Question - Gen8, Gen9, Gen10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to have on display two applications at the same time? E.g. Chrome and google translate?

As far as I know: nope.
Only in Galaxy Note 2 is something like that.

There are some works here on XDA to port this feature to other devices... Even Samsung is going to port it to the SGS3. Just wait for now...

Isn't this a feature of android 4.2?
On my SGS3 it runs very good. Would be nice to have it on tablet.

When jellybean is available for the devices like the s3, note, and s2, this feature will be included from what Samsung has said. My note is waiting impatiently.

Guess we will just have to wait and see if a dev would like to port this over and bless us with some GN2 goodies. But its not a simple process. Its extremely time consuming and he dev would REALLY wanna take time out of their lives to do us this favor. Although, i gotta admit, im hoping to see this too.

I have a lot of patience when it comes to my GN1, and the great dev teams out there, excellent job by the way! I hope it happens before the GN2 arrives so I can save some money lol.

i don't want the note two
I really really don't want to upgrade to the note2, I hate physical home buttons( I've had very bad experiences with it) all i want is the rom and its new goodies and hope that it plays nice with the blaze radios to keep using my baby on simple mobile.
XDA is no longer worth my time.
I'm with you, i would really love to get that dual window mode on my original note. Especially since just getting the gn2 isn't really an option for me.

Not looking good for the note 1 to get note 2 goodies! Note 2?
Sent from my SGH-I717 using xda premium
Port fron GN2 to GN1 is NOT going to happen anytime soon.
Where to begin. Even if they were porting the GN2 rom to the GN1, it would be the international GN1, NOT the US version, and the US version has completely different hardware, than the international one. ALL new Samsung phones are using all new hardware compared to the US GN1. There is no way those ROM's will make it over to our i717. the hardware is just too different. Because the US GN1 has LTE, they used the Qualcomm S3 SOC, and this was US only. The rest of the world used either the newer Qualcomm S4, or the Samsung SOC. The Note 2 uses Exynos (sp?) quadcore SOC radically different than our Note 1's.
You can forget about any Note 2 ports to the Note 1. Ports have been from like hardware, to like hardware, for example the AT&T Galaxy Skyrocket has basically the same internals, as our Note 1, and there have been ports that way. The Note used pretty much the last of those SOC's.
There is always the chance that Samsung will come out with an Official JB port for our phone.
I think you are correct, updates with gnote 2 goodies are very unlikely. Time to save up for a gnote 2!

I have seen a review fire a ROM on the international note that did have multi-window working. I don't remember the specific build but iT sure looked like a nice feature.
I don't know anything about developing software for phones but why would it be hard for a Dev to add in that functionality?

Developing ROMs?

Hi, I was interested in building an ICS ROM for the galaxy player 4.2. After compiling ICS from the source, what steps do you need to take to make it into a ROM?
Sent from my YP-GI1 using xda app-developers app
I'm afraid it's not THAT simple. AFAIK, there is a lot of work to be done before a booting ICS can be achieved. If you have no prior experience in android ROM development, I don't think this is a task you should take up right now. ICS compiled from the AOSP will not work on the 4.2 without modification and an ICS kernel, both of which are far beyond my current technological skill. Also this should be in general. Yes, I know it IS development related, but this IS a development site. Questions belong in the general thread. Thanks.
Odp: Developing ROMs?
Well starting by practice is good way imo. I did so But wothout knowledge, you have to be extremely patient
Send from sg wifi5.0 with mine kernel
I understand, maybe I can look at how it was achieved on the other players and it might be similar?
Sent from my YP-GI1 using xda app-developers app
I wouldn't look at the other players, as the 4.2 is pretty different from the 4 and 5. Try finding another Samsung product with similar hardware. Example: the galaxy player 5.0 is very similar to the SGS i9000 , Nexus S (crespo), and GTab p1000.
Sent from my YP-G70 using xda app-developers app
Okay, but I'm pretty sure the 4.2 is similar to nexus s?
Sent from my YP-GI1 using xda app-developers app
Compare specs. Find out.
Sent from my YP-G70 using xda app-developers app
Odp: Developing ROMs?
by specs our devices are quite similar, by kernel etc. less but still similar.
I think that good and interesting way of learning is to add same/similar modifications as on crespo/aries and try to understand how does it accually work.
Send from sg wifi5.0 with mine kernel
Thanks for the help guys. I'm quite busy at the moment catching up with school work, I'll see what I can do this weekend.
Sent from my YP-GI1 using xda app-developers app
Hell, the 4.2 might even get an official update. Unlikely, but possible. IDK if Samsung has made a statement about this, but it only came out last year. (I think)
I called Samsung and asked about official updates and they said the 4.2 won't be getting any because the specs aren't good enough....

Thats a lie. there was a device called the Galaxy Music that had an 800 mHz processor that got JB.
Samsung wont update the galaxy players because they are much cheaper compared to phones (take the s3 for example, it costs 700-800 bucks if you get it without a contract)
I'd suggest reading through the following threads if you haven't already. Then ask about the specific parts there you're not understanding.
[GUIDE] How to port ROMs to the Galaxy Players
[Guide]Rom Development for Dummies (and a few other things)
And I found this one that describes the complete process for the aospa rom. You should be able to adapt the details for whatever rom you're working on.
[GUIDE][AOSPA:v3.+] How to Compile AOSPA from Source : + Support and Maintenance
That won't work until there is a working ICS kernel though. And even after that is completed, work will need to be done on the ROM.

Best/most supported smartphone.

Hi, I have a HTC One S. I can't complain about the phone but there aren't a lot official ROMs for this cellphone. On the new website of aokp isn't any ROM for the one s anymore, cyanogenmod has only cm10 stable and some 10.1 nightly and there is screen tearing, too. Or for example Ubuntu touch isn't avaible. Or a super nexus ROM. Or miui 5.
So my question is what is a good supported but also powerful smartphone?
Only Nexus devices get the most development support. Get a Nexus 4...
Sell it and equip yourselves with a nexus you won't start a thread like this again - for nexus something new pops up everyday
OK and any other devices? Maybe for people who are reading this thread and dont like nexus?

If you don't like nexus don't worry you will also able to use latest android resources.
But you need to search in google that how to make a own custom rom

The Galaxy S3, Galaxy S4, and Galaxy Note II all have great developer support, the US market versions of these phones have even better developer support but the International versions are great too. The Xperia Z is another phone with great developer support as well. All of these devices have official Cyanogenmod support, and AOKP support (Except for the Galaxy S4 which at this moment doesn't have official AOKP) support.

Its not simple but these days there are tutorials on compiling/debugging that makes life easier for newbies wanting to take first steps into aosp development
Bro making a rom is hard for us but not impossible.
You just need to learn how to port rom's from another device and how to modify your stock kernel to work properly in your custom rom.
Don't forget that the nexus/cm rom makers are also a human like us.
Try to search in Google.com

[REQ] Multi-Window Port

Isn't it about time someone ported Multi-Window to our phone? It is called the Galaxy S3 Mini afterall. Seeing as Multi-Window is one of the main features of practically all Samsung Galaxy Phones it makes sense for us to have it. So if there's anyone out there willing to port it, then please do.
Thanks, Kieran

I don't think it will be much use seeing that our phone's screen's resolution is comparatively low :/
but I'd be happy to see any new features developed, whatever they are
EDIT: Paranoid Android's HALO feature is IMO better than multi-window and getting that working on our phones should be even better

One benefit of HALO is that it can run ANY app

The low resolution wouldn't really matter. We've still got 233ppi which isn't exactly terrible, I know it's not amazing but it's good enough.
