Laggy S III - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
I recently bought my Galaxy S III and it also happens to be my first android phone. Previously I was using iPhone 4S. Anyway the thing I wanted to talk about is it being a little laggy? Is anyone else facing this problem? I have the international version of the phone with exynos quad and 1gig of ram and yet it tends to lag up often. Like for example after using chrome when i press home button it takes a while before the icons show up. Just wondering if anyone else facing similar issues or probably its just ics? Should be smoother in Jelly bean.
PS: I've rooted my phone. I doubt that affects the performance of the phone, but I'm not sure.

Why don't you use the search option and read before you post?

1. root your phone
2. read a lot of topics in xda
3. apply
4. enjoy

Razr very choppy and lagy with original rom 2.3.6 ?!?!?!?!

why, I bought a new motorola razr, the first thing I see its this phone is really choppy and have too much lag comparing with samsung or htc devices I have =/
I just don't understand why, my droid 3 is more faster than razr and only have 512mb
soo, what I think, its related with motorola ui and version off android?! Can we have a clean cm7 with everthing working, including the webtop and tv mirror?
please tell me, because I'm start to be desapointed with my razr. I have a rezound with stock rom and 2.3.4 version, and runs pretty well.....more, the evo 3d and droid 3 are fast too....
this razr is like galaxy ace with performance and opening applications
into the phone option when I press one character it will take like 3 seconds to apear one name with the character I press....the others phones only take 0.10ms
another thing...the WIFI connection....why its soo week

I'd experienced the same laggy with stock system I got with my first Raz. Got a replacement, a new system but same sdcard wich I though was bad. It's running flawless now.
I think it's related to system version (or a bad intallation). Try a new rom. Do wipe data and cache. If the issue persist you may have got a defective device. Mine is running smoothly now.
Also I tried the Chinese ICS leak and the system get even better.

I'm still asking myself why I still have this phone. It is laggy and choppy and I hate it. I bought a $300 phone and its **** honestly. The only thing that is keeping me from selling this phone is that I flashed the first leak of ICS and boy it our phone smooth. The first leak was fast, smooth, and just amazing. If official ICS isn't here by the end of may im getting a better phone.
really...its soo smoth? whats don't work? I almost want to install the leak one

I am using the ICS leak 6.14.75 with Apex launcher and for me it's smooth. Quadrant score is around 3000 plus or minus. What's not working varies case by case from what I read in the forum but for me, only three issues so far.
1. Battery level is way off when I first flashed it but now seems fine after I wiped cache and reset. I also used a free battery calibrate app from the market.
2. Sometimes I need to press power button twice to wake up the phone. Maybe it's because I don't have screen lock on but I don't care much. I am pretty sure it's a bug in this version.
3. 3g/4g icon sometimes shows in notification bar even when data is off. But again I don't care because I mainly use widgets to show my data ON/OFF anyway.
I am actually debating if I want to move on to official ICS when it's available. There are a lot more bloats to be add on the official release. With the leaked version I can uninstall any bloat in the system app without worrying about future OTA since leaked ICS won't get OTA anyway LOL. This is just a personal preference. I don't like anything that I don't use in my device.
Are you using Rom Toolbox (or some other tool), and changed the governor?
You want mot_hotplug unless you have a specific reason NOT to use it.
You'll get very choppy response with the ondemand governor.
/2 cents
I don't find any lag on mine..its rooted and on stock ROM 2.3.6, Asia version. And I am using Go Launcher EX at the moment.. Its smooth as butter..

SGS3 vs. SGS2

Hi, at this moment I have the SGS2 but want to buy the SGS3.
On my SGS2 I can open about 10 apps. and 2 Gameloft games like Shadowgun and NOVA3 at the same time. The phone is still smooth and no apps are closed. Now I tried the same on 3 different SGS3 and it is not possible to do the same as I did on my SGS2. When I open NOVA3 and an internetpage NOVA3 will be closed and visa versa!!!.
Is this normal? Anything to do with RAM or is there a problem with the SGS3?
Important is that I want to keep the SGS3 original, stock.
Thanks for any reply.
This is normal on stock.
Blame touchwiz. It can be fixed with root/custom rom.

How can this be normal? What is the reason for that? You cannot call this multitasking can you?
The s3 smokes pretty much all phones out there. The s2 is no comparison at all. Just for arguments sake. Why would you have 2 high end games open at the same time?
Multi tasking on the s3 is superb. Running fox hound the phone is faster than anything I've ever used before.
There's no comparison here
Ps: I have about 14 things open in the task manager right now. That is multi tasking

Multitasking is fine on S3. Don't look at a specific game or app,**** can happen due to that app not being supported so good on the S3.
Hardwarewise the device is more than ready to multitask for you.I do feel the current custom rom i use is better than stock when multitasking, but it was more than ok on stock also.

Should I buy a Galaxy Player?

I am looking for a device mainly as a VOIP device. I can get a Galaxy samsung S for around 70-100 around here average from craigslist but was also considering a player 4.0 or 5.0 - problem is the 4.0s go for a little bit more (right now I have a guy willing sell me his mint one for $85). However, I've seen the 5.0 for around 120-150 refurbished or like new used and really like 5" screen. What would you guys do?

No one?!
Do you also want to use it in long trips or for GPS? If then the extra battery capacity from the galaxy player 5 suits the needs. Because honestly all of the following works perfectly well for a VOIP. Also if you are looking for development support from XDA you might consider the galaxy s. I would personally get the galaxy s because of the better custom roms and the capability of using a backup battery, which a player 5 cannot do

The Galaxy Player 4.0 is based on the Galaxy S1 so I'd go with the S1 because there are way more devs for it. Spec vs Spec the only thing in favor of the GP 4.0 is that it has duel stereo speakers and that's about it lol. The S1 has a much better screen and better camera. Now the 5.0 is a little different. It has of course the Screen Size, LED Flash, and a much bigger battery. Also it has a bit more devs, however it's screen is actually worse than the 4.0's and it uses a Yamaha DAC so it's sound quality isn't as nice as the GP4.0/S1 (whom use the same DAC). So like I said go for the S1 and be careful shopping on craiglist.
5.0 is worth it with reservations - old rom and no updates

hi
I've already bought a 5.0 from new and overall I'm reasonably impressed. It's a good vivid player with all the flexibility of Android to boot and a microSD card slot!.
I decided to purchase a separate music device rather than run my phone that way to avoid running my battery down...
However I would warn you that for the UK version that I bought, it seems to be stuck running Android 2.2.2 with no sign of an update any time this century. It's starting to be restrictive with regards to apps. Furthermore although some will tell you "just root it and update the rom"...I've yet to see a simple (for a noob) rooting process and set of roots that would at least match the stability of the stock version for the 5.0/4.0.
I've searched the fora and there's a lot of info to digest....
Did you try superoneclick?

Just some food for thought. I noticed that the Galaxy Player line is no longer available to buy, brand new, from Amazon (only third party sellers) and that Best Buy shows any of the players as "not available for shipping". I was curious what was going on and begin to find that it is possible the Galaxy Player line is being entirely discontinued. I hated to hear this, but think it is important to keep in mind as Dev support could become continuously smaller - it isn't large by any means at the moment.
If you are okay with the possibility of no support outside of forums, I would say to go for it. They are great devices as media players and even a type of 'wifi only' phone. Good luck with your decision!

Good choice you should be careful buying a used galaxy though. They are notorious for the power button breaking. There's a workaround however by installing an app where you can turn it on with a volume button.

They are still available on Amazon UK:

I looked up kies mini and it seems they are device specific, I've installed kies regular and it says I'm on the latest firmware already.
I know I could try updating to 2.3 with Odin, and from what I understand that would be to the stock 2.3.5 that the US 5.0 Wi-Fi comes with. This is how: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EYjIyVXRGM
I just don't know if it might break something, is there a big improvement to updating to gingerbread? Like how is the performance?

uninstall Kies regular and try Kies mini. mini upgrades basically all the galaxy s products so it's safe to assume that it would work on the gp. plus it was mentioned by Samsung themselves in order to upgrade the galaxy players.
gingerbread is not exactly a huge improvement in terms of performance, but it gets way better app compatibility. for example you don't need to root your gp if you want to use the power button alternative if the button ever breaks. and it's a more appealing to the buyer's eyes.
um... that's all the differences I know of

I've just given it a go and kies mini isn't recognizing the device, if I connect it in mass storage mode it tells me to reconnect in kies mode, when I do that it just sits there completely unaware I have even plugged it in, while the computer makes the 'connect' sound followed shortly afterwards by the 'disconnect' sound.
Thanks for your help anyway

I ended up getting a mint Droid X for $45 after flashing ICS I was really satisfied with it as it seemed just as fast as my old G2x (that I killed trying to fix - so many probs and bad battery life)... however while battery life was decent 6 hours screen time, I decided to try a GB rom and its at 49% after 10 hours of almost continuous usage.... the phone, while not as powerful as the latest dual cores or even the galaxy S is very smooth and fits my needs... highly recommend anyone who is in my shoes to check out used phones to use as a VOIP cuz there's really good devices/deals out there!

In the menu of kies mini was an option to reinstall drivers I tried that but after leaving it for 20min at least it was still at 0% so I canceled it. Are the drivers on the Samsung website different? When I look at the support section for the YP-G70 it doesn't give any drivers.

If you want stable look for custom roms that are based off of stock, like Chip v1.5. These ones provide mostly, if not, all the features that are available for the default rom and provide extra features. Check this out for more details. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1720457

I was saying, if you want samsung apps, there are leaks out there. If you want a samsung rom aka touchwiz, its hard.
Since my dad owns an S3 LTE,
1. I noticed that sleep to wake timing is 3 secs while my phone is about 1 sec.
2. Battery Life is horrible.
3. He uses 800 MB of ram after killing all the process in settings.

[Q] Why is Android still laggy?

Now before anyone attacks me for bad mouthing their favorite mobile OS, let me state that I've been using Android since the G1.
I know I'm not the only one who has this problem or has made this observation. I have only ever purchased flagship devices. Quite a few since 2009. Every single one has been laggy.some more than others but here I am on a brand new Note 4 having the same problem again. It was the same with the Nexus 6 before it and the Nexus 5 before that and so on and so on.
I thought things would get better over time but even with 5.0 the lag was there. It actually made my Nexus 5 worse and my nexus 6 ran like crap... so much so I had to switch to the bloat ware filled Samsung Note 4,which despite having its own lag problems, runs better than the N6 it replaced.
Someone please explain to me why this is still an issue all these years later and is there ever hope for a smooth running android device.
Please don't come in here and say I'm holding/doing it wrong or that your android device isn't laggy. That's BS.
I love the functionality of Android and I don't plan on ever switching.I've even bought an iPhone when the 5S was released and learned it wasn't for me.
Hope this is the right place for this post.
In samsungs phones the causer of lag is touchwiz launcher and samsungs bloatware apps. Sorry for my bad english. Im from finland
There is no bad choises, only bad results.
SGS III Mini
tenshi_xp's PAC Rom RC-3
KitKat 4.4.4.
I agree that touch wiz and the bloat apps don't help but even "pure android" phones have the same problems without the launcher and apps. The problem isn't just on Samsung phones.
