Camera AOSP vs TW - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my GSIII and even though I have spot metering on, the phone still doesn't base the ISO on the spot I touch in the frame. It basically functions as center metering. I'm considering flashing an AOSP ROM because I'm not thrilled with TW at all. The menus aren't graphically appealing to me, that's all. Can anyone with the AOSP camera that uses this feature get back to me? I know it's not a DSLR but even the Sense camera on my older HTC phones allowed me to choose what to base the lighting of the photo on.
Consequently, as a side question, is EVERY AOSP built on CM? Are there none that are based off pure Vanilla Android without anyone else's input or modifications? Maybe a straight port of the newest Nexus?
Thanks all!!

I thought SuperNexus might be Vanilla. Anyway, I'm more concerned about the cameras. Anyone know about the ISO issue and whether it works on AOSP?

Just going to try to bump this once to see if anyone can help. I can't believe nobody else has used this feature in the past. I just want light metering to be based on where I touch in the frame before taking a photo. Maybe I'm using spot metering wrong?

[Q] Various cameras? What exists, what's available?

I've played with several roms, shiftsense, liquidsense (several versions)..
Most of these roms all have different cameras. I'm curious if its possible to install "just the camera app" and have particular versions.
I'm looking for the one that allows you to make panoramic shots, built in. I know there are apps in the market that do this, but they suck in comparison to the one thats come with different versions of roms, built in.
I'm currently running liquid smooth v3.2, its got what appears to be the camera from android 1.0, from 5 years ago.
Skyraider 1.3 has panorama built in and coming from liquid myself I have to say that the change isn't so bad. Deep customization is still there and battery life on Imo's 5.1.0 is amazing.

Android didn't exist 5 years ago. The first commercially available phone to run Android was the HTC Dream (AKA G1), released on 22 October 2008.
Android was around before the G1 technically...but that's another story. Anyway, I use the MIUI camera on my Thunderolt running CM7, with the stock camera as a backup since the particular MIUI camera I have installed doesn't support the front camera. The only problem is if you use both cameras, after switching back your pictures will look screwed up when taken, though they look normal when you actually view them later. I should update mine now that I think about it...

you mean that weird color in miui cam? Try setting resolution to 8mp

This might be a terrible question but is it at all possible to install a sense based camera on an aosp rom? I love aosp but hate the camera with a passion.

No, you need to have Sense to use a Sense camera. Kind of sucks, the Sense camera is *****in'.

ICS Camera?

Anyone have the proper ICS camera apk? I tired a few(AOSP Rezound port and CM9 to name a few), but none of the were working right. I was able to get one to work right, and it worked pretty fast, but images were limited to 2mp, and none of white balance features were working correctly. Thanks.
Anyone, please?
It's stuck @ 3mp at the moment, not sure if anyone is trying to fix that or not. The HTC camera software is pretty much just as fast if you turn off the preview. ICS software is still a bit quicker when the flash is on, otherwise they're virtually the same in speed.
Why is the ICS camera limited at 3MP currently?

That is how it works when it is built from AOSP source. You need to add proprietary HTC stuff to get the full quality. That is how it was explained that Oxygen (pure AOSP) had low megapixels on the HTC desire vs. CM7 that was high quality. The guy making it wanted pure aosp, so he would never add the htc camera stuff that was needed for better pictures.

[Q] Now that the kernel source etc is out, why aren't cameras working?

I wanted to get an understanding of the situation. What are the main hurdles to getting all the cameras on the tab working on all the ROMs? Is there something else that they are missing? Are there other components that need to be released by Samsung for the cameras to work?
Why is the front-facing camera more challenging than the rear?
I'd love to hear from some of the devs about this. It's really interesting stuff!
Back cameras already working in the ROMs I used, front camera needed the 3.1 kernel and a little extra mods, so far most of the Jellybean ports for my 3 Android devices have literally everything but FFC working... It's probably just a PITA across devices

That sounds great! Could you explain a little more about the front facing camera (explain like I'm 5).
No one is looking into fixing the ffc as a feature of its own. They are all busy building the 3.1 kernel for CM based on the lastest sources. They want to get CM9 to a "stable" release, this includes missing features like the ffc as well. When they are done, the camera will work.
Front camera would be great. I'd rather have front then rear camera since taking photos with a tablet is anything but comfortable. Front camera on the other hand would be a treat for Skype.

Is there any way to follow the development status of this?

[Q] CyanogenMod + Camera question

Will the camera ever work well with Cyanogen Mod or is it largely software based in Sense?
i've taken some seriously amazing shots with this camera - better than the photos i was getting with the iphone 5 i had before the One.
a shot i took
Is that shot from a Sense ROM or CM?
stock.
just hoping that i don't lose that quality for CM (which i'd like to have).

My advice is to take a few test shots of things you think are representative of your tastes in mobile photography with your Sense set up,make a backup of your current ROM, flash CM & try to take the same photos with the stock JB camera and compare them side-by-side.
Seems like the only direct and fully satisfying way to find out.

I suppose that's the best option. hoping the JB camera comes through and i can rock this phone with bare android.
I'm running cm10 and my wife is running stock. Sadly pictures come out why better on hers. Pictures seem to blur a lot on CM10. I'm considering going back to stock honestly.

Camera

Kind of a nub question regarding aosp camera v. TW - when one refers to the TW camera as being superior to aosp, is that because of the features offered or pic quality/software? In other words, does the software make a difference when you have the same processor, same lens, etc.?

It's mostly the features, but yes there is software processing that happens when you take a pic. For example when the HTC One came out it had overexposure issue, and they pushed out a firmware update to correct this. So basically since the TW camera app was written specifically for Galaxy devices it'll use the camera in a better way than AOSP which is designed to work with pretty much any camera.
The TW camera app has proprietary stuff that only works with touchwiz. Samsung paid good money for it, and will never give it out.
So, basic if you want the most out of the camera, you'll get it from TW because it can fully optimize it.
