ROM. Need help - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello there,
I have a lot of doubts regarding android and I hope you clear them by answering . Thank you.
ROM. What exactly is it. It means read only memory right? So, its basically Rom as we know it.?
1- why do we change Rom to install New os. Say ICS or something.
2- do we need to root the ph to install new roms?
3- if I want to run ICS on my desire hd, I just need to download the ics setup and install it?
4- I M able to find a lot of roms by different people, what is it?
Please explain and elaborate

Need Htc one v (Indian) stock ROM :(

Hi all,
I bought this htc one v about a month ago and yeah it is my first android phone ever. Annoyed by the self running apps I went ahead and rooted the phone (youtube rocks ). And then I installed /system/appmover from market and being stupid enough I moved some system apps. But unfortunately this app permanently deleted those apps. Now my phone is totally messed up.
I need an Indian htc one v stock ROM.
Would someone be generous enough to help me out? plzzzz.
Any suggestions or directions are most welcome. I am a complete noob in android affairs.
Thanx in advance.
Indian?

What is that with the "India" ROM ?
Just flash any of the stock ROM that is not at least chinese of japanese Either way there will be English in every ROMs. Unless you know exactly what you want from the "Indian" ROM.
BTW post your HTC One V related queries in the respective sections

I assume you have already unlocked the bootloader. So there is no reason why you should go for the stock rom again. Do a research on the available custom roms. They should be better than the stock ones, and doesnt contain the manufacturer bloatware. It should perform better, or at your discretion, give more battery backup. You get to choose.

In fact, I've never used an HTC one v. I answered your thread since it was very generic, and of course, Indian
Search for the your phone's specific thread in xda and post any queries there.

If you are interested in custom roms and kernals you should probably root your DX...
There are threads which will explain you each and every detail about custom roms and kernals..... You can make the phone look the way you want...
If you root your DX i recommend you to use TWRP its stable and easy to use! Thays what i found
And yeah dont forget to hit the thanks button

Just don't start another ROM comparison thread as we already got a few of them here. I recommend you to start reading in Android Development section, it'll be self explanatory. If not and if you have particular question to a specific ROM, you can ask there or here if you are not allowed to ask there yet.

Hi it depends on what are u using ur mobile for if u want.I had the interest to try diferents ROMs that why I've rooted my phone and install many ROMs. many of them half-bricked my phone but allways i found the way to fix that just looking in this forums.I strongly recommend u to root it.Doing so u will have a large amount of new possibilities like removing system apps.
About Recoveries I use TWRP after testin CWM and i prefer TWRP its easyest to use anda it has another option that CWM doesn't have.
I hope I help u good luck with your choice and have fun with ur phone

Well this is not an easy question to answer,Rooting our device is really easy but to unroot im using the Desire x toolkit posted in developers forum it has the option to lock the bootloader to unroot the phone.About the stock ROM i recommend to do a backup of it doing a factory reset.I recommend also to save the backup in an external memory like personal hard disck device or a pendrive.U will have the option to recovery it later if u want,u can also look for STOCK ROMs ruu looking to ur CID that could be taken using the toolkit i mentioned before.
good luck guy!
help with chosing ROM and toolkit
I was going to use the windroid desire X root kit is that a bad idea and iv chosen to use TWRP recovery but is there any stable ROMs you can recomend and again any help would be appreciated.
Even i am new to this rooting stuff...
But i am enjoing a lot! Flashing new kernals roms is fun but at the same time we have the risk of phone brick...
But never mind we have all the answers right here...

HTC Amaze Custom ROM Question

I recently bought the HTC Amaze 4G International/Unbranded version. I'm new to Android ( was an ios user ). Since there is no official update for the unbranded HTC Amaze I read Aj's guide on how to get it on ICS. Well, I messed up during the S OFF and was unable to do it as I have a Windows PC and juopunut bear does not work for Windows.
By this time I had bootloader unlocked and my phone was rooted. I installed the stock GB ROM in Aj's guide ( T Mobile one ). Since S OFF is for getting ROMs by any carrier, how did I get the T-Mobile stock GB ROM ? If I was able to get a T Mobile GB Rom installed shouldn't I be able to get the T Mobile ICS ROM ?
I also have another question regarding CynagenMod. If I'm on a GB ROM which latest Cm ROM will I be able to install ? Will the latest CM ROM be better than the GB ROM?
Sorry for this long post but I just had a lot of questions stuck in my mind and don't want anything to go wrong.
Thanks

S-OFF means security off so when you try to flash a kernel you dont have to do it through adb or use smartflash, and bout can use any carrier thing it belongs to the CID part which you have the asian one HTC_044 or something like that, so you cant flash any ICS RUU's or Firmwares provided by t-mobile and etc...well you can use the tmobile gb rom cuz you have the GB firmware in your phone (came along with your asian GB rom pre flashed) to have a ICS or higher OS version you must upgrade your with ICS firmware and to do that you have to turn off security and change your CID so the bootloader will let the process run without terminating it, and bout the CM versions i think CM7 means GB so yea CM 7 ..if i'm wrong feel free to correct me
Thanks mate! That helped a lot.

Another question. I see that you cannot perform S OFF on a Windows PC because it is not supported :/
Does that mean I can't do S OFF as I have a Windows PC?
2nd question is I want to install apps which are ICS+ like BBM, since I can't S OFF is there anyway to get those apps while still on Gingerbread?

Yo, if you could, try to get some time on a computer that has Ubuntu installed.
If it's not available, just download a free copy from the site, burn it to a dvd and either do a live cd boot or install it side by side with your windows (like I did It isn't hard to uninstall)
Once you do that, you can run the juopunut's controlbear from terminal.
Just follow the instructions from unlimitedio and you should be fine.
Honestly, It's not that hard to do.
Now, there's an official bbm app on google playstore , you can try it..

If you read what he said properly, he asked IF he could get apps like BBM for gingerbread, since they're made for ICS and other newer roms (JB and KK)
But no. you can't get it on GB.
For S-OFF all you really need to do is burn Ubuntu to a DVD and run it, install it (you don't have to make a big partition.)
When you're done, just install the appropriate applications and voila, you're ready to run the controlbear.

A little guidance needed

If you update via OTA after rooting, you WILL lose root. You may however root it again (provided rooting methods are available for the newer software version). You may or may not lose your apps (depending on the type of OTA update) after the update. So make sure to do a good backup first!
Flashing a custom ROM will almost always require you to do a full wipe (or format) of your phone, which will remove all your apps as well as personal data (excluding your files). You DON'T NEED to root custom ROMs, they are already rooted.
And yes, you have asked in the right place.
So thank yoi very much for ykir reply and thank you for ur time
I am happy i ask in right place of the forum
MERRY XMASS TO ALL !
