did some searching and couldnt find an exact answer I was looking for about this.
Rooted my G1 back in the day and partitioned the sd card. have since upgraded to vibrant and im looking to root. will this partitioned sd card have any negative consequences to rooting my vibrant. how do i know which partition to place the .zip files in, or does that matter as long as i can find them in a file manager?
thanks in advance.
hope you not partitoning through clockwork cause u will brick internall memmory , unless u partitoning external sd u good to go i use program called paragon partiton manager for my ext2 ext4 fat32 rfs jfs needs iv partitoned my ex sd to ext4 so i ccan have dedicated partition for my apps insteadd of placing them on internall memmory. good luck.
never ever ever partiton your internal memmory unless u know what you are doin ,knock your self out regarding external sd and no it wont affect rooting process. (you can replace external sd ,u cant repllace internal sd and iv heard stories of people that ruined internall memmory by partitoning internal sd, hard brick bc of sd failing from partitoning)
ok, i think i understand. since i have just partitioned the external sd card i wont have any problems rooting. is that correct? not even sure how to access the internal memory yet. have to look into that. now if i want to load a custom rom on here. which part of the partition would i put the .zip file in.
wrong put the zip file on your INTERNAL SD not EXTERNAL ...clockwork dont mount exteranl sd in recovery so externnal sd doesent get even mounted in recovery meaning its usles.....zip files it belongs just on INTERNAL SD no folders just file by it self . simple .
Ok thanks youve beena great help.
thank you.it was great talking to You too .
Hi, is it possible to increase the size of the partition where the apps are located? in other devices like my iPad I can use the total amount of disk space for apps but in my Galaxy SII if I want to have lot of apps I have a small 2gb partition. Do you know a solution? I need more space for apps...
Thanks!
Are you talking about the internal or external (SD card) disk?
I think the internal disk space is fixed to a custom partition, but if you're using App2SD or any similar script with a partition inside the SD card, you can repartition that partition to fix your needs without problem with any partition editor (like GParted).
I'm talking about the internal memory of the SII ... In other gadgets like Apple we have the entire disk space to install applications if we like.
Do you know a method to increase the space of the app partition? I think that is not a great solution to depend of an SD card, we have a lot of memory on the phone. I don't know why samsung have limited to 2GB the data partition, I think is too small...
Any idea about resize the partitions of internal memory?

Don't know if its possible atm...
What do you have installed that you need +2Gb for apps? Have you considered moving some apps to SD?
/data partition has 2Gb
/sdcard has 8Gb
Both partitions are from the internal memory so moving any app from /data to /sdcard won't affect your speed, since both are internal memory...
PS: Despite the name, /sdcard is internal and /sdcard/external_sd is the external SD Card mounted on the phone.
Hi! AzureusPT thanks for your help... The problem is when I try to move to Sd card a message appears saying that I have to insert an SD Card... so I think that is not possible to move applications to /sdcard internal memory.
Do you know another method?

sd card means micro sd card.. the /sdcard is the internal sd card w/c you can store data internally.. external sd card is your memory card.. the way android works is (or sgs2) has 3 partitions, 500+ for rom, 2gb for applications and tge rest for storage.. for games like gameloft which has huge amount of data, the installer itself is in thr 2gb partition while its data is stored in the 11gb + partition.. so no need to worry about running out of space

1. I'm a little confused about the phone's memory..
So there is the SD card, and there is the 10gb memory.
If I use clockwork recovery.. and perform a full wipe/reset/factory, does everything in the 10gb internal memory card get deleted?
Or can I keep files in it?
2. Shouldn't we have a question forum about now??
I mean.. its about time.. more and more people are getting the phone everyday.. come on..
AFAIK there are two SD Cards, one come pre-installed from HTC which gave us 10Gb after reverse some 6Gb for the phone/system and the phone identified it as SDCard. The second one will be add-on as per user's option and the phone will identified it as SDCard2 or Ext_Sd card
Perform a full wipe/reset/factory will not delete your files on that 10Gb SDCard and/or the ext-sdcard that you may have had put in
Others may know better and may corrected me if I'm wrong

Your phone has 16 gigs of memory (when they say 16 its usually truly about 14 gigs), about 2 are allocated for installing programs, however their data can be allocated to other places such as the external SD or internal SD. For example if you install a game with a big data file such as asphalt 6 the main program is installed in the 2 gig part, most programs should be more that a few kilobytes to 10-20 megs max. Their data however can be installed onto the SD card if the program allows it. If you have root, you can force even programs that do not allow SD card allocation to be installed on to the SD card, but this may ending up messing up the program...for example if you install a widget onto the sd card it will stop working. It needs to be in that 2 gig partition
older phones like the Nexus one only had about 256 megs of free space for programs, so such things as sd ext. partitions were made in the external SD cards to make the program and phone think that this is an extention/part of that 256 partition that can be used as programs thereby increasing space to install programs.
-External SD, is an SD card you put in your phone
-Internal SD is a partition of that 16 gigs and is allocated to save things on such as videos, music etc. the
-sd ext partition is a partition that you could make on an SD card to think that it is where the programs can be installed and used (not their data, just the main program itself, problem with this is if you're using a slow SD card, some programs can have lag) in our amaze since we have 2 gigs to store programs, there is little worry about running out of space, unless you're insalling like 500 programs...then you could partition your sd card to be sd ext
there are sd ext1, sd ext2, sd ext3 and sd ext4 that I know of...To learn more about those search on google. I forget exactly what the differences are, and not all roms/phones are compatible with all the sd ext types.
hope I didn't confuse you.

not true, performing factory reset from settings menu, gives you the option of deleting both internal and external sd, you MUST uncheck those boxes if you wish to have those data remain intact and not deleted.
dude thanks.. but that was a huge long explanation..
I sort of knew that.. im no noob, but you can post that on General.. I'm sure it would answer a lot of noobish questions..
Im just asking if the non user SD gets deleted.. I come from another phone which the only SD was the one you put in..
So this whole thing of 2 memories (inside and outside) is confusing to me..
So just to be clear, with a wipe.. does the internal SD get erased, yes, or no?
(and thanks.. i thanked u both)
Will it considered abusing the thanks button if I thank you for thanked me (j/k)
If you use clockwork recovery, 10GB internal space is untouched unless you want to format them. Full/Factory wipe deletes the internal SD space of user data and apps.
I usually keep my personal files during full/factory/reset while I need to do flashing.
But no one knows It's always better to backup any important files

if you go under settings > storage . and scroll to the bottom click factory data reset, gives you two options. make sure the one that says erase all data is not checked...if you don't have an external sd "erase sd card" is grayed out, if you do make sure that one is unchecked as well...if you check those.
Erase all data deletes internal SD.
Erase SD card deletes External SD.
does that help?
I believe if you do it from custom recovery it will not delete any of the internal or external. but check with binary again.
Hopefully this isn't a stupid question, but is the internal SD in ICS a partition or a directory on the system that pretends to be an SD card?
If it's a partition then I don't really see the benefit over an external SD - except where there is no SD slot. Obviously if it's a directory then it would grow as required...
Hope the question makes sense!
Ok, Obviously the question either doesn't make sense, or nobody knows. Or, it's just such a stupid question that no-one can be bothered to answer it... Hoping it's not the first one - not sure how to word it better to be honest.
It's a partition.
Thanks for the reply. I must admit, then, that it seems a little odd on phones like the S3 - where there is an SD slot - to have an internal SD as well. How is this any advantage at all?

In my opinion? Non whatsoever. I find it a disadvantage the apps saves data to the "external" storage, and it end up in the phones internal memory, non removable, lost if the phone breaks down, fixed size, etc. I'd rather see they put this storage to use as internal storage (/data) instead. The storage getExternalFilesDir() returns ought to be ... external. Period.
The internal SD is more of a legacy setting where older and cheap phones have very little storage so large program files had to be saved on an SD card. Now that many phones have adequate internal storage the /sdcard directory is just internal memory that is mounted as a virtual SD card. If the device has an actual SD card slot and adequate internal storage then the real SD card is mounted as /sd-ext. This allows you to swap SD cards easily since no program files are written to it. It is kind of confusing though.
Hi
Long story short .. i formatted my sd card by lg v20 and i can;t recover my files ... tried many applications but nothing been found!
Is it true that LG does wipe the data completely or it';s a lie from the DATA recovery company which i ask to help?
If someone can advice please do so.
@AhmedQatar
What are you speaking of - internal SD-card or external SD-card? What's partition's name you want to recover data from?

An external one .. 32 GB.
I was trying to recover pictures and videos!
@AhmedQatar
Chances to retain data from a formatted SD-card are equal 0.
Anyway: If you plug the SD-card into Windows computer's SD-card slot, is it detected? If YES, then try out Zero Assumption Recovery tool.
