[Q] Need help Choosing software for Android - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I will soon be an Android convert even thought i have never owned a smart phone. I have used PDA's since my first Dell Axim. I stuck with the Windows Mobile 2003 platform until the third gen ipod touch came out. I switched to the 3rd gen touch and used it till it died; then i got my trusty 4th Gen ipod touch.
Now i am ready to move on to one device, phone and PDA in one. The natural choice seems to be iphone 5 since i am familiar with ipods (even though i am no real fan of apple).
The thing is, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is beautiful! The screen is huge and widgets are "cool." I really want to go Android.
This leads to my problem. Finding adequate software. I have broken down my needs in categories below. PLEASE, if anyone knows of a good software, paid or free, that will do what i want, please suggest it to me.
For starters, CALENDARS.
I have used Pocket Informant for the ipod for awhile. (Used it on the Win mobile before that) I love it. Played with the Android version on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and i gotta say, it needs work. A lot of work.
The calendar that comes with the tab is nice too, and so is jorte, but my biggest problem (and it seems like a small one) is that I like to look at the month view and see the times listed in the mirco text before the appointment. otherwise i have to open each appointment or change views to see the start times.
Attached pictures show exactly what i am talking about. Both are screen shots of the current version of Pocket Informant. Notice the start times on the iOS version. Also notice how the android version (the second one) looks "undone."

"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
How can I, in good conscience go from the above.... to this.....
even on the samsung galaxy's beautiful screen that is shameful.
My Main criteria for a new calendar program is a month view as close to the first image as possible. Specifically i really like how in month mode you can see the start times of appointments in the Apple version. I have tried several different calendar programs and have yet to find an Android one that does this. What happened to Android being all about choice? Why does every single calendar app appear to just be different fonts on the same engine?
The next point of contention is Video playback
My main criteria for a playback app is that it shows the time remaining on the progress bar.
What i mean is that, on the ipod, youtube, and just about EVERYWHERE, the progress bar (scrubber) shows the current time to the right of the slider, and time remaining on the left. I like this.
On EVERY Android video player i have tried it shows the current time on the right, but the left is stuck at the total time. It does not move. It does not count down how much time is left.
Again, it feels like every app is using the same engine, with different "window dressing."
Is there an app out there that can handle the time left? Please let me know.
My secondary Criteria for a playback app is i would like it to be able to handle embedded thumbnail tags in mp4 files. This seems like a no-brainer. iTunes does it. iPods do it. But i have yet to find a single Android app that will correctly display the embedded image. They, instead, choose to display a random screenshot for the thumbnail. Where is the variety that an open system should bring?
In a perfect world, the Android app would also sort the shows into groups based on the show name and season, for properly tagged files. Ipod touch does it. Seems simple enough, yet again, i cannot find a program that can do this.
Next up, Syncing.
I think i have this one covered. I really like itunes. And before you say "bloatware" let me just say that the UI on winamp sucks. iTunes is beautiful, easy to navigate, sort, and manipulate my mp3 files. The Closest i have found is Media Monkey. But to tell you the truth, i am not sure i am ready to give up itunes yet. I love my playcounts dating back to 2006. So, i have been using iSyncer and it seems to do the trick. When set up properly it syncs and even syncs playcounts back to iTunes. I hear DoubleTwist will let you sync your Android device to iTunes also; but iSyncer seems to be a more elegant solution.
Audio Playback
Again, as with videos none of the audio apps that i have found show how much time is left in a song on the right hand side of the scrubber. This is an epidemic!
Also, I have mp3 files that are audio books and Howard Stern Shows. I cannot listen to these in one session, and switch back and forth with music. In itunes/iPod-land i would simply use "get info - Options - Media Kind" to switch these mp3 files to audio books or podcasts and check mark the box allowing it to remember position. This one is important. I really need help finding an audio player that allows this. Allowing me to save my position in "Howard", for example, listen to some music, then go back to where i left off in the Radio Show.
This Leads to Podcasts. Video and Audio.
I listen to quite a few podcasts. I could sync them over from iTunes using iSyncer, but it throws them in the same folder as my music making them hard to find. This is very messy. I hope a later version of iSyncer takes care of this. Until then, I would probably use an app to download them directly to the S3. I just downloaded a program called Podcast Addict. This may do the trick, but it is, again, inelegant and seems undone. Can someone point me in the direction of a GREAT podcast catcher app?
Is this all too much to ask of Android apps or am I just looking in the wrong places. If that is the case, please let me know, and i will check out whatever app fits the criteria outlined above. When i started looking, these seemed like minor things. Especially on a system that is all about being open; for the sake of choice. This seems to be a theme when people talk about why Android is so much better than iOS.
Sorry to sound like i am ranting.. maybe i am ranting... but i really want this to work. But i cant compromise on the user experience just to have a bigger screen. I need software that is up to the task, and i can't seem to find it on my own. Any input you can give will be greatly appreciated.
thanks for listening!
~mike

Hi,
Feel free to tell me what's not working for you in Podcast Addict. FYI a new major release it's on its way with a new UI

Yes i agree that iOS' Calendar is more polished. But i still sure you can find some really good calendar app on the Google Play. Not sure if it going to be free (to be that polished like iOS' one).

No offense, but that is exactly the problem. Everyone i speak to locally, and also on the net, always say the same thing. "there are great ones on google play." But they aren't using good ones, nor do they tell me any good ones that could even come close to the polished look of PI for iOS and no one has suggested one that shows the times in the month view. Those are the two main selling points for me.
but thanks for responding.

Nothing is wrong with Podcast Addict, per se. But, what i am looking for would be a podcasting program that allowed me to add mp3 files as podcasts. Also, i was having trouble navigating. I would find myself trapped in a menu with no way to get back. (this was a couple of weeks ago. I will try to do it again, so i can give you a step by step example; so that the above statement makes more sence)
But overall, i like podcast addict. I am sticking with it. I just wish i could add my howard stern mp3's there manually so they show up as podcasts. Like i do in itunes.

Check those:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mikado.bizcalpro
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.greenbeansoft.CheckmarkCalendar
I would suggest you pick one which looks for you better and install it to check how it is in action.
P.S.: personally i use very simply stuff like https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gau.go.launcherex.gowidget.calendarwidget

Going to download the free one first.. .then check out the other two. the first 2 don't appear to show times in the main month window. But this might be something that is in settings. They all look very nice, "polished."
thank you for responding.

You have a podcast without any feeds ?
I was thinking about allowing to play external audio files with the app with the resume feature. They might not looks like a usual podcast, but will appears in the playlist

Yes. I download it as an mp3 file. And in itunes tag it as a podcast. Then it shows up as a regular podcast would on the ipod. Haven't found an android equivalent yet.
The feature you are considering sounds like what i am looking for. Count me as one vote for that new feature

i don't think we are allowed to talk about that here. people get kicked out for such discussions on most boards.

Why ???
A RSS feed is the only or at least the common way to subscribe to a podcast. You won't be kicked talking about that.

why can't you just accept that it is a 3 hour long mp3 file that i want to listen to in sections?

Of course you do what ever you want. I'm just trying to understand in which case you might need to do that. It's so simple to subscribe to a feed, enable auto-refresh/auto-download/auto-queue then just press play. Maybe you didn't find a non-itunes feed. In that case if you tell me the name of the podcast I can try to find it

Nice! Too bad I have Media Center 2005 or I would love this.
i will try it
i cant get the wmcontroller app to work in WIndows 7 RC'
does anyone knows what to do
I tried to get this potentially great software to work with Vista Premium incl. TV Pack but whenever I start VMC I get an error message 'can't load...' :-(
Any help is most welcome.
what are the limitations of this software, evorgevol?
specifically the following 4:
- what type of connection(s) does it use to connect to VMC/w7MC (wifi only, or bt optional)?
- is it intelligent enough to work with VMC plugin's? (my movies, MCEweather, daemon tools etc)
- is this a complete replacement for an MCE remote - ie, could i remove the IR-transmitter/reciever?
- is it intelligent enough to realise what menu it is in, and filter out un-used options (ie: 'channel change' and 'record' would be removed if in pictures/dvd area)?

It connects over TCP/IP, so it would have to be connected to your local area network.
This is only really a simple program that interacts with the VmcContoller application, so can only do reasonably basic stuff. I have added functionality to so that it can use the MyMovies application metadata, though most of this is still in progress.
It depends on what you use your remote for as to whether this can be a complete replacement. I currently dont have, and have no intentions in the near future of, having a number/keyboard pad. So if you use these a lot, then it probably won't be a full replacement.
I had planned to make the now playing screen a bit more wise about what type of media is playing, and display different icons accordingly, but this has been marked as more a of a 'nice to have' in the application which i might work on in the future, but have other things I'd rather get working first.
Hope that answers some of your queries...
evorgevol
indeed they all are 'nice-ities', and it wont stop me considering playing with your app.
thanks for answers
Unfortunately, the media center network controller software can not be installed on a Vista X64 pc. I would really like to use this app on my mobile device!

Man this is absolutely awesome!!!
I don't have a MS MediaCenter solution but MythTV, so I wanted to do the same app like you did but for MythTV quite a while.... I already gave up in searching a usable GUI framework like your Fluidity and started writing my own (Which took basically up all my time so far - that's why there is not even an app yet ... But your solution kicks the living sh**t out my little approach.
Is it ok if I borrow up the framework and perhaps some junks of code from your app??? I don't think I'd get it done better if I would try myself, so it would be nice if I wouldn't have to reinvent the wheel. I will of course list you in the credits page of the app.
I spend some hours browsing through your code and I think I got almost through in understanding how the controls basically work. The only thing I miss is the complete overview of how the binding to the actual data is done. The idea with the Templates for the single Items is pretty neat and makes it extremly flexible!

Thanks for reminding me... I forgot to give the original author credit!!! The control framework I use on TouchRC is called Fluid controls, and it's on codeplex here.
I will update my codeplex to give him the credit he deserves, I certainly wouldnt have been able to do any of my app without it!!
Just for thought though, if you create a TCP/IP server for your app, and use the same receive commands as VmcController, then you should just be able to use my app entirely! Or, if you do make it different, and you want me to, I can add your commands to my app too, so that the user would be able to control both windows and myth from the same application!
Thanks,

Can you load up the http server for vmc? (ie, on a diff computer, go to http://hostpc:40510) and see if that works? if it doesn't, then it probably means that VmcController isn't working properly. If this is the case, then revert to the codeplex site of VmcController to ask for help.
Thanks,

Thanks a lot for the offer, but I plan to build a 'richer' remote client for MythTV. Means, besides a remote control function I want to be able to browse the Program Guide, Recordings, Movies, Music, Pictures on the phone and select them to play on the PC/TV.
And I have some other ideas which would be pretty neat, but for now I am already happy if I get the above items finished. (technically thats usually no prob, but once you solved all the tiny little problems and know how to code the whole thing it often gets boring )

I've been stupidly busy recently, so haven't had any chance to work on it for a while. I'm hoping that will change next month. I have made some minor updates to it (but not checked it in), but won't be making another release for a couple of weeks yet. Hopefully soon though!!! How's yours coming along?

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Can I download songs to my phone?
A. No. This is not something Grooveshark allows you to do, and it won't be something Groovefish will allow you to do. It would constitute piracy after all.
Q. How can I help?
A. At the moment, I want a good solid base on which to build up the rest of the features. If you encounter a problem whilst using Groovefish, please post the details - including how to reproduce it if possible - in this topic. If the problem is non-fatal (i.e. the application doesn't crash) then please check the Debug Log (Options > View Debug Log) and post any relevant information from there.
You can also help by using the Grooveshark service. I'm not sure how they will react to this app, but I'd like to think they can coexist symbiotically since I'm promoting their service. You can support the host of the download by visiting the 1800PocketPC.com website who are kindly hosting and promoting the app for me.
Finally, of course you can DONATE to help encourage further development, more features, etc.

The first release has been uploaded to the second post! I've tested this on my Xperia and it seems to be relatively stable. That said, I've not done much testing!
The user interface is admitted not very good. I've not spent much time on it, I was more focused on getting a moderately stable first release out there to see how it runs on different devices and at different resolutions.
Next up, I'm going to start designing the 'proper' interface and start adding some basic features that are missing. I have big plans for this!
Hope you like! All feedback welcome.
Seems stable enough for me at the moment. I'm testing on a Ipaq hx2795 qvga. I did have it crash when it tried to get the album art. Keep up the good work!

Actually, as it turns out the 'rare' crash would -always- happen when there was no artwork for a song. This was due to me writing a clever bit of code with loaded the default artwork from the installation directory rather than downloading it. As it turns out, this clever bit of code didn't work since it used an unsupported .NET method. Opps!
I've taken this out for now, so it should work for all songs apart from the odd network-related crash! See post 2 for an updated CAB.
looking good, i like ur UI more than nilson, more finger friendly...
looking good so far.....thanks
looking great as of 2a, works w/o issue on the Touch Pro (CDMA).
I can't wait to see where this goes...
I'd like to hear some more feedback from others if possible! Any crashes, freezes, etc. I seem to be using a pretty unstable 6.5 ROM at the moment so I don't know whether to attribute the (few) UI freezes to the ROM or to my application. I suspect the former, but it'd be nice to get some form of confirmation.
'Version 1' is coming along nicely by the way - I've write ALL of the UI from scratch and I'm about to rewrite the comms with more speed and greater stability in mind. I'll try to get another release out this week - and it should prove to be a huge improvement...
Fingers crossed!
hehe, no one complaining = app is working fine, right?
Anyways here's my feedback - tested on Touch HD with PDAViet's V63 WM6.5 build 23053.
Issues/bugs
* Playback stops (eventually) when screen is turned off, and resumes only when screen is on again. Already checked that the I wasn't in suspend mode, and used Power Options to perform the screen off. Doesn't matter if using headphones or external speaker, same results.
Suggestions
* Ability to add songs to a playlist, and play only songs in the playlist (like the main Grooveshark website)
Other than that, everything works as expected (with one song anyways ) Will test more....
Look forward to V1!

Just to clarify, the issue occurs *after* I switched off S2U2 completely before using Groovefish, because I know the "Don't Suspend Power" setting is Off by default and even when switch On, still seems to stop HSDPA connections sometimes.
Ok, did a little more testing, found some more issues:
* After pressing play in a song, pressing the back button seems to wipe the search results list
* Buffering seems to fail for certain songs, eg. "Bee Gees" => Staying Alive - I get a .NET CF error, but can't see specific details because I don't have the mesages module installed.
Wow, I'm really excited. Now we have two guys that are both working on a great Grooveshark client. Wonderful.
Downloading now, if I find something useful to tell you about your current version, I will give you feedback asap.
PS
I think that the name of your app is brilliant!
EDIT: Ok so here are my thoughts....
One Major gripe that I have is that whenever the backlight turns off, so does the music. The same thing happens with Gooveshark Mobile.
other things:
1. when you search and then go back, it does not show the previous search results. I'm sure you were already planning to address this in the near future though.
2. There is nothing wrong with the user interface, it works great. Search is front and center.
But a reccomendation for the future that I have is to incorporate a carousel (kinda like TF3D) so that there are the following tabs: "Search" "My Music" "Recent" "Popular" "Favorites" and "People". Since those are the main menu items on listen.gooveshark.com, those screens would make most sense.
3. Obviously it would be amazing to be able to log into your account through the application. I'm sure this is already coming in the future too.
Lastly, if anyone is having problems with the application not being able to play a stream, it is Gooveshark.com's fault right now and not Sharkfish's

^^ My only gripe right now.
Also, when searching for music we should be presented with Artist/Title alone. No need to do more than Grooveshark does Then only present the rest of the information (Album/Art/Length/Genre) when the music is playing. I'm not going to decide what to listen to based on song length
With a UI as finger-friendly and attractive as nilezon's this could be fantastic!
P.S. Tested & working on Asus P565 VGA 480x640 over HSDPA
Yay! Comments!
A few responses;
I'm not sure if it's possible to keep the music playing after the screen has turned off - if there is some magical way of doing so, I'd love to know - it's certainly not something I'm doing intentionally! I can just stop the screen from turning itself off, so there is a potential fix there - just not an ideal one.
The song info page (with the genre, duration, artwork, etc) will be an optional step in-between the search results and the player. My aim is to have all major functions of the application to be one (or, at the most two) taps away (probably using something similar to skyler17's carousel idea).
The search result page will eventually show song and artist name - I went with the plain ol' ListView control for the search result just to have something done quickly, and with kinetic scrolling.
As for the stream crashing the application - the only situation I've had this is where the stream is actually missing. You can test this by doing the same search on Grooveshark and seeing if the error message pops up. I haven't yet accounted for missing streams so if it's missing - it'll crash!
Oh, and... I made an application icon this morning!
very excited for the next release, keep it up!!
It's good to hear there is still some interest... I'm still putting a lot of hours into this project, so it's nice to hear there is still some enthusiasm for it!
There should be another release some time this week, hopefully. I'll post some screenshots if I get a chance - the UI is looking very pretty now!

Oh yeah! Can't wait
The screen switching off/audio problem is by-design in WinMo. The only player to actually get around it is WMP and I have no idea how. Nitrogen keeps the screen on "dimmed" mode while the music is playing to get around it.
The only problems I've encountered in this release is the random Exceptions being thrown when trying to play certain tracks. Doesn't always happen though & usually closing/opening the app solves it.

http://www.ppcgp.info
I just purchased the app for $5.00.
So far this is what I have experienced.
-Sound quality much better and louder than the freeware groovefish app
-Very user friendly
-Doesn't lock up or freeze
-Can add as many songs as you want and queue them up as you please
-Album art on most songs is nice to have
-Can hit the power button to turn the phone off and music continues *HUGE PLUS*
-Very finger friendly -finger scroll up or down- i had problems with the freeware app picking songs as I tried to scroll or struggling to scroll in general
-All songs play - freeware app 70% of the songs didn't play and would remain on "requesting stream"
WHAT its MISSING
-Saved song playlist - an app that cost money should have this small feature or at least a recent search *10 previous songs played*
-When you are listening to a song and a call comes through, the song should be paused and restored if the call is ignored or when you are done with the call *you have to open the app and click play in the player currently*
-Navigation pad should be compatible with the scroll list so you don't have to use your fingers if you don't want to
If I find out anything else I will let you guys know.
IMO, its worth the 5 bucks especially if the developer keeps making improvements..just hope for an auto update function when that happens.
it doesnt work on my HD2
Am sorry to say that this program doesn't even initialize on my hd2 using wifi and gprs both connections.
I wrote an email to assistance about this, and hope they reply soon
tested and bought.
i tried the free trial (you can open the trial version as many times as you want- it will only run for 5 minutes). I decided for $5 (i spend that much at starbucks wo even thinking twice) i might as well give it a shot.
I am very pleased with the results (but i am not real particular).
1. you can navigate to any song or artist and build a playlist that will play automatically (you don't have to pick one song at a time, listen, search for a new one, over and over etc.)
2. nice professional interface.
3. Playlists- ok- i hate to argue with the reviewers and mrhankey but this is my experience with the playlist.
a. i do not pay for a VIP membership at grooveshark.
b. i cannot create a playlist on the mobile client (nanogroove) but i can access the playlists i have created on my free subscription to grooveshark. I don't know if i am supposed to be able to or if it is just a fluke- i just know that i can bc i double checked before posting here.
so i think it is pretty cool.

no need to be sorry. the function works for me. like i said- not sure if it is supposed to, but it does for now.
I may well be -very- biased in saying this, but charging for the use of someone else's free service seems extremely inappropriate to me. I thought I was skimming the edge of legality with Groovefish given that it doesn't even attempt to support Grooveshark's advertising, but this may be a step too far.
That said, it's no skin off my nose either way! The app seems quite easy to use, and I'll certainly keep an eye on it's development. I certainly won't be paying for it though.

good point, its just a content deliver system. Though there are some services that do this already (twitter apps, Facebook apps, IMing software etc.)

Nonetheless... Indeed it is somehow weird to charge for the use of a third person's free service

If the app works correctly, and makes it easier on us *the user* the fee asked for is small. For 5 bucks you can buy a big mac combo from Mcdonalds.. or for 5 bucks you get all the features that actually work in the groovefish application.
I have seen what freeware can get you, and now you can see what an inexpensive music apps gets you. Well worth the $

I tried evernote long ago but didn't find it much use since there was no winmo app. Any tips or tricks?

There are 3 votes for autosync so far, which does not quite bring it to the top of my to-do pile, but you can help to change that.

Evernote has a WinMo app, but it is pretty bare-bones and has not been supported for a long time.

I'm not sure what you mean by sending notes through bluetooth. Would you elaborate?
Adding more colour schemes is unlikely. The app currently includes two versions of the interface, one for high-resolution displays and one for the low. With more variants of each, it could quickly become unmaintainable. I can't change the background colour programmatically either, because it is baked into the graphics. They are all dithered for 16-bit colour, and dithering is incompatible with transparency.

It's simply you can send the notes you have to another device, say to another phone or pc, using bluetooth.

The thing I wonder about is what to do with the note on the receiving end. Official Evernote clients cannot properly transfer notes outside of synchronization. Exporting to HTML is possible, but would raise the question of what to do with file attachments.
Of course, if you can connect to internet through Bluetooth, then you can simply sync.

Perfect timing: I just started trying out Evernote this week and wasn't really keen on Evernote's own application because it's useless offline. And here comes your app and looks great.
I got one problem, though: It refuses to connect via wifi. No problem at all via 3G, but on WiFi it steadily shows "connecting".
Oh, and being able to create new tags would be a good addition.

Thanks for complimenting the app. I have not used WiFi in a while, but will try to reproduce your problem.
Started a new work item for tag creation: http://peoplesnote.codeplex.com/workitem/1005.
Voting on feature requests gets them implemented sooner.
Since restarting my phone a few times, the app doesn't hang up while trying to connect via WiFi anymore - it just takes way longer than via 3G for some reason, but it's usable.
Edit: Forget about the described problem. I'm sure it was a generally lagging WiFi connectivity that day. It works like a charm in other WiFi networks and now at the same one, too.
I apologize for taking so long to release a new version — just did not have much time to spare. Version 0.38 implements one of the most-requested features, letting you choose "All Notebooks" to browse, search, and sync all your notebooks together.

Great App!
Great App! Working on my old Axim X51V!
I see on your website that you have Notes popping up with a timed alarm reminder as low priority. Let me put in a vote for higher priority.
I would use it as a timed "sticky note" to myself to do something.
Keep up the good work!
Just released version 0.39, making it possible to delete notes from the main note list screen via a tap-and-hold menu.
http://peoplesnote.codeplex.com/releases/view/84127
Version 0.40 adds an option to compact the database from the profile screen. Compacting a database can make it smaller and faster by removing empty spaces left over by editing, moving, and deleting notes.
http://peoplesnote.codeplex.com/releases/view/84688
cant log in
It must be just me; since nobody else has mentionned it; but I cannot log in to evernote at all on my HD2. On 3G it immediately comes back with network error (never even tries to open a data connection). On wifi it seems to be trying to do something in the background but after a few minutes to just goes back to the login screen.
Any ideas??

It sounds like the WiFi connection is slow and times out. With 3G, try to establish a data connection first, such as by opening a web browser. I just created a work item for this: workitem:1055.

This program is making all the right steps in all the right directions, it has great prospects.
There are some features that Evernote has that I hope would arrive in this software in the not-too-distant future. I make more handwritten notes that any other form of note taking, and what I find with 'PeoplesNote' is that the 'Ink Note' feature is just a one page scribble pad without any option to scroll or add a page. It would be fantastic if the Ink Note feature of PeoplesNote could automatically scroll as the old Windows Note does as you approach the bottom of the page. Evernote's Ink Note recognises that you are reaching the bottom of the page and facilitates extra space to scroll into. Additionally, it would be very helpful to have an erase feature with Ink Note.
Please don't take this as criticism, I can see this app being extremely useful for as long as Evernote allow you to develop it.

Windows 11 announced! Here are the best 3 features

Today we finally got to take a look at the official Windows 11 event, after months of leaks and rumors. During the live event, we got to see many different new Windows 11 features. If you didn't get to watch the event live, you can watch the entire thing here. Many different changes are coming related to gaming, productivity, communication, and more. I took three of the best new announcements and summarized them below.
New Start MenuWindows has a redesigned start Menu, which brings everything to the center of the bottom of your display. things look different once you open the start menu, with a grid of app icons below the search bar, and recommended files on the lower half. This is looking a lot more like an app drawer that you'd find on a phone or tablet. This new design has much more of a tablet feel to it, which will translate nicely to people with Microsoft Surface tablets.

}
You'll notice the new glassy look is applied throughout the system. It's not a radical change from Windows 10, but it does offer a cleaner and simpler look to the start menu.
Snap LayoutsBack when Windows 7 launched, Microsoft integrated Windows Snap. This is the feature that lets you drag a window to the edge of your display, and have it snap in place. It has been a favorite feature ever since, and it's now going to be a lot better. Windows 11 is expanding on this feature in several ways. With Snap Layouts, you will be able to see several options on how you want your window to snap. The screenshot below shows how you can divide your screen in six different ways.
One of the biggest problems with snap, on Windows 10 and earlier- is if you get distracted and have to pull up a new screen, and start a new task, your snap setup kind of gets ruined. Now this will not be the case. You can pull up a new window, send an email, then resume whatever layout you were working with.
This ability to remember the layout of your windows also applies to external monitors. If you are using a monitor to hold a specific snap layout, you can unplug that monitor and Windows will still remember the layout when you plug it back in.
Android AppsOne of the most exciting bits of news from the live stream is, Windows 11 will be able to run Android apps. This means that you can now watch TikTok, use Snapchat, or play your favorite mobile games right on your Windows PC. This could end up getting rid of the need for emulators from this point on. This is a huge step in bridging the gap between Android and Windows developers. It also means that you can have fewer devices. If you have a Windows tablet, you might find that you're able to skip on having an Android Tablet or iPad.
Users will be able to download Android apps right from the Microsoft Store, using their Microsoft account. Instead of accessing the Google Play store, Microsoft is integrating the Amazon appstore into the Microsoft Store. I'm sure people will find ways to sideload apks into this system, but we will have to wait and see.
It's really nice. I'll just say this: if Microsoft brought back Windows Phone with Windows 11 design, it would be the nicest mobile operating system by far.

Their one problem for the android emulator that would be like pre-installed on windows can u enable root for that android emulator it would definitely look a lot better if u can run rooted apps on that android emulator but it's still amazing even without root it will just look better with root because I can use apps like ad away uninstall pre-installed apps and turn apps into pre-installed apps

Very true but I don't think windows phone will ever come back because android and iOS both killed of windows phone for reason reason for that is because ever since android and iOS came out windows phone just decreased a lot and became a lot less popular over years which is probably why they killed it off back in 2017
Meh... how much ram does it use?
A fully loaded XPx64 (less antivirus) used a mere 576mb.
MS has been a solid fail since W7
Cant wait to try it!!
I would have been happier if MS announced that they brought back W7.
"We heard you, you all love W7, so we added support for modern hardware and software, then we left it the hell alone. No more deciding should I use Settings or Control Panel? Why is the MS Word ribbon in explorer? How much garbage can they squeeze in the start menu? We heard you and we call it 7.11 it's got everything you need. Minus the stupid windows snaps blazing across your monitors, seriously who needs that?"

We'll find out all of that when Microsoft releases a preview with Android app support. It's just guessing now.
I think the bigger question is if Android apps will actually be valuable. I don't know that anyone was finding Windows lacking in any meaningful way.

We'll find out all of that when Microsoft releases a preview with Android app support. It's just guessing now.

Well, we've seen this before on Chrome OS of course. I think most people would say even though they can run Android apps on Chrome, they seldom do since most people always have their phone on them, plus usually the chrome/web equivalents to apps are better, plus you have a mouse and kb. I like the optionality though!!

We know that the android apps on windows 11 will be running on Amazon app store so their probably only gonna be apps and games that's on Amazon app store could still give us purpose to use a android emulator on windows 11 if this is true since some games may not be on Amazon app store on windows 11

Fair point. Personally, I'm looking forward to having a decent tablet-optimized Kindle app, and now that I'm thinking about it, Comixology.
I do think that Chrome OS is a different beast though. There's no existing app ecosystem on Chrome OS. For example, there are standalone apps that I want, like Slack, Photoshop, Skype, OneNote, etc. I can do most of this through web apps, but I don't necessarily want to. But Windows has these apps for me.
