The modem is restricted so you can't change the bands. It's set to switch to the best signal.
The idea of using 2G to save battery consumption is a wives tale. There isn't any difference anymore.

I would hope that's the only reason to want to switch to 2G!
But yeah, with current technology 3G/4G is no longer a battery killer like it once was. Especially on our state of the art awesome Galaxy Notes!

I do not agree with this entirely, because at college I only get 2g all the time! ANd my battery never gets below 75% when I am home it bounces from 3g/4g and even sometimes to 2g I live in a weird area lol...And my battery gets down to 30-35% when I am home doing the same things.....

The modem in the phone is on or off, and it doesn't downshift if it has to run on a lower band. It's like a light bulb -- on or off.
Don't take my word for it, google the topic and you can read what the engineers say.
You can't do the same things with 2G and 4G networks (at least not without pulling your hair out).

I must disagree with you, 2G and 4G switch is available in international GNote. So there is a way to swtch it. And if i am in zone of low 3/4G signal zone, it always switch to 2-3-4 G, so it also make the battery drain faster. In HOX AT&T there is a command you can dial some code and get into menu for switching Bands. There should be somthing like this in Note also.

There is a dial code for this modem but it is a restricted menu. You can't make a selection on it.

To get the option, you would need Samsung modem software and be able to edit the file and unrestrict the band selector. That is something that has never been leaked, unfortunately.

this is what I did:

That's actually a solution for this OP who wants 2G on Straight Talk network. If he follows your instructions, because of the hardware, all he will be able to get is EDGE connection for data.

Note on T-Mobile after flashing T-Mobile radio still not 4G speeds

I have an unlocked Note that has Android 2.3.6 on it. I installed the Clockwork mod on it, and I flashed Tmo_SGH-T989_KID_radio_ATTNOTE (I have also tried 3 other modem files) to my Note. After the reboot, I see the 4G icon, but even though I am in a 4G area (San Francisco area of California), Speedtest only calculates that I get around 700kbps.
I know you can “force” your phone to use T-Mobile’s 4G network (if you get bad T-Mobile signals like me) by switching to HSPA Only mode in Settings->Wireless and network->Mobile networks->Network mode, but even after doing that, I still do not get 4G speeds.
Any ideas?
P.S. - I have already tried the method here (but no luck):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-1547114.html
P.S.S - I have also tried the Saurom (SAUROM_XLA2_RCVII) with T-Mobile Blaze modem (Tmo_BlazeModem_0331122), and no luck either.
My guess is that's what you can expect. Most people's speed is much less than what they had on TMobile phones. Luckily for me, I still get between 1 and 5 mbps on my note. Even though my galaxy s 2 got 10-20mbps, 1-5 is still fully usable. Your best bet is to hope that when the Note drops for tmo next month we get some software from it that makes our att notes a lot faster on tmo's network.
Sorry to bear bad news, but everything I would have recommended to you you have already done.

The issue is thats the antenna is not designed for T-Mobile bands. There is no software fix.
There have been people who have this same phone say they get T-mo 4g speeds. My LG Thrill (an ATT phone that was never released for Tmo) I personally hacked for Tmo and I get 4g speeds...why would Tmo modem hacks be released for the Note if you cant get 4g speeds?

I have a T989 and swapped the main antenna lead to use the T989 antenna on the Note, it was hard to test but I didnt see much improvement. The antennas are physically different between the two units.
If I am correct, the real fix is to purchase the correct antenna. Since detuning the stock antenna with foil improves data throughput, I feel that this is the best solution.
I just switched to At&t last week as I needed international data for this month while I'm in Europe and so far my At&t speeds are half that of T-Mobile with the foil. I'll tweak when I get home, as I just flashed the CM9 rom so I have something to play with while I'm away.

Any way to disable LTE 4G and 3G data?

I am always on wifi so I don't need LTE, 4G, HSPA or 3G.... is there any way I can force 2G or edge only on an AT&T locked Galaxy Note i717? I've looked all over the forums and people say go into the menu and select that option, but it doesn't work. Same with apps, don't work. I've read flashing a different modem will enable that option to work, but won't I need an unlocked phone to do so?

Well like I said I'm on wifi all day and don't need LTE killing my battery for no reason. And, so I can still send or receive pictures.
LTE/Data is automatically disabled when you connect to wifi. No need to do anything. It will turn itself on automatically to receive/send mms.

That is Apple's "innovation" for you right there. This is Android. Android turns off cellular data when on wifi and only turns it on when needed for MMS.
You notice how when on wifi you don't see a 4g icon? Send an mms and you will see it pop up long enough for the message to be sent and then disappear.
That is your phone automatically enabling/disabling cellular data when needed/not needed.
Ok, well to get this back on track I'd like to force 2G or even 3G no matter what. Any solution for me?

Nope. Even on wifi, say If you're sending or receiving MMS it will use your data (4G or LTE). Also, unless you have it turned on while the phone is asleep, your phone will switch back to 4G for downloading or synchronize data. 2G takes longer to download information because of he slower speed which causes the phone to drain battery because the phone would still be downloading the data.

Question for AT&T users.

I had a question for you guys using the international on AT&T.
On my GS2 I remember when data was not being used and was idle the signal meter would show 3G and switch to UMTS and when I used the connection it would switch to H/H+ HSPA.
With my GS3 however, it's constantly showing H even when it's idle. It's NEVER really goes into UMTS mode even when it's idle. I've seen it switch to 3G for a split second every now and then, but then switches right back to H in a split second. In my status I see it's using the HSPA network, not UMTS. The times that I saw it switch to 3g for a split second (I happened to have the status open) I saw it switch to UMTS then switch right back to HSPA.
I know switching to UMTS when the connection is idle saves battery life So I'm wondering since mine doesnt switch to UMTS if it's affecting the battery life
I've tried different modems, in network settings it's set to Auto.
So my question (after that wall of text) is does your phone switch the UMTS when it's idle and show 3G? Or is it constantly showing H like mine?
I'm trying to figure out why the hell it wont stay in UMTS when there is no data activity. If it does switch to 3G/UMTS when it's idle anyone have any ideas what could be going on with mine?
anyone? lol

Unfortunately no...
The "ATT" note is carrier locked, and network locked as well.....not allowing the user to choose individual bands or frequencies.
To date, no rom or hack exists to truly unlock the ATT version for GSM only function....that I've ever found, and none of the play store apps will unlock the network either..
My last phone (HTC) would allow this switch on the network, but the samsung note will not..
But the International version of the note is unlocked for network switching between bands. ( I guess I should have got that one..LOL )
I too would love this feature, but it appears we are not going to get it.....g

thanks for the 411...I'm in northwest Jersey... Sussex county so I bet they're having issues up in that neck of the woods..
out running errands and in Wayne now...4g back and running.. but I had nothing in northern Bergen county either until my phone finally found the evdo rev A there... tough when relying on it as your GPS!

cool... do you happen to know whether the DNA has a similar way to get to the modem settings that the##778# used to initialize on the thunderbolt?

nope.. on the HTC thunderbolt.. dialing ##778# would initialize an EPST menu where you would select edit mode...
from there at the password prompt you would put in 000000
at the full EPST menu you would select modem settings
in that sub menu.. select Rev A
by default it was set to eHRPD.. but if you changed it to enable, commit the modification and reboot,it would force rev a 3g data which was a godsend when Verizon was having LTE/ eHRPD outages... as they always seem to go hand in hand
I'm down in Wilmington, DE and was having issues up until about 2 hours ago. No data at all...
same man. live in north nj. got a razr m and i was getting no data this morning. strange....
Here in MD I was having issues. Seems to be good now.

Yeah i had no data at all in central Virginia for a couple of hours around noon time. Back to normal now. Maybe it was an east coast issue.

You could only do that because the thunderbolt had the weirdest radio set up known to man. It had 2 seperate radios in it.
But you can get into EPST with ##778

If I do either of those then wait a while, like 30 seconds to a minute, a menu pops up saying edit mode or view mode. Edit mode requires a password which I don't know, but view mode does not.

I have had lousy service in the Newark <-> Jersey City areas, on and off, for the last two weeks. It's seriously frustrating. Today I had an outage as well. When I do have service, my download speeds are 100kb/s. Why?? Where's my "like Wi-Fi speeds" Verizon keeps saying in their commercial. Ugh.

I'll be damned! on the thunderbolt it appeared quickly...I never waited long enough.
it doesn't appear every time, actually mostly not, but it did finally appear.
