Battery gone worst with Jelly Bean - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After I update my SGS3 to jelly bean the battery life time got worst.
When I had the prev version one percent laster 1 hour+ when I didn't do anything with my phone. Now it hardly reaches 1 hour.
I use original rom, no custom roms.
what could be the reason for that?

It's probably the mediascanner. It's broken on all the jelly bean firmwares and custom roms I've tried.
Go to settings, battery and look if you see Media as a big battery consumer. Select it and force close it. As a temporary fix instal the Media Scan app from Google Play. It let's you disable the media scanner process.

I just downloaded the app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...SwxLDEsImNvbS5hZGR6Lm1lZGlhc2Nhbm5lcnJvb3QiXQ..
If thats the wrong app, please advise which app to try
Thanks in advance

Here's the link, it's actually called Rescan Media. My Bad.
And for rooted users, Rescan Media root.

Thanks for the reply,
Ive set it to disable when I quit the rescan media root app.
Will the media scanner enable itself, or is it permanently disabled?

I have the same problem with my battery, the battery life time is so short, i was looking up for a solution, but I think I don't have the media problem that most people have, but I think Google Now could be using GPSd that in my case, is using 11% of battery life. I tried to disable, and see what happend.

anyone?

The things that takes most of battery precentage in the battery section in settings is Screen.
Is this suppose to be like this?

try disabling googe now.
log out of google talk
uninstall maps or, go to setting location setting disable everything, from latitude to auto checkins

Disable google now
Check with better battery stats
Disable 3g and gps when you don't need it.
Places where mobile signal is low are not good.
I get 1% drop idling.
Average use gives me 2 days.
Max use of wifi gives me 9h.

Would freezing media via tb have the same effect?

Google Now wastes a lot of battery on JB. Try disabling location settings. As for wakelocks, download BetterBatteryStats, let in run after charging and check for "Partial Wakelocks". Shows what is keeping your device awake. As for wipe, he probably means factory reset. Shouldn't really need to do it if you're on stock with official ota.
Try the BBS to check what's wasting our battery

For me also Jelly bean is not good as ICS (battery wise am saying)..
In ICS i used to get 24-30 hours with average use............
But.. Recently Flashed JB XXDLJ4 version...........Nothing is doing with even Custom Kernals ...
Hardly getting 18 hours.... thats to vth Night. ...
Actually Jelly Bean is more sensitive and it uses GPU a lot... and it uses both CPU & GPU when u touch screen.... So that everting is like BUtter including Battery Life..:highfive:

i made my screen very dimm , its near dark really
but still said that screen drain 60 %
what should i do ??? GRRrRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

One of the biggest consumers of battery life on JB is Gallery! There is a bug that causes it to kill your battery if you leave it open. Make sure you manually close gallery if use it!

I found that the things that consumes the battery is wifi & 3G.
It didn't happen to me with v4.0.4, what could be the reason for that?

Anyone? Anything?

[Q] Battery life

Hello.
I am on Omega Rom now but I se that battery drains too fast. I lose 1 percent almost every 2 minutes without using the phone.
Is that normal? Can anyone tell me why is happening this or how to fix it?
Also someone know to tell me which is the best Rom with best battery life.
Thanks in advance

Few things you can do to solve this...
Disable Google account sync - only sync when you add a new Contact or want to read your Gmail,
Keep Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS disabled until you really need them,
Check to see if your kernel isn't overclocking your CPU - some kernels automatically 'clock' the chip from the moment the phone turns on,
Check your display settings re: kernel - some settings can run 'display enhancers' that make your graphics look great whilst chewing battery,
Disable Fast Dormancy for your modem - there's plenty of threads/posts about this,
Go into Settings->Apps and make sure there aren't a heap of apps running in background (Task Manager helps with this 'apps killing' too)
For battery life, I've heard NeatROMLite and SlimBean are good...
Hope that helps...
Hi, if you keep wifi, data network, blue tooth, gps ect, turn on, then the battery drains very quickly, either without using the mobile.
And if you keep mentioned above turned off and battery drains very quickly then it should be battery problem. Rom affects on battery when you changes the settings like cpu performance, and set min or max values ect. But usually rom not affacts.
You can use, juice defender and some other apps on play store to save battery life.
I'm using {rom} mysterious Pac i9100, and I'm quite happy with it.
Above is my personal experience, hope it will helps you.
Sorry for bad English.

[Q] Battery Draining Overnight - Android OS 44% of Usage

Hey Guys I am troubleshooting a battery life issue for my boss' wife. Her brand new S4 is draining battery way too fast overnight if not plugged into the charger.
When I pull up her Battery Usage at the top every time is Android OS with a whopping 40-45% of usage.
I have disabled Caller ID, double checked she only have one account synced on her phone and its not happening every 15 minutes or anything. I set her screen brightness to auto (though I know this wouldn't show up as Android OS usage). She is using stock firmware from Verizon and has not really installed much short of a couple games.
What do you think could be causing Android OS to be sucking up so much juice? My Note 2 only shows Android OS as using 10% over 1 1/2 days of usage
Turn off all location reporting stuff under maps, and also download the play store v4.1.10 apk if you are still on 4.1.6. Play store v 4.1.6 has a known battery drain issue and that is why there is a newer one out.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/05/29/download-latest-google-play-store-4-1-10/
Also removing the ongoing wifi thing in teh notification pull down will help as well since it scans for wireless networks like every 4 or 5 seconds. I'm pretty sure she would have to be rooted to be able to flash the MOD.

OK installed Play Store update and rebooting now. She is not rooted, unlocked, nor does she have a custom ROM installed so I'd have to root it if I wanted to add in that mod. This seems like something that should be fixable without a root tho, right?
Thank you for your help btw

Got it. Ok well I did the Play Store update and the location services. I also installed 2x Battery Saver to shut down her wifi when in sleep mode. I'll know if that took care of it tomorrow morning when she brings it in again.
Thanks again for the responses guys. I just know that out of the box this thing shouldn't be draining so fast when its idling!
Its a friggin' Verizon thing. Again they have to be a pain in the a$$ and feel they need to do something to feel like they are better then other carriers by adding and subtracting stuff. The ongoing wifi notification and the removing of the wifi and a couple other toggles in the notification toggles was asinine.
Plus, the battery drain issue with the play store has nothing to do with the phone but a bug from google that was fixed with an update.

A had 70-80% "Android OS" of battery usage and that was because of god damn Play Store 4.1.6 installed on my GT-i9500 and it didn't update for some reason (any suggestions why?). No problem... glad I could help. The reason it didn't update is because Google never pushed it out. They knew there was an issue and put a fix out pretty fast but you had to download it and install manually. I don't know why.

Battery Drainage Problem

I have a pretty bad battery drainage problem. Multidp and 12_hsic wakelocks are prevalent. The most noticeable is the Phone app waking up the most.
Steps I've taken to combat the High battery drainage
Disabled Fast Dormancy
Greenified Facebook, Playstore, PlayBooks and Keep
All but contacts and chrome are checked under the autosync settings
Even tried apps like Juice Defender, but the battery drainage increased to a whole new level; deleted the app
Installed a custom kernel. Undervolted by -50mv
ROM: CrDroid
Kernel: Temasek Kernel
P.S Tried the BetterBatteryStats thread, but no one did help me there. :/ Hope I solve my problem here. Attached the idle dump.
Thanks in advance.

The Problem is The ROM , not the Phone.
Android 4.3 isn't optimized for S3 yet .
That causes Battery Drain Problems.
My Recommendation is that you search another 4.3 ROM or Downgrade to 4.2.2 or lower.
Previous post is wrong.
Your two first kernel wakelocks mean network use. Search for background sync apps, check Wi-Fi advanced settings and disable Google constant search.
Greenify all apps, except the vital ones for your usage. With paid app and xposed framework you can even freeze push message ones.
All this can be found in a couple of minutes with Google.
Some can achieve .2 %/hour in deep sleep with 4.3.
The Rom is not the culprit.
You wont get good battery life on IDLE on AOKP, AOSP or CM ROMs. No matter what you do. battery life is ok while the phone is awake but when it is in deepsleep still it consumes the battery on AOKP, AOSP or CM ROMs.

Yes i know AOSP,AOPK & CM don't have as good an idle drain as the touchwiz ROMs, but in my case we do know the reason. So it has to some other reason

Already had Google constant search disabled. And 4.3 is not xposed framework compatible. So can't use that.

I use xposed framework... It's compatible.
2.1.4 apk framework works well. Some people need to use SuperSu instead of super user, you can put it with a file explorer in system/app, then reboot and run, there is even a cwm zip somewhere to flash the framework directly.

Yes I know it's just 1.1% but you gotta see that this is just an idle drain. When I start using the phone on day to day basis, it doesn't even last the whole evening let alone the whole day. I'm down to 20% by mid afternoon when i unplug my phone at 8 A.M. .
Whereas when I was on stock, as the people above have said, my battery drain was around .4% and the phone used to last around a day and a half with moderate usage. Yes I know that I can never have that good a battery, but atleast I should be able to eliminate most of the wakelocks with this ROM. But the typical methods like disabling FD, greenifying apps etc etc don't seem to work.

[Q] Help me to convert my Stock JB Xperia go to any other custom JB

Hello friends,
I'm using Xperia Go with stock JB version(6.2.A.1.100). The battery life of this stock rom is way too much annoying with 3G on. Example: Last night, charge was up to 82% & at morning it came down to 25%. Now think what if i use data traffic at day
I want a custom JB rom for Xperia Go with a good battery life with 3G on for some hours(which may last one day) & of course with a good ram where less important system apps are not preloaded & as much as low bug possible.
Well! The main problem is I'm not expert in these processes. So if anyone gives me a nice guideline, i will be very grateful
IMPORTANT: MY PHONE HAS LOCKED BOOTLOADER,I saw many people install CWM in their stock JB with locked bootloader & then convert into custom JB rom. I want to use that process, because I don't want to downgrade into ICS as I'm not an expert to do many things right
Seems that i want everything
My Phone: Xperia Go rooted with doomlord kit version 14
Build number: 6.2.A.1.100
Kernel version: 3.0.8+ (I think its the stock kernel)
My pc operating system: Windows 8
One question: When I will install CWM in my xperia before installing custom rom, will I loose every data & does unlocking bootloader wipe data?
@Pias94
In principle, unlockicking bootloader does not wipe any data, however I have seen a few posts that claimed it did.
Rooting should not wipe data waht so ever.
With that said, always backup your phone before making any changes. In any case data on internal storage will not be wiped. only data on device memory (contacts, sms, etc.)
Now to the real issue.
I tend to believe your problem is not the ROM itself, I use stock JB on my XP with decent baterry life.
First check your battery stats to see what takes most of it (no rom will change your screen battery consumption).
Second install Wakelock Detector and see which apps cause wakelocks, especialy screen wakelocks..
Rooting your device should be sufficient to let you tune it for good battery life and performance.
I see DooMLoRD Easy Rooting Toolkit is compatible with your device and firmware version and it is indeed easy rooting toolkit
Well, there are plenty of JB rom's you could try it all depends on you taste.
Regarding battery life, try checking if any apps run in the background.
You can use greenify too, it's an app that hibernates apps so that they don't run all the time
or they don't run on their own and just end up wasting resources and battery.
You could also try different kernels that have different governors.
Underclocking your device below the average helps too, by allot during the long run actually.
Look around the forums, just beyond the first page, sometimes you can find some really neat stuff you might like

Are facebook, messenger & whatsapp always on in stamina prefs?
I have whatsapp, viber. facebook, tahoo messenger, and talk, set to always on in stamina prefs and I only get about 1% per hour standby drain.
Is your movile data on or are you using wifi?
I can see in battery stats the phone is awake most of the time which it' shouldn't be in standby.
Below my stats for today, you can see there very little drain for standby time. I had 5 minutes calls and a bit of data on time, and still only about 35% drain for 12, while you had 40% drain for standby time only, this need to be fixed.
I must note though I have the 98screenstate_script that cap CPU speed when screen is off.
As I said, can't change screen on drain, you can set adaptive brightness or manually low to save some juice, not much though.
We need a bit more detail to know what cause drain.
In WakelockDetector check :"statistics since unplug" in prefs.
Charge battery full, no calls or nothing till next morning, or at least a few hours with no calls or screen on, take screen shots for all 3 wakelocks (screen, cpu and wakeup triggers, battery stats + graph + screen on time.
CPU Spy plus may also help if you install it, reset timers just before you unplug the charger, and take screen shot in the morning.
Hello,
I tried to use two thing.
1."First You Setting--->APPS--->All Tab---->ECO Mode Controller (Click Clear Data and Force Stop)
Then Again you Go Setting--->APPS--->All TAP---Setting.apk (Click Clear Data and Force Stop)
Charge Your Mobile 4 to 5Hours
After 4-5 Hours While Charging That Time You Click Vol Up+Power Button( after 3 times Vibrate)
Remove Your Charger and Again Plugin Your Mobile The Sony Logo With Comes And Charging Logo has been Shown
Then Power On Your Mobile While Charging
Then Go Setting--->Power Management TURN ON BATTERY STAMINA MODE"
After that I saw that charge duration came from 10 Hour to 3 day. But i think still charge is leeching, but a little bit slow.
2. I added whatsapp, facebook, messenger & one other app(360 mobile security) to the stamina prefs as u said.
But though charge leeched from 100% to 64%.
I must say a little improvement. Because is usually go down below 50 sometimes.
My mobile data is 24/7 on.
I've added the screenshots you want.
Note: Just one call came up that time. I couldn't receive though
Mobile data can cause some drain, but I think all traffic goes through wifi if wifi is available, and stamina mode supposed to turns it off when in deep sleep.
Can't make definitive conclusion, but I don't like this messenger, 490 times wakelocks. Why do you need it anyway, you can chat with facebook itself. Is the messenger in stamina active apps?
The active apps that require network can only work if wifi is connected, which apps you have there?
CPU stats look reasonable with 86% at deep sleep, and only 5% above 200MGHz.
Are you rooted, we can try and even lower that if you are.
Force stop the messanger for one day and see how it goes.
The see if turning off mobile data make a change, but don;t do both things at once so we can indentify which cause the drain, or cause most of it.
EDIT: I'll install the messenger on my phone and see if there's a change.

Yes it works, I have used it before but you wil have to set the conditions at parameters yourself, and for some reason not all parameters changed as I wanted them too, but it may be governor issue rather than the app.
I rather a simple script doint it instead.
All yuu need is to flash it in recovery.

Yes I have installed it, but only had 53 alarm wakeups., facebook is on top with 76.
I had an excess drain today.... 15% for 10 hours standby normally Google+ won't wake so much but today its on top of CPU wakelocks with over 1 minute, second is facebook with half a minute, but I think it's an app I made that caused soe of it.

Battery Draining Very High When Phone is Idle

Hello Guys,
My rn3pro battery drainage is very high, it consume 20% of battery overnight. I have been having these problem from few days. I am just ignoring it, but the problem really irritates when you fully charged your phone and after using leave it on 80% and at the morning you found 60% and with open data it 58% i mean 2-3% difference. First i get this problem on miui 6.12.+ And then i use 7.1 rr unofficial and official both give me this problem and then because of no xposed i revert back to miui and now evey ver of miui has this problem, high battery drainage overnight. Then i think flashing kernel would help, so i flashed radon latest but nothing helps.
So, guys pls help me and this is happening from past few days and i have been using rn3 pro from 6 months neverhave that kind of problem. Never get the need to use apps like greenify, and when i checked battery status it shows android system and android as the culprit, but why now, why not before or from 6 months ago when i bought it. I am really irritated.
Anyone.......guys?
Try using naptime in the playstore had good results. Use kernel wakelock detector to see what's using your battery

First of all try to find a reason why battery is draining. if you are experiencing drain on every rom then there might be a common personal app you used on all of them. If you are rooted then download "better battery stats" app and leave it for over night, it will tell you which app or wake lock is draining battery , for better understanding post screens of battery usage so that we could analyze it further. One thing is sure it must be a downloaded app, sucking battery overnight.
Also there are various settings to overcome battery usage of heavy apps such as google services. always deny location permission of app in privacy / permission settings. it will save atleast 15-20 % of total battery usage. further control autostart on apps like uc browser, clock , calendar as they too start in background and suck power,(p.s. uc browser is worst)
regards

Thanks bro, now installed the app, will post the ss at morning.
Now can you pls tell me whats draining the battery?
Because uc browser never before drained so much. Any solution without installing apps like greenify or naptime.

It's clearly seen that UcBrowser eat your battery. 2.5/hr is good though, and something was downloading about 1.3 hr in Uc thats why it was running in background. If you are using xposed then go for greenify, It is very effective. Other way is, as you are on custom rom, I would suggest you to try custom kernel if you want more battery backup (I am on rr-N and radon kernel, getting around 10 hrs SOT).
Regards,

You dont understand bro (i know you do) but the thing is it never happened before and i always use uc browser. Last night when i installed this app i am downloading something and i fell asleep when i woke up in middle of the night then i close my data connection. But as i said before i am on miui 6.12.xx using radol kernel latest (i think it is 3.7), why uc browser is eating battery why not before is something wrong with the hardware or restoring backup from titanium cause it or anything else, the reason why this happening now. Bro in deep sleep i never lose more than 3% of battery power in whole night and now this percentage increased upto 10 times. And i always use uc browser, because of its downloading and site view. But it never sucked that kind of battery before after putting it on download al the night and miui force closes apps itself. And not only miui it happened on every custom rom i installed now a days.

So you had restored titanium backup of nougat to marshmallow or vice-versa? Some time it cause app crashing and many problems. Just try clean flash custom rom and select battery config in aroma installer of radon kernel. Then see if problem still persist. Or just donot restore titanium backup and clean install UC and see how mush it help. (Same to me, my CM13 Apps backup caused many problems in RR-N so after clean flash all well right now)

Thats what came to my mind. I am thinking restoring titanium backup causing uc or may be other apps to suck battery. Because it all started when i start restoring titanium backup. Now i will clean flash the rom. But one thing i wanted to know, does restoring only data from titanium will cause the same results?

Never tried this, but that should not cause any problems as in my case when I restored whole backup and faced app crashing problems was due to installed apk.

Clean flashed the phone at night, after putting alarm the battery reduces hardly 2-3% in whole night. But after installing uc battery started to increase faster and i love uc browser cant uninstall it.
no one is asking you to uninstall uc browser bro
download greenify and hibernate all apps before you go to sleep and go to security->permission->autostart and check that uc browser is not enabled
i am sure this will solve ur battery draining problem
Install fastboot rom latest beta and use it for 2 day and set it up... And then check
Guys i think i catched the culprit. There is an app in my phone named easydpichanger i use it to change my display dpi. When i got 7.x in my phone i changed it dpi to smallest i.e 336 and in miui used it on 330, and when i change it to 400 it stops eating battery (as default dpi is 480 which is way larger on a big screen). Now i am getting good battery backup
Thanks everybody.
Why do you use app for changing dpi?
Why not change in build.prop?
360dpi is HD , 480 is stock FHD

Bro why should i mess up with build.prop when i can do it with just single click
Use easydpichanger
Bro why would you need app for that if you can do that in build.prop...you are just wasting space + dpi changer is not as effective
Just add last line ro.sf.lcd_density=
