Phone: Galaxy S2

Ok, so I did some stupid things while trying to install cyanogenmod (my Android friends told me I needed to do this). All was going well until I rebooted using rommanager, and had a signature error (i think). I then pressed ALL OF THE WRONG BUTTONS (probably toggle signature verification i think). Now when i boot the phone it goes:
- o2 animation screen
- galaxy s2 logo
- pause
- o2 animation screen (repeat)
SO.. I'm guessing I need to put the firmware back on there, right? I can get into download mode OK:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: GT-i9100
CUSTOM BINARY DOWNLOAD: YES (3 counts)
CURRENT BINARY: CUSTOM
I'm guessing I can use Odin to install a new OS / firmware.. right? .....right? I would start trying to fix this myself, but I'm guessing the chances of me breaking this even further are *really high*.
If anyone can offer any help, a terrible n00b would be extremely grateful.. Hey if you want any Unity3D advice in exchange, let me know
You have a bootloop. Just download the correct firmware for your phone and flash through odin.

Oh, I *can* get into clockwork recovery mode, for what it's worth.

Apologies for being a vile, horrible n00b, but where do I get the correct firmware from? I don't want to make any further mistakes. Could I continue trying to get cyanogen on this?

Vile & horrible, lol.
Don't worry mate. Just get it back to a level playing field and then think about custom ROMs, like CM.
Look at the xda bookmarks in my sig and get the official firmware thread. Just get a recent one from there and flash. You should be good to go after that. Everything you need to know is in the 1st post of the thread.
Incidentally, don't listen to anyone that tells you you "need" to do anything. Get the thing working and just use it. A lot of phones are definitely better with custom stuff on them, but this phone really doesn't need it for a great experience. Once you know it well enough to know what more you want then you can start getting custom ROMs in order to do that. Seriously, the stock version of the SGS2 is still better than most phones out there with the best custom ROMs available. It just depends what you want out of it.
ITS WORKING AGAIN!!
Thankfully I made a backup.. and i restored it using clockwork recovery mode.
I want to use it for development, and I am a nerd, so I want to mess around with it a bit.. so now it's working again, back to cyanogen, and to work out what I did wrong!

Glad you got it working mate.
I tried CM7 recently myself, and despite being very careful and following the instructions to the letter I ended up stuck on the boot logo. A reboot into recovery mode fixed it though, automatically, so no harm done.
I guess there's no black and white in these things. Sometimes, "something" just goes wrong.
What kind of development are you gonna be doing? Are you gonna be the next big thing in ROMs or apps?

before doing any more messing around make sure you take a backup of your efs folder this contains your imei number and other stuff. if that buggers up, then you will not be able to fix it yourself. see this thread for a guide of how to backup your EFS folder.

hello all,
i have followed entropy512's thread here to get my at&t samsung galaxy s2 rooted with stock settings...i then wanted clockworkmod recovery so i went to this and followed directions to get everything installed...everything was ok and working until a few weeks ago when the 'Check Update' option under Setting stopped working...
basically what happens is when i goto Settings-> Software Update->Check for updates->Hit OK (Check the AT&T server for new software update?) a dialog comes up that says 'Checking for software updates...' and nothing happens...i have left the phone over night with device management app checking for software updates... when this used to work, it took less than 1 minute to check...
finally, the only way for me to stop this is to go and force stop Device Manager under Applications->All, so before i restore the phone to factory, i was wondering if anyone knows what might be the issue here?
Thanks,
FI

OTA updates require factory recovery. I'm a bit hazy on the details but I believe CWM, in short, replaces that.
It might also be because you either turned off/uninstalled or inadvertently removed factory bloatware.

This. Amongst other things. If u insist on trying to eventually upgrade to whatever crap gets pushed out to us yer best bet is to do a full wipe to completely stock firmware.

once again, the issue is not weather i should worry about updates or not nor did i search for if i should worry about updates...this option was working and something happened that caused it to stop working...and my searches i did was around getting device management to connect to the dm server (which is where the 'Checking for update' got stuck)

both of you seem to be spot on...i didnt realize that removing bloatware which was marked as 'ok to remove' on the document of things to remove safely could have been the issue...initially i had frozen them using titanium...neway i restored the phone using the CWM backup i had and the option started working like expected...thanks for the input

Do you recall all the issues with UCKK6 Gingerbread? That was an AT&T release. The devs had to tear it apart to debug and try to fix it. Any build will have bugs in it. But generally, custom firmwares will have fewer bugs than AT&T firmware.

if my research that i conducted a while ago is right, then basically samsung has implemented a flash counter which increments each time you flash a custom, non-stock rom...it might also be applied to non-stock kernels/firmwares as well (im not too sure)...so to prevent the flash counter from ever incrementing, ill need to put the phone in download mode using the jig and continue from there...

This is wrong. It is only incremented when you use ODIN to flash nonstock items. CWM has no bearing on flash counters.

You have some bad information...but I have some good news for you.
The flash counter only counts the number of times you've flashed a custom kernel in download mode via Odin. Using CWM to flash anything can't touch the flash counter. Same goes for Mobile Odin. I've been rooted and flashing for months, I don't have a jig, and my counter is still at zero.
EDIT: Ninja'd by a pirate!

Any GB issues only surfaced if you updated to 2.3.6. 2.3.4 for a "stock" firmware was pretty awesome. I'm on the latest ICS leak from ATT (LD4) and aside from the emmc bug (I'm using a safe kernel so I don't have it) IMHO its more complete then CM9 was. I stopped using CM9 at the end of May and don't miss it at all now.

I reccomend roms that use i9100 bases as they are usually better, roms like phonebricker, and shostock2 are good, my favorite touchwiz based rom though is serendipity 9. But thats my experiences so try them for yourself (i use aokp as my daily though.)

Don't ever use ROM manager. Ever.
Read the stuff linked in the sticky at the top of this forum. And I mean read *all links*. They'll show you how to mod your phone safely and teach you the ins and outs of modding an SGH-I777, and keep you from bricking your device. Once you've read everything (and please read carefully! reading more than once may help), if you don't fully understand anything after that feel free to ask questions.

I know it's not always the fastest option, but searching for an answer that you're not sure of really is the best way to learn. The more familiar you become with the search tool and which terms you need to find your answers, the easier it'll be for you here. Not trying to be a **** at all, just letting you know. Rom Manager had been known for a long while now as being buggy and unstable for our device. Not saying it doesn't work for other devices extremely well, but our kernels come packaged with CWM, which is different from most phones, as you can normal flash a recovery separately from the kernel.

I made the ROM Manager mistake
I didn't see the warnings about using ROM Manager until it was too late.
Now here's the weird thing that happens (big problem!). As soon as I read the warning, I uninstalled ROM Manager and flashed a new kernel and did a factory reset. This should have wiped ROM Manager from my SG2, but it didn't. When I go into CWM Recovery mode, the ROM Manager icon (the circular arrow with the hat) appears at the center of the screen. When I try to execute a command in CWM, whether Wipe data or Install from SDcard, the screen goes black except for that icon. Nothing happens. The only way to reboot is to pop the battery. The phone works fine with Gingerbread and the phone is rooted, but I want to be able to flash an ICS ROM from xda.
Somehow, some aspects of ROM Manager remain on my phone.
Any ideas on how to get rid of it?
Thanks in advance.

Okay folks. I built this for those of you who prefer to be on a mostly stock kernel.
It is all stock except you can write to /system, and adb shell as root.
I will not be modifying, maintaining, updating, or otherwise doing anything else with this.
If you are coming from my other kernel, you need to flash the return to stock zip in the OP of that thread first to restore your files.

since the kernel now supports write to system you can now root from the phone interface instead of recovery now... so yes SU's should work fine
Thanks for this! I've been enjoying the bullet-proof stability of UKB with stock kernel. Delighted to now have a writable system without the ups and downs of undervolting, overclocking, etc.

Thank you, very much. I, for one, had some issues with freezing and SOD's on the more customized kernel, but I just kept my mouth shut and used this one, rather than make a big deal of it. I appreciate the work you do and wish there was some way I could help with the development of the other kernel. Not that you need it, but I'd be happy to do any testing and provide logs, should the need arise. Thanks again for all the work. It is most definitely appreciated!

Keeping your mouth shut doesn't help. Posting as much info about when/what/how things happen is what helps. And not going nuts about it LOL.

I'm fairly proficient in adb... definitely not a pro, but I am able to work my way around. I'm going to try 2.3.1 and see how I do with it. If I experience any issues, I'll definitely post any info I can. I want to get more active in the community to give back to those who have given so much to me over the years. Without XDA and dev's like yourself, I might as well have an iPhone.
I also promise to make every effort NOT to go nuts about anything, However, bananas are an entirely different matter. ;p

So can I just DL and flash this in recovery, or do I need to follow the steps of your custom kernel?
