From iPhone to Android - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

So I had my iPhone 4S (Jailbroken of course) for about a year and i got bored with it. Once my upgrade came I decided to give Android a try.
I need to know everrrrrryyyy thing about the Android. (not literally)
I think im rooted already, here are some screen shots to see what I am working with. (Got the phone 2 days ago)
I also am not sure if I am flashing the ROM's correctly, in my about it says i have Stock with Goodies ROM (downloaded here) but some of the features are missing, like landscape rosie and the power down options for recovery.
I also have no freaking clue what S-OFF and S-ON is so could someone explain that to me,
And
I also see alot of mods being implmented by txt editors codes n such, replacement of codes. Can I get a brief on that as well?
I really need gudiance, I did everything on my own and im not sure if I did any of it correctly. Ive been reading that MeanROM ICS is popular I had it but I switched to stock goodies.
My task list is as follows,
Install Stock ROM,
LazyPanda S-OFF,
ROOT,
Remove Tampered,
Install MeanROM ICS
How Do I acomplish this ^ in the correct order, from where im standing in my screenshots but note in the bootloader screenshot mine is UNLOCKED not locked

Here is a good introductory tutorial on the evo lte and android in general (thank om4):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1869377
It looks like your bootloader was unlocked at one point and then relocked. The good news is you have the right hboot version for s-off (1.12) so you should do that first. You'll need to do it with a ROM that's a 1.12 or 1.13 base though (not sure what base stock w/ goodies 2.16 is), so if that's not what you're currently running you'll need to unlock the bootloader first and flash one (like Fresh 5.1.1). S-off will give you full access to the phone's internal memory and allow you to flash anything, whereas only unlocking the bootloader and remaining s-on has some limitations. Read the first couple of posts in this thread to learn how:

Im upset to admit that ive been brainwashed by apple, and the Jail breaking community

At least you are honest about it. It is pretty sad to me, the love affair America has with Apple.

I agree. I went as far as starting a new line on my account and letting my roommate get a GS3 with it. He was such an IPhone lover to the max.
I rooted his Sammy (technically mine) and showed him how to flash ROMs, nandroid (backup up ROMs, for Op) and install themes, put apps in system, ect, and everything else you can do with an android. He loves that he made the switch and can't believe how much he was missing. He sends me new threads and gets so excited to show me his latest mods, ROMs, tweaks, ect.
Welcome to the world of android my friend. Love when I see someone who actually had an open mind and decided to try android. There's so much your gonna love and so much you can do with android.
You came to the right place with your questions and it looks like your questions have been answered already. You'll find we are a very close knit supportive community and just about anyone will help you with anything.
My biggest advice would be to read read read. That's what I did when I first started rooting phones years ago. (Cm7 on my cliq xt was my first modded phone ) and lastly before you post questions in development threads, do a quick search. Most questions are usually already answered and solutions are provided
Welcome to the community!! You can personally pm me with anything you need help with. Would be glad to help

I can't stand Apple, not only their stuff, but the Corporate bully that is Apple, only 500 billion in the bank for a rainy day, must be nice.
Android rules, but the best part of it is the support you find here. If you would like some color on your phone, I have 3 themes on evo 4g lte forum under the themes/apps section, I bet you can't do that with a rotton apple lol

Today is it..

I will finally be unlocking my rezound once I get home from school .... I'm so nervous I will brick it lol. Can someone suggest a noob friendly Rom to get started that has full functionality..I would like WiFi tether to work in infrastructure mode ..since I'm getting the vita next week. I know this question has been beaten to death but there were a lot of different threads with like different opinions and it would be easier if it is all just in this one thread for me. Thanks
I still have a stock Unrooted Rezound also..Will be watching this thread..so let me know your ups and downs..I might do this as well.

I really would stick to just rooted and debloated stock for now. If you reallly want a custom rom I think Scott's Clean rom's run well or Nil's business sense rom's just make sure you are downloading the Gingerbread versions. Make sure you read the threads to see about tethering since that is something i have never done so never paid attention to what works or doesn't with tethering.
P.S. unlocking is extremely easy, just follow the directions on the HTCdev site precisely and you will not have an issue. Also I would definately suggest sticking with Amon Ra for your recovery seems to have the least trouble right now. Clockwork official is really new to the rezound and I still seem to read threads that people have trouble with backups or restoring backups and sometimes even installing roms using it.
Stick to GB for now.
Read the threads and find out which one suites you best. Everyone has different tastes. Do your homework and you won't have problems.
To answer the question about tethering...the only infrastructure tethering to be found is on an ICS ROM. Unfortunately that's not "noob" friendly.
Yes- definitely read the entire threads of any ROMs you are considering so you will know what to expect as far as bugs and known issues.
Stick with Amon Ra recovery. There's an update coming with a fix if it's not already posted.
GB ROMs have ad-hoc tethering. ICS have infrastructure. But ICS ROMs are not fly functional so again- read entire threads to know what you're getting into.
I really like Ineffabilis GB. I would probably just use it with stock kernel though. I'm not seeing a benefit to using dsb although maybe I just need to play with CPU settings more.
This is my first smartphone and something that's really helped me is keeping a text file with notes on how to do everything so I don't have to search for info again when I need it. Also gathers lots of info from various threads in one place and makes it easier to learn everything. Seems it's quite different on this phone since it is still s-on.

Yeah, and a nervous excitement. I was fortunate that WasabiWa83 offered to stand by in chat in case anything went wrong. And a week or so later when I was reflashing a ROM and the phone gave me an error message in the middle of flashing saying it couldn't read my ext sd card I got stuck on the HTC splash screen and I didn't even panic, just went through the steps I had read about and all was good again.
So as long as you read and learn, once you've gone through everything you get comfortable since you know there's a way out of any trouble you may encounter.
Unlocking is simple and easy. Don't worry about bricking the phone man. I owned an Incredible before my Rezound and installed ROMs, radios, kernels, splash screens, you name it and never had a problem. Once you get the hang of flashing stuff and go through the initial process of botching something up and figuring out how to fix it, it becomes second nature and quite fun. Welcome to the unlocked world!
P.s. Nil's business gingersense and scott's roms are great for beginners. I suggest Nil's if you want a little bit of theming and scott's if you want more basic functionality. Stick with gingerbread for now, although the ICS roms that are out there are good enough to be daily drivers and I did run them for over a month, they do have their little kinks still.
Quit discouraging ICS roms. I haven't been on GB since 2 days after the first leak and aside from bluetooth and the occasional screen flicker, they work fine.
That said, sticking to GB for awhile might be a good idea. There are plenty of people always online here ready to help if you post in the general section. Just make sure to look at stickies and such for help. A good rooting guide written my myself is linked in my signature. It is the most simple of the guides an I have updated it for the newest firmware version.
For me not being unlocked and rooted >>I would say the reason I dont jump right away is not I'm scared or nervous..its the time and effort from going to a fully working phone to a phone that might be buggy to just get just a few perks. Plus not to mention the time it takes to try each ROM out,,gheez that the hard part!!
I personally would do it to get rid of the bloat ware that could be using my battery, What the OP is doing it for? I think the same reason as me. Unless he likes looking forward to the pain like the all of you.

I agree about ICS roms... they are awesome i like them over GB
If you want speed and battery with the stock look mainly, give cleanrom a shot! All the other GBs are themed beautifully and have have a lot of work put into them. I stayed away from ICS because I am OCD on bugs and theme issues such as 4g arrows but it ran very smoothly.

I've told others in various threads but i'll say it here cause it can't be stressed enough. *learn about flashing kernels aka boot.img*.. I would dare to say 70% of the threads in the Dev forum are cluttered with people who never learned about flashing rom kernels with adb or tools like cleanflash that make it easier. The super-noob guide in the dev section is your best friend.
Most folks are used to the kernel being totally packaged in with the rom zip and once you flash the rom zip you're good to go. That is not the case with this phone. Learn about it and save yourself many headaches.
Well I unlocked my phone and I think it's rooted..so I should stick to GB roms? Is ineffabilis good?

Ineffabilis is a GREAT GB Rom but to be honest they're all really good.
I think its good to start off with GB because you may run into usability issues with ICS that may cause issues for you. Flashing a GB will help you get your feet wet!

Ok guys, I have read other threads on this phone and I take it that its either been completely rooted already or is about to be rooted. Currently I have an Epic with Peoples Rom2.2 on it and shadow kernel, I'm hoping that the root process for this phone is as easy or easier than my Epic because next April I update and I'm thinking about the 4G LTE. I did find a couple of videos on it but so far nothing from ACS or qbking77. But I am still looking

Yes guys I said I'm thinking about it, only reason is Sprint won't let me upgrade till April of 2013.
the reason I was thinking about it is I know the EVO 3d is rooted cause a friend of mine has one it was a tossup since I prefer a rooted device, but since the 4GLTE is rooted my decision is made
Thanks shook187, for telling me its rooted, and thanks Dannydeez for the link, I'll book mark that for future reference.
I'm 49 years old so I'm not exactly the best at pones and computers although I can hold my own sometimes. I'm way better at fixing cars.

Don't mind the people who want to flame others. Some people just can't help flaming others for something they do not understand or agree with.
If you have a question just type it in the search bar at the top of the forum to see if someone else has already asked, and subsequently received an answer. If you don't find anything there that fits your specific situation then don't be afraid to start a new thread. If you do find an answer that works for you, even if it is within someone else's thread, then be sure to hit the thanks button at the bottom of that person's post.
Now THAT feature of the search bar I didn't know, but being on an Epic currently I haven't had to use that since Uber taught me how to root an epic LOL.
I watched the root videos on the HTC and apparently I won't be needing odin anymore when I upgrade, but since I don't have one yet I do have to ask, at all stock is that thing as good as what I read it is? I know the main reason I root is to have control of my phone, and add and remove junk apps and Sprint bloat ware that runs down the battery.
Also around here the only place that has 34g is a one block section in one part of the city and I think the courthouse has 4g, dunno I can't legally use a phone in there LOL. So after I root I'll be asking you guys what rom is best, I knwo better than to ask now cause somebody is currently making one that isn't out yet.

By the time you have an upgrade there will be a better phone out I'm sure. But if you want a sweet phone with a ton of development on it, this will be the phone to get once you upgrade. My suggestion is to follow root instructions word for word when you do it, that way you don't mess up your phone. Good luck...in the future. Lol

Thats what I hate about this world, At first I got the Samsung Moment, well when I got that there were 5 different kernels and so many roms I couldn't count them all LOL, So I FINALLY upgrade to an Epic, the first thing I have trouble with is deciding which Kernel I want to use and what rom will go best with it LOL.
When I upgrade I hope this one is still being produced cause by then you guys will probably have windows Vista ported over to it, and I have gotten used to having a variety of stuff to choose from to put on my phone
I would just go with whatever phone is newest then... not what's out right now. For all you know the next galaxy phone will be out. I know for sure the next nexus devices will be out and they will be better than this phone because they will be newer.

Um, the nexus is not running toichwiz. It runs stock android. Will have faster upgrades and will work fine unrooted. My nexus right now would work fine unrooted but I don't like how stock looks. That's why I'm a themer . Trust me, the next nexus will be your phone if you don't like Samsung touchwiz. It will be your best bet of an upgrade. IMO however its your money and your choice I just thought I'd help you make the smarter decision.

Really a Nexus works? THAT I( never knew, as for touchwiz....not me I'm more a Go launcher guy, I like the stock Gingerbread look , but Emotionless beast is pretty cool too. But my wife and youngest both have evo3d's and even unrooted those work as fast as my epic rooted.

LOL, you know that GO launcher works like CIQ right? It collects way more data than it needs to. Also stock android 4.0.4 is just as nice and sleek as stock android 2.3.7 like on older nexus devices. Its the same deal just upgraded. Yeah evo3d's are a disgrace... IMO but some people liked them. Like i said if you looking for a great stock non bloated phone right out of the box a nexus device is for you. There has been word that nexus's next year might be manufactored by multiple companies and not just Samsung. So if you really need an HTC this will be the best of both worlds. Im just saying, dont make your decision so soon especially since this phone will be old by the time your upgrade comes....

New to Android

Hello everyone I am new to Android world as of today. I've been on iPhone for the past 2 years and honestly apple has nothing compared to Android. My galaxy note is like a handheld computer... like holy s**t I'm so overwhelmed right now. But as a noobie I do have a couple questions...
Is it worth rooting and flashing a custom ics ROM (what's the best ics ROM to date) when my service provider Telus is releasing ics by early July?
Also, is it possible for me to download the official ics via ota with a rooted phone? If so how do I do that. I've read threads that sometimes rooting disables ota download.
Thanks for looking and I apologize for being a dumba**.

Are you new to android? Then experience your android phone as it is without rooting just yet. As you experience your phone and read some threads you will get to know if rooting is for you or not. This also will allow you to see if your phone may have issues.
If you want the OTA Telus ICS then I suggest you don't root. I don't believe you would receive the OTA unless you were stock unrooted. So my suggestion would be to hang in there for a little time.
Welcome, and congratulations on seeing the light!
The ICS roms we have are awesome so far, with only a couple random bugs that don't keep them from being daily drivers. I definitely recommend rooting and romming if you take the time to read up on everything you can about it. It's a very simple process if you take your time, and definitely worth learning.
Also, if you feel like doing the official update get familiar with how to go back to stock. When you go back to stock, it renews your warranty and also your ability to receive official firmware updates.
Personally, I think that custom roms are better than official, and once your official is released, you will be able to get a rooted version on here within a day out two at most usually. The only time my Samsung phones have ever had stock software is the first and only the first day I have them, and also if I need to do a warranty exchange
Edit: not seeing a stock package for Telus, stop I would hold on for a bit or try to work with a developer to get them what they need to set up a stock Odin package for Telus users.
Second edit: actually it looks like there is a stock package for you. I can help more with some links later, but can't right now

Welcome to the best phone world you can imagine and you made a wise choice to pick up the big boss aka the G note...youll love it stock or rooted and with customs roms on it....this community is the best and has some great devs also any rom you choose your gonna love their rom believe me....Ive been to here and went to the htc one x and to the international note and now im back to stay....those other phones couldnt compare to this one...the international note is brick heaven and the htc one x is just too damn small when your coming from a note lol....but if you love having your phone tweaked out like me then yes root and rom it out lol...but if all that doesnt matter than you can stay stock and still love the phone just as much....but once again wise choice on the phone and glad to have you here....
Please make yourself familiar with the phone first like everybody else suggested. I have gone through few android phones and I still have so much to learn especially when it comes to rooting and loading roms. With samsung, there's a flash counter if you care about warranty and what not even though there are ways to go around it. I have rooted mine but staying on the stock rom and waiting for the official ICS rom. GB rom is perfectly working fine for my needs.
Please read and read over and over everything before you go ahead and mess around with the rom.

There is a flash counter reset, so that's basically a null point. Plus, many people have had no problem returning or exchanging with it tripped.

Yes. I know there is. That's why I said there are ways to go around. I have rooted mine with the one roloracer posted and can use CWM to flash all different roms without even tripping the flash counter to begin with. One less step of needing to reset the counter.
I just want OP to be aware of it.

Ah, I forgot flashing from cwm doesn't up the counter. Good point.

Welcome Android! The Note is my first Android phone. I also came from iPhone and don't regret the move at all. Note is the best overall phone experience I've had.
This is sort of on topic, is there a comparison thread of the different roms and what they have to offer vs. others? That kind of thread might be really helpful for new and seasoned pros.

pretty much the only diff in roms are
CM9 & AOKP have all the bell & whistles ...such as tweaks and etc...
the others are stock based with addition add ons...either way you gonna love it...we have awesome devs in this community...as youll soon see....and glad to have you in the note community...
CM9 is Android at it's best.

just know that you will lose a lot of the S-pen and all Touchwiz capabilities if/when you go with any version of cm9, aokp, or aosp.
I'd stock with GB for a few weeks so you can get used to the menu interfaces and lingo surrounding Android. After that, game on!
Welcome to Android, friend.
Normally, when I first buy a phone, I like to play around with it stock for a few months before flashing the radio or switching roms etc. Just to get familiar with the phone. Since you're new to the whole Android platform, you should definitely get used to it first since there are endless possibilities you can play around with even with a stock rom.
An official ICS 4.0.3 has already been confirmed for release, why not wait for it? An official update will always be 100% safer and run a lot smoother.
This is what I recommend and I am going to be patiently waiting for the ICS 4.0 to officially be released. It's just a matter of time.
How many times have we seen a user new to android/note that root, flash, and ATTEMPT to reset the flash counter only to come to this board crying that their phone is bricked? (one or two a month?)
As others said, if you root/flash, when Ice Cream Sandwich becomes available from your carrier, you will not get it.
If you do root/flash, DON'T worry about the flash counter because if something goes wrong with reseting the flash counter, you might have a brick but most likely several hours of panic/frustration trying to get your phone working.

Its more so a new user to xda thing as I see it. Yes, its partially a new to android thing, but if they learned how to search and read and learn everything they can, all of the info is out there to safely do anything. I had one brick way back when with my captivate, and from that point on I made sure to read as much as possible before doing anything. New users think they will just have everything handed to them and it will work perfectly, which is where they run into problems because they don't know of all the common problems and mistakes due to taking the fast track instead of actually learning about the processes.
Bottom line is they need to not only search and read, but also absorb and understand the material that is available on this site.

The more a user reads and researches the less cluttering threads we have and the more they learn
Which the MAJORITY of people here don't do..
Sad.. truly sad but let them brick their devices as a consequence lol

My advise would be to wait at least a month, do your research, stay on top of the forums, read all the important threads, etc. When I moved over from iPhone I waited about a month and even though it is soooo much easier to root an Android then jailbreaking an iPhone, its just means its that much more easier to make mistakes. Take your time, don't rush it Welcome to the dark side.

Switched to the EVO, need a point in the right direction

So, ive made a big switch. I went from a Captivate with 2.3, to my EVO 3D. Im currently running on 2.3.4 and Hboot 1.49.
Im looking to root the dev so i can remove some of the onboard rogers crap. Stuff in the background is running when i don't want it to. And some of the games and junk on here, i just want to get rid of.
Im reading several threads, but none of them are specific enough. Can someone point me to the proper rooting thread for this build? I dont plan on using a ROM, this OS is stable as it is.
As well, can someone recommend me an Antivirus? Ive heard of people starting to use these, maybe someone can suggest me one.
Thanks in advance,
-Dan

Apparently you haven't read the important threads, otherwise you would have posted this in the right forum :')
Antivirus is overrated AFAIK, it's pretty much only an issue if you plan on installing unknown APKs or using third party app stores. I've been hacked once when I installed an unknown APK on my tablet, which resulted in a password reset of my Google account because my credentials were compromised and some prick attempted to log in to my account from Argentinia
I've looked at the other forum regulations and this was the one that came the closest to the subject. Then again, i also haven't been on the forum for about 6-9 months.
If someone can direct this thread to the proper section that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

this forum is for ROM development. Your thread is about a question you have. That means this thread should go into Q&A (I honestly feel sorry for doing this, the Q&A forum is a very dark place where you can easily lose your mind among the imbeciles)
Definitively off dev thread ;-)
Depending on your hboot version many subprocesses are related.
My advise is to precisely indentify tour default settings then you will easily find out your happiness to clean what you dont want.
Btw, in dev section there are severals cleaned stock roms.
Depending on what you are looking for and consequences (root needed, s off, ...), make tour choice and enjoy.
Personnaly my favorite for daily usage is the Mwakious 3d one, but official ics update is coming since this morning all around the world (do not know for Roget)
Jump and enjoy this really Nice and Effective toy.

Well, ill take a closer look around and see what may benefit me. As stated before, im on Hboot 1.49. Im used to rooting and customizing my Captivate, not exactly the same as the HTC, thats for sure.
moved to q&a as this is not development. if you did not develop anything then do not post in the development section

I like the anti-theft features of Lookout, but I prefer the other features (especially with regard to root features) of Avast. Right now though, I'm not running any.

Just got back to the forums and need some help with the new ics.

I've been real busy with my EMT training for the past couple of months and just got back on the other day and found out about the new ics update. I did the 1.4 downgrade to get s-off. Is there anything I need to do before flashing one of the new roms floating around. I never did the vm update. and i was running infected eternity with anthrax. Thanx in advance.
Unless the ROM includes the 2.89 kernel, then no. If so, then you have to flash one of the fw/hboot upgrades first.

Yeah times have changed a bit....
BTW the a*****x kernel is no longer supposed to be mentioned on xda. fyi
To answer your question though you can flash any of those roms without upgrading anything.....but if you choose to you can update to the new firmware (minus HBoot) (there's a thread with the modded firmware DON"T EVER FLASH THE VM FIRMWARE though.
But the new sprint firmware is supposed to enhance performance...but I don't see the difference...so try without and if you choose to later, upgrade firmware.

Thanx for the help you guys. Also, I had read the zero tolerance posts all over the place. It would appear that simply stating the facts about what's on your phone won't get you in trouble. Its mainly the BS fanboy crap that will get you in trouble. No flaming, no trolling, and if you are a fan of someone's work no bashing someone else because their not your hero. But on the flipside I can see how keeping it to yourself is a good idea. Anyway what roms are you guys running?

So, you guys what ics rom do ya'll like most. Are they all pretty much stock at this point? Also I went ahead and did the firmware update but it didn't take my s-off. Just letting you guys know.
Homebrew right now is mainly stock, but the next version promises great things. Coolexe v9 is great as well. I also life Negamann's ROM. Development has really taken off recently.
