business account so i deal with everything over the phone, i've stepped foot into a verizon store maybe once. Someone else might have better insight.
For cases I've never done the full body things like otterbox's or anything. I just use the standard leather hip pouchs, and a screen protector on the phone itself. Given i'm a sysadmin and sit on my ass 95% of the time it works for me

Back to my LGOG

About a year ago I got a really really good deal on a GS5. It wouldn't have been my choice under normal circumstances, but it was worth a try. There were some good things and some annoying things about it.
Last weekend I decided that I had enough of the annoying things, specifically around using the phone as a phone, which I had to do due to problems with my landline. When I thought about temporarily using my LGOG, I thought it might also be a good time to try a custom ROM, something I had shied away from previously since it was my only phone and I wasn't comfortable with the stability of what was available at the time.
So I went out and grabbed the freegee app and a stable Cyanogenmod release and it's like having a new phone again. 4.4.4 for now -- I was not in any hurry for Lollipop on the GS5 but it might be worth it on the LGOG.
I'll only really miss a few things about the GS5 - primarily the screen that I can read with polarized sunglasses, the multicolor status LED I can use with lightflow, and the camera - since I am now on KK on the LGOG. The performance of the LGOG is now comparable to what the GS5 felt like when it was new, and as of this afternoon with minimal tweaking I think I have the battery life under control. I really like the physical design of the LGOG better, and CM has answers for most of the stuff I'd tweaked on the GS5.
Agreed, I installed bliss pop on my lgog and It flies. I've always liked the design of the Optimus G. I might just put down my g3 for a few and use this.
Hey jdock,
Glad your enjoying the OG. I'm still using one after 1.5 years and its amazing. My biggest grip is that bcus I'm on T-Mobile I don't get lte. I after a custom ROM really makes a different especially the KK ones. Lollipop still eats a lot of battery for me so I think the phone has reached its limitation. Hopefully this phone can still get the support bcus it would suck to invest on another phone.

I have the LG Official Kitkat 4.4.2[stock] that was ported from the korean version of our phone and was slightly modified by Paulicat to install without the need to freegee after installation. The ROM runs very smooth. It would be perfect if I could figure out how to fix two issues. The first issue is an annoying data network setting prompt that happens when I boot up which tells me that I will incur additional data charges. There is a setting under mobile networks that is checked called "ask when data connected" Whenever I try to uncheck it it reverts back to being checked. The second is under access point names. There are two other apn there that I cannot delete for some reason. If I could figure out how to get rid of the incur data charges prompt when using data and delete the extra apn's, this ROM would be perfect.
LGOG has been one of the best phones I ever owned. LG abandoned it too quickly.
During a thunder storm, I ran from one building to another, not realizing my LGOG fell out of the holster and landed on the bottom front corner in the middle of the parking lot. I found it 30 minutes later face down, I thought that was the end. Nope! just a small (and I mean tiny ding) in the corner, Glass was perfect, without a scratch. I came back in the office and told everyone where I found it. They looked all sad and asked how the screen was. I replied "No problems, it's not an iPhone!" I have it for about 2.5 years the glass is still perfect, never had a screen protector on it.
Unfortunately, as much as I love this phone, I think mine has hit EOL. The battery, although it still gets me through the end of the day, is beginning to drain faster. That and I just picked up a LG Urbane (which I also like), and i think it would pair better with 5.1. I'm just having the hardest time trying to find a phone with the same great features. I just don't know why everyone is into the giant tablets for a phone, and if you want a smaller screen 5" or less, the specs are lousy.
Thanks to everyone on this forum that has helped me keep my LG up to date for the past 2.5 years. I may watch the forum and see if an official 5.1 or M comes out for the LGOG and it might be enough to make me return.
Anyway, didn't mean to steal the thread, I've just been thinking about switching for about three months, and then read the thread, thinking it may be me soon.
