I have been using the HTC evo on sprint for 2 years. My girlfriend saw the note and fell in love, and I was intrigued by the huge screen, since I use my phone more as a smartphone and less as an actual phone. So we went to ATT and bought a couple and are giving them a try, but haven't cancelled our sprint yet. She seems to like it a lot, haven't heard a complaint yet.
Out of the box, I was impressed with the screen for sure. Didn't liek the way the default browser handled zooming/word wrap on a lot of web pages, but a new browser fixed that. Battery life was good, but not great compared to what I was used to on some roms on my rooted evo. I am trying to learn to use the S-pen more. I haven't been blown away by the Note, but my Evo sure does seem small now.
I have been itching to root this thing and start installing some roms, but obviously wanted to wait until I was sure I was keeping it.
A couple questions, if I stay with ATT, I will be porting my sprint number. Will rooting the phone or installing a rom cause any issues with the porting of my old number? The Evo was super easy to root and flash roms, and also super easy to unroot in case it ever needed service, which it hasn't yet. Is it just as easy to root/unroot the Note? More concerned about the unrootingt, I am sure I can figure out the root process from the stickies, but I didn't see anything for unrooting, maybe I missed it. Just want to make sure I can get the phone serviced if I need to.
Thanks!

Hey so, I recently switched from Verizon to AT&T. I kept my old number and rooted my note within three days of getting it. Haven't experienced any issues whatsoever and I think you will be blown away once you get hip deep into the Roms that are available. The only problem that I have come across is that I can't stop flashing new roms now.
But, it is super easy, really great guides on here and on Youtube if you're the visual type. I don't think you'll regret it. My only advice is just reading through the threads (or at least the last few pages) before flashing just to see the experiences of others and what to expect before you give it the go ahead. The rooting guides have guides toward the bottom on how to unroot and that's on youtube too.
Hope that helped.

I had rooted my evo and flashed so many roms I can't even count. So it's not that rooting/flashing scares me, and I am sure I can figure it out with the guides just fine. I was more worried about voiding my warranty or whatever. More so with this phone then with my evo for some reason.
There is an Odin image somewhere on these forums that will get you back to stock. It's pretty easy to do.
So far, this phone is the best phone I've ever had.

yes you can restore your phone to stock if needed (warranty is only reason I can think of). You can do it w/your PC and the stock ROM file as you can see in one of the forum stickies, I think the development forum.
Just get on one of the latest ICS leaked ROMS...I highly recommend the OnlyOne ROM/MOD since it is the based on the latest leak with a few key mods/etc added. Runs gREAt. And has some Samsung Galaxy III add-ons ported (i.e. new Touchwiz UI, S Note, S Voice, tethering). The OTHER ROMS are also solid and have more theming and custom stuff.
Get a PC then use it to Root, install CWM and then install your ROM of choice.
I like staying on Stock stuff and tried to on my Note for a few weeks but there were too many benefits to rooting, etc.
Have fun. Again...the ICS Leaked ROMS are sweet.
The Note, and most Samsung phones for that matter, are among the hardest to hard brick and some of the easiest to return back to stock as a result. Samsung phones are also very easy to root. The Note is no exception. As others have stated, we have an ODIN package to bring you back from everything but a hard brick. And you're not likely to do that so long as you stay on these forums and not the n7000's. That's pretty much the only way people have bricked their devices beyond saving. And even then you can send a hard brick in to some site and save it with JTAG repairs for $50, which is much cheaper than a replacement phone.
Also, in addition to the stock ODIN package, we have a flash counter reset, do ATT will have no indication you ripped whatsoever. People have returned their Note with the flash counter tripped, and had no issues, but it doesn't hurt to be careful. By using the ODIN package and flash counter reset, your warranty is again valid, so you really have nothing to worry about.

Best thing I've done was root and flash this yesterday. The stock experience was driving me crazy (came from a flashed atrix). I say go for it and don't look back. This phone was pretty easy to root and flash.

Alright you all have convinced me. Off to read the root stickies/guide.
This is the method I want, correct? Looks like the other one isn't meant for custom roms, just to gain root access and leaves the flash counter at 0.

No need to worry about the flash counter. There's an easy method to reset it and go back completely stock.
My suggestion: flash cwm, root, flash one of the awesome ics roms, and worry about going back to stock later. Totally worth it.
Flapjaxx'a ROM is what I'm currently running and it's up there for the smoothest and best Android experience I've seen through 3 Android phones and many other friends' phones. It's seriously like iOS/WP7 smooth for me. And great battery life. Wouldn't trade my Note for a damn thing. =].

Either is fine. I use non touch because it's what I used on my captivate and infuse and I'm used to it, it has never failed me. I've never used touch, but apparently it's just as stable. It's really a matter of preference add far as I'm concerned and whether you like using the volume and power buttons or your screen.

I just got my S3 today. It is bigger then I actually would like. Also, I do not like TouchWiz (and the VZW mods/bloatware) on the phone. Even using Nova Launcher, I still get stuck with some odd interface issues due to TouchWiz.
For hardware, though, it runs very, very well. However, I am stuck -- I would like to but JB on it but with no perm root yet for the phone (just the kexec work around). So I am curious, since the BL is locked (not eta yet of getting it unlocked) should I go towards the Gnex (similar size phone) or the smaller Inc4g (which is unlockable -- worried about support though unlike my OG DINC). I prefer the Inc4g however the build quality is an issue on the phone. In my 20mins of playing with it at VZW (day it came out), seems to run very well with Android 4.0 and Sense 4. I don't mind Sense as much as TouchWiz either.
So I am at an impass: do I wait to see what happens with the S3? Do I jump ship to the GNex or Inc4g?
I do wish VZW would not have been stupid about the S3!

I would honestly wait it out. It's a matter of time before enough people get together and win over a BL unlock update from Sammy. If you want a GN enough I would trade you, but to be fair the s3 is a strong phone and should get the unlock soon.

Have been an Android user since November 2009 when I got my OG Droid, was rooted and ROMed in January after the 2.0.1 update came out and dev's cracked it. I really want a Note 2 but want to be sure we will see ROMs, Kernels and recoveries. From reading the Dev section it seems SBOOT is locked and we can't even get kexec at this point. It sounds like the VZW version may just be locked down too tight to get anything other than just Root. So, given all this, what do you guys think is the liklihood of use seeing custom ROMs, kernels and recoveries on the VZW Note 2?

Custom ROMs is fairly easy. The way the phone was rooted is how one would also do a custom ROM at this point. If we are to get more than that, we're going to need to find a way to unlock the bootloader, which so far, has been futile, but it was also people that have never really done it before trying. Hopefully, an unlock method is found, and we can then go with custom recoveries and kernels, along with easier to flash custom ROMs.

So they would have to be just custom versions of the stock ROM correct, since you would have to continue using the stock kernel. Is AOSP basically impossible without unlocking the boot loader and getting custom kernels? I don't want to have to rely on VZW and Samsung for updates, at their pace 4.3 will be out and this will still be on it's current 4.1.1.
just gotta wait for a leak from someone important....hopefully it doesn't take as long as it did for the s3!

You could do something that looks like AOSP, but no, I don't think you could get true AOSP until we get custom kernels.
I've been in Android for a few years now, and I've always defaulted towards AOSP since I hate the heavy overlays that these OEM's place on our devices, but this is the FIRST time in a long time that I will be saying this: why would you even want custom ROM's for this device?
I mean that, honestly. It's perfect. Sure it's nice to get root and modify certain things, but for the most part I don't see any 3rd party ROM trumping stock for this phone. Just the S Pen alone is reason enough to never want to leave stock.
I wasn't really lurking the Note 1 ROM scenes so I don't know how well developers were able to port S Pen functionality over to ROM's like CM10 etc, but I don't imagine they'd ever be able to fully integrate it to the level it is on stock.
And given the immense battery life, top notch performance on stock, I don't see a need to "trim the proverbial fat" of the actual firmware anyway. It's just, perfect.
You can have custom ROMs without getting rid of spen features. I agree with you that I wouldn't want an AOSP ROM but shaving a little weight off this thing wouldn't hurt
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
Honestly, I'm just waiting for a rom that's debloated, deodexed, has unlimited multiview, wifi toggle, adjustable homescreen, etc. etc. Nothing major, unless some one comes up with some neat ideas on how to integrate the S Pen into the ROM for a better user experience. We've got a good dev community, so I remain optimistic that something cool will come our way.
i agree...i see no need for aosp on this device at this time. just need root and hopefully cwm recovery. samsung has touchwiz dialed in pretty well. however aosp will have its place when this device quits getting updates.
I'd just like it open and custom kernels I don't mind touchwiz on this type of device

Honestly the S Pen is NOT at all what is drawing me to this phone, really couldn't care less about it to be honest. What IS drawing me to this phone is the bigger screen from my G-Nex, the faster processor, the bigger battery and the improved screen. Also the improved radios and data conenction from the notoriously bad G-Nex radios is a huge draw, but none of this is about the S Pen. I know I may be in the minority with my opinion here, but that's at least what I want, and to be honest, when is having more ROMs for a device worse than having less That's why I want AOSP ROMs and custom kernels etc.

Aosp roms are the hardest to get on cdma devices, plus isn't this chip a new one as well? Many hurdles to jump over before that happens.

im with the others...im very impressed at this UI of this phone. i would like a recovery and perhaps and overclock but the overclock isnt even needed IMO. other than that (thought id never say this) the stock rom nailed it. its apparent the people at samsung not only know what they are doing but listen to the consumer. i dont know how many of you are boaters but phones are like boats. you will never find the perfect one. however judging from the reviews so far this is about as close as it comes...from my point of view anyway..
and to think i was hesitant about getting it. i stood in the store for 30 minutes contemplating it. the rep was about to give up when i said "okay im pulling the trigger". first time i have ever bought a phone and not been 100% sure when i walked through the door.
I guess I have also been spoiled by the phones I have had, the OG Droid and the Galaxy Nexus, honestly I don't think any one phone has had a bigger and more vibrant community than the OG Droid, not even the Galaxy Nexus. I would like to be able to stay on the cutting edge of Android though, knowing that if a new version is released I should have it within 24-48 hours if not less. I am using 4.2.1 on my Nexus and quite like it, seems even smoother than 4.1.2 and also like the few new features, mainly the quick settings panel and PhotoSphere. I know the Galaxy series was one of the originators of the quick setting panel but I like Google's implementation quite a bit. Would just be weird to give up using CM after doing so for almost 3 years now. All decisions to consider. May pick up the phone at Best Buy and see if I like it an return it if I still prefer the Nexus.
There is a thread about them trying to get CM10 on the Note 2, but the VZW version might be the hardest.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2019535
Would it be useful to start a bounty for a bootloader unlock and custom recovery or for CM and AOSP on it? If so I would donate, just wondering what you all think.
I have said in a lot of devices forums in the past that the amount people will be able to do is proportional to the amount of effort and the support the communities give. In this case you guys have already bought adamOutler a phone, and he has torn it down, we have started to analyze the bare bones, and I'm sure hes looking for an unbreakable mod. With this being said lets address a couple of the questions at hand:
First off it does not look like their will be an easy fix to the fact that the bootloader is locked. The way that it looks in the white paper are their are efuses that are used as both a hardware key and possibly a configuration bit. Once this is set it cannot be unset. All hope is not lost though. With adam's UART he has found a couple loading points that might be inject a new bootloader and kernels and such there. However this is a shot in the dark, as it utilizes the fact that there is some security code loopholes in the boot chain to allow for injections.
Secondly there is always the possibility of custom roms. Using subsystems such as 2ndboot and such you can always make it so that you load a new system image onto the existing one, though this means longer boot up times. Also there is another cool thing out there called kexec (this may or may not be enabled in the default kernel). If enabled in the kernel, the kernel can shut down proc1 and then re initiate with a new kernel ontop of it. If properly coded all phones with the root ability have the ability to do this if they can issue a kexec. Kexec has been ported over to many phones, and some of which dont have kexec enabled in the existing kernel. This makes it so EVERY DEVICES THAT HAS ROOT HAS THE POSSIBILITY TO HAVE CUSTOM ROMS. However with kexec not being enabled on ever phone, it makes it hard to program ever phone to have the right kernel injection points.
The last thing is that to the best of my knowledge the bootloader code is not public, which makes it very hard to find vulnerabilities, however it does not mean that they never get found. Time. Time is all we ask for, as this is not our only job and it takes alot of hard work from devs free time to work and develop. With all that being said im sure in time someone some where will find a link.
Wondering if there is any way I can help. I am not new to Android, however I have never gone past using already fully known and documented things, standard rooting etc. I am interested in getting to know things better so if I can be of any help let me know.
Man I think this will be the last time I buy a Samsung phone from Verizon. The way they force samsung to lock down the bootloader is crazy.

This! Also, coming from the GNex I wanted the GN2 to look exactly the same and now it does! :good:
I wanted to fix what verizon messed up/left out. I rooted and installed beans and cleanrom the first evening. If it wasnt for the wifi notification, wifi toggle, multiview full control and blocking mode I may have held out for awhile.

I rooted right away and then made it three weeks before returning to stock and unlocking the bootloader. Flashed cleanROM 1.0 for verizon so I could keep the s-pen features. I actually agree that stock is pretty great...my main reason is for when Verizon takes forever to release new updates (maybe key lime pie at some point) and I get antsy.
I unlocked my bootloader and flashed a CleanRom when I got the phone back to my desk after the store. Wanted to get rid of the crap VZW puts on my phone I have no desire to have, put Wallet back on, and use backup software.
I'm rooted and unlocked running CleanROM 4.0.5. I wanted root so I could add apps to multi-window, remove bloat, and take advantage of some advanced controls with Tasker and Secure settings.
I just grabbed this phone from Verizon, since the dev community is small compared to my other 2 options (Razr HD Maxx and Galaxy S3), however, with this new pesky 2.04 OTA that came pre-installed on my DNA, it seems like the community is currently at a halt.
I have approx 10 more days to return my DNA and get a second choice (Razr or Galaxy), but the hardware is really holding me to the DNA. I don't care much for Sense, and I've always been a motorola fan, however I also love to dev and mess with my phones. So, how likely is this 2.04 unlock? Or should I just go ahead and switch phones? Both the S3 and Razr have great dev communities. S3 has 2gb ram while the Razr has 1gb ram BUT has that amazing battery.
What should I do? I'm so indecisive right now and it's killing me!
I wouldn't buy a phone based on what might happen in the future. If nothing else, you could always sell it and buy one unlocked and s off.
The S3 is decent although old and I suspect dev support is on the downhill slope. I'm personally not a fan of the Razr. If it was my choice to make I'd keep the DNA or sell it and get one unlocked, or get a Note 2 to hold me over until Verizon gets the next HTC. The DNA 2 or One Variant.

why not take it back to the store and swap it out instead? Just don't let the store reps update your software. I never let them do anything more then activate my sim card
Guess its a good thing the woman that sold me mine was not familiar with smartphones, I had to show her how to take out the SIM tray. I declined the update so I could familiarize myself to sense coming from the razr maxx

You think the phone was updated and didn't just come already preloaded with the new software? I don't remember having to sit through any update, she simply opened it, popped in the sim card, and had me log into my gmail. If that's the case, then I might try that route.
I came from the Maxx and think the DNA is so much more of a phone that I live we the battery size. I got to say that there is something innate to flashaholics that we must have the latest version and once we have it, we want to newest version. In the end, they all still do the same damn thing. We risk bricking, endless hours of trying to fix something we may have screwed up in flashing variants and trying every rom out there and trying again and again. The DNA is a great phone as is. You will always want the next phone regardless so make a decision based on the phone in your hand not what it may be like once you get rooted and start the insanity again of trying to make it better. You can deactivate bloat, hid things in app drawer, it is still blazing fast, a portable battery hub solves the battery issue better than having to plug in everywhere, the Qi pad is sweet, still fits in jean pockets and it has a beautiful screen.

Why do you have to point out the amazingness of this phone and make my decision even harder!? I do agree with you though. The DNA has amazing more-than-currently-needed hardware, and that's really what's making my decision so hard. I have faith in the unlock, and plenty of patience, but it's hard being a developer and not being able to dev. I hate being restricted. I'm almost to the point of getting the Note II, but the phablet size is keeping me away for now.
Thanks for the input!
I would say the DNA is definitely worth it even without root/unlock.

Before the update came out I didn't root or unlock because I think phone is amazing on a stock rom. HTC really did a nice job. Although once it stops getting otas I will unlock root and put a custom rom and kernel but until then I'm just staying on stock. I don't see anything wrong with it. And if I get the urge to flash something I just flash my n7.

I am rooted and unlocked but the main reason I did it was to remap to recents button to long press menu just go get rid of the black menu bar.
Other than that I was very happy with stock.

My DNA is still locked and unrooted and honestly it doesn't bother me too much. It is pretty awesome as is. Sure it has some annoyances but what phone doesn't?

Absolutely, it's a very smooth phone. And like broons said, there are small things that bug me. I would like to root for tasker, hotspot/tether, custom notifications bar (i really dislike the sense skinned not bar), power on with volume, remve gps icon, and remove the bloat completely. Those are what I would do instantly, with only root. But of course, the main reason would be to flash roms and take a crack at the source myself
Is there currently a team actively working on the 2.04 unlock?

Guys If you want an exploit email and twitter at HTC and HTCDEV to release the 2.04 kernel source which they are LEGALLY required to do and have no done so yet. There is seriously a likely exploit there.
I'd stick with the DNA...cm 10.1 is almost done and if devs can't figure out a root method...which i think they will...you can send it off to get s-off for like $40...its not impossible to get s-off
Current team says it is not likely. Kernel source may help.

The first thing I do is ROOT when I get a phone. However I can't on the DNA b/c I'm also on 2.04. I'm actually with AT&T using the DNA. I don't have LTE, and MMS only works using GoSMS which I don't really care for. Even with the MMS issue, no LTE, and no ROOT, this phone is still worth it. If I was an actual VZW subscriber, this would be the phone to have for sure.
I want ROOT to remove the horrid software install popups when connecting by usb and to wifi tether. Other than that, the stock rom is pretty smooth. The hardware is just too BEAST to pass up. I'm coming from the OneX which was a great phone as well, but the DNA runs circles around the OneX.

I have had numerous Moto phones and the Razr Maxx HD was a big disappointment for me; and I tried hard to love that thing. 32 GB of memory and a battery like no other, but they skimped out by only including 1 GB of RAM which gave me redraw after redraw. It reminded me of my old Charge. The DNA is by far the best stock Android phone I've ever had (15 and counting). If you don't like Sense, then just throw Nova or something similar on top. I would never own a Samsung phone again, but if you're okay with the plastic, crappy feel, the S3 probably has the easiest phone to root and the most custom ROM's.
If you guys want any hope of an exploit, Twitter and email HTC and htcdev to release the kernel source! They are violating the gpl by not doing that.

Had the Razr as well and loved it but the 1gb of RAM was the problem. Had they put 2gb in the HD's, right now, they would be owning market.
The DNA is amazing even unrooted. Power toggles and Nova make this phone completely unique and i haven't even played with ADW and other launchers. Just crazy fast and lightning quick.
