[Q] Flashing stock JB over rooted stock ICS - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
I'm running a rooted stock ICS on my SGS3 right now.
It's I9300XXBLG8.
I wanted to know few things before I flash the new JB for international version: I9300XXDLJ4
1. Does it safe to flash the new JB with odin over my rooted ICS? Will it make some conflicts or problems?
2. Do you recommend flashing?
Right now I have a really good battery life - when I go to sleep with 100% I leave 3g on and after around 7 hours I also have 100%, and the battery is really good. I'm afraid that JB will have bad battery life because it's important to me. What can you say from your experience with JB?
Thanks in advance,
Elad

1. just flash using odin (pc or mobile)
2. don't really get your meaning, just flash only

1. It is fairly safe yes but if you flash a stock rom with odin i'm pretty sure you'll lose root. If you have CWM you should download a stock rooted rom and flash it through through CWM.
2. I dont really understand what you mean. But i do recommend jelly bean. I do think it is an improvement over ICS
Battery life is pretty much the same for me but I never really got as good battery life as you suggest there anyway with ICS. If it is 100% before i go to bed, when i wake up its around 97%-98%. What you can do is turn on airplane mode before you go to bed to save some battery.

So if it's not safe to flash over rooted ICS, what should I do?
When I said "recommend flashing" I meant 'do you recommend upgrading to JB' - not about the process of flashing or something like this..
Thanks for the answers

Need some help please regarding flashing roms

sorry about this thread but i am getting a bit confused with flashing roms on my s2. my handset is not even 3 weeks old and i am already sending it back due to the drainage of the battery. what i mean by that is that i must of flashed the handset like over 40 times till i found the rom that would not drain my battery so fast. i tried cognition, villainrom, batista and everything and my battery was going like hell. within like ten minutes of just having wifi on and just doing my normal browsing my battery from fully charged went down to 85% and that is with data package off and hardly any widgets on. and all the time my display was the highest thing in my battery stats taking the most usage of my battery.
anyway i am sending the handset back and hopefully they will send me a new one. what i need to know is that can install any rom on my new handset once i receive it or do i need to find one which matches my firmware. ie say im ke7 do i need to find a rom with baseband ke7 or can i just flash it anyway say with kg6 baseband?]
sorry if my questions sound stupid i just do not want to flash for the sake of it if its going to harm my handset again.
cheers
Multiple flashing is a bad move to solve battery drain .
You can flash any rom .
Baseband is the modem not the firmware .
Why mess up the phone the minuet you get it in your hands again .Far better to read and learn how and what.
better battery stats .

thanks for replying back JJ and yeah i kinda realized now that it was a bad move flashing alot but can you help me with this then. why is it when i flashed a custom rom my display was sky high in battery usage display and now that im back on stock its normal and i mean 30% and lower?
i had an iphone 4 and was into my jailbreaking and etc but i feel like rooting and flashing is a whole lot more confusing or shall i say pro wise.
[QUOTE=JJEgan
Baseband is the modem not the firmware .
but does the baseband matter in what rom to flash though? say i have ke7 baseband do i need to find a custom rom with ke7 or can i upgrade it to the baseband the rom comes with?

No you can use any modem and even flash it on its own .
KG3 7 KG6 probably the best current modems .
A flash requires two further processes . One charge battery fully . Two zero battery stats then the phone must be used for a week or so to get an accurate indication of battery life .
I believe the key to good battery life starts with a good overnight battery drain when the phones is sleeping . If the drain is high here its going to be even higher in use . Aim for 2% drain over twelve hours sleep if its about 20% then stuff is connecting or waking the phone up .

i have already sent the handset bk today so hopefully they will send me the new one by the end of the week. problem is when i put the stock rom back in and upgraded the firmware through kies officially everything on my battery stats looked normal. so i really do not what the problem was with the handset when i flashed a custom rom and made the battery drain quickly? and also worried that seeing that they might send me the handset back and then i would not be able to flash a custom rom? whats your advice please JJ
Wait and see is all i can say .

which stock rom is best?

i am fed up from custom roms so i need some good official rom from samsung for my sgs2
any one tell me which rom is best from samfirmware?
region is not a problem in my country so which rom is best and have less bugs then others?
Haven't encountered a buggy stock ROM, they're nearly always stable.
KL1 i my stock backup and is bugfree and quick.
i was having problem of battery from stock i installed hyperdroid now i want original stock
and one more thing is custom roms consume more battery then stock?

Too subjective to say - depends on your usage and the kernel.
Custom kernels can be tweaked more than stock kernels - some tweak for performance, some for battery.
Never used hyperdroid, so I can't compare. On my ROM (see sig) I have Redpill kernel. I compared it once against my stock backup, and got about 75 minutes more battery. But it was hardly a scientific test.
Just flash a couple of stock ROMs and find out how battery life is for your setup/usage.
Generally speaking the latest stock is best .
Generally speaking custom roms are better battery life
Generally speaking battery life is a factor of user and the apps and settings on the phone coupled with usage .
Better battery stats and wakelocks are the starting point .

The best stock ROM, is the ROM that designed for your region.

Not region specific firmware .
jje
i dont have any problem with region because that thing doesnt matters in my country i just want a good simple and less buggy firmware just tell me name of it and also give me reference from samfirmware site
Then go to Samfirmware & choose whatever firmware for whatever region/carrier you want. You can't search yourself why exactly ? (I suspect laziness has a bit to do with it).
ICS Rom
My current ROM is from westcrip :

Resurrection Remix ics v9.6 exclusive XXLPH 4.0.3 Full-Wipe
If you're looking for something stable, fast, no FCs(if you install it correctly ), no orange triangle when you boot your phone(this is not the most relevant because there is an app to remove it, but it was a nice surprise the first time I booted the phone), I would recommend this one.
Hope this helps.

- Do a factory reset, it is recommended after software upgrade or downgrade
- switch to custom kernel if the problem persists
Good luck

yes
Yes, on ICS the battery drain was very fast while using wifi or screen on sometimes it drained 1% in 1 sec so in 10 mins 10%.
I am currently on stock gingerbread rom (rooted)
I few minutes back installed one live wall paper and noticed that screen use to come up after few seconds. After uninstall the same screen has not come up.
But still i can see awake 3m (188 secs) 16.1%.
thanks

Speedmod kernel, make sure you are flashing the gingerbread version.
Flashing an ICS kernel will result into bootloops

i would like to recommend u to use stock kernel
and make sure to do a full wipe also format / system before flashing
a stock rom (untouched) and check ur battery if drain fast... then u should replace it ...

this is due to the fact that your battery reading is still inaccurate, the fuel gauge is trying to settle down/calibrate your battery.
Ps: if you can reupgrade back to ICS, I'm sure I'll be able to narrow down and fix your battery drain issue

since you presently have root access, you can just flash a custom stock based Rom, with less bugs all the way.
It's faster and safer than using kies or whatever they call it

[Q] Bootloop on pure Stock

Hey guys,
I know you guys probably think oh god not another boot loop thread, but i couldn't find someone with the same problem as this one. I don't own a s2 myself but my friend does and he doesnt understand a thing about android. He has never updated his phone, it's not rooted or unlocked or anything. But a few days ago the phone randomly shut down and went into a bootloop. I tried to wipe his cache via the recovery menu but that didn't work. Then i did a factory reset and that sort of worked, the phone worked again but yesterday it did the same thing. he likes the phone the way it is so he'd rather not update it.
Does anybody know what could cause this bootloop and what he can do to fix it? If he has to update is there a safe way to update but stay on gingerbread? I myself own a Xperia Arc, i know that flashing roms through flashtool is pretty safe, is there anything like that for the S2?
thx in advance
(system information)
You would use Odin instead of flashtool. You can get the rom from sammobile.
First check he can get into download mode.....

[Q] SGSII heating a lot while doing regular tasks

Hallo everyone!
So since a week ago i'm a proud owner of Samsung Galaxy S2 (yay!).
It had Android 2.3.5 at the beginning so 2 days ago i've updated it to ICS (4.0.3). I've updated it via ODIN (since it couldn't find updates via KIES or by air) with a official ROM (if that's what it's called) from samfirmware.
Since then my phone heats up a lot more compared to 2.3.5 , i don't know how's that possible but i haven't installed any new apps or used the phone differently since the update. I know it's normal to heat up when playing games but even if i'm browsing the web it heats up a lot. I haven't this problem with 2.3.5
Any suggestions?
Go back to 2.3.5 and wait for JB.Or try custom rom.

So it's a common issue?
Hmm.. This is weird.. I'm having the same issue, but I'm having it with JellyBean ROMs.
For ICS the combination that works for me best is Cyanogenmod 9.1 and Siyah Kernel. If that still heats up, you might want to try some different modem and check out if any of them works for you. I think the stock XXKH3 modem helps.

As you might red above i'm a total newb to Android world atm , i just learned how to flash few days ago, i'm not going to mess with new modems etc. (for now). Do you guys think that if i upgrade to that leaked 4.1.2 , that might fix the problem? Also i didn't do factory reset after the upgrade to 4.0.3 because some other user from other forum told me that if i install the official 4.0.3 rom from Samsung - there's no need to do factory reset.
I would have done a factory reset, but thats just me.ICS was overheating my wifes phone, but it was the 4.0.4 thats worst.
If you are flashing modems, you should root first and backup your efs folder......and make a nand backup.

As i mentioned i won't be flashing modems and such. What would you suggest me to do from that point (aside from downgrading)?
You can only downgrade to GB.I detest ICS(rootbox was ok),so I went back to GB.
But now I use vanilla rootbox(JB) with dorimanx kernel.
Only problem Ive seen with this so far is the bloody volumes far too loud when I press keys(had to switch it off).
Anyway, whatever you do make sure you get rooted and backup your efs folder.
So i just upgraded to JB and we'll see how's it going.
