Nexus 7 vs HTC Flyer - HTC Flyer, EVO View 4G

How much faster is Nexus 7 compare to HTC Flyer for real world usage.
I've been using Flyer for about a year now and it's seem to be very slow to me, especially when surfing websites.
Can Nexus handle flash better with Quad cores and all?
I want to know if it worth giving away my Flyer and buy Nexus 7. If it's not too much different, then I'll just keep the flyer.

I've had both and TBH with my Flyer being overclocked to 1.84 GHZ I can notice no difference between the two in smoothness when browsing, tweeting, reading..etc
That said though, JB and quad core does make a difference ofcourse, especially when games are concerned.

I don't know about the Nexus 7, but for your Flyer, you may want to try the Puffin Browser off of the Android Market/Google Play before you buy another tablet. It sped my web surfing up tremendously. The company suggests trying the free version of the app first.
Also, u may want to search Nexus 7 + flash. I've read that it doesn't natively support flash (not certain), but hopefully that's nothing that a downloaded app can't fix.

I have great browsing with Boat browser.

Trust me its a huge speed difference. You guys saying its barely noticeable are just lieing to yourselves. Its like comparing choppiness to butter. Yea there similar alright. Cmon now.
Aside from speed the flyer has a full 7 inch screen in complete use (gingerbread only) and a nice pen function going for it.

yeah gotta agree with you. nexus 7 is faster. That feeling when I use my brother's Nexus7 and then i go back using my flyer ><

Im in the EXACT situation haha

Flyer good...Nexus incredible!
I've had my Flyer for over a year and have been fighting rom issues since then, it is workable (except GPS...Shame on you HTC for not fixing this!). Side by side -I've had my Nexus for 3 days now, the nexus screen is brighter, better contrast- whites now look slightly yellowed on the Flyer. Nexus speed is much better(expected), BT, GPS, & WiFi all operate flawlessly. I am using a usb adaptor cable from Amazon ($2.00)! to further expand storage and also connects to other devices for file transfer and viewing.Battery life on the Flyer was a solid 4.5 hours with constant video loop running- I expect 2/3 to twice the run time with the Nexus. I have a rooted-32g Nexus...couldn't be happier at this point!
Final note- I side loaded Flash and it works well with Firefox Beta.:fingers-crossed: Update:Boat browser is very fast and stable, I usually have to reboot my Flyer a couple of times a day due to lag or sometimes freezing...not so with the Nexus.

The two aren't even comparable. The N7 blows the flyer/view4g away in every aspect. I have the Veiw4g and the N7, and I don't even use the view anymore. It's so slow and crappy, it's not even worth it. If you are thinking about getting the N7, just do it. The flyer is dated now, and it's not going to get any fast no matter what you do.
Oh, and as far as media consumption goes, the N7 can actually handle everything I throw at it. I can't even watch my vulkano in anything more than low res on the view. But the N7 I can put it to it's highest quality setting and it works great. Same with Hulu, and Netflix. As well as streamed content from my HTPC.

I've played with the N7 at stores and it's pretty nice.
If Someone gave me one for free, I probably would use my flyer drastically less.
However, as much as I want project butter on my flyer I find that it would probably be a waste of money for me to personally upgrade. I'll still do the same stuff with either device.. Browse web, facebook, read books, and avoid pulling out a netbook when I can. So it raises the question why upgrade if I have a perfectly working device?

You sir are corect N7 blows but not Flyer away but simply BLOWS; with no SD card, no stereo sound, no vibra, no front camera, no pen, no HW buttons; so wjhat extra from cpu and scree is there left at all? No sim?
So that means:
limited to no small amount of space
Cant do videocalls (good luck with mirrors)
No silent alert wheil in classes, meetings ect...
Less screen
ect ect...
For mine usage of device it BLOWS unlike Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 wich is quite nice; more up to date device then Flyer and has that "magic" JB/ICS, wich Flyer doesent; but even with the JB ports we do have for Flyer we have more working hardware then Nexus have. And good luck with rearlly suported tegra games.

Umm, they are coming out with a 3g N7, you realize that, right? The sound between the two is comparable, as I HAVE both. Is having vibrate really necessary on a tablet? And it has a front camera, just no rear camera? I'm beginning to wonder if you have even used the device. It has a front camera specifically for video calls. HW buttons are a matter of preference, but not a necessity. The pen I will give you, but when you can't even get HTC to FIX the crap they broke with the update, IT"S NOT WORTH DEALING WITH IT. I will never own another HTC device after HTC screwed us over on the tablets. (not to mention the year wait on getting ICS on my old Tbolt, or 8 months for the rezound I bought) The SD card missing is a downer, but there are many workarounds that it's not a total loss. There is WIFI storage sharing (so I can use the 80GB I have on my phone between it's 64GB sd and 16 internal) Then there is USB OTG.
So that means:
limited to no small amount of spaceYou are not limited, just not as easy to add storage as with the flyer/View
Cant do videocalls (good luck with mirrors)This is just flat wrong
No silent alert wheil in classes, meetings ect... Really? It doesn't have a LED, but it does still "alert", just on screen. How many alerts do you have set up on your tab? I have almost none. Mostly calendar appt's and such.
Less screenHow? If there is a difference(16:9 vs 16:10) its a matter of a .1 inch or so.
ect ect...

You have a rear camera/SD card. that's it. I have both. (actually, I have all three. View/Flyer/N7. The flyer is my Fiancees. and I have the View/N7.

I cant give u sdcard to share u mine documents with is prity common on all mobiel devices. U cant film your gf or take pic of her, u cant draw or handwrite, no way to listen to quality music since onlly suporting 1 chanel insted of minimum 2 for stereo.

CORECTOMUNDO - u did figure it already with rear camera working SD slot but u forgot the pen and hw buttons we have stereo sound as well on JB and vibra working. All this is working on Flyer loaded with JB and is something N7 wont EVER have. Never Ever.
All i am saying is for what i need tab N7 sucks. Now if your onlly use of tab is a bit faster browsing i guess N7 is a winer buy. I unfortunally expect more. And there is much N7 does simplly not offer. Its not cheap for no reason I wont go into ghosting and cracking screens...

Yeah, I still honestly love the build quality on the flyer and it still has a relatively nice screen.
Since you are on the JB rom, I need to ask did they get the screen to turn off properly yet? That was the only thing holding me back personally. As long as it has good battery life I am really considering using it.

if you are referring to the backlight remaining on after locking the screen - it still occurs quite often. however, if i turn it on and off a few times it eventually completely turns off (can be quite annoying) i am really not sure of the battery life as i basically keep the flyer charged.
P.S. I recently had a few random reboots ( but only once while I was actually using it ) and it won't play HD YouTube - not that big o f a deal to me

[Q] Is the new HTC Flyer really worth it?

Hey guys
I have owned HTC devices since the G1 n now i have the mytouch 4G rooted running Evil SD lates 2.3 port for it.
I wanna invest some money in a tablet. The MYT4G has a good size screen but sometimes it can strain your eyes when watching movies or heavy internet surfing. I want a portable tablet with the latets software and some of the newest feature. I have t mo. Here in the states. So the WiFi version of the Flyer is the only one available yet..
I have a questions. Your answers will help me deacide to buy one.
1. Does the Flyer have the ability to connect to a phones hotspot? Meaning if I tether wirelessly
2. I know there is no phone calls capabilities, but can you skype and quik?
3. Does it have a SD port?
4. And based on your experience with the device do you think it will be rootable in the future?
5. Also how does it sound? The speakers and w a headset is it real good.
Thanks I have many more questions but i think these r the most important for me. Any other things you think I should know prior to buying I would love to hear em.
Thanks for reading
Hi
Yes to all of those, I have the 3g model, and love it the form factor of it is perfect. I've played with quite a few 10" and they aren't for me.
The only down side I can see to flyer its a touch heavy, but its no heavier than any tablets out at the moment, I just would preferred HTC to have put HTC on a wee diet.
The CPU is fast, the only slow down I've every had was first boot up whilst my apps where caching.
The speakers aren't great great, but there not bad, you could listen to music or watch a movie, saying that if I was listening to music I'd probably hook up some speakers.
But really loving the flyer.

To answer your initial question, it really depends on what you are looking for. If you want a 7" device or the ability to write digital notes, highlight and mark on books, PDFs, and websites, or need to sketch/draw on the go, then yes, it is worth it simply because there is no other device that would allow you the features that the pen does. And if you are in the market for a 7" tablet, I would say it's the best 7" out right now.
To answer your other questions:
1.Yes, I have T-Mobile and have had no problem connecting it to my cell phone wirelessly
2. I was able to download Skype from the market; I don't use Skype, but I'm assuming it shouldn't be a problem. Could not find Qik in the market.
3. MicroSD port, yes
4. I've never rooted my devices, so I cannot say.
5.The sound is pretty clear and loud (this is based off watching videos, I haven't listen to music on here). I don't necessarily like the placement of the speakers, I thought they should have them on the both sides of the device for a more balanced stereo sound. But I'm into audio, so that's just my thought. But they are clear and can get loud when the volume is turned up to the max.
I have a few videos on my YouTube channel, CheckThisGadget, going over the HTC Flyer and doing the pen test. So that should help you in making your decision also.
Great device, as other have said.
In addition, as HTC release firmware updates I think it'll get faster as HTC optimise Sense and Honeycomb is supposed more efficient.
It lacks phone functionality..
They made a change to the market which causes my apps button to be accesible only by menu button.
A Lot of software available trough other devices ain't accessible by the flyers market.
HTC Watch sometimes works , sometimes not.
All by all .... I think a lot of work on the rom has to be done. It's not worth at THIS moment in my opinion.
To the OP, yes to the inquiries. I feel rooting will be dependent upon popularity of the device. Speakers are what you would expect from small compact drivers... A bit tinny, but okay.
IMO, the pen integration sets this device apart from other tablets. HTC did a good job adapting apps for pen usage. I used it extensively at meetings during the week, and it was impressive. If you don't have a need for the pen then, there are better options for tablets out their... Again in my opinion.
Thanks for all your replys
One of the post did make really consider what I wanted it for, n its basically to replace my phone in terms of web browsing n media player. I like to call using my phone I really don't see why I woulnt want a tablet to make a phone call. LOL but the 3g will make it real independent.
I'm not to crazy bout HTC scribe but its a very nice feature since I do go to college it would be great for note taking.
I also looked at the notion link tablet. Idk if its out or what but it looked great.
Thanks again for all the helpful replies I think I'm 95% leaning towards HTC flyer than moat devices.

I too considerd the Notion Ink a while back but decided against it due to the tablet coming from a small shop in India and support may or may not be up to par. Plus ordering one put you on a list as units were being built.
As for browsing the web, the Flyer is great. I enjoy surfing the web more on the Flyer than my Xoom. I have not had one force close on the Flyer yet which I cannot say for the Xoom. Tabbed browsing is missing for now but Honeycomb will fix that. The speakers are pretty good, not great. You can download an equalizer from the market that will help when using headphones.
Overall, it's a nice device and suits my needs perfectly (web browsing, email, occasional games)
Yes its worth it, it is the only true multi function 7 inch tablet on the market.
I got mine two days ago in Hong Kong and I'm really loving it! It cost ~USD 700 (for the Wifi + 3G version w/stylus). I have to say it's the perfect size and the screen resolution is perfect for browsing! I would say it's worth the USD 700 that I paid for. Now I just have to get a 3G data in China...
I'd say it is worth it. I rarely use my laptop now because I enjoy using my tablet for browsing, email, etc. I did buy the Scribe pen but I actually rarely use it. Maybe if there was more functionality for it (handwriting recognition, more app support) I would use it more. Still feels decently polished although I do miss Honeycomb and being able to download those true tablet apps.
I personally think, that if HTC engineered their Flyer tablet with Stantum display it would be a Killer device, a game changer. Seriously - a resistive display, that supports 10-finger multitouch is awesome. Notes, drawing, photo editing, CAD software on small screens, and, if it was used in a smartphone - imagine using your phone in winter without getting your gloves of. Hm, dreams, dreams...
Hi
The old sceeen question.... I presonally own a pair a gloves with special tips for using screens in winter....
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using XDA App
If the performance of the resistive is anything like the old WM phones, then it wouldn't be an improvement. If you want a resistive screen android tablet, there are plenty of Chinese mid-tablets out there.
10 point touch sounds interesting, but why? Some of the app gestures requiring three finger touch is confusing enough.

WOW, HTC underrated! This is awesome

OK so listen here, I have owned the following device listed below, yes I know I'm crazy LOL, I'm a tech guy and I love to try out everything.
Items owned within the last 2 months.
Ipad
Ipad2
Motorola xoom
Asus Transformer and Dock
Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 I/O edition
Nook Color rooted with CM7....
Ok now, I did like every device I did own but something just seemed missing from them all. Out of all if them I will say the Transformer was the best, accept for the sound.
Now on to me owing the HTC Flyer with nice white case and magic Pen, and I will go all out now and say that its the best damn android tablet I have now owned. I love everything about the Flyer, The screen is right up there with the best of them and I think it even looks better then the Ipad2 and transformer screens, viewing angles are tops. The text is so clear and perfect.
Now I have read reviews about the HTC Flyer sounds lacking, honestly I have no Idea what the reviewers are talking about the HTC flyer sounds is amazingly loud and freaking clear sound. So don't read the review about the sound not being good, the HTC flyer sound blows the Transformer speakers out of the water.
Now lets talk about speed, yes speed, With just a single 1.5 ghz core processor this thing seems so much faster the dual core processors, you say how, well do a test for your self,m the web browser has been the best experience out of all the Tablets I have owned. Crazy as it sounds but its super fast.
Now the Pen, yes it may sound like a gimmick but its not and its fun and useful to you in its own right.
Anyway, I hear honeycomb is going to be released for the Flyer, and I will say there's really no need fcor it, I love the Flyer as is, I Give big Kudos to HTC on making and sweet like mobile Tablets, in the end people that's all I wanted was a nice mobile device and The Flyer takes the cake.
I give it a 9 oput of 10.
Don't listen to the reviews, this tab is way underrated.
i 100% agree thing is sooo nice...i barely use my laptop anymore
I have been down a very similar path with tablets. I have tried them all. No doubt about it, the flyer is the best. I truley love this tablet, and actually use itnom a daily basis.

That's why I sold my Tegra 2 tablet and still have my flyer.
about the processor
A 1.5 ghz single core processor will always blow away a 1 ghz dual core processor until applications are optimized for dual core processors. If an application wasn't designed with multi core processors in mind then it is basically 1.5 ghz single core vs. a 1 ghz dual core that will only run on 1 core. Right now there are relatively few applications out there that are actually optimized for the dual core processors, so you rarely see the increase in speed from the tegra2 processor that other tablets have.
I love my HTC Flyer and its wimpy 1.5 ghz processor that I've been reading about in all the reviews that are written by people who don't know what they are talking about ha.

Its hype don't do it. I owned the tab 10.1 limited sold it bought the flyer returned the flyer bought another limited sold it bought the flyer again. The tab is a nice piece of hardware honeycomb is lacking right now. The flyer is amazing and will develop a cult like following. I prefer it over all tablets right now. Its the small things such as the propriety cable that also takes micro USB, the beaitful screen, pen is really useful, size and weight are prefect, and it takes a micro sd cards to expand storage. I have a 32gb SD card and its awesome.
I don't want honeycomb on it unless its just as functuional as it is now.

I agree with all you wrote about the Flyer. Before I buy my, I also read the reviews and was afraid that it was a little bit slow, because every review note the single core CPU and that it is slower than the dual core tablets.
I thought the tester not only under impress from the ipad hype but really test and feal it. But it compare the Flyer with many other devices, also the (reported) fast ones like the ipad 2. And in all my tests the Flyer was much faster and react directly.

So sure? Okay, mathematical is 2 x 1 bigger then 1.5 and also in applications which make many calculations but a tablet is not a calculator and not use as one but mainly a user interface and here it depends only on the OS and the one for ipad and honeycomb are both optimized. But in an OS you haven't so much use in a dual core system.
Only in some games you will have an advantage. This is the same here as by other devices and PCs where the advantage from a dual core in normal daily use is also limited.
So, don't expect that one day the dual core are much faster...
Mathematically it doesn't matter until the application is written for multi threaded processing. Or parallel processing, whatever you'd like to call it. Once those applications are optimized you will see a speed different in the performance of processing intensive applications. The few that are out right now are mostly games. And if you are in the market for a gaming device, I don't think most people buy a 7 inch tablet that comes with true pen support.
I'm really very happy about this thread. I haven't tried many tablets, so I have little to compare. I have messed with a friend's eee Transformer, and it's ok, but I think the build quality is kind of poor, and the tegra2 processor is slower than my flyer... as mentioned above. In real-world performance, we were both playing back 720p mkvs in Mobo Player... his stuttered occasionally enough to be annoying. The flyer never had a hiccup. I'll take the 1.5ghz proc over the tegra2 any day. The form factor is also really great as well. I do look forward to honeycomb on it, just for Google's Video Chat.
again, what matters to me is the size and performance, and out of all the tablets I mention I owned, the flyer kicks all there butts.
I mean all I hear is about all the other tablets screens, let me tell you the flyer's screen is better the all of them, I know some will say "yeah your saying that because I own the flyer", No really the flyer's screen is flat out no pun intended "Quietly Brilliant". Viewing angles are best I have seen, even better theh the ipad2 and Asus.
The battery is great too. It has lasted much linger then the Xoom I owned and the Transformer. Asus says the transformer has 9.5 hours, I beg to differ, my battery on the Asus tab alone without the dock was dying in just about 6 hours ion full charge.
I'm still learning with the magic pen, well that's what I call it. Ans its just an awesome feature,
I will go on record again and say this, I don't know what some of these guys reviewing are saying about the speakers, the Speaks on the flyer are freaking tops for me. It is right up there with the xoom's speakers which is noticed to be the best. I say the Flyers speakers are one of the best!
I think people just give bad reviews to give them. I'm unbiased and I think the flyer is a complete WIN, best tablet of 2011 bar none, and of course this is all my opinion. I just don't want people passing this thing up until they own one or at least use it for a day, I'm telling you a day with the flyer and all opinions will change.
Bottom Line GREAT JOB HTC...
I think the main problem with people taking a dive with the HTC flyer is the lack of developer support. I was going to pick one up and I heard that there's just too little support for the device . I think that's why people get the galaxy tab 10.1 cause even if it's not a great product out of the box, dev's make it a really great device when they work their magic.

I'm not paying $500 to $600 for a device with no Micro Sd card support, so IMO galaxt tab =Possible Fail.

Well, first off it almost instantly acquired root access... and actually the 8.9 will be a bigger hit than the 10.1 I think.. no sd card is kinda fail but the 8.9 will have sd support and people seem to like that size. Samsung has always had a great track record for developer support, galaxy tab 7', galaxy S lines etc. I'll probably pick up the flyer to test it out properly for the 14 days, but I played with it for about 40 minutes and I just really disliked the little hiccups in the launcher =/, but I think I should have a proper few days before I make my final decision

I agree the 8.9 will be a success, but honeycomb still is crap right now.

Well, I keep reading it will include sd card support. If there's no sd support, I'm just going to buy the eee pad slider when it comes out this summer. If the 8.9 does have sd support, I'll be going with the 8.9, but I'm still going to pick up a flyer today and run it through it's paces. Who knows, I might fall in love with it .

Thinking about picking up a flyer...

I really like the pen input aspect, but it seems like for it to be useful you have to flash to HC (which doesn't look easy at all). I'm coming from a Nook Color and while I love it, there are a few things it can't quite do and in light of my wife needing a replacement for her broken original Nook, I'm looking at 7" tablets and giving her the NC.
I've tried a capacitive stylus on the Nook and it doesn't work very well, but from what I've seen of the digital stylus on the flyer it looks like exactly what I wanted. My question is can it be enabled for all applications in gingerbread or do you have to flash to the beta HC for it to work in all apps? How difficult is this to do? I'm mostly interested in sketchbook, Evernote, AndCAD and AutocadWS.
Also, how well does it do with HD video? I have a bunch of recorded TV on my computer (captured through media center and an HD tv card) and the NC is not nearly powerful enough to play them without re-encoding. I'm not worried about image quality (the re-encoded videos look great once run through the two separate encodes required to get them working natively on the NC), but I don't want to re-encode as it's a PITA due to the media format media center uses - I just want to stream them via DLNA. I figured the 1.5ghz processor in the flyer might be the only tablet that could do it as I don't think a dual core would help too much.
Looking at picking up the flyer and stylus at BB tonight, seems to be worth the extra $90 vs. the Lenovo A1 if the stylus can be made to work in the above mentioned apps.
For watching video, you might check out the Archos line of tablets.

This company has always focused on the media aspects their devices. There isn't the pen support like on the Flyer, so you will have to use a capacitive stylus.

Thanks, I've gone down the capacitive route and it doesn't meet my needs. Are the archos tablets able to handle high def videos better or just better setup for media play interface wise? I don't care much about the interface or anything, just whether it has the power to play HD video or not.
They play hi-def and have a wide range of codec support. Check out the forum at www.archosfans.com for more discussion of this.

The Archos 70 doesn't appear competitive with the flyer. I don't really want a larger tablet...
I tested a 720p anime that i downloaded onto the flyer and it seemed to play okay in rockplayer
I bought the HTC Flyer today and I love it! I sold my Viewsonic G Tablet and with the money I got from that, I went to Best Buy at lunch and picked it up.
I really like the size of this, and the speed is fantastic. This really is a well built and great is a super tablet.
I am really glad that I got this tablet.
The Flyer rocks. Like Butterflygirl, I tested 720p MKV files and they play great on the Flyer, but choke on my Droid 3 and Thrive.
IMO, the Flyer is the best tablet in the market, when considering the total of quality, function, performance and price.
I bought a case and 32gb micro sd for $56 delivered. The case is great for $15 and has two stand positions.

Where did you buy the 32gb micro sd card?
I came to a flyer from a rooted nook color. So far (after about a week) I love it. Definite upgrade. I just got the stylus today and it is literally night and day from the capacitative stylus I tried on nook color.
Edit: forgot to add... I tried a 1080p mkv x264 blu ray rip and it didn't play. I haven't tried any other video files, but net flix works

The case is fantastic, BTW.
Im using the Flyer with Gingerbread. The pen is good for taking notes in MSWord, annotations in pdf. No problem so far. Im looking forward to getting HC. The Flyer will be a "killer" then.
I'll be getting a flyer this week as well. My primary concerns are battery life and viewing the screen outdoors. What's the battery life consensus on this bad boy?
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using Tapatalk
I can't comment too much on the battery life, as I have only had it for 2 days, but from what I've experienced with it, its really nice. If you do wifi occasionally, and some videos here and there, but use it mostly for reading books/pdfs (as I do), I estimate that it can last around 3 days with a single charge.
As for the screen, when reading something outside on a sunny day with 0 clouds, I can read off of the screen as long as the sun isn't directly reflecting off of it. It's really nice.

How is it better than the nook? I have my nook rooted and it works really well, I just really want the pen integration and would like to be able to play recorded tv without transcoding. How does the screen of the flyer compare to the nook?
I'm looking at going to HC right off the bat due to being able to use the pen in all apps, how difficult is this?

it's as difficult as the user is inexperienced using adb & fastboot to dig out from almost guaranteed mishaps. believe the health warnings. i like running HC on my flyer but it is buggy compared to GB and the development is stagnate pending an official HTC HC-Sense release still unannounced.

Mixed Feelings about my Tranformer Prime

This is the first tablet I have purchased but not the first one I have used and I bought it to accompany my Samsung Galaxy S2 and my iPhone but I must confess I am not a big Apple fan.
Why am I happy?
I have a Quad Core tablet
It's shiny and new
It isn't an iPad
loving the keyboard
generally works quite well
Why am I unhappy?
GPS - I wanted fully functional GPS
Exporting video in Movie STudio it causes the TFP to reboot.
Many applicaton crashes including google apps
in hindsight i should of waited for a 3g model
Im hoping ics will be the answer to my prayers and asus provide a 3g add on module but time will tell.

I think there are 10's of threads you could have added your opinion to. But, that said, I think if you're hoping for ICS to magically make the Prime a better option for you, you're going to be disappointed. And I'd not hold out for a "3g add on module"--the 3G version of the Prime will be a completely new, redesigned device.
Sounds like you should return your Prime and wait for something that better meets your needs. And just for the record, I only have one app that routinely crashes on my Prime, and it's problematic on other Honeycomb tablets as well. Otherwise, I've found the Prime to be remarkably stable.

ASUS seriously should have waited for ICS until they sold the Prime. The above post is the perfect example of what happens if you rush a generally super nice device with totally crappy software on it...
@OP: Iam sure you will be less sad with ICS
I'm still hoping that Asus will come up with a plastic window solution like the Ipad for its gps problem, they can easily retool the case and fab the plastic insert.
As far as apps go, its not Prime fault. those apps need updating from developers that made them. Google earth works perfectly now as it was just updated the other day. as far as that movie studio goes, I had the same thing happen. I don't like it really. So you can't fault the device from a software standpoint. because that always can be improved. Plus you can expect alot of apps not to be working in ICS because not all apps updated yet to support it. The apps are getting there but alot still out there that needs ICS support.
The GPS issue I can understand. You can bet though that 3g version will be at a minimum $100 more plus you will be tied into a massive data plan which requires a premium extra fee because its a tablet. Prime is still a Good choice. even without GPS working.
I've had my for three days now. I'm deciding if I'm going to return mine or not.
Pros:
Screen and brightness is second to none. Super IPS actually hurts my eyes. Marvelous.
Wifi works fine for me. Mostly like my OG ipad
Camera quality is great. Video and pictures great.
Games like Riptide and Madden play super.
Flash websites like HBO go.com work great compare to OG Transformer that I owned.
I like the when you correct a word it zooms in on the area without a circle.
Kind of fun to hold. So very thin.
Having 64gb thanks to my SD card
With volume+ app. Speakers very nice.
Charges fast
Battery life continues to get better
No screen lag for me when transitioning.
ICS coming soon.
Cons:
GPS is brutally awful. Not sure if its a deal breaker.
Bluetooth and wifi don't work together like they should.
Lack of accessories.
Do I feel this is better than the first TF (owned for 6 months)? Yes.
Is it better than the current tablets now out (including I pad 2 wifi to wifi)? Yes.
Will this be the Blackberry Playbook of 2012 (considering major flaws for some)? Decisions. The last thing I want to see in a couple months is TF Prime for 299.00 at BB.
This thing is going for a premium on EBay right now as well.

I know it might be a matter of, "It's a functionality that should work, end of story..."
But can I ask you what your personal use for GPS is in your particular case? I had a Samsung GT10.1 for 8 months and I used the gps maybe three times. And even then it was locked onto a signal fairly quickly because the used the auto assist wifi signal, and I cannot fathom a usage instance that requires gps without wifi.

release first then ice, or wait for pics then release.
for all Ive heard before the release were come on, just release it already, pics, hc I don't care.
and not everyone start saying they should wait till pics to release it. tough crowd
It's the current battle of selling points with iCS, gps and 3/4g being the main contenders. Any new tablet that does not feature these will suffer from lackluster sales, imo.

I bought this as a work device/toy. At the moment I don't know what I want to use GPS for but I just want my tablet to do what it says it should do on the tin. I don't like Apple but they seem to have set the bar really high and the iPad pretty much does what it says it will do.
I understand what you are saying and it may turn out that I never need it but I paid for it and would at least like the choice to not use it rather than not use it because of an Asus major design flaw.
To add to the list of cons it reboots every morning whether it has been charged or not.
Why wasn't this added to the rest of the gripe threads? Nothing stated here that hadn't already been a rebeating of the dust that used to be the skeleton of the dead horse.
I think we all get it. People always strive to get somethng, then when they get it, they want more.. some more than others.

Course charting in a boat using Navionics software for one. Saved me thousands on a marine gps unit and I'm using a very old Ipad for it now.
I don't expect everyone would do this, but Come'on these statements like, "I never used gps so I don't know why anyone else would", just expose your lack of imagination.
my 2 cents:
Of the 3 tablets I now own...the tf101, ipad 1, and the prime...the prime easily wins the day. Its the best tablet I have ever used.
There are a few niggles.
1. The tf101 has the best wifi of the three. The prime and the ipad 1 score exactly the same in my testing for wifi performance....which is good enough for me. Not sure why people are griping about wifi so much while mine is par or better than the ipad 1...at 50+ feet and 4 walls from my router I still get 3-4 Mbps. Netflix, etc streams beautifully from the farthest corners in my house.
I don't often bother with bluetooth on my android tablets so I have yet to test this.
2. I rarely use my tablets for GPS so this is not a deal breaker for me. I have an offline GPS system anyway that does not require live data connection which I prefer on the road. I have yet to test the prime GPS...right now GMAPS snaps up my location using IP address I imagine.
After that this tablet plays high profile 1080p mkv files both from my network and from the sdcard without a hitch, has a GORGEOUS display, slim, light, has great battery life and runs honeycomb better than any tablet out there (I've fiddled with just about all of them). ICS will be the icing on the cake.
Sometimes these forums can turn us into quibblers. I never would have noticed the issues raised here on my typical usage of the prime or any of my tablets. For example, I never knew the TF101 has such great wifi performance compared to the Ipad 1 until I tested it because of this forum. The ipad always seemed just fine to me and so does the prime....and really thats all that matters.

In all likelihood it sounds as if the assisted GPS will serve your purposes just fine then. I really do not understand why anyone thought this tablet was going to be a Garmin. I also thought (and suppose I am or could be worng), that this was always advertised as aGPS. GPS does work when it is assisted by wifi, and it works pretty well when it's not. I wouldn't rely on it to drive, but I don't know why anyone would rely on anything other than a dedicated GPS to navigate - I certainly never take off on my bicycle to place unknown with just my phone, I always have my Garmin. If someone needs to navigate then they need to buy a dangerous Garmin and not think they "Got lucky" and scored a $500 tablet that allows included a real GPS that costs at least $100+ app on it's own.
Anyway.....the rebooting thing sounds like a real pain.. Mine has never reboot randomly. You say it happens in the morning, and I wonder what the culprit could Be? Are you powering it up and then it reboots or waking it Up? I wonder if it's an app.

Accuracy doesn`t really matter.

Maybe you will have better luck than me. But, my Prime couldn't keep a lock, motionless, in the same orientation and location. The GPS just seemed to lose everything and started searching again, for no reason. That was a deal killer for me. If Asus had offered to fix this one problem, it would have been a real keeper! Instead the way they handled it just made me lose all confidence in their ability to support a quality product.
Be prepared to hear that you shouldn't expect GPS to work but that's no problem, and why would you want to use it on a tablet anyway? It would appear that most happy Prime users don't get out much or realize that an automobile is not the only use for GPS!

Should I buy it

I'm fed up with waiting for UK premiere of kindle fire so I decided to buy something that is now on the market.
My choice if HTC flyer as it was discounted recently and I'm looking for something in reasonable price. Would you recommend it? I am little bit afraid after I bought HTC sensation. I was really disappointed with various flaws of that device and would rather avoid it happening again so I'm waiting for you're opinion, do you like it or would you bought something else? Did you experienced any problems?
I'm thinking also about ZTE light tab 2 any other alternatives?

I've owned a few 7" devices and this was well ahead of the rest, I even tried the galaxy 7" plus and liked the Flyer more, It's polished and well built, but only at the right price, if you are paying full price might want to get something newer..... might not.

I considered Archos as well but lack of RAM makes me worried that device might be lagging.
I have the Archos 80 as well and, while it is my favorite device for reading because the screen is larger and it is thin, the Flyer/View is overall a snappier device.
Edit : Archos is supposed.to be getting ICS this month and there are rumors of a 1gb RAM version to be released.

What flaws exactly?
The Kindle Fire is junk compared to the Flyer. Flyer has much higher build quality, more memery, more storage, and a ton of features lacking on the Fire (MicroSD card slot, pen support, GPS, Bluetooth, cameras, microphone, gyro). Its like comparing a sports car with all the options to a stripped down compact car. Not sure what the prices the OP is looking at. But for a while in the US the Flyer was going for only $100 more than the Fire, and for what you get on the Flyer, that is a bargain.

Decision made I'm going for flyer. Hell with kindle fire,I was only considering it because I don't need high end device for my needs and price was reasonable, but flyer price is reasonable as well and it is so much better. I'm going to buy it in next few days.

Its a bit ridiculous to come on here asking if the Flyer will have the same problems as your Sensation, and expect us to dig around in your post history to see what those issues were. If you want you question answered, why not just explain in a sentence or 2 what those issues were?

I am not sure did you actually read my post?
At which point I asked will my Flyer have same issues as my Sensation? I just mention I had lots of problems with my Sensation and asked did you experienced any problems whatsover with Flyer. Two separed things. I would not expect you to have same problems with Flyer as I had with Sensation, however as I experienced some and I am not the only user who had them with this model I was a little bit afraid of buying HTC device after this. To summarise any problems with Flyer would worry me.
It is not important anymore as I bought HTC Flyer already and I am just waiting for delivery.
I have not wrote thousends of posts so it will not be difficult to find but if you really want to know those were:
1. Screen not working while charging - solved but shoul not be there
2. Terrible battery life (10 - 14 hours on heavy use) that is something, that would not bothere me with tablet, but it was extremely annoying with phone.
3. Clumsy Stock Rom and small choice o Custom Roms at this point - solved, Hypoersensation Rom FTW
4. Few smaller issues
And once again I don't care do you have any of those issues with HTC Flyer, for example second point is unimportant in tablet for me, however before I bought I would like not to have device that again will have more then 2-3 bugs which upset many users and which which you have to fully deal on your own.

If that's what you meant, then that is what you should have said, which you clearly did not:

My choice if HTC flyer as it was discounted recently and I'm looking for something in reasonable price. Would you recommend it? I am little bit afraid after I bought HTC sensation. I was really disappointed with various flaws of that device and would rather avoid it happening again so I'm waiting for you're opinion

To me your OP very much sounds like you were asking if the specific problems on your Sensation applied to the Flyer. Even so, unless a person is pretty familiar with that phone, we would have no idea of the type of magnitude of the problems you were talking about. Give us some frame of reference. And if somebody is trying to help you and answer your question, don't tell them to dig around your post history to gather than information. You want to make it easier for people to help you, not harder.
But to answer your question, now that you've defined it much better: I haven't personally had any significant issues with my Flyer. Not sure what you mean by clumsy stock ROM. But I'm a person that is very willing to switch ROMs to get more features and/or better performance. I probably do so on my phone on average every couple of months, sometimes much more often. I've been very satisfied with the stock Flyer ROM, and haven't had much reason to try changing it, aside from upgrading from GB to HC.
The tablet is really snappy, and does everything well that I use it for (web browsing, reading eBooks and comics, watching video and a little gaming). Its really well built, and have had very little issues of apps freezing or FC. The build quality and feel are really great. Depending on the level of use, I easily get a day out of the battery with moderate use, and 2 days with lighter use.
Of course, with any manufacturing process, there will be occasional defective units. Or fluke issues that some users on here have mentioned, but don't seem widespread. But from spending a good amount of time on these forums, the only real consistent problems with the Flyer I can think of are:
1) Honeycomb upgrade not compatible with some software (particularly some games). Completely depends on what apps you use. It hasn't been an issue to me at all.
2) I had an issue where it would sometimes not connect to my PC over USB, but if I unplugged it, and plugged USB in again, it would connect. It was pretty annoying, as this would happen maybe 50% of the time, and sometimes take multiple attempts of re-plugging in to make it work. But I still would consider this a pretty minor bug. And once I upgraded to HC, this issue completely disappeared.
3) Some people have mentioned slower performance after upgrading to HC. I haven't experienced this at all. The performance is just as snappy as GB on my Flyer. And considering that HC has a bit more animations and still performing as fast as GB, makes me feel that HTC did a good job on the ROM. I upgraded using the "unofficial" globatron method.

Thank you for your answer.
I did not provided what issues I had with Sensation because I did not consider it relevant as my intention was to find out about any issues flyer might have. mentioning my phone was only done to give an example of situation were Htc sold device witch had many unsolved problems and I was trying to avoid that kind of situation again. Anyway my flyer arrived by ***** today and I am quite happy with it do far although I had only about 30 minutes to pay with it.
By clumsy stock ROM I meant that for example sensation was actually working slower (there is many videos on YouTube showing this) then Htc desire because stock ROM was so bad. after todays experience it seems like this is not the case with flyer.
I do change my roms but still there is no reason why Htc would do clumsy software, even if I'm planning to change it then for as you mention better performance a and additional options not because stock one is unbearable.
Thanks once again.

Yeah, I don't think you'll have any issues with the snappiness and response of the Flyer in the long term either. The thing just "flies" no matter what I throw at it, whether on GB or HC.

***** suppose to mean post, damn auto correction
This device is absolutely awesome. Upgraded to Hc few minutes ago but so far on GB it was best stock ROM I experienced so far with HTC devices (wildfire had too slow -rooted sensation - terrible, rooted, desire HD and s were ok but rooted them anyway with flyer I don't feel tempted to root it because it works so well), everything works ok no issues whatsoever. Awesome device for that money.

I don't want to create a new thread so I hope people don't mind I revive this; on amazon the 16GB Wifi Flyer is £189.99 but a Playbook is 169.99. Now obviously I know the limitations of the Playbook, it has only select Android apps ported/available but it has a dual core CPU.
I'm not desperate to get a tablet but these prices do make it quite attractive (usually you'll get cheapo stuff at this range). Has anyone had experience of both tablets?
