YouTube video quality on RAZR MAXX - Motorola Droid RAZR

I know this topic has been discussed many, many times here, but my question is a little different (or more specific).
I can get the YouTube app to display HQ videos, and yes I have 'High Quality on mobile' checked in the app's settings, but it seems like the "HQ" videos play in 480p at best. I know this phone's screen res is 960x540, so it won't play 720p video natively, but is there any way to force the app to play the 720p video and shrink or scale it down?
It seems like normal videos are 360p or lower, and HQ is MAYBE 480p, and everything kind of looks like ****.

720p videos look great, same as they did on my Rezound, but 1080p looks better... does that help?
720p videos don't look BAD on a 1080p screen, just not as good as 1080
You won't be able to tell that much on a small 5" screen
I have a 60" tv and I can tell the difference between 720 and 1080

Videos cut out

When watching videos in any browser, they will go black unless I either keep tapping the screen or keep changing volume. Example: watching Youtube in Chrome instead of the app, the video plays, but the visual disappears, not the audio. Youtube is just an example, it does this with any video online. Anyone else have this?

I've tried several 4k videos and there was no lag/stutter or issues with regards to overheating.
Try an alternative video player? I recommend BS Player, excellent player. Plays every format and even supports subtitles.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bsplayer.bspandroid.free
MX Player is also awesome. I bet it also boils down to codec, bitrate, size etc. so keep that in mind.

1. YouTube compresses all videos, so you're not getting full quality
2. The Android YouTube-app only supports 720p.
3. Download a genuine 4K video and transfer it to your Ultra. YouTube is ****ty for this purpose.

I tested a little but really don't know much about video. Did notice tubemate will let you choose 4k to download but uses another app to prices it for storage , then MX will only use s/w decoding to play it. Dolphin browser with hacked flash player will play 4k from YouTube but then I have poor network for tested.

Doesn't help. The resolution will be "4K", but it won't be near full quality. You won't get true untouched 4K from YouTube. Google " 4K test file" or something instead, and do not use streaming services to test video quality.

Yeah never overheated or lagged when playing 4k content my Z ultra. Only thing i noticed was that sometimes it caused the homescreen to redraw when i pressed home. Sometimes.

You may be playing true 4k or above. Some devices won't even play videos that have resolutions higher than 4k. Try 3840 x 2160 for example.

YouTube uploads look horrible

I uploaded directly to YouTube from my S5, and it looks awful. In gallery, it looks great. I recorded it in 1080P. I made sure HD was on in YouTube, and I searched the settings high and low for a quality setting, but nothing. What gives??

How horrible? It won't look as good as on your phone because YouTube compresses everything and is limited to 30 fps

There's definitely a big difference. I played it back on my phone and TV and it's not nearly as good as the original quality

Idk about other places but I do believe you have to wait for HD when uploading to youtube. Since they process every video so it can play in 240p all the way up to whatever resolution you upload at.
