I'm deciding on my first smartphone. I've used Sprint's GS2 a lot. I understand at&t's s2 has a better processor but about 5% smaller screen than the Skyrocket. Using at&t's networks with Straight Talk, I wouldn't even really be able to take advantage of 4g LTE speeds with the Skyrocket.
I want lag free gaming (ps1 games especially) and web browser. I heard ICS made the Skyrocket laggy. But tell me, why should I get the original S II, since I see threads about it being superior to the Skyrocket. Thanks.

What about the 5% smaller screen? It looks like all the buttons and fonts would be one size smaller from a 4.52' screen. Why do you call it slowrocket?

Slowrocket, ****rocket. its a fail from samsung. no exynos CPU, no Mali GPU.
same 480x800 screen, but ours is the correct size, not some "blown up" version.
Also, not sure why you're worried about ICS - JB is much smoother imo.

That's nice to know. I kept thinking of trading my i777 in for a Skyrocket bc it has LTE. Is the faster processor on the Skyrocket better the the processor on the i777? Is the LTE even worth it on the Skyrocket?

Why would I be disappointed? Becuase the Skyrocket is laggy and freezes up and has issues or what?

But if I'm doing a lot of gaming, wouldn't the extra screen size help for the on screen controls? The ideal setup is playing on a tv via HDMI with a PS3 controller, but 75% of the time it will probably be on screen playing. I don't even have an MHL cable yet (nor a smartphone for that matter). I'm concerned that the processor of the Skyrocket will lag with PS1 & N64 games or other higher performance games. Also laggy web surfing would be really annoying.

When comparing the processor and gpu on these two phones, I don't think it even really matters. Different apps will run differently on both phones. It's all about software optimization, rather than hardware. And really, it's only resource-heavy 3d games that will be affected by the hardware. And even then, you can have games run better on inferior cpu/gpu if there is better optimization for that particular chipset. I can say that my previous phone, an LG thrill 4g, ran games at a higher frame rate than my i777 does (and it definitely had an inferior chipset). On paper and benchmarks, yes, the i777 has a superior chipset. But in real world application, this is not always the case.
The Skyrocket's screen looks more pixelated IMO because it have the same resolution than ours, but bigger screen. Its more easy to see the pixels there.

I have 5 more days before to return my GS2. i have LOVED it, but im just thinking if i should just return it and get the new skyrocket? any help would be Very much appreciated. thank you
I say yes, love the big screen
Depends on what is important to you. Personally getting the Skyrocket was easy for me. I love the 4.5" screen.
If you care about benchmark stats, then the S2/exynos win.(the Skyrocket is still smooth as butter)
If you care about DPI then S2 wins, the Skyrocket has stretched the same res to 4.5", that said I came from the Infuse so it looks just as great as what made me purchase the Infuse in the first place.
If you have/will soon have (1-6months) LTE, then Skyrocket for sure.
Personally I also believe the Skyrocket will have a better resell value, due to LTE being upgraded over the next year. Anyone in an LTE city is not going to want someones S2 while the Skyrocket will likely still hold some value.
I don't know if it's just me, but going from a 4in screen (Captivate) to a 4.3in screen with the same resolution is not something I'm really liking. It's just everything becoming bigger on the screen. Going to 4.5in while keeping an 800x480 resolution is quite annoying.
I'm shocked Samsung didn't up the resolution for the GSGII line. Or atleast the Skyrocket.

I agree. I wanted a bigger screen, not bigger buttons. Oh well. I'm still very happy with the ogsgs II.
Make a phone with a higher resolution and I'll be tempted.
But still the compatibility we have with the international version is awesome. One of the main points to appreciate about a phone is the dev support. Ogsgs II now has 'worldwide' support.

The Dev support is the major reason I picked up a SGSII on Sunday and not the Skyrocket. Coming from the Captivate, I know how Samsung and AT&T work. Firmware releases are lagged months behind the International version. Meaning, the SGSII will be getting i9100 ports while the Skyrocket might be waiting on AT&T or Tmobile to throw out ICS.
LTE is nice and all, but with my 2GB data I don't really stream videos at all. And the screen size is just getting too big for that resolution. It's one major reason I was considering the Vivid (until I held it in my hand).
The LCD Density can always be changed but it sometimes causes more issues than it fixes.
Samsung DOES have an HD version of LTE - AT&T too cheap to order it...?

Hey Qwerty...
Samsung did come out with an LTE version that has higher resolution, but AT&T didn't bother to order that unit in. In internation market it's known as the Samsung Galaxy SII LTE HD (720 X 1280 @ 720P)
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that AT&T wanted to keep the prices down for the initial offering of their LTE phones to compete with the iphone. Think $200 range and my guess is that the HD version will be priced too high to be competitive.
At any rate here are the specs on the HD version, please try not to salivate!

I saw that a while ago and was really hoping it would be released here. Sadly it's not, and I'm surely not willing to spend $600 on a phone off-contract!
If you have LTE in your area it's well worth the jump, data speeds are just insane. If you are expecting LTE sometime next year, I would assume there will be a better LTE phone available, probably with the higher res screen and possibly quadcore come summer of 2012
It's the same processor and size but higher density screen. But isn't it SAMOLED Plus so it is Pentile and not RGB I assume?
Anyone know where I can get it?
I was just at the AT&T store picking up a Skyrocket and noticed that the OG SGS2 isn't even out on display any more. It appears that they are pulling them already? Anyone else notice this? Did they decide to completely replace it already?

Some are pulling it temporarily to boast the Skyrocket.
And to the poster above, the SR and SGSII don't have the same processor if that's what you were referring to.
yea i think im gonna stick with my GS2 just on pure dev support. i just wish i would know if google nexus s was gonna come to att. and if so, when? then i could wait for that. that 1280x720 screen just is my golden ticket. i dont have lte network here and i doubt i will get it in the next 2-3 years.
Get the Skyrocket trust me you wont regret it, I didn't
There are just to many reasons on why you should get it, the LTE network is amazing. You may not have it but you will eventually. NFC is a great feature that once it gets going you will love it.
The screen is a really good as in the size, color, and everything compared to the ogsgs2 A large factor on the reason I think you should get it is the resell value, the phone is going to have a way greater resale value and once a better phone comes out that you absolutely want to get, you could easily sell the skyrocket for alot more than you would get for the ogsgs2.

Played with the skyrocket today and I gotta admit I'm having a bit of envy, mostly over the screen but also over the shape and the slightly faster processor.
Anyone else having that? The device is huge though which put me off quite a bit.
I guess I'm kind of hoping of being talked out of trading in for one. Is there a legitimate reason to choose the skyrocket over the S2? Aside from screen. I know a root and mods can get me a 1.5 gigahertz processor.
Well the 1.2 Ghz exynos processor is actually faster/better than the Snapdragon 1.5 Ghz. The 4.3" screen size imho is better, at least for me and doesn't look as nerdy The LTE is the only thing that would make me switch but it's not too big a deal yet.
I thought they both used an exynos but the skyrocket was clocked to 1.5 and got an 1800 mAh battery to compensate? I also sort of disregard the lte since I live in an area that will likely not get lte for quite a while.
Nope. Skyrocket got the snapdragon cpu just like the tmobile sgs II did.
The sgs II is a better choice for you, AntwanL Why do I say that?
People don't come to xda for no reason. They want to see what they can 'do' to their phone. And here you are at xda. The sgs II will always have more being done to it than the skyrocket.
If you don't care about modifying android on your phone, then go for a skyrocket. It is a samsung with a dual core phone and 1gb of ram. That's nothing to sneeze at.
A .2 inch bump in screen size and lte, that won't be wide spread for awhile, is not enough for me to get a phone that will have less choices that the alternative, this phone.

Also look in the skyrocket forums and specifically the developers section and compare it to the SGS2 developers section. Plus what the others have said above. To me it is more important to have developers who make our phones better due to having a international phone that is the same.
The ONLY two phones for the skyrocket are the T-Mobile phone and I THINK the Canadian version of the skyrocket. So the developer support will never be as big.
To see how this works look at the support on the older generation galaxy s phones (captivate, i9000) and compare it to other phones that did not have international phone in common with it. The i9000 and captivate still have a great support of developers even with it being an older generation of the phone.

the GS2 is as fast as the skyrocket, despite having a lower clock speed. The reason is the superior GS2 processor. Also, the GPU on the GS2 is superior, so despite similar speed, graphics are much better (and not choppy) on the GS2 than the skyrocket. The skyrocket will never be as hackable as the GS2, and so it will always be difficult or impossible to overclock it much. Despite the GS2 being of similar speed with a 1.2ghz processor, compared to the skyrocket's 1.5ghz processor, I am already overclocking my GS2 to 1.6 ghz and haven't had any stability issues at all. CM7 has the 1.6 ghz overclock feature already baked into the rom, so you don't need to flash a separate custom kernel.
I was going to originally get the skyrocket, but decided to go with the GS2 instead. The processor and GPU superior (and overclocked is much faster than the skyrocket will ever be capable of). Also, the resolution is better and it is very hackable. The only skyrocket advantage is LTE (I went with GS2 despite living in an LTE area and having unlimited data) but this is only a minor advantage. You use the processor all the time, but the data plan only sometimes, and LTE simply means somewhat shorter wait times for downloading.

If you ever think you wished you went with the skyrocket, check out their dev section, or rather lack thereof. Then for icing on the cake look through the q&a section.
I just got done looking though it for a friend who was having the 100% battery problem, and all I can say is wow. Largest collection of new android users that have no idea how to use any android phone.
Not trying to be mean but there's some serious education that needs to go on over there for any large scale progress to be made (cm7 cm9 or miui, much less stock roms). For their sake I hope it happens.

No envy here....Sure the screen is larger and it has LTE. However, I dont live in a area that is likely to see LTE for quite some time and the screen in note a selling point for me only being bigger.
I will wait a year or so to see what the market has at that time. I cant afford to purchase the latest and greatest every few months when a new device with 512mb more memory comes out etc....lol

I just returned my Skyrocket for an original SGS2. I live in an area with LTE (Dallas) and while it was neat, I never felt like it was useful. I just visit webpages and use the navigator and things like that. Even streaming YT videos wasn't much faster....not worth much more than running speed tests and going LOLWTF LOOK AT HOW FAST THIS IS......yeah it's pretty awesome but unless you tether or something, meh. It just never felt any faster than my girlfriend's SGS2.
The battery life was bad (LTE radio + 4.5 inch screen + the slightly faster clocked (but slower overall) CPU overtook the small bump in mAh), reception was bad (I'd have 1-2 bars most of the time for LTE and it would switch back and forth from 4G to LTE all day), and the aftermarket support (physical and developmental) is very lacking of course.
I prefer the SGS2 over the Skyrocket.
Also, I don't forsee CM or MIUI to EVER be on the skyrocket, since it's not an international phone. Very small userbase.

The number of pixels is the same, though the SR's screen is bigger so the resolution is worse. It is not nearly as hackable, because the only similar device is T-Mobile's GS2. The international GS2 is similar to AT&T's GS2 so there will always be much more hacking going on with it than the SR.

Your backwards.. skyrocket has the 1.5GHz, and the original GSII has the exynos. I coulda traded mine in- but from what I gathered the Exynos is a better chipset or whatever. And with no resolution difference, the bigger screen on the skyrocket may be downfall. Still great screen and picture- but not as nice as the 4.3" on the GSII.

Wrong....
-If you want worse battery life, go with the ****rocket (LTE radio drains battery)
-If you want to get thottled after 2gbs of data, go with the ****rocket
-If you want a worse looking display (Bigger screen, less ppi), go with the ****rocket
-If you want a clumsy and laggy interface with slow performance (1.5ghz ****dragon falls short of the Exynos), then go with the ****rocket
-If you want a heavier phone, with little accessories, go with the ****rocket
-If you want 0 custom ROMs and kernels, go with the ****rocket

After reading and searching for answers, I still cannot confirm that the Skyrocket could be SIM unlocked. I travel overseas and having an unlocked phone is a must.
Some reported that paying service would unlock the Skyrocket but equal among of folks said even paying services do not work.
GS2 could be easily SIM unlocked.
After two months of research I went with the Galaxy S2, but one week later the Skyrocket was released and my Galaxy S2 was returned. The screen on the Skyrocket is not as sharp compared to the Galaxy S2. Battery life on the Skyrocket was good, but I don't live in a LTE market so it may be less if you do. The reason I returned the Skyrocket was the processor. While I tried different apps the SR would lag, and while on the browser I would get the checker board when scrolling around. Initially in the store I could not see a major difference but a week later the SR went back. I'm upset I had lost out on the restock fee, but I'm happy I have my Galaxy S2 back. The Galaxy is the one to get IMHO.

The original gs2 is superior minus the lte support. A 1.2 ghz exynos consistently outperforms a 1.5 snapdragon with very few exceptions. Also, I prefer the smaller screen. Seems like a minor thing, but I think it looks slightly more crisp and 4.3 fits my hands better, which are pretty big.
The only reason I would say to get the skyrocket is if you need lte support, but otherwise stick with the real gs2.

But if you don't want any of those things, buy:
-Samsung Galaxy SII
-AT&T Samsung Galaxy SII
-Samsung Galaxy Note
*All of the above are much much faster and smoother than a ****rocket

This post made me lol.
Must be the 13 year old in me.
If you don't care about performance or roms then buy any phone none really compare to the gsII.....I have both and I can't stand the skyrocket

The Skyrocket is a nice piece of hardware, but do you even have LTE where you live or is your city slated to get it in the next 12 months or so? Do you travel alot? Why are you worried about "higher end?" Is the phone for your enjoyment and use or to impress everyone else on the street?

Skyrocketeer
The rom development for the skyrocket was slow but they are available. I actually have the skyrocket and am quite happy with it. I had the gsII and exchanged it, but checked for any available roms for the skrocket because i was gonna try and get the gsII back and found a rom called skyrocketeer. I rooted and installed this rom which is void of all the at&t extra crap, and it's a beast now. there was a choppyness with the video playback of xvid files which is now gone and it simply runs faster. I installed antutu benchmark and it now ranks above the gsII only third to the asus transformer and galaxy nexus. Simply put the choice is your's as to which you prefer. screen may not be as sharp but it looks pretty damn good to me on video playback this may be because of extra settings on the gsII player to regulate the color which im sure one developer will add on then there wouldnt be much of a difference but the screen size

Thanks for your nice informative post. I have the GS2, in the 30 day window, and leaning toward Skyrocket, mainly for larger screen. Nice to hear there are improvements available for it, such as the ROM you mentioned.
No LTE in my area yet. Seems Skyrocket also gets better speed on HSPA too. And seems you can change APN's as a sort of work around to turn off LTE if you wish.
Still learning a lot thanks to nice posts like this one!
Thanks again!

Skyrocket is the bastardized version of the GS2s.
Just looking for any ex infuse owners that went to the sgs2 to give me they're opinions.

My experience with the Infuse in web browsers was very sluggish and choppy as well as home screens that use live wallpapers. I don't do much gaming on my android so can't say how that is. It's been some time so I'm not sure if this is accurate, but the battery life didn't seem nearly as good as my GS2 running Unnamed or SHOstock.
Edit: As I no longer have the phone (returned it within a month and went back to my 3gs to hold off until I got this) I cannot say if it still performs like this. I did root, flash, etc, so it wasn't just a stock experience.

Is your sgs2 oc or UV at all. What battery do u get. I'm 1.2 with custom rom and some uving and I get almost 2 days battery on good days otherwise a day easy.

I'm running SHOstock with Entropy's 12/08 DD, stock battery, not sure about the clocks but I believe they're stock as well. Normally access to a charger is readily available, so I don't bother conserving it as much as some others do (I leave my screen on for 20 minutes before I notice it and turn it off). Because of this, I generally get a day and a half out of it on average.
I can easily go 2 days without a charge if need be, I'd just turn the screen timeout back on to around 2 minutes or so. A while back before tweaking I barely squeezed 2d8h out of it, but now I'd be comfortable going 3 days if I really had to.
Edit: I also keep my bluetooth on, GPS on, and wifi off, data connection stays on and I generally get 2 to 3 bars out here. I have two Google accounts syncing everything except for Picasa. I also use Llama that does cell tower polling (among other things) to automatically change profiles (primarily for volume changes).
There are lots of ex-Infuse owners here. In fact, quite a few developers here are ex-Infuse.
gtg465x was on the Infuse and came here, MikeyMike01 came here for a while but then sold off all of his newer devices and went with an old Focus, I'm here.
From a developer's point of view, the GSII blows the Infuse out of the water. From a users' point of view, the difference isn't as obvious, other than that we have proper Gingerbread and the Infuse is still stuck with half-baked derivatives of the Rogers release. (AT&T leaks have improved things somewhat - but still stuff like MHL support is missing.)
Oh yeah - GPS on the GSII is a MASSIVE improvement compared to Infuse.
Given a choice between Infuse and GS2 both with contract subsidy - GS2 is a no-brainer. If it's a question of upgrading by paying full off-contract price - not so sure if it's worth it at this point. Better to wait for something else (International GS3 maybe?) or get a GNex.

Thx entropy I know alot of u ex infuse devs are over here now. Alot to think about. My infuse has good bat life. GPS locks kinda slow but is fine for me when connected. And speed wise my single core is just as snappy as dual I would bet. But that's just my opinion as a user and I value your input as a dev.
Thanks

Screen was bigger however quality is better on the SGS2. SGS2 is way faster, GPS is also a lot better (locks faster).
Camera I think is also better.
There is no question SGS2 is THE PHONE

For me, even if not for the improvements in development and ability to leverage the I9100 community for development - the GPS was a MAJOR factor in deciding to keep the device and ditch the Infuse. (I was on the fence and was considering returning it after a month since it was such an expenditure.)
The Infuse GPS was OK, but not good enough for me to trust it - I would NEVER have relied on it for navigation in any tough environment such as a city or even an area with good signal but densely packed roads. The I777's GPS is good enough to replace all of my standalone GPS units except for the ones I use while hiking. (In fact, my parents now have my old trusty "Dealextreme Pirate Special" GPS.)

Nice write up. Decided for the sgs2 for my gf. Trading her iPhone 4(finally got her on the android wagon) . Kinda sad her first android is on paper a Beter phone than mine but I know my infuse will still hold it's own. I just wanted her to have something that's gonna have more value in the end like her iPhone which retains value. Unlike the infuse which value is only going down fast!
Thanks guys

I have 2 of each, and besides the video playback being slightly smoother on the sgs2 I can't tell the difference. The infuse has CM7 as does the sgs2 which are both still KANGed. Maybe I can give a good comparison when they join the nightly...
Does anyone think the AT&T Version of the Samsung Galaxy Note will have identical Screen Issues like the International Version of the Samsung Galaxy Note?
Who cares!! The brilliant thing is we will all have warranty so we dont need to worry. The reason i sold my n7000 is because i was paranoid about that happening and i wanted lte
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
The nice thing about the AT&T version is that they're a lot easier to exchange. I would also imagine that they have ironed out the few bugs with the screen now that it's had it's trial run internationally. AT&T has a lengthy process to approve these new devices.

Um...
Actually when the S2 was released in the US on T-Mobile there was an influx of complaints regarding the display. I don't know if our US Carriers will matter much in respect to this.
A FEW QUESTIONS,
IF I BOUGHT A GALAXY NOTE UNLOCKED AT&T VERSION FOR FULL PRICE (WHEN AVAILABLE) CONTRACT-FREE, WITHOUT BEING AN AT&T CUSTOMER, WILL I GET THE SAME KIND OF GENEROUS WARRANTY LIKE THOSE WHO BUY IT FOR $299 WITH A 2-YEAR CONTRACT?
HOW LONG WOULD THE WARRANTY BE?
AND DO I NEED TO DEAL WITH SAMSUNG DIRECTLY OR AT&T (EVEN IF I AM NOT AN AT&T CUSTOMER)?
KINDA STINKS THAT EXYNOS IS NOT ON THE AT&T-VARIANT. ARE THERE ANY DOWNSIDES TO THE SNAPDRAGON? BENCHMARKS?
YeA its mainly benchmarks imo i had the skyrocket then i sold it for the n7000 and i can tell yoj forst hand the skyrixket was a way way faster device. As for your other question i would say to be safe tell someone you know to call in and add your note to there at&t acount for your warranty. So buy outright and call it in and just say you wanna add the device on they will ask you for your imei and thats it your good

I'm thinking about the AT&T version too, thanks!
However, I did read some where someone's Skyrocket managed to catch on fire while on board a flight. That's the only thing which worries me.

But remember the Galaxy Note screen has 1280 x 800 resolution and the Skyrocket has 800 x 480. That is almost 3 times the pixels to process so not directly comparable. When I first got my Galaxy Note, I agree the skyrocket was faster in the screen transitions etc but after two more updates that is not the case any longer. I have the LA4 update which sped up the phone significantly. While I agree that benchmarks do not tell the entire story, the Galaxy Note routinely has among the highest benchmarks for any phone.
Based on the several videos I saw from CES on the ATT version, I think it will be fine since it will be optimized with a newer version of firmware before we get it

The note is not using the same exact s3 chip as the skyrocket. I was somewhat surprised to see antutu results for the att note were better than the stock skyrocket results. If that says anything, the note will be lightning fast after some roms and a nice kernel pop up

Agreed. I was not comparing the skyrocket to the Note. I have seen one Antutu score on the ATT version so I think we need several more runs to get a good feel for where it will be. That said, I was impressed with 6000 as a score and am looking forward to getting one. Like you said that puts it up there sightly above the skyrocket and SGSII which are both very capable phones.

Thanks for asking btw, heehee.

Once there is ics on this thing, itll be flying even faster! Hopefully the screen issues are fixed, because i also want the best smartphone screen lol. Just hope ics comes soon, the theming makes everything look so much better. Also, hopefully cm7/9 can be built, make life so much better ha. Esp screen wise too! Rise that dpi and tab mode you go.
