Files Transfer - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've taken pictures with the S3 and it's stored in internal memory, how do I transfer the pictures to my computer without using Samsung Kies?

Connect using usb. You should be able to access both sd cards from my computer.
Card for external, Phone for internal.

ACtually you don't need KIES at all, and in my opinion, you shouldn`t even have it installed.
In order for xcly's suggestion to work (which is the proper method, btw), you need to have the drivers for the phone installed.
There are 2 ways to get that:
1) Uninstall KIES. It will ask you if you want to leave the drivers installed. Do so.
2) If completely uninstallaed KIES & drivers or never installed them, you can install the drivers only package from here:
http://developer.samsung.com/android/tools-sdks/Samsung-Andorid-USB-Driver-for-Windows
With these drivers you'll be able to connect the phone to the computer using the USB cable and use Windows Explorer to copy files to/from the phone easily.
Another much slower choice is to use Bluetooth.

No usb storage mode for GS3 internal memory. Only MTP.

USB Mass Storage, or UMS, was replaced by Media TransferProtocol, or MTP for ICS & above.

thanks for the quick reply, i was referring to files i had copied over to the phone before i flashed the new rom which i cannot see any longer, together with all the folders and stuff. does this mean i have to copy the files i want to keep all into my computer and then manually transfer into the phone again?
Do you have samsung driver or kies installed on your computer?

yep i do, i installed the drivers off the s3 toolkit, thats how i was able to copy content onto the phone in the first place
install kies driver and android sdk driver
that will solve the problem of my files not appearing inside the phone after its connected? my computer can recognise the phone and i can open it up and even tell how much free space there is, but the inside is totally empty, when i flash back to omega the files can be seen again. im just wondering if this is a jellybean peculiarity
Install kies if you haven't already.. If that doesn't work, restart the phone and then try.

Mass storage mode on Windows XP

When I connect my S3 to my Windows XP laptop it connects as a media device, showing only 2 folders - data and media. When I connnect to a Windows 7 desktop I can access both the internal and external SD cards as storage devices - which is what I want to do on the laptop.
Is there any way that I can get full access to my phone's SD card from a Windows XP machine?

I'd suggest trying to install KIES for the drivers and see if that helps
Or search for the SaMSUNG usb DRIVERS .

I had already installed the Samsung USB driver, so that wasn't the issue. I've now installed Kies, but that seems to have made things worse - I now get an error installing the hardware device when I plug the phone in, and the laptop can't see it at all :0(

Really? It is my understanding that stock s3 does not support usb mass storage, only mtp (which is why you see it appear as a media device). You can download easy usb mass storage from the s3 android apps forum to enable mass storage mode (requires root and busybox), but only for the external sd card. As the internal sd card is a single partition mounting it in windows would render the device unusable. Could you elaborate on how you are achieving this in win7,and what you are running on your s3 (firmware, rooted etc)?

There was no special setup on Win7. I'm running Win7 Enterprise and did not manually install either Kies or a Samsung driver - I just plugged the phone in. The phone is rooted, and running CheckROM 3.5. It is listed as a media player, but shows the internal SD card as "Phone" and the external card as "Card". Now if only I could get XP to do something similar.
Will investigate easy usb mass storage....

Thanks for the speedy clarification. If you went into either phone or card could you see non-media files (e.g zip files)? I think you may be running in mtp mode on both machines, and I think you can only see media files in mtp mode. However I am definitely no expert or developer.

Yes I'm running MTP mode. The only other option is Camera (PTP). On the Win7 machine I can see all files and directories - it behaves just like a mass storage device.
MTP mode
Connected via Samsung USB cable to Win 7 PC.+ drivers installed
Open My Computer
Open GT-i9300
Two drives Phone and SD card exactly the same as in USB mass storage mode .
Cut Paste Copy Delete all the normal functions on all the user folders .

Yeah I just plugged my phone in to test and can see non-media files in mtp mode. I'm sure it has drawbacks but I'm afraid I can't remember them lol. I know the positive points for mtp is the phone can still access the card, and media files will be formatted to the optimum file type when you transfer them (for example movies will be re encoded to native resolution).
I'm afraid I've reached the limit of my knowledge in this area and don't think I can be of any more assistance. The best I can advise is use easy usb to access the external sd card on your xp machine, and research the limitations of mtp mode, and how xp handles mtp.
Edit: after some brief research it seems you need windows media player 10 or higher for mtp to work on xp, although I seriously doubt you have an older version. Also as you are rooted you could install Solid Explorer Beta from the play store (free) and browse the file system via wifi by pressing menu key and selecting file sharing from within the app.
I'm now officially out of ideas

Do you have the latest service pack installed on XP (sp3), as well as as latest windows media player? The XP MTP support comew with one of those, i don't remember which one, though. Wouldn't hurt to have both anyway.
PS: Those recommending Kies should think again! It has NOTHING to do with it and its a piece of cr^H^H^H bloatware.

[Q] Big problem, would appreciate some help.

I have the following problems:
1. I can`t copy files to both the internal and external sdcard through usb
I tried to uninstall Kies and all the drivers, rebooted and reconnected the phone and windows says usb drivers not installed: missing cdc serial number. Than i installed Samsung mobile USB driver 1.5.5.0 and still cannot transfer files to and from the phone.
2. If i transfer files with Airdroid i cannot flash tem, it says E: not accessible ( i formated the external sdcard twice both on the phone and on the pc). Flashing from the internal sdcard is also not possible.
I have no clue what happened and i hope someone can provide a usefull tip. I`am on stock rom right now ,not rooted and did a factory reset and still no transfer possible. Get the message: Device stopped answering or the connection is broken. Tried several usb ports, using a samsung usb cable.
-Edit- SOLVED

[q] mtp not detecting

There is a strange problem since I bought my gs3.. It never recognized MTP. whenever i connect phone to pc via the usb provided with the box, it only displays charging but not any usb detection, even my pc won't connect any device, as if nothing is connected. My pc recognize it in download mode. But as soon as the rom boots up the usb connection no longer exist and hence no selection menu in notification bar comes. Currently running paranoid android 3.10
I want to transfer big files to my sd card but can't and every time i have to eject sd card connect to another phone and then transfer files.
Please help.
Use airdroid, No need for a usb connection

I717 windows explorer doesnt see

when I plug in my I717 via USB in my desktop, windows sees it as Samsung Android device, but when I go into windows explorer, there's nothing to see (the usb or sd storage isnt listed at all) and I do have mtp usb storage activated on the phone and usb debug. I am running gingerbread touchwiz rom. I can see the phone and transfer files wirelessly with ES file explorer, but I cant access the sd card or the phones internal storage through usb windows explorer connection even though device management shows Samsung android device. Windows Device manager shows the phone with no yellow flags. anyone had this happen and found solution to share? thanks
You can try rebooting the computer, using different usb ports, using a different cable. I don't know if this works on gingerbread but I have used it on jellybean roms before when I've had trouble connecting... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=in.zatta.USB_switch
Just thought of one other thing. You didn't say anything about Windows loading the device drivers so I gotta ask if you have installed the Samsung drivers?

yep..have samsung drivers. also, about the app you linked above, I'd like to try it out but google play says its not compatible with my device (probably because I'm still on gingerbread). anywhere else I can download the apk and try manual install?
I think your problem is that you are connecting via MTP (media transfer protocol). You need to connect via USB mass storage. With your Note not connected to your PC, go into Settings, under Wireless and network look for USB utilities. Follow the phone's instructions for connecting to USB storage to your PC. Wait for the Windows autostart to read the phone storage. (My PC is XP and takes a minute or so.) Then you should see two new drives show on Windows Explorer. One is phone internal storage and the other is the phone's external SD card. Hope this works for you. Good luck!
I believe sonebwood is on the right track on this. I remember when the Note first came out I had to change something to get windows to see the drives. Is there any particular reason you keep the phone on gingerbread? ICS was a lot better and you can update to JB through Kies.
