So I really like the Nexus Tablet, but am really saddened by the fact that it doesn't have SD card.
I was doing some googling and I came across the new NFC SD cards. These are designed to add NFC to devices that don't have them; but would it be possible to use them to add SD capabilities to NFC devices without SD card slots?
http://www.tomsguide.com/us/Android-iPhone-NFC-MasterCard-PayPass,news-13857.html
It would need to be plugged into something obviously. I wonder if there is some sort of credit card shape device that could power an NFC SD card?
What would be awesome is if there was a nice NFC keyboard/case that added an SD card slot. If that existed I'd buy it and a Nexus in a hearbeat.
Have you considered this?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33443612
I really don't want anything attached, but hanging off of the tablet. Either inside (like an SD card) or separate (like an NFC SD card)
NFC has low throughput (424Kbit/s max), not suitable for large file xfers. If going wireless, wifi is your only choice, and current solution would be limited to the Seagate GoFlex Wifi drive (it doubles as a repeater so you can access its content while maintaining Internet connection).
Miracast, which was built on Wifi Direct, was recently announced, too recent for products to be introduced AFAIK. But presumably some time next year you should see Miracast-enabled devices that allows high-throughput P2P. That would take advantage of the (again) presumably HT40 mode on the N10. Note that all of this is based on announcements and paper specs, and real functionality may be as late as a year away. Moreover, Miracast, while ostensibly an "official" standard, may lose out to Apple's proprietary AirPlay, or Intel's Wi-Di.
Mobile connectivity is a work in progress. 801.11ac, currently in Draft 3 mode, should be ratified some time in 2013, and should see greater adoption next year in mobile devices. Vendors will always look for an edge to hawk their wares, and the high-res LCD angle is pretty much tapped out. High speed connectivity (wireless) is an obvious hook, since onboard storage will always be limited, and multimedia will need to be streamed.
I'm coming to the conclusion that the SD-less Nexus deal is a business decision rather than a tech decision. Goog sez: "I need a cheapo device with great specs to push the platform. In addition to the perks of being a preferred partner, I'll cripple it to allow you to differentiate. Nexus device will come with little storage and no SD slot." This has been true for all Nexus toys to date, even with devices that already has existing SD slot, eg the LG Optimus G being sold for $549 unlocked. Goog had to dumb the N4 down enough to justify the $300 price point.
Wifi hard drives probably would be better.

Scratch that then. The GoFlex seems interesting, but there is no need for a 500gb spinner drive.
Idea #2 WIFI SD card reader. I.e. Something can could read http://www.eye.fi/products#product_comparison.
Ideally the wifi would be on the reader, and not the SD card though.

There are many possible docks for this device. A keyboard for example could have a microSD port.

This is my biggest question. I would love to get a nexus 10, but with no SD slot i feel very limited. If i new it would come with a keyboard that featured a SD slot built in, i would LOVE that.

long battery life, portable, exactly the same as the GoFlex basically.
There is a forum topic where an internal micro sdhc reader was added. I plan to do it after my warranty is out further cause I am unsure if I need to warranty it right now with an issue I keep seeing.

Close; but I'd prefer something just a touch smaller, and with removable SD cards. Also it *MUST* function while charging, and that one does not.

Why is making one such a big deal? Any company with the means for mass production could make silly profit releasing microsticks, there are like 100.000.000 devices with no microSD slot.
Anyways... do these devices naturally support external storage via USB or does it take extra tweaking (and risking warranty)?

I think it has something to do with micro usb ports not being as robust as usb ports and easier to break.
Imo them tiny usb sticks are surely small enough to dramatically lower the chance of damaging the micro usb port.
Even though there is almost no chance you could ever have an NFC SD card reader (NFC is only meant for transferring very small amounts of data, in the killobites range), there is this remedy on the way (If it gets funded).
And until then there is CHEAP ebay products...

For most, if not all android devices, you need to root your device and download a 3rd party app to get it to mount usb storage. So it wouldn't exactly be simple plug 'n' play for your average consumer. That's probably the biggest obstacle to mass-market production of micro usb memory sticks.

No, this is the other way around: it makes host-enabled PPC devices talk to disks, it doesn't make the PPC a disk. And the XDA cannot do host mode, so we can't use it...
Well, you could carry a USB infrared adapter with you everywhere you go! Infrared works quite well for just file transfers.
A better solution...
Hi guys,
I've found the best solution for this kind of thing is to get a usb-key like the Sandisk Cruzer which accepts SD cards. The biggest advantage is speeeeed. I use it to transfer my files to the XDA instead of activesync because it is so much faster. Easy to carry around too
Mine came with a 256mb card for AU$160 (about 65 uk pound or approx US$100).
Why not carry a usb sd card reader writer, it is autodetected, no software needed and is the simplest way of tranferring files between multiple machines. And its cheap.
this one is pretty damm small
http://www.sandisk.com/consumer/cruzer.asp
this one is usb2 but it looks a bit larger
http://www.sandisk.com/consumer/sng_usb2.asp
i think they also have some mem even without a sdram in them
like an usbkeyring but i'm not sure
i have the sandisk cruzer 128mb
i usually leave it in my car... if i ever goto a friends house or to work on someones pc, i can run out to the car and grab 128mb to take with me. hell of alot easier than using multiple floppies or burning a cd just to transfer a few files...
definately a cool product thow. especially transfering things to a card that can be used in the xda cause they both use the same card.
cruzer even works on my apple ibook g4.
i think now they sell them with 256mb cards...

It got me thinking, as people have questioned about the lack of USB port for the simple convenience of popping in a USB memory stick for the ad hoc transfer of data.. that getting one of these alongside the microSD cards they're invariably going to buy, would solve the problem nicely..

If you search Amazon for :

cool..think I'd want a faster card though..
They're not micro SD, but you could look at trying one of the EyeFi wireless SD cards
tbh this was a concern for me at first but its not really a issue transfering dataf rom my PC to my pad via wireless a or the USB cable

I can report here that this solution is EXCELLENT for the folks here in North America. I also agree that the slot on the t-former to put it into is quite fiddly. I needed a pair of tweezers to get it all the way in and for the springs to lock it in place.

Throw one of these bad boys in there (assuming the Transformer would recognize it) and you could get 96GB on the tablet without the sd slot in the dock:
http://www.kingmax.com/news_info.asp?fid=145&id=2030
I wonder how much that would cost?
I will admit that that would be super wicked but I doubt the tab would recognize it.
iirc the microSD slot on the tablet itself is only SDHC, which is 32gb max, this guy is SDXC, which is supported in the dock but not the tablet, as per Asus.
Who needs that much space? What are you saving on your tab? i have not even touched my 16GB onboard and let alone my 32GB SD Card

As long as there exists a way to utilize local external storage, people will find a way to fill up said storage. For those of us that keep large collections of movies, music, photos, and games, cloud storage is simply not sufficient.
Personally I have over 200GB worth of music alone, so an external hard drive is my only option if I want to be able to take it all with me on my Transformer. I can't imagine how much it'd cost for enough cloud storage to handle my music collection.

CLOUD is not ftw! It all depends on the quality of your internet connection and its always requires that you are online to have access to your storage.
Umm, why settle for a 64gb SDXC.....? If you're burning money just go all out and grab one of these

Apparently the micro sdxc cards should work in the microsd card slot as well as the 'normal' sized sdxc cards in the dock when they are made available, so 4tb (2tb micro sdxc +2tb sdxc) of extra storage isn't looking too bad for the future (when re-mortgaging the house isn't necessary to purchase them).
There's conflicting theories on whether the microSD slot will support SDXC capacities, and I can't seem to find anyone that has actually tried it, since obviously no one can actually get their hands on a micro SDXC card yet. I don't think we'll know for sure until someone is able to try it.

Quite true, but the sdxc cards were designed to work, and be backward compatible with sd card readers (once the driver is installed), so even if it's not an official feature from Asus it will more than likely become an official feature by google for android and therefore be possible to implement in the future. Link for more info here:

Whatever happens there's always hope, for a storage behemoth.

Sorry but I think you misunderstood the page you linked to. An SDXC card will only _ever_ work in SDXC capable hardware.
Only Use SDXC Memory Cards in SDXC Devices
SDXC devices are backwards compatible, so they accept SD and SDHC memory cards. SDXC memory cards must only be used with SDXC devices and should never be used in non-compatible devices.

Each Transformer SD slot is either SDXC or it isn't. if it isn't it will never be able to use SDXC cards.
@SilentMobius
The only reason they state on that page that SD card slots in 'non compatible' devices wont work, is either because the slot is outdated or there is no easy way to update the drivers to make them read the newer cards (firmware flashes via a computer and usb cables can add features such as these, but most manufacturers only support their latest hardware, and quickly forget about 4+ month old devices). There will be a way to update the drivers in the TF, and Android devices have a long lifespan, as I think everyone on these forums would agree.
Granted there have been a few minor revisions of the SD card socket over the years, but the ones based on the more modern revisions should be upgradable to SDXC compatibility via drivers. It all comes down to what slot, as you say, they have put in the device and the jury is still out on that one, as there are no visible markings internally to specify.
As we all know SDXC cards work in the dock reader, even though Asus dont state this on their specification sheet any more, so the same should/could be true for the micro slot. As they are only just appearing on the market, we shall find out in time.

Wow... the specs on the Nexus 7 Tablet by Google (built by ASUS) are incredible. It comes with Jelly Bean (Android 4.1, successor to ICS). 1280x800 display. Quad-core CPU. I don't mean to be an ungrateful dic<, but the pace of development for the Nook Color Tablet just hasn't been as fast as I've enjoyed for all of the other Android devices I've owned (Motorola Droid-X; Samsung Droid Charge; Motorola Razr MAXX). The Nexus 7 is going to sell for $200.00. I think I'm going to see if Craigslist can turn my Nook into a hundred bux and I'll move to up to a device that is ready for primetime now.

The device for this forum does not have color in its name. The Nook Color had tons of development for over a year and continues to have it. The Droid Charge had minimal development as it was not a very popular phone and the maxx....well its a locked motorola phone, yippee.
With that said, the minimal development you see here is the fault of B&N IMO. If they had released the 8GB model on launch, perhaps it would have been the Nook Tablet that was destroying the 7" market, and not the Kindle Fire. More owners generally means more development.
$50 means a lot more than better specs to the average consumer when you're talking about a cheap, 7" media consumption device.
Actually, it ships with Jelly Bean, not ICS.

Didn't mean to ruffle your feathers. Sorry. I wasn't trying to start a flameout over something as trivial as a tablet.
I used to feel the same way as you about the SD card slot. I never would have considered a tablet without one. However, I have never used the SD slot in my existing 16gb Nook Tablet. I (my kids, actually) only use it to play games and to stream video off of the family video library. I agree that having an SD card slot would be preferable. Case in point, my Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet has a micro SD slot, a full-size SD slot and a USB host port. I use the full-size SD slot all the time to display pics that I've just shot on my SLR. Having more and different ports is always a good thing, but lack of a slot won't be a dealbreaker for us given the way that my kids will use the device.
I would also expect that this would be much easier (if not stock) to have a functioning USB host, allowing you to mount USB drives which could almost make up for the lack of SD. Also I don't need to even go into the hardware. I do feel like the Nook is probably more solidly built. If I would have been buying a 7" tablet soon I would have definitely held off to see how this nexus tablet turns out. If for some reason development on the 3.0 kernel is at a stop I would probably do the same, but for now the Nook is working fine.

Keithn,
Is there a ROM for the Nook Tablet that is not in beta that you like? I bought my daughter this Nook. It supplants the two iPads and four iPod Touches that she and my other kids share. I haven't done much with the Nook other than to root it, install an alternate launcher, install Google Play, etc. It's ok for the kids to play games on and OK for streaming video the family NAS video library. But it still seems kind of kludgy. As near as I can tell, there's a CM9 Alpha being worked on and a CM7, which I think is a Beta. If there's any other ROM out there for the Nook, I'm not aware of it. For every phone I've owned, there's always been about dozen different ROMs available. Is there a ROM that you like? I'll probably buy the Nexus 7 regardless (because I'm ridiculous techslut), but I'll keep the Nook if I can improve it.

SD slot is the dealbreaker, no matter how fast or thin or fancy the tablet is. I want the ability to add as much or as little content as I desire and not need to be near my computer to do it. Looks like a great device but without an SD card slot- it's no Nook killer.

Do you not ever install content by WIFI? I use WIFI File Explorer all the time to move files back and forth from my Android devices. It's unclear to me how using an SD card to move data in/out of and Android device would be a better alternative to WIFI? I mean, even if you're not near your computer as you say, how are you going to get data (that is destined for the Nook) onto the SD card to begin with if you don't a computer nearby? And if it's data to be taken off the Nook, how does putting it on an SD card help until you're "near your computer." Confused. Not trying to be a smartass. Just confused.

I'm primarily on CM7, I'm not too set on whether it's deemed alpha, beta, or whatever. As long as every thing I use it for works I can always modify certain things to make it how I want with, themes, launchers, build.prop tweaks etc. I've tested the 3.0 kernel CM9 and as soon as it's more stable I'll be on that.
If you have never owned a Nexus device you wouldn't understand. I will never buy another non nexus phone, and after today (just put in my preorder) I will never buy another non nexus tablet. I with all the cloud services out there I have no use for expandable memory. The day jelly bean is released there will be several users pleading developers to port it to their devices. With a Nexus device you won't have that problem.

But with SD cards, which are tiny and cheap as hell these days, I can just dump a bunch of content on there, stick the cards in my pocket and swap them in and out of the nook as I see fit. You fill one card up with movies, fill another one up with music, etc. Without the SD card slot, what you have on your tablet is all you're GONNA have on your tablet until you're back at your computer. With SD cards you have far more options. Yeah you have to be at your computer to fill the SD cards, but that's a lot quicker and easier than constantly adding trying to remove and add content via wifi.
Also, SD cards allow you to odd more onboard storage in general. I've got a lovely 32 gig card that I use with my Nook tablet, which holds so much that I rarely have to use other SD cards (though I like having that option). The Kindle and this new Nexus tablet top out at 16, which is pretty small these day. Dump a few movies and apps on there and boom- yer done. Now if they wanna sell a 100 gig version, then maaaaaaaaaaaaybe that'd work, but in the meantime the space they offer is just too limited. And this "cloud" stuff doesn't really help, because downloading big files takes a long time and who knows if yer even gonna be near a wifi source when you need something.
Bottom line: an SD card slot just adds more options. You may not ever need it- but it's sure nice to have it.
Hey Guys, I was able to pickup the nexus 9 16 GB from htc hot deals but have not opened it... I am worried it will be too small and I was planning on selling it off but am not sure what to do.
What are your thoughts? If I get USB-OTG device w/ a big SD card and load TVs/Movies on there will I be ok...?
any thoughts would be much appreciated!

It will be ok, but its kinda weird to have a usb dongle hanging out of your tablet... I personally wouldn't swap it for another tablet, as it really kicks a$$, but 32GB is way more convenient
If you got one of the HTC hot deals, I would use it at 16 GB. I debated and eventually just bought the 32 GB. I hated to spend an extra $80 on what amounts to a couple dollars worth of silicon, but I got enough of a discount on the tablet that I ended up spending the extra $.
I've had a 16GB Moto X for a while now, and I here is what I do. Store most of my music in the "cloud" and only pin albums to my device that I'll want to listen to when in remote areas w/o connectivity. With a tablet, this option depends on how much connectivity you have (cell tether, wifi, etc...). It just takes a little planning to make sure the audio files you want are on your device before leaving wifi.
For video, I use OTG. But OTG didn't work for me out of the box on the N9. I'm sure CF's Stickmount will do the trick or you could probably modify your platform.xml to get OTG to work with something like a Meenova (much smaller than a dongle and regular thumb drive). I haven't tried either option yet as I need to swap my N9 out (hardware issues). Do a little searching out here and see what others are doing for OTG (and both options require root).
Bottom line: for the $200 deal, you can't go wrong.
Dude... if 16GB is to small then so is 32GB...
Its not like all of a sudden you can keep hundreds of bluerays on there or something...
I am just as mad as everyone else with this price gouging on space and yeah if you had 128GB plus.... it would be useful but 16 to 32... just doesn't really make a difference.
Hi there, for OTG ES file explorer does the trick on stock (you just need to find your USB storage in the file directory), unrooted, as does Nexus Media Importer.
can you install apps and stuff on on expandable storage in 5.0 lollipop?
Depends what you use it for.
I have 2 1080 movies couple of apps
No music
Plenty of space left

Hello All,
Lets not forget that the Nexus line of tablets do not ship with SD Card support and do not permit mounting storage devices via USB OTG Cables so you are pretty much stuck with the storage on the device. If you are willing to root, you can enable mounting of storage. CloudStorage and WiFi Storage solutions are your best bet to expand the storage.
going to sell it instead... seems like too much hassle
