I just noticed that my thumbnails folder is increasing exponentially in size and I've not added any new files. I deleted the folder yesterday and now it's again around 500 mb eating internal memory.
I'm on jelly bean official btu Rom. Everything stock except rooted. Any ideas clues?

For some more information that my phone will start manufacturing TONS of files inside a hidden folder called ".thumbnails" whenever I plug it into the charger while powered on. As I type this, there are currently 765MB worth of thumbnail files accumulated from every video file on my phone. And the longer I leave it, the larger it gets. This has happened over the last 3 hours. I can delete them, but it will start all over again unless I either unplug the charger or turn off the phone. It also appears to SIGNIFICANTLY slow down my phone's ability to charge. This is very odd.
Has anybody else experienced this? or check this folder (you can check by settings ->storage-> miscellaneous files -> .thumbnails (folder size)? alternately you can use root explorer to find this folder & see the content of this foder.
any body?????
Not exactly a solution, but more of a hack:
If your phone is rooted AND you have BusyBox AND a shell application (Terminal Emulator), you can make the thumbnails folder readonly:
Open the Terminal Emulator and issue the following commands (one per line, hitting ENTER after each one)
su
rm -fr /sdcard/.thumbnails/*
chmod -R 444 /sdcard/.thumbnails
These 2 commands will not only clean your thumbnails folder but also make it ReadOnly to everyone.
Use at your own risk! Keep in mind that I have no idea what consequences might arise from these, and if doing so will speed up your device. There are chances that the app trying to write to .thumbnails will raise several ANRs in a row. Honestly, I have no idea what can happen.

Thanks for the reply. Yes my phone is rooted. I can delete the thumbnails folder through root explorer. But it keeps coming back. This seems like a major bug in jelly bean. Seems strange that most of the people has not noticed this. There should be some sort of auto garage cleaner by Google for this mess.

Since nobody could help make. And this seems to be the biggest bug present in each jelly bean rom and strangest thing is nobody seems to notice this. Just check for thumbnails folder after charging each day and it will explode in size by creating tens of thumbnails of the same file.
So i tried each and every possible solution. And I think I have found the solution by disabling stock gallery and stock video player. I'm now using quickpic for photos and mxplayer as a video player. Seems like the bug is gone. What the hell.... Samsung should have fixed this bug. ... it eats internal memory like anything. ...

I cannot help but I confirm that I have the same problem. Didn't you try to install a modifiied gallery application at the time the one coming with CM10 was bugged and was missing the connection with picasa/google+ account?
On my side, I keep deleting it regularly at each "Clean Master" cleanup though I know this is not a real solution.

HI
I have check the SDcard Root and I have a lot of DiskCacheIndexxxxx.tmp
Does anyone know what are this files?
Thanks
good question
Good question I have about 50 of them!
Most likely app-created index files to hold the location of cached contents. Did a quick google search and you can find other refs to these files, mainly in other android and even other xda threads (G1 for instance) where in one someone said he went ahead and deleted them with no ill effects. YMMV

I found that already and delete the files..
but it has start creating new ones..
Thank you
believe they are caused by Quandrent Advanced. I only get them when I have that app installed. I just delete it and use Quadrent Standard and the files go away
I had this exact problem. It was caused by installing 3d froyo gallery from the market. After removing this app, rebooting (and deleting all the files in the root), the problem was resolved. Not sure if this applies to you guys, but figured I'd chime in.
Also, they are not caused by quadrant advanced, i've been using that for quite some time, and it never dumped files to the root of the card.)
Sounds pornographic to me
Just kidding. Anyway yeah it's Quadrant.

Instead of using 3D gallery from market you can use standalone *.apk from Nexus it works without creating any temp files on sdcard root.

Ok, Seeing as how the first 10 pages and search yielded no results, I think I might be one of those special kids mentioned in the terms and agreements video.
I need to know where Astro installs the apks, because obviously it's not under system/app nor data/app. I've browsed both twice while revealing hidden files but they have not yielded any results. I can find every app on the phone but the ones that I've installed through Astro... So if anyone can shed some light as to where I might find them, that would be great.
try here
dont know if its similar but i have same problem with ics not being able to find apps that were unremovable (they just kept reinstalling) but noticed some apps were also in /preload (dont know if this helps your case or not)
Maybe /mnt/sdcard?
Check peferences in astro for home directory?
Other apps also in /data/app

Thanks for the reply but it's not an unremovable app, just a few apks that I nicked off the internet. They show up under settings > applications and can be removed, but I just can not for the life of me find them on the system folders

Yeah, I've checked those, and all the home directories and usb directories and sd external directories, pretty much all of the directories listed in the preference for Astro with no success. Also, somehow, my /data/app folder only has the stock apps, nothing new that I've installed so far. Appreciate the reply though
Use your root file explorer to search your device, it will show up eventually.....
Edit: so no confusion, I mean the search function within the app

If you have your phone set to install apps to external memory, there should be a folder called "android.secure". This is where the phone puts apps that are installed to the SD. (by default) Now I am assuming you have not formatted you SD to include a EXT 2/4 partition, or else you would know to look there. I would investigate to see if you can find an android.secure folder.
Hi guys,
I know there is an issue with the media scanner killing battery, until now I have been disabling the scanner with the rescan media root app.
My Q: Has it been fixed? Or is there a fix where it does not kill battery soo quick?
Thanks in advance

Is pretty easily fixed.
First if you do nandroid backups in the blob format change to .tar and delete any current backups.
If that does not fix it format your sd card.
If still not fixed clear your thumbnail caches.
And as a last resort full wipe and start from scratch.

Thanks for the advise
I can't remember what format my backups were.. It was set to the default one. I have a few on my external SD though so I'll move them to PC.
I also have CoPilot on my internal SD so I'm thinking maybe the map cache is causing a problem? I refuse to delete it though just because Google/Samsung have this annoying bug in their software.
Add .nomedia files in all your backup and cache directories, the scanner should then ignore them.
Try stopping Media Storage, clearing data and rebooting before formatting or wiping, run the scanner once after boot then disable with Rescan Media Root app.
Offered ntsDaa
It's my understanding (See Issue 37199 on codeDOTgoogleDOTcom, comment 45) that
MediaScanner: reimplement the ".nomedia" feature for hiding files from the media provider
Previously we ignored any files and directories that had name started with '.'
and ignored any directories that contained a ".nomedia" file.
Now to support transferring any file via MTP, we now add these previously ignored files
to the media database, but will not mark them as audio, video, image or playlist files.
That way they will be included in the files table but will be hidden from the
audio, video, images and playlist views that are used by apps like Music and Gallery.

To wit, MediaScanner indexes ALL files irrespective of the presence or absence of a .nomedia file in that directory.
From that same issue it appears that it is because filenames with characters that are also SQL wildcards ( "_" and similar) cause the scan to run slower.
From android googlesource change id I1cd4efbd56a37886cb44a86acb73eb9a3c9f303d
Improve scan time for some cases
When the path being matched has a sqlite wildcard character in it, a "like"
match will be quite slow. Unfortunately this is fairly common, since "_"
is a wildcard character. However, because in most cases the case of the path
in the database will match the case on disk, an "=" match will work, so it
is worthwhile to try an "=" match first, before trying a "like".
If there are no wildcard characters, the "like" will be as fast as the "=",
because of the case-insensitive index on the _data column, so there is no
need to try "=" first in that case.

Apparently this is substantially improved in 4.2, but there my knowledge ends; I ran across this while trying to fix an unrelated issue.
EDIT @ 1639UTC: Koushik Dutta said the same thing in his G+ post of 27th December: plusDOTgoogleDOTcom/103583939320326217147/posts/Ntgmq2oniA5
Thanks for the info guys
I disabled media scanning the past few days but none of my stored photos would show in gallery apart from recent ones!
If I can keep my library intact but stop the annoying scanning, then I'll be very happy
I've had it twice for different reasons and it is annoying. Don't bother with freezing and using rescan media as that's just as annoying.
It's easy enough to live with while you're trying to track down the cause. Simply stop media scanner after you boot the phone. In my experience the wakelock will not return until you reboot. Then you can just stop it again. That way everything works

i wanted to backup my progress in jetpack joyride (and other games), but when i look to /data/data/ i don't see com.halfbrick.jetpackjoyride . Other games seems like don't have any save files at all. I have nexus7.
Thanks for guidance.

I'm looking for help with making an app, message me if you are interested in helping!
Try searching in the Android/data folder or use titanium backup and take a backup of your data. Its sometimes more efficient if you don't know in which folder the data is stored.

I also looked in Computer\Nexus 7\Internal storage\Android\data and the folder is not there. It seams to me like permission issue. Also i'm suffering from media server issue and cannot find file that is causing the trouble and i think it might be on the device just not visible to the world, just system or something like that.
Same thing with MLP i have folder Computer\Nexus 7\Internal storage\Android\data\com.gameloft.android.ANMP.GloftPOHM\files with files, but non of these files are save games, but the game on the device saves so again this would lead me to believe that this is security issue.
Savegame files are present in titanium backup output, so again - permissions i would guess. How can i make all of files on storage visible?

I think some Root Explorers might have an option to show hidden folders, not so sure though.
Hi all, thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
I've been going between 2 ROMs recently (Tron 2.1 and PAC-Man 23.0). For both of them, it is showing that the "Media" app is using a larger percentage of my battery (around 18%). I'm just not sure what this app is, or how to disable or remove it.
When I click on the app from the Battery details, "Force Stop" and "Report" are disabled buttons. Down below, it shows the included packages being "Downloads", "Media Storage", "Download Manager", "DRM Protected Content". I haven't been downloading anything, nor adding songs or movies, so I'm not sure what this "app" is spending its cycles doing.
Thanks!
I guess that it would be a better idea to report this incident to the ROM developer..
I have the same problem sometimes. After a google search I found that basically, your phone is searching for all the media on your internal and external storage. What causes the wake lock is that it is searching for or has found a file that is corrupt. It basically gets stuck on that file for awhile.
I had the wake lock for a couple days then it just went away.

That is really interesting! Using a previous ROM, I do have a few corrupted images from a camera-app-gone-haywire. I'll have to clean those out (which I should have done anyway), and see if that helps.
Great idea!
No problem! I should go through and clean my SD card out, but I am too lazy and don't have the time to spend on it. I just deal with it because I usually have a charger nearby most of the time.

Check to make sure the .thumbnails folder in the DCIM folder isnt overloaded with 2GB of images. Dont use the stock camera app regardless what ROM you are on. It accesses the stock Gallery app which in turns eventually creates thousands and thousands of "thumbnail" images. More like small pics at about 400x300 resolution. It JAMS up android.process.media .. hell.. it would make my phone hot because sometimes it ran straight for 24 minutes killing cpu.. deleted all the files in there and stopped using the stock app, no more problem.

So what do we do when we have been using the stock gallery and camera app? Can I delete the .thumbnails folder? What kind of camera and gallery app do you recommend? I have both stock samsung and stock android camera that I use everyday...
I have been using my phone (unrooted stock) for quite some time now and only recently did the media act up on me and killing the battery. I have rooted and install custom rom and reformatted my sdcard.
It'll now i kinda check the battery more frequently.

Just following up (I asked the original question). What I've found is that between various ROMs, I have two images folders on my sdcard. Mostly, I just went through and deleted a few invalid images (I think my Tron 2.0 ROM used to take corrupt images, but no longer). I cleaned out many many images I no longer needed as well.
Also, not sure if this is related: I uninstalled and reinstalled Google+ (which has an image auto-backup feature). I had been restoring it from a backup, and I think it got corrupted along the way. It was no longer automatically backing up images, for example.
Since then, I've been in much better shape, and I haven't noticed the Media process taking as much battery.
