Restore stock original firmware - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I looking to restore my S3 to stock so i can receive official updates
would this be the correct procedure
Use triangle away to reset flash counter
Flash a stock firmware via odin
For example
I9300XXDLJ4 Download
Base Firmware: I9300XXDLJ4 (4.1.1)
Region Europe
Country: United Kingdom
Carrier: Unbranded
Build Date: 19 October 2012
Modem: XXDLID
CSC: OXADLJ4
Change List: 368423
Would this then enable OTA updates

Why don't you try to search...

Actually if you flash with a stock firmware with odin it will receive future updates via OTA, i had this with my Nexus S phone. I don't know where you get your info from.

Information is from multiple posts saying i cannot update over OTA since i flashed stock firmware .That is why it was no you may not not no .
Not that i would know being a member of XDA i never use OTA/Kies and they don't exist on my phone . So you may be right and those countless posters with stock roms and no OTA may have some other problem .

Im thinking of trading my phone for the note 2 its just so i can restore to stock and for the convenience of the next owner that all stock features (including OTA updates) work

and "no" is the answer to the post about the Nexus S - SGS3 does not behave the same as the pure Android Nexus S with regard to updates etc...I know because i have one and been running 4.1.1 on it since July (4.1.2 for the last week)

Why no ? you flash it with a stock rom 4.1.1 and if a OTA 4.1.2 will be released then why won't he receive it ? I don't get it since the rom is official and will remove everything else that was installed on the phone.

If you flash your S3 with Odin it will increase the flash counter and change status to modified which will break OTA. Not the same with the 2 year old Nexus S as you'll know. The newer S3 has been modified to detect modifications. There are ways around this using mobile Odin etc. but this is just one indication that just because something works on your 2 year old Nexus S doesn't mean it'll work on the latest technology S3.
It's also why I keep bleating on about not giving advice based on supposition, conjecture or what Joe Bloggs posted elsewhere...advice should be based on experience otherwise its worthless, or even worse, misleading and dangerous.

OK thanks for the info, now a newer question. What will happen if someone flashed a stock firmware (4.0.4 dutch) with a stock firmware (4.1.1 poland) via odin ? Will the OTA be blocked as well ? And what will happen if you flash it later with a 4.1.1 dutch stock firmware via odin ?
A friend of mine never rooted or messed with his phone, he only used odin so he could get jellybean faster.
Edit: His flashcounter said this

Root + firmware updates.

Hi. I'm rooting now. I think. The dealbreaker is, will I be able to get the latest offical firmware updates even on a rooted device?
Thanks a lot in advance.

Yes. You can always flash the official firmwares. However, you'll need to root it again when you do.
IF u have updated firmware KE2 can u root like normal still? or do u have to downgrade first?
if you are wanting to upgrade officially, just do it through Kies. you will loose your root, but you can re-root and it will keep the latest firmware upgrade [like KE2]
Rumble
KE2 root then upgrade kernel to KE2 after root .
If you have an update through Kies or the original phone firmware then Kies is your update path .
If you have flashed firmware via Odin then you will usually find that codes no longer match and Kies has no firmware for the codes on the phone .

So u can put whatewer firmware u want in ur phone ? How i can see my firmware version , in seting about it say xxkd9 ^^ i dont know whats that and how i can buck it up leater :/ When i conect to kies it say this device canot be updated
OK! Thanks all for your replies!
So, now as I am on a rooted device, when I plug my phone to the computer and it finds an official firmware via Kies, I can safely install it without manually taking the root away? This is done by automatic? That's how I understand. It's not like my phone is angry and punished me by bricking?
Thanks again.
Seems pretty difficult to brick the SGS2. I bought a little jig off ebay for £4 which automatically puts the device into download mode - useful even if the three-button method doesn't work. Also resets the custom binary count
What happens to my root exclusive apps if a firmware update deletes the root access?
Flashed KE7....
...my first post.
So I flashed KE7 (newest firmware), ...I originally had Root on the KE2, as per the instructions in the ROM & Developers Section for the SGS2........after flashing KE7 I still have root, AND KE7, with no yellow triangle.
I am not complaing just pleasantly surprised I did not have to Re-Root....anyone else had this.
Since I cannot post in the Development section yet I thought I would comment here.
Also would like to say what a fantastic job the guys developing are doing on these sites, you provide alot of geeks and non-geeks with many happy evenings.

I just ordered mine and started reading more about Android. So may i ask what is KE2 and KE7? The SGII hasnt been out for more then a month or two i think so is there already several updates?
If so what do they add? very curious
KE2 and 7 are just firmware updates from Samsung, am not sure if they are generic or related to specific markets. KE7 works for me, I still have root and now I have the extra 4mb (833 to 837 mb)....so something worked.

Not sure if yours came with KE7 but if you upgraded did you loose all your data/settings? Comming from iPhone i'm used to loose them all when flashing but then i can simply connect to iTunes and restore everything just the way it was (game saves, all phone settings, appz&games, contact etc).
How is this achieved in Android enviroment (SGII) when you flash a new firmware?
(contact, calendar, bookmars i know will be synced back through google but i'm more intressted in my save data, appz and settings).I read Titanum backup does this but not sure if you can transfer from one firmware to another?
sorry for many questions but Android is a new world for me.
Kies firmware does not wipe data etc .
Odin update does not wipe data but depends upon the update .
Rule one RTFM
Rule two RTFM
Rule three Backup your EFS folder
Rule four have a copy of original firmware if possible
Rule five have a backup
Rule six read the FAQS on the post thats flashing current firmware custom rom or whatever .

[Q] galaxy s2 wont update

Hi i bought a new samsung galaxy s2 the other day and immediately checked for updates ota. it said an update was available, so i downloaded it and clicked install. the phone rebooted and began updating but once it got to 14 percent it stopped, rebooted then said update was unsuccessful. So i connected to kies and it told me my phone wasnt compatible for updates via kies. any ideas?
Kies is useless, if you really want to update you can use odin yourself... up to you and voids warranty
Try uninstalling and reinstalling but too be honest, forget kies...
hmm. ok. any ideas on why the ota update stops at 14 percent? im on stock 2.3.4 and not rooted.
yes, because kies is rubbish....
settings - about phone - update... Over The Air update is probably not available lol ...
With odin you can flash stock updates... really simple, but get used to the phone and if you want to take the leap, its not difficult but do plenty of reading, it can a bit daunting initially...
Is there anything wrong with your phone or just hungry for the latest version?
OTA is not in use/working for many yet but is supposed to be working when ICS is released .

You said you're in the US? Then there isn't a stock ROM for the i9100 for your region. I'm in the US too. You should be able to use any from Intratech's official firmware thread just fine. I flashed from XWKE7 for the UK (2.3.3), that came with the phone, to XXKI3 for Poland (2.3.5). Haven't found a need to upgrade beyond that yet, but there are newer versions available.

ahh of course :/ well thanks for the info!

A couple of questions.

got my s3 yesterday and I thought I would try to upgrade officially rather than root straight away. tried kies first but wouldn't work and then I thought I would try the update through the phone but my phone doesn't have that in the about device bit.
so my questions are is there something wrong with my phone? and should I just use odin and flash the latest stock firmware? or which is the best custom firmware that keeps all the stock functions?
my apologies of this has all been covered before.
thanks
First we need to know what firmware have your phone preinstalled.

Your phone should be able to receive OTA updates, Kies is for most users a pain in the xxx. Best way to update is to flash the updated rom through Odin (see item 2 and 3 in my signature). For custom roms see the developers thread, there are many good rom`s with all the stock features. My preference is what you see in my banner. First read up about rooting, flashing, CWM and stuff to avoid problems
Well, since you are asking in XDA, YES don't wait for OTA or Kies. Use odin to flash original firmware.
Root it as fast as you can
Try every custom roms until you found the one you like the most.
Happy flashing

I appreciate all your answers. I'm not new to to flashing as my last phone was an S2 running wajk miui, just curious as to whether there was something wrong with my phone as it doesn't have the update in about device.
didn't want to root straight away as I'm not convinced I want to keep this phone yet, not impressed with it as I thought I'd be.

No update well that begs the question is their an update for your phone .
No OTA in settings About Phone System Update that suggestions that the vendor has removed OTA updates .If so firmware updates are via Kies when the vendor decides to push them out .

Just bought S3 and want to ROOT and install OTA 4.1.2, possible?

Hi Guys,
I just bought a new Galaxy S3 here in New Zealand and before I start using it, I want to update it to the latest version, I believe 4.1.2 and then root it, can this be done? whats the best option for me? I see the Galaxy Toolkit to do the rooting, is this the most popular/best ?
Also after rooted, can I still do the OTA updates or will I have to flash custom roms?

If 4.1.2 was not yet launched in NZ, then you will not get any update for your phone at the moment.
What you could do is, root your phone and then install the 4.1.2 version (Poland)(root is not required for flashing though). For rooting refer to the stickies in general section. Popular methods are CF-Root 6.4 (incl. CWM as recovery) or CF-Auto-Root (keeps stock recovery) (both can be found in dev. section).
After rooting you will not be able to get OTA updates though, whereas KIES should still work (but you will loose root if you update).
In addition, make sure to read all the stickies and guides for rooting before you touch anything! Especially the EFS backup procedure.
I hope it helps.
Rooting your phone voids it from getting OTA updates.

After rooting OTA updates will not work. But you can still get the firmware and flash them through Odin. This will remove root and will have to go through the rooting procedure again.
I feel samsung will release 4.1.2 for other regions soon and my suggestion would be to wait for that and then go ahead with rooting

Thanks guys yeah 4.1.2 does not look like its been released yet, I'll wait for it to come out then root cheers!
I used to wait for offical releases, then realised there was no need - the custom ROMs are far better than the official and much faster at new releases than regional Samsung rollout. They also get rid of the battery sapping bling most people only use the once.
If you are going to root anyhow, then the warranty isn't a concern.
Just had bad experiences with 3rd-party ROM's. Had a Desire Z and ran about 5 different roms, cyanogen, gingerbread and ICS variants, mimcry, ilwt, extreme mod, and none of them seemed to run very well after a few weeks of use. The stock ROM on this galaxy is flying like no tomorrow! especially after simply disabling the garbage apps

I'll admit that Samsung could teach HTC quite a few things about writing a good ROM, I'm sticking with customs of the stock jb 4.1.2 for now as it all works so well and saves me having to remember what needs disabling. I tried a few minimalist roms before sticking with the viking one.
I've got a 4.1.2 in NZ but that's because my phone bricked and they updated it when fixing it(4.1.2 supposed to have the fix for bricking)

[Q] Flash international firmware instead of branded? (Also random reboots)

Greetings!
My mom has a Galaxy S2 which has some rebooting problems (it randomly reboots once or twice a day, and loses a lot of battery as a result?). I am thinking this is because there is a firmware problem (although it could be hardware too).
I wanna try and flash the international samsung firmware on the phone instead of the 3 Denmark (Three) branded one I currently have on, and see if that resolves the problem. I am not sure if I have the right branded firmware either, since I tried to edit the build.prop file when I left and managed to get my device stuck on a bootloop while I was on a 12 hour plane ride (now without music lol), and I flashed the only 3 branded firmware I could find.
So, can I turn this into an "international version"? And why do you think it reboots?
Hi, I don't know about rebooting but your mom phone(battery) has insane fuel gauge chip(everyone has it) that chip takes battery level ... sometimes it adds battery level.
Maybe try to flash xxlsj jb leak ?
Regards,
Paulius
Spoiler
XDA the best
P.S. Correct me if I am wrong
Yes, you can. About the reboots, see if the international firmware helps.
Attached is a picture of how I lose battery, can someone give me a link to the international firmware version? Maybe not the most new one so I can install it and have an OTA update so I know that works. All the CSC codes and stuff makes me confused.
Do you think this is a software or hardware problem?
Also, how strict is Samsung about rooted devices and RMA?
Thank you very much!

JB? try Odin.
You can always go back to ICS if you want to.
In all honesty I really just want a firmware version I can flash via stock recovery then update via OTA or KIES. This is my moms phone, I will play around with custom roms and beta releases on my Nexus 4 when it's done being repaired
Actually the major reason is that I do not wanna flash another bootloader and stuff like that if I have to deliver the phone to get repaired. Then it's gonna be a pain to return for repair

ICS 4.0.3 Unbranded is your best bet. Just like a out-of-the-box device ready to get the Jelly bean update via OTA/Kies.
I have downloaded the file from Sammobile, it contains two files:
I9100XWLPG_I9100HTDLP4_I9100NELP4_HOME.tar.md5
SS_DL.dll
Do I flash this via ODIN or what? Don't I need more files for that?
